I live by this method because there is too much stuff out there. Even when it comes to simple daily tasks like brushing my teeth, I'm left sifting through endless brush options on the market. Between all the electric and manual choices, how else am I supposed to know what's worth my money?

I mention toothbrushes because they're currently occupying my Amazon cart. And in the spirit of customer reviews, I'll let you in on the five bestselling brushes I'm loving. As for the one that ends up on my sink - I'm leaving that up to my dentist. She always knows what's best for me.

How to Care For Your Teeth If You've Had to Reschedule Your Cleaning


This spring, my routine dental cleaning was cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. It was a necessary and recommended appointment change, but it did leave me wondering if I should be caring for my teeth any differently in order to prevent cavities before my rescheduled appointment.

After all, I've also had to push appointments in the past due to calendar conflicts, and I actually ended up with some sensitivity and a cavity by the time I got into the dentist's chair. It wasn't great.

According to Sophya Morghem, DMD, MS, a general dentist at Sunset Dentistry in San Francisco, a few changes should be made in order to keep your gums and teeth healthy before meeting with your dentist.

First, if you're hesitant to go to the dentist due to health and safety concerns, Dr. Morghem recommends patients ask all the questions needed in order to feel safe coming into the office. You'll also want to follow any personalized advice and health protocols recommended by your doctor and/or dentist.

However, if you do need to reschedule (or have already rescheduled), you might need to amp up your brushing and flossing routines. For example, Dr. Morghem recommends brushing after each meal.

Flossing is nonnegotiable, too. "The best time to floss is before bed, or after the last meal of the day," Dr. Morghem told POPSUGAR. And you'll want to pay attention to the type of floss you're using, too.

"You'll want to use a thick woven floss that will act like a loofa, cleaning the sides of the teeth as you go," Dr. Morghem said. "If you are prone to getting food stuck between your teeth after meals, you should consider flossing after meals as well."

This might be the time to reevaluate what type of toothbrush you're using as well. Dr. Morghem recommends a small electric toothbrush with a small toothbrush head. "This will make your tooth brushing at home more efficient and clean off more plaque. It also helps to compensate for poor brushing habits."

A water flosser isn't an essential, but Dr. Morghem said that if you have dental restorations, you might want to consider investing in the tool. However, she made it clear that using a water flosser doesn't take the place of traditional floss.

"While the water flosser can help eliminate large debris, the traditional floss is still the gold standard for removing plaque that is attached to the tooth surface."

For mouthwash, Dr. Morghem recommends an alcohol-free version so it won't disrupt oral flora. "Remember there are good and bad bacteria in your mouth - you want to maintain a healthy balance."

It might also be a good idea to just be mindful of foods that typically cause dental problems. I don't know about you, but I'm forever terrified of cracking a tooth on a popcorn kernel.

"The most common foods that cause dental problems are sticky chocolates, candies, and popcorn," Dr. Morghem said. "Popcorn hulls have a tendency to get lodged between teeth and creep under the gums - this can lead to a painful gum infection."

Sticky candies also have the potential to pop off crowns or break dental restorations, so be mindful when snacking on them!

Be aware of the signs of cavities, too. "While oftentimes small cavities are pain-free, larger cavities will give you common symptoms to look out for," Dr. Morghem said. "Pain on chewing, sensitivity when eating sweet foods, and tooth discoloration may all be signs that you may have a cavity."

And if you're experiencing heat sensitivity, say when you're taking a sip of coffee, call up your dentist as soon as possible.

Finally, Dr. Morghem said there's no rule for how long it's acceptable to delay a cleaning, though some people are more prone to gum disease and cavities. For those who do have gum-disease concerns, Dr. Morghem does not recommend postponing your dental cleaning for more than four months.

"This is because the changes to your gum health can become irreversible," she said. "For others, I would strongly encourage you to not extend your dental cleanings for more than six months."

Your dentist can also give you personalized guidance on when appointments should be made or rescheduled in a timely manner.

5 Simple Ways To Boost Your Mood

We all need a mood boost now and again. Whether we have received some bad news, endured stress at home or at work, or are struggling to adapt to a situation out of our control, our mood can take a hit.

What many people do not realise is that mood is not purely psychological, it can also have an impact on physical wellbeing. Studies have shown that high levels of stress and low mood can have a negative impact on sleep, health conditions, and even immunity.

While some occasional dips in mood are inevitable, it is helpful to try to get back on track.

For severe or sustained low mood, please seek the advice and care of a medical professional. But for occasional mild low mood, feeling run down or negative, why not try the tips below to feel better and instantly boost your mood?

