While sheltering in place at home in Surrey, British Columbia during the coronavirus clampdown, Rabiah Dhaliwal mastered winged liner. “I’ve become an eyeliner god,” laughs the 21-year-old.
Drawing the perfect cat-eye flick is the latest addition to Dhaliwal’s self-care menu, a range of go-to activities put in place to improve her well-being. “Even if I’m just going downstairs to make food then going off to study, [makeup] can feel empowering,” expresses Dhaliwal, who is currently studying science at the University of British Columbia and aiming for med school. And as someone who has struggled with her mental health for several years, self-care has become crucial, especially during an unsettling pandemic.
Other restorative ingredients in her wellness recipe include quick-start items – like simply getting out of bed and setting a daily routine, journaling and creative drawing – to big ticket tasks such as therapy. “Sometimes I need to go [to therapy] more, sometimes I need to go less…It just depends on what I’m going through at the time, and that’s completely okay.”
As for her trusty liquid eyeliner, interesting fact: It was part of a swag bag she received at the Canadian edition of the L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth gala pre-shutdown in March—along with a $10,000 award. Each year, the beauty giant seeks out Canadian women that demonstrate advocacy and change within their communities, and Dhaliwal, along with nine other women, was honoured with a charitable grant.
Dhaliwal was recognized for her work as volunteer vice president with the One Blood for Life Foundation, a non-profit organization which aims to increase the ethnic diversity of the national stem cell registry so patients who require a stem cell transplant have a higher chance of finding a successful donor. “You have a higher chance of finding a match within your own ethnic community. For a lot of racialized communities within Canada, those donor numbers are lower,” explains Dhaliwal, who started up with the organization whilst in grade 12. It was extremely meaningful work for her as, that same year, her beloved grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and required numerous blood transfusions.
During the gala, Dhaliwal was also celebrated for becoming a committed mental health advocate after living through personal agony.
In grade 11, Dhaliwal struggled deeply with her mental health and her deteriorating mental state led to an attempted suicide that left Dhaliwal in a coma and recovering in an adolescent psychiatric ward. “I was feeling suicidal because I didn’t have healthy coping strategies. Time in the hospital and going to counselling and therapy really helped equip me with those tools,” she says, acknowledging that her mental health is a continued healing journey. “A big personal goal is to get to a point where I’m confident enough to say that I’ve been able to move past what I’ve been through.” One thing that has helped tremendously: Not dwelling on her health issues and, instead, speaking out and sharing her story.
The L’Oréal Paris grant inspired Dhaliwal to put the money towards starting her very own mental health organization, a passion project that has been brewing in her mind for some time. “Winning was the affirmation that I needed that my mental health story was being heard and my work was being recognized. After that, I garnered up the courage to start,” she says.
Called the Voices for Hope Foundation, the organization, which is in its planning phase, aims to dispel harmful misconceptions surrounding mental health and illness, and bring light to these “invisible” health issues. “We do that by spearheading educational workshops and campaigns, writing social justice think pieces and through policy and advocacy work,” states Dhaliwal.
And at the heart of the organization she is building is a platform to amplify BIPOC voices. “We want to give [people of colour] a safe space to share their experiences and equip them with tools for healthy healing” she says. This is particularly important because culturally sensitive representation and resources truly matter in the mental health space, something Dhaliwal wishes she saw when struggling with suicidal thoughts.
“I often felt a lack of validation and visibility due to there being an absence of culturally-informed therapy as well as a lack of BIPOC mental health professionals. I can also remember being 16 and being admitted to the adolescent psychiatric ward where I was the only brown person there and one of the few BIPOC patients in general. This led to a feeling of isolation and cultural disconnect,” explains Dhaliwal. “When speaking to a therapist, I often found myself expending more emotional labour trying to explain the complex dynamic of my culture in relation to my mental health struggles, and often did not find their advice applicable. Simple advice such as ‘communicating with your parents’ was hard for me to believe in.”
