Members of Toronto’s Ballroom Community on Racism, Identity and Acceptance

In March, members of the Toronto ballroom community, including Tamar Miyake-Mugler and Aura Louboutin West, were in Chicago for the 19th annual Midwest Awards Ball when the news came that the Canada-United States border was closing. The event was cut short as they rushed home to Toronto.

This early period of the pandemic, with all the grief, anxiety and isolation of lockdown, was destabilizing for many. Cracks in our society—issues like systemic racism and police brutality—had widened. But under the pressures of the pandemic, these fissures, which disproportionately impact our poor, elderly, migrant and racialized populations as well as those living with disabilities or addiction, have been thrown into high relief. Though often invisible to white, middle-class, heteronormative society, their existence was not a revelation to anyone in ballroom.

“Welcome to what it feels like to not be able to be where you want to be—where you feel like you deserve to be—because it’s just not safe,” says Miyake-Mugler, a member of the iconic House of Miyake-Mugler. “I feel like the world’s getting a taste of what it feels like to be a visible minority… It’s the same isolated feeling.”

After being raised in a conservative Seventh-day Adventist household, Miyake-Mugler found ballroom at the age of 20 and is now, at 28, known as “the Queen of Canada.” She wants to be a visible presence for kids struggling with identity—to create a blueprint for how to live unapologetically and authentically and maybe even wind up in bright lights in Yonge-Dundas Square, one of the places where the Absolut Changemakers campaign she was cast in aired.

“There are not many scenes or communities where people like myself—who are Black, queer, underprivileged or all those things—can come together,” she says. “You feel like you belong, you feel you have a seat at the table, you feel ownership over the space.”

Ballroom was, in fact, created as a response to societal inequities, oppressive systems and the poor treatment of queer and trans people of colour. Its very existence was an act of resistance.

The roots of ballroom can be found in the extravagant drag balls of the 1910s, ’20s and ’30s held in New York, New Orleans, Chicago and Baltimore, the most notable of which were the Harlem festivities. Filled with pageantry and cross-dressing, these drag balls were elite, cosmopolitan affairs that mimicked debutante balls and other high-society events. But their status and popularity weren’t enough to save them from moral purity campaigns’ increasing preoccupation with homosexuality.

The drag circuit survived underground, but it was the racism within these balls that drove pioneers like Crystal LaBeija, a Black trans woman, to create a new scene in 1970s New York. The categories that entertainers could compete, or walk, in evolved along with the aesthetic. Gone was the Las Vegas-showgirl act. Performers emulated Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor and, later, supermodels like Iman, Christie Brinkley and Maud Adams.

Another pioneering icon, Paris Dupree, invented voguing, a new style of dance that incorporated poses from high-fashion magazines as well as ancient African art and Egyptian hieroglyphics. She helped shape competition categories like vogue, runway, face (beauty) and realness (the artistry to pass as a traditional member of the assigned gender- and status-coded archetype). When so much of the world is closed to you, walking is a way of taking back power. In ballroom, if you work hard, you can win—even if it is only in this arena.

“Being from a Christian Jamaican home, it’s very hard to live in the skin I’m in,” says Matthew Cuff, also known as Snoopy Lanvin of the House of Lanvin. “It wasn’t until I found vogue that I could be genuinely free in my skin and didn’t have to worry about gender boundaries or looking a certain way.”

toronto ballroom

Today, Cuff teaches at a premier studio, The Underground Dance Centre, and last year, he vogued onstage with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. But as a founding member of the Canadian House of Monroe in 2006, he also remembers the struggle to establish a community here. At the time, he says, dance hall and calypso were the most prominent sounds within the Black, gay club scene and even getting venues to play their music was a challenge. Finding allies like DJ Blackcat (a.k.a. Charmed Monroe) and opening key international house chapters in Canada helped to cement ballroom here.

