Aussie darling Delta Goodrem opened up about a terrifying health scare that left her unable to speak following complications during surgery.
The singer took to Instagram over the weekend to explain how an issue with a salivary gland removal two years ago caused paralysis to a nerve in her tongue leaving her unable to speak. Which is absolutely terrifying when your voice is not only your livelihood, but your passion.
In a video filmed post-surgery in October 2018, a tearful Goodrem explains the toll this had taken on her mental and physical health to the camera: "I don't want to go out, I'm super embarrassed. I'm just over it. I'm just trying to stay positive." Adding, "My livelihood is my sound … I'm trying to decide whether this is getting any better or not. It doesn't feel like it."
The Voice judge also shared confronting footage from her hospital bed where she can be seen visibly upset and struggling to communicate post-operation. Luckily, after months of rehabilitation with daily speech therapy, Delta was able to fully recover and get her iconic voice back.
She went on to explain to fans the reason she'd kept her health battle private for so long, explain how she hadn't been "ready" to share it until now. With the launch of her newly released song "Paralyzed", she opened up about how the experience inspired her new music and that everyone has their own unique story to tell.
"I share this with you as an artist sharing where the poetry in this song comes from, and as a human who deeply feels and understands that everyone has their own story and their own challenges," she said.
Delta's video serves as a reminder that no one really knows what others are privately struggling with, "you never know what someone is going through and this is an extremely hard time for people. So I send this story to you with the message of hope and love."
