Winnie Harlow Talks Ontario Beginnings and Opening the Door for Others

“I don’t think I realized at first that I was different,” says Toronto-raised, Los Angeles-based model Winnie Harlow of how a childhood vitiligo diagnosis impacted her notion of what her life would be like. “That was due to my upbringing. It wasn’t until I was out in the world that I could sense the differences.”

While reactions to Harlow’s appearance have shifted from devastating bullying to praise and admiration, her uniqueness is what ultimately made her a star in the fashion sphere. Vogue covers and catwalk appearances at some of the most exclusive events, like Jean Paul Gaultier’s 50th anniversary show, speak to the power of her self-possession and determination, and these are traits she has been cultivating for quite some time.

“My grandmother took me with her to pick up my cousin at school one day, and a little kid came up to me and was like, ‘What’s on your skin?’” she recalls. “My grandmother has a very strong personality and is very confident, and I was raised around her. She remembers me replying ‘Child, my skin is none of your business.’ That was my energy growing up.”

Harlow’s ability to retain and expand that energy has led to her landing campaigns for Puma, Fendi and Diesel — all lofty achievements after less than a decade in the industry. Her foray into modelling began after a friend urged her to attend a casting call for the annual Fashion Art Toronto event. Harlow, who was working at La Senza in Yorkdale Shopping Centre at the time, put off the suggestion, but her friend persisted and Harlow gave in. “I thought I should at least try,” she says. “I got off work one day and took a bus to the casting; I was in a ton of shows that week. It was encouraging, and I’m really happy that I listened to my friend.”

It was a breakthrough moment for Harlow in terms of showing her “what the fashion industry could look like.” Up until that point, she’d been rejected by modelling agencies. “People didn’t really know what to do or where to place me or how to book me because it had never been done before,” she says. “That was my challenge in the beginning. I just had to make a voice for myself to be heard.”

Harlow’s ambition was bolstered through meeting TV and online personality Shannon Boodram, who discovered her and made a viral video clip in 2011 about vitiligo and the fact that it didn’t detract from Harlow’s standout qualities. “I’m grateful for Shannon’s eye — for seeing a story there,” says Harlow. “She was the first person to say she could see me on the cover of Vogue. It wasn’t something I could visualize because I hadn’t seen it. But she had that visionary eye.”

In fact, Harlow remembers looking at posters in the store where she worked — all featuring “white girls with blond hair and blue eyes” — and thinking she wanted to be in that position one day. “I worked at La Senza and ended up walking the runway for Victoria’s Secret,” she says. “That was a full-circle moment for me.”

The tenacity Harlow has exhibited throughout her career perhaps shines most brightly when she speaks about her fears. Reminiscing about our cover shoot in southern California’s Joshua Tree National Park (a locale known for its intimidating wildlife), she says, “I thought about there being snakes, and that was kind of scary, but I worked around them before, for a Nike shoot.” She is also afraid of swimming, but she learned the skill in order to do an underwater photo shoot. “While I did cry at one of the lessons, I went back and kept pushing myself. I’m just the type of person who can’t let my fears stop my progression.”

While Harlow doesn’t allow dread to consume her, when speaking about the anxiety that the uncertainty of 2020’s events has caused, she says that she “tends to internalize things a lot. Sometimes it’s hard to verbalize things that are complicated or frustrating, but it’s good to talk about them.” Her go-to confidants include her mother and her boyfriend, NBA player Kyle Kuzma — she flew to Orlando to join in his team’s quarantine “bubble” this past August.

Touting her Jamaican grandmother (a fellow Leo) as a strong influence in her life, Harlow now counts Naomi Campbell as a “powerful force” in her career, adding that the legendary supermodel called her on her birthday this year. This connection is a long way from her attempts to enter the fashion industry so many years ago, when she was told that if she wanted to work in the industry, she “should be a makeup artist.”

Now, Harlow is in demand for not only her beauty but also the ingenuity she brings to editorial shoots. “I take pride in being more involved in the process now,” she says of her work, reflecting on how social media has allowed her to feel more connected to her followers — although her favourite interactions with them are still when she meets them on the street during fashion week.

“I remember getting a DM from a fan in the Middle East who also has vitiligo,” she says of her fortuitous interaction with Shahad Salman. “She showed me comparison pictures of her and me, and they were so similar. A while later, I had the opportunity to do a Vogue Arabia cover, and we were trying to figure out how we could make it powerful. The idea struck that we could have a shoot with Shahad. It’s not just about me being the first; it’s about me being able to open the door for others.”

This notion sets Harlow apart from others in the fashion industry — an industry that’s notoriously narrow in terms of who it allows into its realm. And it exemplifies the idea that if people have someone to look up to, which she points out she didn’t have when it came to modelling, it can make a world of difference.