1) Hit ‘Pause’

If you are run down or exhausted, you are more likely to experience low mood. You can help to fight this by hitting ‘pause’ on your activities and resting effectively. Take a day, an afternoon, or even just an hour to yourself and try to rest both physically and mentally.

This can mean doing something you enjoy, or doing nothing at all. Try to limit anything stressful or overly stimulating — from social media, to work emails or caffeine, everyone is different.

Recent studies have shown that many people’s sleep is declining in quality. The influence of social media, blue light from screens, erratic working hours and more can all have an impact.

Try to separate your work and home life where possible, consider setting limits for your screen time, and prioritise resting effectively. It may sound counterintuitive, but your productivity — and your mood — will greatly improve if you find the right way to rest!

2) Refresh Your Space

A cluttered, dirty, or untidy space can have an impact on feelings of negativity and overwhelm. Ensure that your space is clean and tidy where possible, and try to surround yourself with useful or attractive items that boost your mood.

These might be ornaments, games, books, photographs of family, or even just your favourite coffee mug.

If you are short on time or in need of a deep clean, you may wish to consider hiring a professional to clean your home and refresh your space. This can be especially helpful, as your home environment may be filled with all kinds of nasty germs which won’t be doing your health any good.

3) Learn a New Skill

Trying something new or perfecting a skill can be a great way to boost your mood. This is because it not only stimulates the brain and may lead to a release of ‘happy hormones’ such as serotonin, but it can also boost self-esteem.

When we feel capable, stimulated, and confident — such as when learning a new skill — our mood is naturally better as a result.

Learning a new skill could be as simple as enjoying a hobby online such as painting or photography, or as elaborate as completing a professional training course.

New skills are fun, sociable, and productive — and may even boost your career!

4) Nourish and Hydrate

It may sound simple, but ensuring that we have adequate food and hydration can be key in managing mood. Mood can be affected by changes in blood sugar, hunger, and dehydration — leading to feelings of tiredness, irritability, and even confusion.

Ensuring that you are eating regularly — especially nutrient-dense foods such as fruit, vegetables, and wholegrains — can help to stabilise your mood and energy levels while boosting your immune system.

Also ensure that you are drinking water or herbal teas to hydrate as opposed to sugary or highly caffeinated drinks such as sodas and coffee. These can be diuretics, only serving to dehydrate us further.

With healthy foods and regular hydration, we can boost our mood by feeling alert and satiated throughout our busy day.

5) Connect

They say that a problem shared is a problem halved. There is perhaps no greater mood booster than connecting with a friend or family member, and this can be achieved in a variety of ways.

If you are unable to see them in person, consider arranging a phone call or video call to look forward to. Send a fun postcard, gift, or even just a quick text to let them know you are thinking about them.

Connecting with others and being honest about our feelings is one of the most effective and meaningful ways to boost mood and overall wellbeing.

Why You Should Be Focusing On How You Use Calories Rather Than Burning Them, According to a Trainer

Everywhere you look in the fitness realm we are bombarded with messages around how to "torch fat" and "burn calories", but are these things really that important?

If you think about it - merely existing 'burns' calories. In fact, a big proportion of the calories you eat goes into simply keeping your body alive and regulating your body's many systems. This process is called your basal metabolic rate or BMR.

The next big contributor to your daily energy expenditure is your NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) and incidental exercise.
Your NEAT accounts for all the subconscious movement your body does throughout the day - toe-tapping, fidgeting, talking and laughing.

Incidental exercise has to be one of my favourites though - as this is a way to simply burn calories whilst enjoying and living your life. Examples include; playing with your kids, shopping, walking to work, jumping over the waves at the beach, running to pat a cute dog . . .

You see, your workout is simply the cherry on top - but that doesn't mean it isn't important.

A good workout program keeps your body fit and strong so that you can get more out of life and keep on doing the things you love. Your daily workout has so much more potential than to simply burn calories. It offers many benefits . . . some examples include:

  • Encouraging your body to get comfortable in and out of different positions.
  • Teaching your body how to cope under controlled load.
  • Increased energy and vitality.
  • Improving muscle and bone mass.
  • Assists in improving important health markers such as heart and lung capacity.

So, if you find yourself in a rut, mindlessly going through the motions of every workout, it might be time to rethink your approach to training.

A way to do this is to write a list of all the things you want to get out of your workouts and create fitness goals specific to these ideas. Then, build your program from there.

Here are some ideas:

1. Benefit: Improve my cardiovascular fitness. Training Goal: Run my first 5kms without stopping. Program: Couch to 5k training program

2. Benefit: Keep my bones strong and healthy. Training Goal: Complete 2-3 resistance sessions a week. Program: A periodised strength program.

