Crispy on the outside, ooey gooey on the inside Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Traditional Philly Cheese Steak stuffed into egg roll wrappers is an easy to eat finger food that is a delicious addition to any appetizer board. It’s also hearty enough to be a meal almost on its own. It’s ooey  and gooey and tender on the inside and crispy and delicate on the outside.

I love how these are so different from your traditional egg rolls, it’s a wonderous super tasty surprise. Everyone loves them. Take them to your next tailgate, holiday party or any occasion, they’ll be the first to be devoured.

Cheesesteak Egg Roll Ingredients:

You can find all of these ingredients in your local grocery store.

  • Oil– Enough oil for frying, peanut oil is the best for frying
  • Oil– Olive oil for sautéing
  • Green Pepper-Sliced thin
  • Onion-Sliced the same thickness as the peppers
  • Sirloin Steak- Thinly sliced
  • Monterey Jack Cheese-Shred your own cheese to avoid the anti caking agents that keep it from melting.
  • Beef Broth– You only need half a cup so reserve the rest for another recipe
  • Steak Sauce- Adds richness and a deep beefy flavor to the mixture
  • Egg Roll Wrappers- I can find these usually in the produce area in the refrigerated section

Making the filling for Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Making Egg Rolls!

Simple yet so scrumptious!!

  1. Heat- In a medium sized skillet heat about 1/2 inch of frying oil to 350 degrees
  2. Sauté-In a separate large skillet heat the olive oil and sauté the pepper and onion till almost tender and move to the side. Add the steak to the center and cook till no longer pink.
  3. Simmer-Add the beef broth, steak sauce and salt and pepper to taste. Let it simmer for a few minutes and then remove from heat and let cool.
  4. Assemble-Place the a scoop in the center of each egg roll and top with cheese. Fold and seal with a bit of water.
  5. Fry-Add the egg rolls to the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes till golden brown. Remove and drain.

Loading and Folding Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Tips for the Best Philly Egg Rolls:

  • Steak– Rib eye or flank steak can also be used. Even ground hamburger works. Cut your steak into bite sized pieces for easier eating and filling.
  • Cheese– Trade out the Monterey jack with provolone slices, swiss or spice it up with pepper jack cheese.
  • Peppers and Onions– Power up the color and use red, yellow or orange peppers, try using a red onion, chop them into bite sized pieces for easier eating.
  • Wrappers– Don’t be nervous about folding your egg rolls. There are usually directions on the back of the package. Make sure you use a bit of water on the edges to seal them good.
  • Sauce-These are ideal for dipping. There are endless possibilities. Try  your favorite cheese sauce, Ranch Dressing, Horseradish sauce, or BBQ sauce.

Crispy on the outside, ooey gooey on the inside Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Baking and Storing Egg Rolls:

  • Baking– Don’t want to fry them? You can bake them. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place egg rolls seam side down on a baking sheet so that they are not touching.  Spray the egg roll with nonstick cooking spray. Bake for 10-15 minutes till golden flipping 2-3 times while baking. If you want extra crispiness broil for one minute on each side.
  •  Storing- Egg rolls are best eaten fresh from the fryer while they are still crispy but you can reheat leftovers. Egg rolls will keep about 2-3 days in the fridge. When ready to reheat,  place in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. They’ll be tasty, just not as crispy.

9 Lifestyle Hacks To Improve Your Cardiovascular Health

The symbol of the heart is often associated with the feeling of ‘love’ in our minds. Although our heart has nothing to do with emotions or feelings, it does support our life by pumping oxygen-filled blood to the entire system. Hence, caring for the heart is not an option but an obligation. If you ‘love’ your heart the right way, it will serve you for years without fail.

Sometimes, you don’t need to move mountains to enhance the health of your heart. A few simple lifestyle changes can help promote cardiovascular health and minimize the chances of attacks. Let’s dig deeper.

Keep track of your blood pressure

High blood pressure is the cause of many health hazards. It can increase the risk of heart diseases, attacks, and strokes. Hence, people with moderate to high blood pressure levels should get it checked regularly to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If the levels are higher, you should visit your physician to get the necessary medications. So tracking your blood pressure can help you get the right treatment in time.

Quit smoking and reduce alcohol intake

Tobacco not only harms your lungs but also your heart. It builds plaques in the blood vessels and increases your chances of artery blockages and heart attacks. Alcohol also affects the heart, as it increases blood pressure to abnormal levels. Hence, quitting smoking is best for both your lungs and heart, and reducing your alcohol intake will ensure enhanced cardiovascular health.