As the second-generation daughter of hard-working Punjabi-Sikh immigrants who escaped religious genocide in India, Dhaliwal grew up in a culture with a survivalist mentality of “keeping your head down and powering through your problems”, she shares. Opening up about her poor emotional health to her family just didn’t feel like an option. “There is a word in Punjabi called ‘izzat’, which means honour. Staying silent is seen as honourable because of the survival mentality that has manifested in our community. Talking about your problems is self-indulgence.”
It’s complex stigmas like these that inspire Dhaliwal to speak out today, especially so that young racialized women like her “can see that there is someone who looks like them who went through this and came out the other side stronger.”

Yesterday, model Emily Ratajkowski announced she is expecting her first child via a special digital edition Vogue cover and hours later, the mom-to-be was already putting her stellar pregnancy style on display.
Stepping out in New York mere hours after the news broke, Ratajkowski looked thrilled to show off her changing figure (she’s currently 20 weeks along). The model wore the black bodycon “Gigi” midi dress by Aya Muse with cut-out panels at the side which highlighted her growing bump, paired with dark sunglasses, red knee-high boots, chunky gold bracelets and a sizeable black clutch.
To coincide with the announcement, Ratajkowski shared a powerful essay on pregnancy and motherhood with the website. In the piece, she touched on gender stereotypes (“I like the idea of forcing as few gender stereotypes on my child as possible,” she wrote), the pressure of pregnancy reveals, her fears of raising a son (though she doesn’t yet know the gender of her child) in this world and the myriad opinions that you’re bombarded with when carrying a child. She is, however, looking forward to what is to come. “I’m too humbled to have any false notions of control. I’m completely and undeniably helpless when it comes to almost everything surrounding my pregnancy: how my body will change, who my child will be. But I’m surprisingly unbothered. Instead of feeling afraid, I feel a new sense of peace. I’m already learning from this person inside my body. I’m full of wonder.”
We suspect the above is just the start of an epic maternity wardrobe. Stay tuned for more looks.

Earlier today it was announced that Quebec-based brand Noemiah, helmed by creative Noemie Vaillancourt, won top prize in the Global Clothing category at the 2020 Etsy Design Awards. The accolade – which was decided in part by celebrity judge Drew Barrymore along with Etsy’s trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson – was bestowed to Noemiah for its eco-conscious balloon sleeved printed dress which is crafted in fine, Azo free silk organza and made in a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified facility.
“It is such good news for me,” Vaillancourt told FASHION after learning about her win. “I feel privileged to have grown an amazing clientele throughout Etsy over the last decade! This human connection is central to my purpose, and I don’t think I would have evolved the same way without it. It is a challenge to control [my brand’s] growth, and I cultivate the freedom that I have to take the time to think and to push my artistic approach. And I feel privileged if this award puts Canadian design on the global playing field.”
Noemiah wasn’t the only Canadian fashion brand to get a nod from the awards; Moncton accessory label DodoLeather and Toronto jewellery brand Omi Woods were also among the group of 100 finalists vying for category prizes and the $15,000 USD grand prize, which went to Calgary-based decor line AdrianMartinus for its credenza made from upcycled skateboards.
This news, in addition to Ottawa native Olivia Rubens winning the Responsible Fashion award at the recent International Talent Support competition, highlights the abundance of thoughtful design talent thriving across the country.
When you’re pregnant, deciding what to wear that is both comfy and stylish may not be the main priority on your mind. However, finding outfits that will fit you from one day to the next will help tick one more box off your every day to-do list.
It’s often assumed that pregnancy clothes both during and after you have given birth can’t be both a comfortable fitting and a fashion staple, but this isn’t true! Nowadays, there are a variety of clothing tastes and trends circulating the internet for those that have a baby on the way – you just need to know where to look.
With this said, our recent Google search data finds that many pregnant women are constantly looking for trendy outfits to wear while pregnant and what to wear after the baby’s arrival too. With this in mind, we analyse the most commonly searched questions on google regarding pregnancy and what to wear both during and after.
Clothing for pregnancy
Deciding what outfit is going to fit comfortably and look fashionable for your day to day activities can sometimes be a struggle. In relation to this, recent Google trends data finds that this phrase has been researched on average 3,429 times per month since the beginning of 2020 in the UK – proving to be a topic a lot of people need some extra advice on.