The house system, founded by LaBeija in the 1970s, was more than just a way of organizing teams for competitions. Run by a “mother” or “father,” who serves as a mentor and surrogate parent, “children” take on the name of their house. Divided into mainstream and kiki (the training ground), people can join houses and walk different categories—sometimes with or against their “siblings”—in each scene. When the world doesn’t expect anything of you, having people to be accountable to can be a matter of survival, explains Miyake-Mugler, who first attempted suicide in grade school and never expected to make it to 18. She believes that if she had been exposed to more stories like hers growing up, she might not have had the same struggles with her mental health. As a mother in the House of Louboutin in Canada, she sees supporting her children as her life’s purpose.

“What I have to bring to the table is going to supplement what your biological mom could not do,” explains Miyake-Mugler. She wants kids to know it does get better. Today, she has a close relationship with her mother but with the first-hand understanding that not every parent or community is equipped to raise a queer or trans or even questioning child. Even the most accepting of these may not have the life experience to be the guiding force or role model their child needs.

Louboutin West, whose given name is Nikolaos Théberge-Dritsas, is the youngest, newest ballroom member on-set for FASHION’s knitwear shoot but he is already father of the Toronto chapter of the House of Louboutin and has co-hosted and organized balls at venues like Artscape Daniels Launchpad and Soho House Toronto. Still, he always carries with him a historical awareness and is cautious not to step on anyone’s toes. “I’m still a guest,” he says.

Miyake-Mugler, who recruited Louboutin West into the role of father, believes there’s space for everyone in ballroom as long as they enter as an ally and behave with integrity and respect. “It’s really important to have a space for LGBTQI people to just be and exist and let loose and feel welcome and feel included,” agrees Matthew Chiu, known as Dynasty Milan, who helped bring categories like runway, best dressed and hand performance to Canada. “Now more than ever, it’s amazing to hear people in Montreal or Vancouver say ‘I never saw an Asian person vogue until I saw you do it.’”

Milan discovered ballroom after moving to New York at 18 to attend the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He would tag along to rehearsals for the House of Ninja, founded in the 1980s by Willi Ninja. Known as “the godfather of voguing,” Ninja elevated the style of dance to new heights, becoming a sought-after choreographer in the process. He died of AIDS-related heart failure in 2006 at age 45, but the iconic house lives on in his name.

For a community that has endured so much, it’s a sense of belonging that has helped sustain them. “To just create something out of nothing—it’s really the tenacity of the human spirit,” says Milan. “It really is the beauty of inclusion.”

In news we all needed today, Annie Murphy and Catherine O’Hara are returning to a screen near you after being cast as the faces of the 2020 Hudson’s Bay holiday campaign, A Call to Joy.

The Emmy Award winning actresses appear in the campaign to rally all Canadians, whether you’re a Holiday Traditionalist, Festive Flaunter, Merry Modernista, Holiday Hibernator or a Yuletide Uniter. So I’m very happy to join this festive campaign celebrating Canadians and our colourful holiday season,” she said in a release.

Former FASHION cover star Annie says “the magic of the holiday season is spreading joy” noting that this is what this campaign is all about. As for what brings her joy over the holidays? “For me, that joy is sobbing through It’s A Wonderful Life in front of the family Christmas tree.”

To coincide with the campaign launch, Hudson’s Bay has also unveiled ‘The Holiday Hub’, a one-stop online shop for holiday presents for everyone on your list. Instagram Just Updated its Nudity Policy Thanks to a Plus-Size Model

A few months ago, plus-size model and activist Nyome Nicholas-Williams spoke out about how Instagram was repeatedly taking down images from a “confidence shoot” she had posed for. Both she and the photographer, Alexandra Cameron, say they also received warnings that their accounts would be closed down. So they wrote a letter to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, and eventually the platform responded by updating their nudity policy.