Harlow’s desire to broaden perceptions is also evident in her downtime activities; one of her favourite stress relievers is spending time with a colouring book. “Disney princesses are my thing,” she says. “I do my own takes on them. I like to make them ethnic or Black, because there wasn’t a Black Disney princess for a very long time. I like to switch it up and make a character be from a different race or have different hair — give her a pink lace-front wig instead of black or blond flowing hair. I’ve done pink ombré wigs myself — I want to see myself as a Disney princess as well.”

As imaginative as her approach can sometimes be, Harlow is also quick to highlight the importance of keeping ideas and admiration grounded in reality. “I don’t personally believe in role models, because a role model by definition is someone who’s put on a pedestal and looked at as something that’s not even human,” she notes. “We are all humans…. You can’t think that anyone in the world is perfect, and that’s what that ideal of a role model suggests. I look at people off the pedestal and think that we are all equal. It’s more about inspiration.” And that’s something that Harlow, more than most, knows a thing or two about.

Bacon Wrapped Chestnuts

These Bacon Wrapped Chestnuts are made with sweet chestnuts, that are enveloped in a savory bacon and marinated in a sweet spicy sauce for the perfect flavor combination. These little morsels of bite sized heaven deserve a spot on every party table!

Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts Recipe

The saltiness of the bacon swaddles the crunch of the water chestnuts with a little sweetness from the sauce makes the perfect flavor combination. These are hard to stop eating, so it’s a good thing it’s a big batch. And you can double it!

Ideal for every occasion from New Year’s Eve to tailgating these look so refined but are super simple to make. They take a little time to assemble and put together but it’s worth it when these go flying off the plate. You might want to make more than you think you’ll need. Everyone loves these little appetizers.

Saucy, Sweet, and Savory Chestnut Ingredients

Simple ingredients combine for huge flavor! These bacon chestnuts won’t last long.

  • Whole Water Chestnuts: Sweet, nutty and slightly fruity these are a delicate vegetable.
  • Bacon: You can use turkey bacon as well
  • Brown Sugar: Use light or dark brown sugar for ultimate caramelization
  • Sweet Chili sauce: Adds just the perfect heat and spice.
  • Mayonnaise: Adds creaminess and depth to the sauce.

Assembling Bacon Water Chestnuts

A little bit time consuming but not hard to do, these are so worth it. They are unexpectedly delicious!

  1. Cut: It is best to cut the bacon in half since the chestnuts are smaller and easier to wrap around.
  2. Wrap: Simply wrap the bacon around the water chestnuts
  3. Mix: In a small bowl mix the brown sugar, sweet chili sauce and mayo together. Pour over the wrapped chestnuts.
  4. Marinate: Place in the fridge for at least 2 hours to meld the flavors together.
  5. Bake: Bake for 45 min. at 350 degrees. Broil the top for about 5 min at the end to crisp up the bacon.

Tips for The Best Chestnut Appetizer

The combinations of flavor is amazing and the sauce is so savory! 

  • Toothpick: To get the toothpicks through the chestnuts use toothpicks with a flat end so you can push it through easily. Pierce the Chestnut as close to the center as possible so they don’t split.
  • Split: If the chestnuts do split, rewrap the bacon tighter and try to skewer so both halves are attached.
  • Foil: Use foil to line your pan to help with the clean up.
  • Bacon: Thinly sliced bacon will cook faster and crisp up nicely. Try to buy bacon with even sliced pieces. For even sweeter flavor use maple flavored bacon.

Can you Make Water Chestnuts Ahead of Time?

  • Make ahead of time: Because these marinate anyway you can make these ahead of time and bake right before the occasion.
  • Store: Once baked they do keep in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven at 350 for about 10-15 min. Do not Freeze.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans whole water chestnuts
  • 1 pound bacon can use turkey bacon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

Instructions

  • Cut the strips of Turkey Bacon in half.  Wrap around the water chestnuts and stick toothpick in center to hold in place.  Place in a 9x13 pan.
  • Mix the brown sugar, sweet chili sauce, and mayonnaise together.  Poor the sauce over the bacon wrapped chestnuts.
  • Marinate in the fridge for 2 hours.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.  Broil the top for about 5 minutes at the end to crisp the bacon a little.

Jacques-Claude Sader on How He Became a Fearless Gender-Blending Fashion Lover

I used to feel like I was playing a role that I hadn’t signed up for. I love embracing masculine and feminine energy in how I dress today, but growing up in Australia, when I found I wanted to express myself in a way that was different from the heterosexual masculine conventions I was born into, I felt very confused and lost. I was so afraid and unsure of how I could explore another way of dressing because of the community I was surrounded by.