As for specific types of clothing that are researched, ‘pregnant women dresses’ is the third most common phrase that is searched for on Google in relation to this topic, equating to 886 searches per month since the start of the year. For those that are in need of some dress inspiration, a long floral print maternity jersey style dress sported with a pair of flat black boots is great to going for a bite to eat. For a more casual look, a maternity pinafore dress with a T-shirt underneath and a pair of trainers make for both a cute and comfy look.
Other than dresses, ‘pregnant women’s dresses’ is another general term that accounted for 653 searches per month as of the start of 2020. When you’re in need of a quick and easy look, mom-style jeans and an oversized button shirt is the ultimate go-to. If this isn’t quite your style, buying basics such as leggings or joggers and styling them with a slouchy knit jumper and sandals is a great alternative.
Maternity fashions
Deciding what you’re going to wear both before and after the baby arrives is another thought that appears to be on a lot of people’s minds, with the phrase ‘maternity fashions’ being searched on Google 886 times per month as of the start of the year. Not only that, but ‘when to buy maternity clothes’ is another popular search term on Google, accounting for 323 searches per month since the start of 2020.
While on maternity leave, you’ll need some comfy clothing items and pyjamas to lounge around in and for making those trips out the house. Although these aren’t formal occasions to dress for, feeling good and confident in what you’re wearing even in your own home is important. With this said, investing in a co-ordinated loungewear set with wide-leg trousers, or a stretchy wrap top paired with tie-front leggings, or a pair of 90s style joggers for a retro-spin, are all comfy and stylish alternatives to the plain-old basics you have in your wardrobe.
After birth clothes
Other than maternity clothes, figuring out what’s best to wear initially after giving birth can be difficult to determine, and finding a balance between comfort and style may seem almost impossible.
But not to worry! There are plenty of outfit choices for everyone after giving birth. If you’ve been meaning to jump on the trend of oversized, baggy clothing, then now is the time to start. Purchasing oversized tees that pop with colours and patterns will be both comfy and fun. When the colder months approach, knitted cardigans paired with stretchy leggings and comfortable, loose-fitting flat shoes or trainers are common preferences.
Don’t forget pyjamas too. As the winter months approach, treat yourself to a new nursing dress, made with soft cotton material. Or a pyjama set with your favourite type of pattern or print on – pyjamas don’t just have to be an old tee and a pair of sports shorts!
Nowadays, there is a huge range of pregnancy clothes available that are both comfy and stylish. Although fashion might not be your biggest interest right now, treating yourself to a new outfit or two every now and then will help revamp your maternity wardrobe!

Browning butter is quite simple but you do have to be careful you don’t burn it. Make it on the stovetop and wait for the nutty aroma to fill your home.

Stir: Continue to stir as it melts and watch as it turns to an amber color and smells nutty. Then it’s done.
Remove: To keep it from continuing to cook, quickly remove from heat and pour into a heat-proof bowl. Make sure to scrape all the dark brown bits from the bottom. Those are the flavor makers.

In an effort to make 2020 suck just a little less, Chris Hemsworth has released a series of cheeky affirmations that "absolutely, positively, probably (most likely) not make 2020 any worse."
In a series on Instagram videos, he shares five hilarious affirmations to live by - 'Breathe. Or don't', 'Inhale possibility, not bugs', 'Become one with the chaos', 'Balancing it all' and 'Rolling with it'.
Throughout each video, Chris's baritone voice narrates a seemingly peaceful meditation based on each positive affirmation before something undoubtedly goes wrong. Which is a big 2020 mood tbh.
Our personal favourite: Inhale Possibility, Not Bugs
The meditation starts off with Chris perched among a sea of pink flowers. "Since no one is going anywhere, no where fun at least, here's a quick meditation to help you find peace in your present situation," he starts off.
"Find a comfortable place to sit: your yard, a park, some strange pink flowers, and now focus. Inhale the fresh scent of possibility and exhale all that pent up quarantine energy. *coughs* Just embrace your surroundings, feel the air gently caress your skin," he says as he slaps a bug. "What the hell was that?"