The photos in question showed Nicholas-Williams with her eyes closed and wrapping an arm around her breasts, which Instagram claims violated their pornography guidelines. Both Nicholas-Williams and Cameron allege that Instagram has a history of “allowing” nude photos of thin white women while censoring images of plus-size models and people of colour. According to the Guardian, “a wave of content creators then confirmed the platform was repeatedly discriminating against Black people, plus-size users and other marginalised communities, by deleting their photos or failing to promote them in the same way it did for its white users.”

In an interview with the Observer in August, Nicholas-Williams said: “Millions of pictures of very naked, skinny white women can be found on Instagram every day. But a fat Black woman celebrating her body is banned? It was shocking to me. I feel like I’m being silenced.”

A spokesperson from Instagram said to the Guardian that pictures of Nicholas-Williams were originally taken down as “we do not allow breast squeezing because it can be most commonly associated with pornography.”

Cameron, who has been a photographer for over a decade, said: “I have posted photos of many more women – white women – who had [fewer] clothes on than Nyome that never got reported or deleted. This was the first time it happened to me, and it kept happening because I kept reposting the pictures and they kept getting deleted, and you have to ask why. What is it about a plus-size Black woman’s body that is so offensive and so sexualised? The Playboy feed is filled with naked white models and it’s all for the male gaze, which is the opposite of what I do, and they’re allowed to stay.”

View this post on Instagram

📢Today is the day Instagram and Facebook changes their policy to ensure all body types- namely black plus sized bodies- are treated fairly on the platforms. As of today, Wednesday 28th October 2020, Instagram and Facebook will "allow content where someone is simply hugging, cupping or holding their breasts". To protect the younger users from potential pornographic content if a picture shows "breast squeezing in a grabbing motion or there is a clear change in the shape of the breasts", that content will be in breach of the rules. This policy change should allow them to better differentiate self expression/ art from pornographic content. The policy change is effective from today and will begin to be enforced from today however the external wording in the policy will be available to read from the 23rd November (I will pop the link in my bio so you can all have a read of it once live). Gina, Alex, and I are creating a typeform where you can upload info on any of your content that has been removed. This is in the interest of helping instagram ensure this policy is upheld and is as successful as it can be. The link will be available tomorrow to use in my bio (we are hoping it won’t be needed though). This is only the beginning, there is still much work to be done. Instagram and Facebook are taking steps in the right direction to ensure the plus sized community is protected, Instagram have said "In addition to this policy change, earlier this year we committed to broader equity work to help ensure we better support the Black community on our platform. This work is going to take some time, but we’re going to continue to provide updates. Our goal is that this work will get us closer to making sure Instagram is a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and free to express themselves", I will continue to hold Instagram to account to ensure this happens.. This is a huge victory for the black plus sized community and a great early birthday present! Thank you to every single one of you who reposted, or used the iwanttoseenyome hashtag; you helped amplify our voices and pushed our campaign forward.

A post shared by Nyome Nicholas – Williams (@curvynyome) on

Following Nicholas-Williams and Cameron’s open letter to the platform’s head (written in conjunction with activist Gina Martin) and a groundswell of social media support, Instagram and its parent company Facebook have updated their policy on nudity in order to help end discrimination of plus-size Black women on its platforms and ensure all body types are treated fairly. The new policy came into effect last week.

“This is a huge step and I am glad a dialogue has now been opened,” said Nicholas-Williams. “I want to ensure that I am respected and allowed to use spaces like Instagram, as many other creators do, without the worry of being censored and silenced.”

How to beating bloating

Dr Sunni Patel

Earlier this year, I had the privilege to give the 2020 Miss Universe GB Finalists a brief session on gut health and bloating and as we approach the time of year where stodgier foods are more frequently appearing in our diets, I thought it could be useful to revisit.  Many of us may worry about bloating , be it from IBD or IBS, but especially at social events.

Firstly, let’s cover the misconceptions around bloating. Bloating isn’t water retention but in fact air pressure that builds up in the intestines as a by-product from the gases created by gut bacteria. For that very reason it means bloating doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all approach to alleviating; as we are all so different in terms of our gut bacteria composition. Finally, and most importantly of all, it’s not just about eliminating, or increasing foods that are known to cause or reduce bloating respectively. There is much more to beating the bloat than meets the eye.

