After Instagram Music was finally introduced in Canada earlier this year, the platform is now back with a new feature: Instagram Reels. Offering a new way for Instagram users to create short videos a la TikTok, the feature allows people to create 15-second clips with music, audio, visual effects and new creative tools.
Some of these new creative features include Augmented Reality effects from an effects library created both by Instagram and creators all over the world; music from a vast music library with the option to add original audio as well; video editing tools like countdown, timer and a new align tool that lets people line up different takes when creating their Reels.
Users can share Reels with their followers in Feed, and those with a public account can choose to make them available to the wider Instagram community through a new space in Explore. To create these videos, select Reels at the bottom of the Instagram camera. On the left side of the screen will be a variety of creative editing tools such as Audio, AR Effects, Timer, Countdown and Speed.
Instagram Reels can be recorded in a series of clips (one at a time), all at once, or using video uploads from your gallery. Record the first clip by pressing and holding the capture button; you’ll see a progress indicator at the top of the screen as you record. Stop recording to end each clip. Once your reel is ready, move to the share screen, where you can save a draft of your reel, change the cover image, add a caption and hashtags, and tag your friends. After you share your reel, it will live on a separate Reels tab on your profile, where people can find the reels you’ve shared. You can also share your Reel to your Story, in which case it will behave like a regular Story and disappear after 24 hours.
Celebrities like Selena Gomez, Shakira, Will Smith and Patrick Starrr have already recorded and uploaded Reels on their own accounts. Gomez gave a tour of her fridge for the first time, while Shakira gave fans an inside look at one of her favourite hobbies, golfing.
Happy experimenting!