I’m Lebanese, and Middle Eastern culture is very tough, especially for someone who, like me, is queer and outspoken. I was baffled by how freely people in other countries express themselves. Australia is very slow in terms of human rights progress and how people are allowed to identify. It’s also very isolated, so it’s not influenced by outside factors, like how it is in North America. I was never able to live the way I wanted to — 100 per cent authentically — and in my youth, I lived vicariously through other people.

I had a friend—my first in the LGBTQ+ community I eventually became part of—who was also Middle Eastern but was very carefree in how he dressed and acted. I saw him being his authentic self and I thought, “Why is that person able to do it and not me?” I’ve come to believe in being “self-full” and not selfless; I deserve to be happy and to not always have to worry about everyone else’s feelings when it comes to my happiness. And it’s my responsibility as a queer person of Middle Eastern descent to be that example for someone. I need to hold myself accountable for things I’m doing because I’m punishing myself and others when I’m not living for myself.

READ…. There is nothing more beautiful than looking back at your growth, journey and the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back at the photo on the left, l see someone who tried to fit in to wherever he could, tried to please everyone in his life but himself, so afraid of not being accepted by his family, community, culture and the world. Growing up in a traditional Lebanese family, expressing my femininity was something I was terrified of doing, so I used to try to cover it. Performing in ways that I never identified as, I felt like I was playing a role I never signed up for. As @mylessexton would say (straight drag). I continuously felt lost, confused and misunderstood, but I came to realise that I am beautiful inside and out and I could be exactly who I want to be. So I decided to change  my life, but long story short I had to make a huge shift in my world to be SELFULL for my happiness and not selfless. After making those changes, I was blessed that people were able to see something in me, something that allowed me to have many opportunities and has opened up so many doors for me. Being Lebanese, I never had any members of the queer community around me, so I had no one to turn to. But little did I know that there are millions of Queer middle easterners that are simply not talked about. They have been hidden all their lives and too afraid to speak up and be vocal. They were, and some still are, afraid for their lives, as it is still punishable in the Middle East to be a member of the LGBTQI+ community. There is so much beauty, talent, Drag, artistry, creativity, and all things you can imagine in the Middle East that deserve equal representation. I stand here as a proud Lebanese member of my beautiful LGBTQI+ community. I am showing you that, no matter what, we give people and society the power to determine how we should be. I’m working on being a voice for those who don’t have one and I encourage you to do the same. Like I always say: you are loved, beautiful, valuable, important, special and worthy. As I became more involved in the queer community, I started to attend vogue balls. For one event, I was preparing to walk in a category and bought myself a pair of black stiletto heels for the occasion; I’d describe them as “ankle-breakers.” It was the first time I’d ever bought something that I was raised to feel I shouldn’t wear, and it was very emotional for me. Lisa, the young woman who helped me — I’ll never forget her name — was so complimentary; as I told her my story, she was very supportive and made me feel so comfortable. She said that if she had children, she’d allow them to express themselves however they wanted. “I hope my son turns out to be gay,” she enthused.

I came out very late — only a few years ago, right before my 21st birthday. I was always that child who wanted to keep their family together, and I never wanted to draw any attention to myself. My mother, who was a single mum, was my best friend, and her beautiful, put-together style has always influenced me. But I grew up in a rough, masculine household with brothers who were bodybuilders. When I came out, it was dramatic and devastating. My father and brothers disowned me — I haven’t spoken to them since — and my mother stopped speaking to me as well because she felt pressured by the community. I wasn’t the child they wanted me to be; I was a disgrace to them. For the next three years, I was homeless; at one point I only had $50 to my name.

I eventually moved to Los Angeles, where I continued to work as a hairstylist and became part of the celebrity glamour world. This is when I truly started to feel like I was expressing my authentic self with my style. Through my connections there, I was invited to a party hosted by the cosmetics company Nyx, and afterwards I promoted one of its foundations on my Instagram (which at the time didn’t have a ton of followers). A few months later, Nyx regrammed the post and it blew up. It was the most liked and commented on post for the company at that time, and it caused a lot of controversy. Many people commented in loving and supportive ways, while many others expressed hate, saying they were going to boycott the brand because it promoted the idea that what I represent is normal when in their minds it wasn’t. Nyx had to release a statement about it, and I was interviewed by multiple media outlets around the world. From that incident, my following grew massively.

I believe that everything happens for a reason and that your path is always cleared for you to walk. After the Nyx post, I thought I may as well be the voice people want to hear. I’d been searching for someone to identify with my whole life, and I realized that I could be that person for others. I think about all the influences in my life — from the ballroom and voguing scene to Eurovision contestant Conchita Wurst to supermodel Linda Evangelista to performers like Cher, Christina Aguilera and Prince. Prince’s gender had nothing to do with how he dressed; he found himself in a lot of controversy over it, but he never backed down for anyone.