It really is important to look at gut health as a whole in this instance. It has been shown that the imbalance in gut bacteria; known as dysbiosis, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) underlies bloating and gastro-intestinal issues (1). Therefore, maintaining gut health and balance will in turn help keep gut gassiness in check.

So, here are a few tips and reasonings to beat bloating.

  1. Understanding allergies and intolerances

Certain intolerances may lead to bloating, so it is important you seek medical or diet advice to understand if the bloating (only if it is long term as opposed to intermittent) is due to certain dietary issues.

  1. Look at what you are eating (and drinking)

Ensure you are getting adequate fibre in your diet; the recommended daily intake is 30g per day. This not only helps to support gut health as a prebiotic for the gut bacteria, it also helps to avoid constipation; known to affect bloating and worsen symptoms (2).

As well as fibre, ensure you are achieving optimal gut health by adding appropriate sources of probiotics to your diet. This can come in the forms of kimchi, sauerkraut, fermented foods like tofu as well as kefir water.

Some advocate taking on the low-FODMAP (FODMAP stands for fermentable oligo-, di-, mono- saccharides and polyols which are short chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that can’t be absorbed well or are poorly digested by the body) diet over some time, which excludes gassy foods like garlic, onions, bananas, artichokes, beans and pulses to name a few and have proven its efficacy in combating IBS symptoms (3).

Keep hydrated but be sure to reduce and avoid carbonated drinks and sugar alcohols. Water is always best.

  1. It’s also about how you eat

As tempting as it is this time of year, listen to your body and try to avoid the indulgence of gluttony and overeating When you do eat, ensure you are chewing thoroughly to aid digestion and transit of food through the gut. Small and regular portions throughout the day can help to maintain digestion. There is also some research on chronobiology and circadian rhythms, i.e. your natural body clock, and around time-restricted eating, but ensure you allow for three hours digestion time before sleeping where possible (4).

  1.  Stay gut healthy by focussing on you

Gut health and beating the bloat isn’t just about the food you eat, but the lifestyle you lead.  Ensure you make time to minimise stress, keep active, get adequate rest and sleep as well as avoid long periods of wearing tight clothing.

New superberry powder made from the haskap berry

Haskapa is a brilliant and new superberry powder made from the haskap berry. Supported by scientific research, the haskap berry is emerging as one of the most exciting new superfoods. With triple the antioxidants of the blueberry, the haskap berry also has one of the highest recorded anthocyanin values of any berry on the planet.

Their deep blue skin and crimson flesh give haskaps 3 times the antioxidants and 4 times the anthocyanins of blueberries and have one of the highest recorded anthocyanin values of any berry. Scientists are recommending we consume 50mg anthocyanins per day, this is equivalent to one teaspoon of Haskapa freeze dried powder.

We tried it with our morning protein smoothie and sprinkled on our greek yoghurt. It tasted really good and we loved the super colourful fruit powder. It certainly kicks a punch with it’s flavour and is a perfect start to the morning. Fruit powders are also a good way to add some flavour and colour on your porridge this winter and we also think it would make a lovely natural food colouring for cakes and puddings.

You can find out more about this super berry at www.haskapa.com

Ketoscan Mini, the Worlds’ first cartridge-based Ketone Analyzer

A lot of people are actively trying to figure out the best and most effective way to monitor their body ketones. I used to be one of those people.

Being a fitness buff, I’ve always been particular about what I ingest into my body and how that affects my health.  One of the things I pay close attention to is the level of ketones in my body. Checking ketone levels is not always a simple process (at least not until I discovered Ketoscan Mini), I had to endure being poked with needles for the blood strip method. To be honest, I wasn’t comfortable with being poked with a needle, so when I heard of the Ketoscan Mini, I immediately tried it out. I’m really glad I did.