He continues: "Soak up the very, very bright sun. and just rela . . . Was that a Murder Hornets? That was definitely a Murder Hornet That's just a figure of speech right? They Don't actually murder you? Oh my god, let's try this some other time, some other place," he says fleeing his meditation spot among the flowers.
These relatable affirmations were created to support Hemsworth's fitness app, Centr. Centr members will also be treated to five exclusive bonus affirmations touching on topical themes like manifesting a good mail day, and the struggle to 'move on and out of your PJs', available exclusively over the coming weeks.
However, if you prefer to take a more traditional approach to meditation, the app also has over 200 unique meditations and sleep visualisations to help reclaim your zen.
You can check out the first five hilarious videos below.
The - now very public feud - between Candice Warner and Roxy Jacenko reportedly started after the two women had a falling out on the set of SAS Australia when they were challenged by the show's instructors to take each other on in a boxing fight.
Speaking to Kyle and Jackie O on KIIS FM last week, Roxy said she was "upset" to be paired with Warner for the boxing match on the reality TV series, because well, they were friends and who wants to throw down with their friend?! After claiming that she refused to throw a punch at Warner during the challenge, Roxy explained that ruining a friendship for entertainment wasn't worth it in her opinion.
"Is she really my friend anymore? No. You know why I never hit back? Because it'd be like being in a ring with Jackie. You're my mate, and I'm not going to smack you in the face for other people's entertainment," she told the hosts.
"You wouldn't continue punching when the person - me - turns their back and continue punching them in the back of the head. In boxing, that's totally not allowed. The reality is, I can't punch my then-friend in the face for people's entertainment."
Roxy went on to reveal that she cried after the fight and Warner had not reached out to apologise or repair the friendship since their time on the series.
"You look back and go, 'F**k, I should have whacked her one,' but you know what? I'm bigger than that and I've got respect for other people." said Jacenko. "No, she sacked me instead. People will always let you down. I believe after what I did for Candice that it was a real smack in the face, pardon the pun," she continued.
Now, it's seemingly intensified as Candice Warner explained to Nova's Fitzy and Wippa that she was "shocked" when the PR queen blasted her on the radio last week.
Dismissing Roxy's claim that she didn't fight back because of the pair's prior friendship, and that "there was an opportunity before the fight to pull out, [but] we both chose to glove up, put the helmet on." Adding "She tried to [fight] but she couldn't land a punch. That's the honest truth. Ask anyone."
Candice went on to explain that she did, in fact, apologise to Jacenko after the bout, however, the scene never went to air. Adding that once the episode aired, she didn't expect Roxy to attack her as publicly as she did. "I was shocked by her comments and I'm really sorry that she feels that way."
She went on to explain that she also still remains under contract with Roxy until next month, and as for whether or not they're on speaking terms? "Apparently not," she told Fitzy and Wippa.
Here's hoping these two ladies can sort it out because no reality TV series is worth losing a friendship over.
Instagram is set to change its policy on images of people holding naked breasts after being called out for censoring photos of UK curve model Nyome Nicholas-Williams and Aussie comedian Celeste Barber. From Wednesday, the social media platform will allow photos of people hugging, holding or cupping breasts, the ABC writes.
In the UK, Nyome, photographer Alex Cameron and campaigner Gina Martin have been advocating for months for the policy to be reviewed, as body-positive images, often of Black, plus-sized men and women, were being censored or removed.
Earlier in October, Instagram censored a post from Celeste Barber imitating a naked photograph of model Candice Swanepoel. The post couldn't be shared because it was said to breach "community guidelines on nudity or sexual activity".
Commentators pointed out the double standard between Instagram's censorship of Celeste's post, in which she is wearing underwear, and the lack of censorship applied to Candice's fully naked original. Others went on to speculate that the difference lies in the difference in body types between Celeste and Candice - that Candice meets cultural beauty standards around thinness, while Celeste is a curvier woman.