Stay active and work-out

Both the young people and the elderly should work out regularly to keep their heart in good condition. If you don’t like the idea of a strenuous gym session, you can always enroll in yoga classes to enhance your mind besides strengthening your heart. You may check out some stylish yoga wear here to get the required motivation to start. Within three weeks or so, you’ll grow a habit of it, and after a few months, you won’t be able to live without it.

Include berries in your diet

Berries, like cranberries, raspberries, and Blueberries are said to have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the risk of heart diseases. They also contain a plethora of antioxidants that help lower oxidative stress in the body. Including these berries in your diet can promote heart health to a great extent. And they are tasty too.

Cut down on saturated fats

Too much red meat, cheese, butter, and creams can degrade the condition of your heart. Replacing them with lean meats and fatless dairy products can reverse the effect. You should also include green veggies and organic food in your diet to promote cardiovascular health. It will also lower your chances of getting obese, which is deemed harmful to the heart in many ways.

Get rid of stress

It may seem easy, but it’s not. Reducing stress and anxiety in your life can lower your chances of getting a heart attack. Practice breathing exercises regularly to calm your mind and focus on the positivity around. It also detoxifies your body and removes stress. Joining yoga classes offer manifold benefits, as you get proper guidance to practice stress-relieving exercises regularly.

Go for brisk walks

Besides working out, you should also go for brisk walks, preferably in the morning to fill your lungs with the fresh morning air. Walking reduces the risk of heart diseases and attacks. Hence, it’s recommended for the elderly the most, as they can’t join a gym to work out. However, walking benefits everyone, from adults to the elderly.

Sleep adequately

If you have insomnia or other sleep disorders, you should get it treated immediately. Such issues offer adverse effects to your overall health by increasing stress, as well as your cravings for sugared foods and drinks. If you sleep peacefully and regularly, you will be able to follow a healthy lifestyle and diet without grudging it.

Drink enough water

Often salted foods or heavy meals can lead to shortness of breath for people already suffering from heart conditions. Hence, it’s recommended to drink lots of water to dissolve the excess salt and stay hydrated. Drinking water also reduces your cravings for aerated drinks and sugared juices, all of which are harmful to your heart.

According to experts, obese people have higher chances of having heart attacks and strokes in the later stages of their lives. Working out should be your first step towards ensuring heart health. Buy stylish athleisure, shoes, and outfits, to motivate you to work out regularly without fail. You can also click photos for social media to be a part of the trend. Such little things will make you fall in love with exercise and promote cardiovascular health in the process.

A Powerful New Ad for Modibodi Period Underwear Has Been Banned by Facebook for Showing Menstrual Blood

Facebook has banned an ad from Australian period underwear brand Modibodi for its depiction of menstrual blood.

The ad, which premiered a week ago, boasts that Modibodi's selection of period underwear offers women a different experience of menstruation, sans uncomfortable tampons and lumpy pads.

The ad was praised by women for its seemingly authentic representation of the experience of having a period, with one woman featured clearly suffering from cramps, images of bloody sheets and sanitary products, and another woman rinsing the blood out of a pair of period underwear. The campaign also features women from diverse backgrounds and with a range of body types.

But Facebook has said the ad violates its guidelines about "shocking" and "sensational" content because of its images of menstrual blood. Modibodi has attempted to fight the ruling three times, but Facebook has maintained the ban, News.com.au reports.

Founder and CEO Kristy Chong said in a statement that Facebook's decision was "outdated". "Our aim for this film was to open people's minds by taking the stigma out of what is a perfectly natural bodily function for women. It was not made to be deliberately sensational or provocative, but to show the very real and natural side of periods.

"It's the 21st century and it's disappointing Facebook don't want to normalise the conversation around menstruation."

The ad, which runs on regional free-to-air and subscription TV, was also banned on YouTube at first but was later reinstated. The brand is expected to take out the three scenes using the colour red in order for the video to appear as an ad on Facebook. The original video is still available as a pinned post on Modibodi's Facebook page.

"From the very beginning, I was repeatedly told we'd need super glamorous models to make supposed unmentionable topics (menstruation and incontinence) tolerable to Australian women and the media," Kirsty's statement continued. "I refused to believe this was the only way we could have a presence in the market and from day one we've sourced customers or everyday women from diverse backgrounds to help model and sell our products."