The whole procedure was quite simple (took a while to get the breathing right but the app made it fun).  Once you have completed your breath sample, you get an instant report of your body’s level of ketosis.

It is fast and gives very accurate results. When I first unboxed the KetoScan Mini, I spent some time reading the user manual and checking out the app functions before trying it out.  Both are simple to understand – the device is very easy to use.

Whilst there are other electronic analysers that are much cheaper than Ketoscan Mini, they are based on breathalyser sensors rather than being specifically designed to detect Ketones.  The electro-chemical cartridge in the Ketoscan Mini lasts for over 300 tests, but makes the device far more sensitive and accurate – and once the unit tells me it’s empty, I simply return it for a service and it comes back with a new cartridge fully calibrated ready to go.

The reviews on the Ketoscan Mini are also excellent – there are several on YouTube, as well as the website and I can see why.  It can be used on its own or alongside the KetoScan Mini app which you can download from either Google play store if you’re on android or the App Store if you’re on iOS.  The app is free and contains no in-app purchases.

It can be used conveniently anywhere, at any time. The device is small and portable (smaller than a phone), rechargeable via USB and comes with a pouch which makes it easy to take it anywhere. Whilst a blood monitor is also relatively easy to carry around, it’s not that convenient to use in public places (Imagine poking yourself with needle and squeezing out blood from your finger in a subway or restaurant!). With the Ketoscan Mini, you just blow into the device and check the result on your phone. It looks very much like you’re using an inhaler, so people won’t pay much attention to you and the situation won’t seem weird or inappropriate.

It is also much cheaper in the long run than blood tests. On average, I used to spend around £1 per strip on blood tests while using the blood monitor, but although the Ketoscan Mini costs around £179, I don’t have to spend money on any more strips and I only have to replace the sensor cartridge in the device after 300 uses (about 12 months of usage) at a cost of £39 – so just 13p per test.

It also comes with 5 extra mouth pieces in case you want to share with others.

Overall, the Ketoscan Mini is a fast, cost effective way to monitor your ketosis level with guaranteed result accuracy. You should try it out!

Fashion and Female Empowerment: 6 Celebrities Setting an Example

For decades now, the fight for gender equality has become a prominent issue. Since the rise of feminism, multiple marches of progress have encouraged women to speak out about their experiences with gender inequality. With this said, the fight towards a world that promotes the feminist movement across all industries has never been more important.

One industry in particular where we have a seen many instances of gender inequality is the celebrity and fashion sector. For centuries, stereotypical expectations of women and prescribed gender notions have restricted individuals from truly exploring their fashion tastes and preferences. But now, we begin to see a change. Celebrities are now using their platform to their advantage to make powerful speeches and fashion choices regarding gender equality.

Celebrities and promoting equality via everything from speeches, to clothing,  and even women’s sportswear and trainers. Here, we discuss six celebrity icons that have used their fame for good and joined us in the fight for a gender-equal future.

Olivia Wilde

American actress and filmmaker Olivia Wilde has been snapped sporting numerous fashion pieces that highlight her commitment towards the feminist movement. A T-shirt saying ’The more we are a choir, the more the tune is forced to change’ was one of her many strides towards promoting equality. Not only that, during her appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen show, she wore a sheer black skirt that was embroidered with the word “feminist” all around it.  She is not shy about her commitment towards a more equal future.

Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung, a fashion designer, had models wear T-shirts that embodied everything that feminism is all about. Including quotes that addressed powerful phrases such as ‘The future is female’, ‘Our minds, our bodies, our power’, and ‘Nevertheless, she persisted’, his fall presentation spoke volumes across the industry.

Inspired by the Women’s March he attended in New York City in January, this was the catalyst for inspiration to his catwalk event. The event saw models including Bella Hadid, Marquita Pring, and Candice Huffine, wearing T-shirts that stressed the need for equality and acceptance. Gurung argues that feminism should be more than a ‘trending topic’, but a movement that should continue striving for change.