I know it may seem like semantics, but changing the way we view our time in the gym can have a real impact on motivation and consistency when it comes to training. If we want to be in it for the long haul it's important to look past our workout from purely an aesthetic standpoint and find their true value. There is definitely power in the wording . . . Something to lose or something to gain.

The secret ingredient I’ve been using for my smoothies!

Lately as the weather has been heating up, I’ve been obsessed with making smoothies for breakfast – and they’ve been tasting better than ever!

What’s my secret?

One of the key elements to a good smoothie is a top quality blender! So many of you ask me about which blender I use, so today I’m sharing all the details!

The blender I’m loving right now is KitchenAid’s new K400 blender! It’s the most powerful blender I’ve ever used – it can handle tough ingredients like my go-to nuts and dates which I love mixing into my smoothies for a hit of sweetness and healthy fats! The K400 has the power and ability to smoothly blend any ingredients you want from nuts, seeds, dried or frozen fruit  This makes it perfect for a variety of recipes, from smoothies to muffins, or even soups! I feel safe adding ingredients into the blender that I normally wouldn’t use, and I highly recommend investing in this blender!

Not to mention, the dried rose colour I chose looks so stunning in my kitchen – I’m all about the aesthetic of my kitchen appliances! There are eight gorgeous shades to choose from, so there’s an option for everyone!

So now, I want to share my go-to quick, easy breakfast smoothie with you that I’ve been making on repeat with my KitchenAid K400 – the JSHealth Power Protein Smoothie!

This smoothie is high in protein, fibre and good fats to support good energy, weight balance and reduce sugar cravings. It will keep you full and satiated through the morning!

JSHealth Power Protein Smoothie

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 serve JSHealth Protein + Probiotics
  • 1 tbsp almond butter, or peanut butter
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds, or psyllium husk
  • ½ frozen banana
  • ½ cup (80g) frozen blueberries
  • ½ cup (125ml) almond milk, or milk of choice
  • ½ cup ice cubes
  • ½ cup (125ml) water

To serve (optional):

  • 1 tsp desiccated coconut
  • 1 tbsp mixed nuts, optional

Method:

  1. Place all of the ingredients into your and blitz until combined.
  2. Pour the smoothie into a glass or bowl and top with desiccated coconut, sliced banana, homemade granola for the crunch factor.

I just love how smooth and silky the texture of this smoothie turns out with the K400 blender. The results are consistent, perfect and delicious every time!

Hello again

I am so sorry it has been forever since I have posted. Please forgive me. It has been a long many months for me and you.

Back in March the nursing facility where I work, we had the first case of covid-19 mania in my area. Not only did we have to lock down everything but we lost about 50 patients and then we had like 70 that were infected. We were on the news every night with it so of course we had all that that goes along with being new to something that nobody knows anything about.

A lot of people scared. Including me.

When we found out about our building having covid-19 we had 39 people quit on the spot that first day including 3 receptionists!

Two of the people in the front office with me contracted it and so it turned out to be me and another person doing the front office, the receptionist and the screening because we had to lock the doors. I did a lot of overtime. In the middle of March is when we found out about this.

So I was working 12-hour days 7 days a week. In the middle of April my right knee just gave out it couldn’t deal with the getting up into getting down to answer the door every day all day long. So in my two years of working there, I took a half a day off to go get a shot directly into my knees and it felt wonderfully well. But since then my knees have gave me trouble they’ve been very stiff.

Well some good news, I’m still sober. I am now two years in a couple of days over with being clean and sober which makes me very very happy. And it makes my husband very very happy.

Since all the stuff with covid-19. So it’s just been my husband myself and my dog. I miss seeing my friends who play in the band we used to go see them each and every weekend but I haven’t seen them at all either.

But I think I’m doing okay. I really haven’t been watching what I’ve been eating like I should have and something happened like a week or so ago and I said you know I really need to do something about my knees.

They will not give me a TKR unless my BMI is down. So it’s one thing or another. Either I’m going to have a bad quality of life and continue hobbling around with a cane on my bad days or I’m going to do something about my weight and get my surgery.

Needless to say I’m doing something about it. I don’t feel ashamed or anything because I’ve been there done that it is what it is. I can’t focus on what I did or what I didn’t do. I have to focus on what I can do.

But I hope you can forgive me for not writing and keeping in touch. I guess I just needed to take time away from it. I know this covid-19 is making a mockery of people’s lives including mine.

I get tested weekly for the Cove and thank the Lord its been 17 weeks straight with none so far and I’m hoping that will continue.