If anything, it's refreshing to see a company honestly reflect the reality of being a person who menstruates, rather than the advertising norm of blue liquid and other metaphors for the normal bodily function. Avoiding showing images of blood just contributes to stigma and shame around menstruation and women's bodies.

Last year, more than 600 people complained about the first ad on Australian TV to show menstrual blood. The Libra ad included footage of a woman in the shower, with blood and water running down her legs, and a girl removing a bloody pad. At the time, as the ABC wrote, the industry body handling such complaints, Ad Standards, found that the ad did not breach the advertising Code of Ethics.

Here's to teaching women - and social media companies - that there's nothing shameful about periods, in all their bloody glory.

Life and Running During the Pandemic: Seven Months In

We're seven or so months into this little thing called COVID-19, and we're wondering:
How is your life and running during the pandemic?

We're collecting essays from the Another Mother Runner community about life and running during the pandemic during the month of October, and we'd love to hear from you.

Here are the guidelines:

—These are not essays about how you're doing the same thing every day. Nor are they politically oriented, a call to wear—or not wear—masks, or anything about conspiracy theories.

—Instead, Seven Months: My Life and Running During the Pandemic is an entry into a short, detail-rich story that has some kind of universal theme or resonance.

—The story doesn't have to be about running, nor does it have to have a happy ending—it can be funny, empathetic, enlightening, scary, whatever.

—500 word limit. (No exceptions!)

—We will run selected essays on this website, in our twice-weekly Another Mother Runner Newsletter, and on our Facebook page.

—All entries up for consideration must be received by October 11, 2020; send essay (again: 500 words max) and a picture of yourself (either a head shot or a vertical one of you running) to bamr@anothermotherrunner.com with subject line: Seven Months.

running during pandemic

Guilt is easy to come by these days. 10 hours of screen time a day? Check. The planned birthday trip to Japan cancelled? Check. Choosing between two bad options for school? Check.

Equally abundant is joy at what we have been given: Time as a family; ice cream runs at 2 p.m.; projects long delayed now completed. Every day I strive to focus on the abundance.

But guilt doesn't fight fairly. It's like a 200-pound gorilla boxing against a lightweight. Guess who wins?

Today's gorilla takes the shape of children who refuse to move their bodies. When the pandemic started and Minnesota was collectively sequestered, my kids each went for a short walk with me almost every day. Then a couple of times a week. Then randomly.

Now...never.

As a runner, I keep my depression, emotions, soul-sucking-pandemic-pit-of-despair, perimenopausal rage all in check by moving (okay, sometimes I keep them in check). I solve problems and write poetry while my feet bound off the pavement. I give my body what it needs one laced-up foot in front of the other.

My children spend all day in their bedrooms on technology; I am not exaggerating. All.Damn.Day. They have stopped moving. Yes, I recognize this as the pandemic depression and malaise. Hence, the guilt.

BUT/AND...my children are 16 and 11. We do not parent by dictatorship. They are independent people who get to decide what happens with their bodies.

BUT/AND...I worry about their depression and anxiety, about their atrophying muscles and unconditioned hearts.

BUT/AND...when do I pull parenting rank and demand movement?

I tried focusing on what's in it for them. I thought my 11 year-old would rise to the challenge of a mile a day She could track a streak on the calendar and sport her swanky running gear. Nope.

My 16 year old might find someone/way/thing that will convince her thatmovement will only help her constant growing pains and aching knees. Nope.

I have invited them to join me. I have quoted Coach Liz quoting Sir Isaac Newton so many times, the eye roll now starts before the fourth word is out of my mouth, "An object in motion..." I've tried, "We can do a mile and I'll drop you back off at home." "How about just a quick walk around the loop?" They have yet to take me up on it.

Why won't they listen to me and just do what I say?

So now I have decided to replace guilt with inspiration. I keep lacing up. I announce my mileage at dinner. I make sure Girlchild and AlsoGirl know when I am meeting up with BRFs for a long run. I say out loud, "I need a mental reset; heading out for a run." I do my strength training in the middle of the living room and invite any interested parties to join me (Dimity is a celebrity in our house).

And, if nothing else, I figure that gorilla will throw on some running shoes and keep me company.

8 Reasons Why a Plant-Based Diet is Good For You…

Firstly, we’re not going to drill you if you’re a meat-eater. We’re not about that. We would rather discuss our opinion with you, based on recent studies that continue to surface. And for years, registered dietitians and food scientists have toyed with the perks of eating plants while cutting back on meat, but people are only starting to clue onto it now.

So what are the studies?