Bella and Gigi Hadid

Bella Hadid has jumped on board the movement to raise awareness of gender equality through her fashion choices. Photographed in a tee that read ‘The future is female’, she, along with many other celebrity faces, used their platform and popularity for good.

As for her sister Gigi, she too is a supporter of this powerful movement. In 2017, she became the centre of fashion news in the media after posting a photo on Instagram of her in a boxing-style pose while  sporting armpit hair.  Whether this was a deliberate act of rebellion against expectations when it comes to women’s body hair or simply a personal preference of Gigi’s, she made a bold statement that defied the unwritten rules regarding what is considered to be feminine and masculine.

Aimee Song

Walking alongside Bella in Gurung’s fall fashion show, Aimee Song is another feminist supporting the fight for equality. Not only is Song a fashion model that was photographed in a T-shirt that read ‘We will not be silenced’, she uses her blog and social media channels to address issues regarding her own insecurities as a woman. Song is  another powerful voice that helps abolish the stereotypical expectations of women across the industry.

Dita Von Teese

Renowned for being one of the world’s most famous burlesque performers, Dita Von Teese persistently uses her fame and celebrity platform to highlight how important the role of her shows play to today’s audience. She describes the burlesque shows she performs in as being a ’new brand of feminism‘ that teaches women to be comfortable and accepting of their sexuality.

As part of her shows, she is also famous for her chic, glamorous, and bold fashion choices. From vintage-inspired stage looks to ritzy red-carpet dresses, Von Teese uses her platform to teach women to embrace their body shapes and wear what you prefer. Own it!

The rise of feminism plays an integral part in today’s society, helping create greater gender equality for the generations both before and after us. As the movement towards the commonly referred to ‘gender quake’ commences in full swing, the role that celebrities play in using social institutions such as the fashion industry to drive change has never been more important.

Pecan Tassies

A pile of pecan tassies on a sheet of baking paper

A little like mini pecan pies, these Pecan Tassies are easier to make and every bit as delicious. The flaky cream cheese crust with maple and pecan filling is a perfect combination for the holidays and totally addictive.

From these Butter Pecan Cookies to these Best Ever Pecan Pie Bars and One Hour Caramel Pecan Sticky Buns, pecans are a definitely favourite around these parts.

A pile of pecan tassies on a sheet of baking paper

Pecan Tassies Recipe

There are so many things that make pecan tassies so special and also unique. You’ll notice the crust has no sugar in it, but with the sweet filling, it’s a perfect balanced mouthful.

  • The crust is incredibly light and flaky and uses a combination of butter, cream cheese flour and ground pecans.
  • Toasted pecans give a more intense nutty flavour whilst also providing extra crunch.
  • Maple syrup adds a very distinct flavour and sweetness.

Small stacks of pecan tassies on a sheet of baking paper

Ingredients in Best Pecan Tassies

Obvious things like flour and sugar are definitely in there but, as I mentioned above, there are a few ingredients that make pecan tassies truly unique and should not be substituted.

  • Pecans: while other nuts can be used, they wouldn’t be pecan tassies without them and pecans have a slight bitterness that works perfectly with the brown sugar and maple syrup.
  • Cream Cheese: this is used in the crust for the texture. You won’t really notice a different flavour but the it adds fat and softness without adding extra liquid. This keeps the dough pliable and helps it get nice and crispy.
  • Maple Syrup: This is a must-have ingredient and gives an amazing flavour plus a little sweetness too.

How to Make Pecan Tassies Cookies

What I really love about this pecan tassies recipe is it’s simplicity. The dough is made in a few minutes in a food processor and the filling just beaten together. They really are just so incredibly easy to make!