I still love my job. I’ve learned a lot in fact my supervisor is leaving in 2 weeks to go to another place to work and I was doing her job for 4 months the summer so it won’t be nothing new except I won’t be getting paid for it haha.

  • Butter: Soften the butter but don’t melt it.
  • Garlic: mince the garlic
  • Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary: Fresh versions finely chopped
  • Salt and Pepper: Be generous for the meat.
  • Baby Potatoes Use red or yellow for perfect flavor and roasting
  • Olive Oil: Mild flavor

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a small bowl mix the butter, garlic, thyme, oregano, rosemary and salt and pepper.
  2. Layer: In a roasting dish, place the potatoes and toss with olive oil and salt and pepper. Place the lamb on top of the potatoes.
  3. Rub: Rub all the butter on the outside of the lamb
  4. Roast: Place in the oven and roast till internal temp reaches 145 degrees. About 1-1/12 hours depending on the size of your roast.

The Perfect Temperature

The internal temps of lamb are the same as beef. The official done temp is 145 degrees, this will result in a medium well done roast. If you’d prefer your lamb a different doneness here is a reference chart.

  • Rare: 115 to 120°F
  • Medium-rare: 120 to 125°F
  • Medium: 130 to 135°F
  • Medium-well: 140 to 145°F
  • Well-done: 150 to 155°F

Tips for the Perfect Crusted Lamb

  • Lamb: A lamb roast is the same thing as a boneless leg of lamb. So if all you can find is boneless leg of lamb, it’s the same. This recipe will work for both bone-in and boneless leg of lamb. It’s up to you.
  • Bring it to Room Temp:  This is super important to ensure even cooking. Especially if you have a bone-in leg of lamb. The bone will be cold, keeping the meat from cooking at an even rate, over doing the outside or under doing the inside.
  • Rest: Make sure you allow your meat to rest. This allows the meat to reabsorb redistribute the juices for more tender juicier roast. Keep in mind that as it rests it will continue to cook a bit.
  • Flavor:Lamb is the perfect meat to load on the seasonings. Don’t be shy. Add more or different seasonings to your liking.
  • Taste:  If some of your loved ones feel like lamb can taste “gamey” be sure to trim as much as the fat as possible. The “gamey” flavor is carried in the fat.

Storing the Crown Roast of Lamb

  • Serve: A great thing about roasted meat is it can sit at room temperature for up to 2 hours before it needs to be stored. This allows time to visit before you have to put it away.
  • Store: Cooled lamb can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days in an airtight container.
  • Freeze: Cool the lamb completely so no moisture collects which will form ice crystals. Store in the freezer for up to 2 months in a freezer safe container or bag.

Ingredients

  • 5-6 pounds lamb roast I used a boneless lamb roast

Instant Pot Black Beans

This really takes no effort at all. The instant pot does all the work and the result is worth it. These taste so much better than the canned version and give an extra fresh flair to what ever you use them in. It’s always a good thing when you know exactly what’s in your food and nothing gets better than doing something yourself.

The instant pot really is the awesome! Life is busy and it’s hard to take the time to cook your own beans when you have to presoak them. But with the Instant Pot you don’t have to presoak. You can put them in dry and they come out tender, tasty and have the best texture.

Black Bean Ingredients

Two simple ingredients, but so much better than the can! These are so good, and you can customize the flavor to your liking. The instant pot makes cooking beans so easy, you’ll love it!

  • Black Beans: Dried black beans, not from a can.
  • Vegetable Stock or Water: The Vegetable Stock will add flavor, so if you don’t want extra added flavor use water.
  • Optional Seasonings: Add these or other spices if you have a recipe in mind. Salt, Garlic, Cumin, Paprika and Cilantro.

Making Perfect Black Beans

Just a couple of steps to make perfect beans!

  1. Rinse:  Rinse the dry beans and pick out any bad ones.
  2. Instant Pot: Place the beans in the pot, add the liquid if desire the optional spices.
  3. Cook: Pressure cook on manual for 25 min. Let it naturally release for 15 min, then quick release the rest of the pressure. Stir and serve.

You will want to know this when you use your beans in a recipe that calls for canned beans. 

  • 1 pound dried beans = 2 cups dried beans = 5 cups cooked beans
  • 1 (15-ounce) can = 1 ½ cups cooked beans

  • To Spice or Not to Spice: If you don’t plan to use these in a specific recipe you can leave the seasonings out and use water to cook them in. You can also change up the spices to fit your ingredient needs.

  • Fridge:  Keep these ready to use in the fridge for 4-5 days.