A study published in the summer of 2016 noted that plant-based diets have gone mainstream – partly because the advantages have been well researched and healthcare practitioners recommend that this type of lifestyle has had incredible results, especially while helping treat patients for all types of ailments.

Why do we love a plant-based diet?

Because although it seems very overwhelming to give up meat, the sacrifice inevitably opens up doors to become beyond creative in the kitchen with a whole plant-based diet, of variety. Leading Gastroenterologist and New York Times Best Seller of ‘FIber Fueled’, Dr Will Bulsiewicz states ‘when you have a wide, broad mix of plants, you get a wide, broad mix of fiber that supports a wide, broad mix of microbes. Diversity in your plant diet translates into diversity in your microbiome.’ And his attitude is the reason why the plant aisle of your supermarket is a door waiting to open of abundance options of plants.

So should you give up meat?

Well as mentioned, that’s entirely up to you! If you need a study to help encourage you to see why meat could be causing a negative impact to your health, then we can provide you with one. Are you ready for it?

‘Diets high in animal protein have consistently been associated with increased growth of inflammatory microbes like Bilophila wadsworthia, Alistipes, and Bacteroides. These bacteria produce toxins like amines, sulphides and secondary bile salts. Amines cause food sensitivities at the base, and when you char meat, it turns them into carcinogenic heterocyclic amines. Hydrogen bile salts have been associated with ulcerative colitis. Secondary bile salts have been associated with cancer of the colon, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, and biliary tract’ Dr Will Bulsiewicz mentions in his recently published book, Fiber Fueled. So, at the very least it may be time to consider limiting your intake if you want to stick around a little longer.

So, what are the benefits of a plant-based diet?

  1. It keeps your weight in check: We’re not a community who promotes weight-loss for shallow reasons, we actually know now that a lot of extra weight can cause problems for your internal problems. Just eating ¾ cups of legumes per day for 6 weeks can result in a modest weight loss.

  2. It can reduce your risk of heart disease: A diet that relies on plant-based foods as opposed to animal-based foods may reduce the risk of up to an impressive 20 percent.

  3. It can lower your risk of colorectal cancer: Colorectal cancer is now the most common type of cancer in the United States. A study now suggests that people who ate a vegetarian diet had a 22 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer than those who didn’t. Consume whole grains and a variety of plants.

  4. It can reduce breast cancer: Young women who eat more high-fiber foods, especially fruit and vegetables are most likely to have a significant decrease in risk of getting breast cancer later on in life.

  5. It can reduce inflammation from autoimmunity issues: It can help lessen the inflammation and symptoms of autoimmunity problems. Whole plant-based foods are loaded with phytonutrients, many of which have anti-inflammatory properties and may help the body heal faster.

  6. It can extend your life: A study conducted in California found that a vegetarian or vegan diet is associated with lower mortality from all causes other than diets.

Above are some solid reasons why we think a plant-based diet is best for your gut health. If you’re not ready to tap out on meat, the very least you can do is just start adding more plants into your diet and to aim for as much diversity as possible within 7 days.

The TRUTH About Collagen Products

Hi angels,

Today, we’re discussing the truth about collagen products! Collagen is such a popular ingredient at the moment, but is there research to support its impacts on skin health, appearance and ageing?

Well the truth is, some sources of collagen are more powerful than others!

Marine collagen, for example, has been found to be 1.5 times more powerful than bovine or porcine sources of collagen.

Also, the purity of collagen is important! When looking for a collagen product, you want to ensure it is:

  • Highly bioavailable and absorbable (meaning you can absorb it well and actually benefit from using collagen!)
  • Digestible (so it doesn’t upset your tummy, and you can see the maximum benefits from using it!)
  • Sustainably-sourced (especially when you’re opting for marine sources of collagen)

The more I research collagen, the more I realise it’s SO important to find a really excellent quality source of collagen. In fact, this is what encouraged me to create my latest product, Vitality X + Collagen!

And this inner glow powder contains the most pure, bioavailable, powerful source of hydrolysed marine collagen available! This makes it far more absorbable, digestible and effective, with the research showing it supports collagen formation and health, skin hydration and elasticity, and anti-ageing and the reduction of wrinkles!

We only use 100% pure natural fish collagen peptides sourced from high-quality wild cod skin, sustainably sourced and harvested from the crystal clear waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

So next time you’re looking for a collagen product, remember they CAN be so incredibly powerful, but only if you choose the right product!

I hope this clears up some common confusion for you angels!