The Crust

  1. Grind the nuts: In a food processor, just pulsing until they are in quite small pieces and there are no big chunks left (image 1).
  2. Add the rest: of the ingredients to the food processor and blend until it’s starts clumping together (image 2).
  3. Rest: you’ll pull the dough together (image 3) then chill it for 45 minutes to 1 hour
  4. Press into tin: You can just cut the dough up into 24 even pieces and press them into mini muffin tin holes but my preference is to roll the dough out first, use a cookie cutter to cut circles and they tend to be a little neater.

The Filing

  1. Toast the pecans: This is optional but intensifies the pecan flavour. Just scatter them on a baking tray and bake for 7-8 minutes at 350F.
  2. Mix the filling: Whisk together the remaining ingredients until well combined. Just a hand whisk for 30 seconds or so.
  3. Assemble: Chop the toasted pecans up roughly, then divide them equally among the 24 tart cases, top them with the filling (image 4) , then bake.

Tips and Variations for Mini Pecan Tassies

  • The dough: The dough is quite soft, so don’t play with it too much or the heat from your hands will melt it. Also, don’t skip the chilling time it helps the dough relax and also more easy to work with.
  • Storage: store pecan tassies in an airtight container, in a cool spot for up to 5 days.

Ingredients

FOR THE CRUST

  • cup pecans
  • 4 ounce 1 stick unsalted butter, cold
  • 4 ounce cream cheese cold
  • 1 cup flour

FOR THE FILLING

  • ½ cup toasted pecans, roughly chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • To toast the pecans (optional but recommended), scatter them on a baking tray and bake for 7-8 minutes at 350F / 180C / 160C fan forced.

FOR THE CRUST

  • Place the ⅓ cup pecans into a food processor and pulse until very small pieces.
  • Add the flour, butter and cream cheese. Process on low just until it starts clumping. This will happen very quickly, so don't over-process.
  • Tip the dough out onto a sheet of baking paper, pull it into a disk with your hands then chill for 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 350F / 180C / 160C fan forced.
  • Grease a 24 hole mini muffin tin well with baking spray (or grease with butter, then dust well with flour).
  • Roll the dough out between two sheets of baking paper until very thin.
  • Use a cookie cutter, to cut out small circles just slightly larger than the muffin holes, then press them into the holes up the sides so they reach the top.
  • Place the tray in the freezer for 10 minutes.

FILLING AND ASSEMBLY

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla and salt until well combined and looking a little frothy on top.
  • Divide the chopped pecans evenly among the tart cases then top each with roughly 1 ½teaspoons of the filling mixture, or until evenly divided.
  • Bake 22-25 minutes until golden and puffed.

5 Trendy Indo-Western Style Ideas for Men

Indo-western outfits have been ruling the fashion market for decades. The latest fashion trends offer an eclectic mix of Indian and western apparel for men. Indo-western men’s wear is a popular choice among men to dress up for a wedding or any traditional occasion. You may find hundreds of options in Indo-western dresses for men, including sherwani, Indo-western suits, and Nehru jackets. Men’s fashion has evolved over the years, and men are taking their style seriously. They don’t shy away from experimenting with their outfits anymore.

Let us look through five Indo-western dresses for men that are creating a buzz in the fashion galleries.

Indo-western Sherwanis

Sherwani is a fine, ethnic men’s wear that has garnered attention from men across the globe. It is by large the most worn outfit at Indian weddings. From groom to guests, everyone shares a common interest in sherwani at traditional festivals. You may observe men donning an Indo-western sherwani during Eid and Diwali. Many designers take the garment and trends into account to create a newer collection of Indo-western dresses for men. It includes Indo-western suits and sherwanis in the first place. They leverage the cultural significance to reach the masses prominently.

Indo-western Suits

Men look dapper in a stylish Indo-western suit. It exudes charm and makes men stand out in the game of fashion. You can pair up an embroidered or solid kurta with a silhouette trouser. You can also experiment by wearing a dhoti over a western jacket look. You can find hundreds of colours and patterns in Indo-western suits at Readiprint Fashions. How about turning heads at your friend’s wedding sporting a navy blue kurta with dhoti and a Nehru jacket? Give it a try!