I hear from lots of people around the world who thank me for being the voice they never had. And I think it’s important that we all give thanks to queer people of colour because they made space for us. I also have my mum back in my life. She loves the LGBTQ+ community and goes to Pride every year, but having been raised a certain way, she was never taught how to deal with LGBTQ+ people. Now, she’s an activist, and she talks to parents and the broader community. We always say “When you don’t know better, you don’t do better.” And I always consider these questions: How am I benefiting myself and others and this world? Nothing is more important than making an impact—otherwise, what are we here for?

Baklava (Step by Step Instructions!)

Baklava Recipe

Baklava is one of the best desserts of all time! It’s made with flaky layers of buttered phyllo pastry stuffed with walnuts. Honey syrup is poured over the top so that every bit is deliciously sweet.

It’s a heavenly dessert recipe that is impossible to resist! And not only is it delicious, but it travels well and lasts a long time so you can share it with friends and family.

Where is Baklava From?

There is much debate about the origin of Baklava. Both Greece and Turkey claim to be the originators of the recipe. According to Wiki, the oldest known recipe that resembles baklava came from the Romans. You know that it’s a winning recipe if it’s remained popular for that many centuries!

How to Make Greek Baklava

This is a fairly simple recipe that is made in 4 steps.

  1. The first thing you need to do is gather your ingredients. Phyllo pastry dries out quickly once it’s unwrapped so have everything ready to go before you open the package.
  2. Assembling the baklava is all about layers. Eight layers of phyllo and butter line the bottom of a baking dish. Then comes some walnuts, more phyllo, more butter, more walnuts, and on you go until your ingredients run out.
  3. Now you cut it into diamonds or rectangles then pop it into the oven.
  4. Making the syrup is as easy as mixing some water, sugar, honey, and lemon juice together. Easy! And when you pull the baking dish out of the oven, pour the syrup over the top and let it soak into every nook and cranny.

How long Does Baklava Last?

This dessert will keep for up to 2 weeks at room temperature.

What’s The Best Way To Store It?

To keep this crispy, it is best stored uncovered in a container at room temperature. But if you prefer chewier baklava, then store it in your fridge.

Can I Freeze this Recipe?

Yes! Baklava freezes very well. Make sure that it is cooled completely then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Wrapping it once more in aluminum foil will help prevent any freezer burn.

Baklava Recipe

Phyllo pastry and walnuts are layered together then baked until the pastry is deliciously flaky. A sweet honey syrup is poured over the top which soaks into the baklava and makes every bite heavenly.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces walnuts halves or pieces
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup salted butter
  • 16 ounces phyllo pastry thawed

The Honey Syrup

  • ¾ cup water
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the ingredients

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Place the walnuts and cinnamon in your food processor and pulse until chopped.
  • Melt the butter in a pan or microwave.
  • Cut the phyllo pastry in half so that you have 2 9" wide pieces

Step 2: Assemble the baklava

  • Brush a layer of butter in the bottom of a 9x13” baking dish. Top with 2 sheets of phyllo pastry. Brush lightly with butter then add 2 more sheets of phyllo. Repeat this 2 more times so you have 8 sheets of phyllo pastry in the baking dish.
  • Sprinkle 1/3 of the walnuts into the baking dish. Top with 2 sheets of phyllo. Brush the top of the phyllo with butter then repeat once more so that you have 4 sheets on top of the walnuts.
  • Sprinkle another 1/3 of the walnuts into the baking dish. Top with 2 sheets of phyllo. Brush the top of the phyllo with butter then repeat once more so you have 4 sheets on top of the second layer of walnuts.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 1/3 of the walnuts into the baking dish.
  • Add 2 more sheets of phyllo then brush the top with butter. Continue to add the phyllo and butter layers until you run out of phyllo pastry. Baste the top with any remaining butter.

Step 3: Cut and bake the baklava

  • Cut the baklava into 4 long strips. Then make cuts diagonally so you have diamond-shaped pieces.
  • Place the baking dish into the oven and bake, uncovered, for 25-35 minutes, or until it is puffed and golden on the top.

Step 4: Make the syrup

  • While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. Warm the water and sugar in a small pot over high heat just until the sugar is dissolved. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the honey and lemon juice. Set it aside to cool.
  • When the baklava has finished baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cool syrup over the top. Let it rest for at least two hours before serving.

Notes

Phyllo pastry needs to thaw before you can use it. Let it thaw for at least 1 hour at room temperature or overnight in the fridge.
To keep the baklava crispy, lightly dab the melted butter over the phyllo pastry. Too much butter can make the dessert soggy. Also, make sure that the syrup is cool before you pour it over the hot baklava.

For a pair of leggings or bike shorts to land a top spot in my workout-wardrobe rotation, they need to check a few boxes.