"Hey Instagram, sort out your body-shaming standards, guys," Celeste wrote about the censorship. "It's 2020. Catch up." In a followup post, Celeste copied a pose from Bella Hadid, writing, "Oh hi, just out here checking on your double standards."
Instagram's head of public policy in Australia Philip Chua said the censorship "shouldn't have happened", and that Instagram had apologised to Celeste. "This shouldn't be happening and we are committed to addressing any inequity on our platforms," he said. "We expect to update our breast covering policies very soon, to make sure all body types are treated fairly."
He stressed that other images of naked breasts, where nipples are not visible, were accepted on the platform, including those "depicting acts of protest, women actively engaged in breastfeeding and photos of post-mastectomy scarring".
Yesterday, Nyome celebrated the change, writing on Instagram that breast-holding is a "celebration of body", while breast-grabbing is determined to be pornographic and is censored to protect underage users.
"This policy change should allow them to better differentiate self expression/ art from pornographic content. Hopefully this policy change will bring an end to the censorship of fat black bodies," she said.
It's definitely an important first step - and one worth celebrating, just like the images of diverse bodies available on the platform. Scroll on to see some of Nyome and Celeste's images:

Early this year, Aussie darling Rebel Wilson declared 2020 her "Year of Health" and began sharing her fitness journey with her 9.1 million Instagram followers.
"Thanks for all the love so far on my "Year of Health" journey," her post began. "When I was reaching for the candies last night after dinner I thought to myself "hmmmm . . . better not" and had a bottle of water instead x 8kg's to go until I hit my goal - hopefully I can do it by the end of the year."
Since starting out, she has lost around 20kgs and is said to be feeling better than ever. Her famous Aussie PT, Jono Castano spoke to US Today and revealed five fitness and weight loss tips that have helped Rebel along the way.
Jono revealed that he actually encourages her to post her progress on Instagram as a way of holding herself accountable.
"Keep yourself accountable, free posting on social," he told the program. "Rebel has been posting for the whole 2020 about her journey, the ups and downs."
Jono suggests using the power of social media as a motivational tool when your willpower starts to fizzle. "Also, join a community group, where members post their meals, their workouts, the creative steps they are taking. And I think that's definitely a massive boost if you're trying to get fit," he said.
#2. Incidental Exercise Counts As Exercise, Too.
Jono stresses that you don't need to sweat it out for hours a day in the gym, just follow the #45 Daily rule, which involves moving for 45 minutes every single day. If you can't get to the gym, switch up your thinking and figure out alternative ways to get in a bit of a sweat (read: incidental exercise).
"Don't just jump in your car, like even if it's Uber or whatever it is, think of different ways to get to your destination. Maybe it's a walk. I think that's a great thing as well because I'm a big believer that #45 Daily, so include 45 minutes into your day where you are moving," he said.
He also shared a 7-day fitness schedule similar to the one her recommended for Rebel, which includes:
There are a wealth of free fitness apps out there and Jono recommends there could be a few like 'My Fitness Pal' worth downloading to help you on your fitness journey.
"You can set your goal [on My Fitness Pal] and then it'll basically give you a breakdown in terms of how much calories you need to intake per day," said Jono.
"And then you type in your food, what you're currently eating, it creates that accountability, and it gives you the understanding of food calories. It also gives you a water breakdown as well, because a lot of us tend to not intake enough water."
#4. At-Home Workouts Are Bigger Than Ever
Since the pandemic began back in March, at-home workouts have become far more accessible and a realistic way to reach your goals, all you need it a few pieces of equipment explains Jono.
"For example, a set of dumbbells or a kettlebell or two. With those, you could do so many different movements and do so many different workouts with, so you're not only investing in your own gym, you're investing in yourself as well."
#5. Portion Control Is Important
Finally, Jono suggests opting for six smaller meals a day as opposed to three larger ones as it'll keep you satisfied for longer and minimise the urge to snack.
"When we tend to eat, we eat to be full. But what we should be doing is to eat regular meals throughout the day to remain satisfied. So you don't have to starve yourself, but you don't have to make yourself full as well, so eat to be satisfied instead," Said Jono.