Nehru Jackets

Nehru jackets play multiple roles when it comes to Indo-western men’s wear. You can pair it with a kurta, chinos, Jodhpuri pants, jeans, or silhouette trousers. Nehru jackets have been widely accepted as a polished garment for men. The jacket is no more limited to style with formal attire. You can notice men wearing a fusion of Indo-western outfit at weddings. Take note of a styling tip: you can pair a Nehru jacket with collared shirts or round tees with men boots.

Waistcoat Suits

You don’t want to go overboard styling yourself at your wedding function. While sherwani would be tiring and simple kurta pajama won’t live up to the occasion. Try adding an element of fusion in your kurta pajama look. Add a waistcoat to your outfit, and you’re ready for praises. You may attract attention due to your fine taste in fashion. There are different colours and styles available in waistcoats. Choose the one that graces your outfit and complements the vibe of the occasion. Indo-western men’s wear lets you express the modern man in you.

Indo-western Blazers

A stylish Indo-western blazer outfit simply earns you some laurels. Pair it up with a decent kurta pajama to accentuate your look. It is one of the most popular Indo-western men’s wear that never fails to impress. Many celebrities choose an Indo-wester blazer to pair with their kurta pajama or kurta dhoti look. A Nehru jacket is fine to wear on a brunch or a simple gathering, but Indo-western blazers set the tone for a wedding function.
Use these ideas to create a perfect Indo-western outfit for your next big celebration. Don’t hustle much to search through different places.

Roxy Jacenko Subtly Claps Back at SAS Australia's Directing Staff Who Said She Was "Horrendous" on the Show

On Saturday, PR guru Roxy Jacenko was sledged by SAS Australia Directing Staff instructor Ollie Ollerton during an interview with news.com.au as being "horrendous from the outset" and that she was the celeb who disappointed him the most during filming.

A day later, Jacenko pulled out the receipts from her DM's that prove otherwise. Sharing a screenshot on her Instagram story she showed an exchange between the pair that shows the "the reality of the reality".

"Be proud, people have no idea what the reality is like, amplified by injury x," Ollie wrote to Roxy the night after her one and only episode aired.

The screen grab also shows an earlier message from the DS chatting about a possible business relationship. "I have a business venture I want to launch in Aus, maybe you could help? But go relax first," he said, to which Roxy welcomed the opportunity, "Yes! For sure! - it would be a pleasure" she replied along with her email, assumably to pursue the opportunity further.

Pretty interesting interactions for someone who deemed her "horrendous" from the outset. . .

In the same interview with news.com.au Ollie also disappointed that Love Island star Eden Dally didn't give the series enough of a crack during his time, "To be honest, I expected more from Eden, I just felt he had more to give. I was a little bit disappointed with his efforts."

And that the SAS process would have done Arabella Del Busso "a world of good" had she stuck it out. "The girl who lied . . . I've forgotten her name . . . Arabella. That the (SAS Australia) process would have done her the world of good, but I think she's got a fair few demons that pushed her over the edge and kept her from going any further."

As for his stand outs, former Bachelorette Ali Oetjen and AFLW star Sabrina Frederick's journeys throughout the series really impressed him.

"Sabrina (Frederick) was extremely impressive, first of all, she stood up to the Badger and went toe to toe with him. We didn't tell her to do that, she just took the hardest, biggest guy that she could. She did exactly what we wanted her to do but we didn't tell her to do it. That was amazing, she earned our respect massively for that."

And as for Ali, "She initially was a bit of a concern and we thought she wasn't going to last," Ollie said. "All of a sudden she did a U-turn, something just switched. It seemed to be after her interview in the mirror room. There was a turn after that. She was like a phoenix rising from the ashes. We'd written her off but all of a sudden she pulled it out of the bag and was very impressive."

At the moment, Ali, Sabrina and Eden are all still competing on the series.
