5 Reasons Why Living in a Beachfront Condo in Pattaya is Good for Your Health

For hundreds of years, ‘going to the beach’ to take the fresh air and bathe in the waters has been recommended as a medical cure by doctors. They firmly believe in the curative powers of sending patients to the seaside, to heal their respiratory organs and reduce the intensity of their disease. This was a particularly common practice in the 1900s when consumption and tuberculosis dogged much of Europe. In truth, the health benefits of the sea have been known for millennia. As far back as 400 BC, the Greek physician Hippocrates (aka the Father of Modern Medicine) was promoting ‘Thalassotherapy’ or sea therapy amongst his patients. Nowadays, this notion of sea therapy is very applicable in a country like Thailand, which attracts hundreds of thousands of retirees and wellbeing seekers every year. So, if you’re wondering whether to purchase an apartment in the hills of Chiang Mai or a beachfront condo in Pattaya, we are here with five health reasons why the latter is a better idea of if you’re after some medicinal wellbeing in your everyday life.

Skin diseases

Seawater is home to many rich minerals, such as chloride, potassium, sodium, sulphur, iodine, magnesium and sodium, many of which have healthy skin benefits. A dip in the ocean, along with UVB radiation exposure, have been shown to lessen the symptoms of certain common skin conditions, like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and eczema.

Respiratory inflammation

In addition to the skin, the sea is known to aid in the relief of the respiratory system. It seems that saline in the air has a soothing effect on the mucosal lining of the lungs and throat. That’s why people with sinusitis, asthma and similar respiratory conditions find breathing the sea air so beneficial.

Mood enhancing

Have you ever noticed that you always feel relaxed after visiting the beach? This is a real phenomenon, not quack science. The reason is that the sea air is charged with negative ions which have positive mood-enhancing properties. These happy ions help lower depression, improve oxygen intake (perfect for yoga and meditation) and increase levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin.

Good for your mind

Likewise, many people swear by the soothing sounds of the waves crashing on the shore to alleviate problems like anxiety, depression and insomnia. Indeed, studies have shown that all nature sounds — birds, forests, waterfalls, waves — help people recover from psychologically stressful events.

Keeps you healthier than others

Believe it or not, just living near the sea will automatically make you healthier. Well, sort of. A recent study suggests that visiting frequently or living close to the sea increases people’s likelihood of being fit and healthy, compared to the general population. Apparently, the reason for this is that people who reside beachside tend to engage in higher levels of physical activity compared to city or countryside dwellers.

We hope this brief article has inspired you to make a beachfront condo in Pattaya your new home. Happy house hunting!

New poetry collection Beekeeper is a window to the soul of author Blake Auden

Following the success of his debut book of poetry, Tell The Bird’s She’s Gone, poet Blake Auden has released his much anticipated second collection, Beekeeper, ahead of National Poetry Day on 1st October.

Featuring 140+ pages of Blake’s signature style across four chapters, Beekeeper is, more than anything else, a book about the author. Touching on topics such as anxiety and mental health, heartbreak, friendship and travel, it has been described as a ‘window to the soul’ of its author, Blake.

Mental health is a major theme throughout the book, in fact it’s probably the single thread that links everything else together.

“I’ve suffered with anxiety for most of my adult life, but it’s been pretty severe at points in the last few years. Writing is one of the ways I deal with that, and I’m extremely open and honest about it in my writing,” explains Blake.

“A lot of my followers are really drawn to this, and I’ve had scores of people tell me it helps them deal with their own mental health issues, particularly in the way it talks about it so honestly. I guess they feel less alone in reading it.”

“In the future I’m hoping I can work with a mental health charity to continue raising awareness around anxiety in particular, and to continue helping to encourage open discussion around the subject.”

Blake’s success with Tell the Birds She’s Gone shows how influential social media platforms can be for indie authors. With over 118,000 followers on Instagram, Blake is excited to see how audiences respond to Beekeeper, and how platforms such as Instagram continues to help cultivate a new, younger, generation of poetry lovers.

Beekeeper is priced at £12.99 and is available to order from www.blakeauden.com.

Exclusive: Fashion Meets Function in Mackage’s Debut Footwear Line

Montreal-based outerwear brand Mackage is expanding its offering this winter, with the launch of its debut line of footwear.

Approaching the design of the footwear in the same way that they approach their coats, co-chief creative officers Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan set out to design a line of shoes that spoke to the brand’s overall mission to “design avant-garde fashion boasting exceptional craftsmanship and performance.”

Photograph courtesy of Mackage.

Speaking with FASHION about the launch (FYI, pre-orders are now officially open), Eran says the ultimate design goal behind the boots “was very simple: we had the same philosophy going into this project and that was that we knew we could contribute to what was in the market.” Elisa agrees, adding, “For us that means that we will not compromise style for warmth and comfort. Just like our outerwear, [the boots are] a finishing touch to your look.”

The marriage of fashion and functionality is music to our ears – and the brand hasn’t skimped on either. Available in four styles, including one unisex boot (more on these in a minute), and three colourways (black, neutral and army green), the boots – all of which are handmade by artisanal shoemakers in Italy – have been specifically engineered to withstand North American winters. A range of statement rubber soles provide excellent grip when you’re walking through the snowy streets of Canada in January, water-repellant finishes mean you’ll never be left with cold, wet feet and shearling lining delivers an additional layer of warmth. And speaking of warmth, the boots are engineered to perform in temperatures down to -25 degrees celsius.

The unisex style in the collection is, fittingly, called the Hero boot. The upper of the shoes has been crafted using the same performance fabrics that feature in Mackage’s outerwear offerings, and the style is available with interchangeable laces so you can customize your look depending on your outfit (the brand notes that the one small difference between the men’s and women’s Hero boot is that the women’s style features an insole with a slight lift). “Our Hero boot to me is the ultimate weekender boot,” says Eran. “It can be worn with a cool hoodie or jeans – a nice casual look with edge.”

Elisa also notes the versatility of all styles in the line-up (the Rebelle boot, for example, can be worn three ways) when it comes to completing a winter wardrobe. “They can be dressed up or down, with a midi dress or a more casual look but you won’t have to compromise on being stylish.” For once, we’re glad winter is coming.

Classic Muddy Buddies (Puppy Chow)

Muddy Buddies are quick and easy, no bake sweet treat that is a combination of cereal, chocolate and peanut butter and tossed in powdered sugar. It’s snack attack perfection! Whether you call it puppy chow or muddy buddies or reindeer chow this is crowd favorite.

I have several great muddy recipes on the site.  Like Vanilla Coconut Muddy Buddies and this Cookies and Cream Muddy Buddies,  but I don’t have the original muddy buddies?  That had to change because these things are just so addicting and make the perfect quick no bake treat.

Classic muddy buddies, is cereal mixed with chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar.

The Best Muddy Buddies

This recipe truly is a classic! This recipe has been around for ages it seems like, it’s known far and wide and it’s the base for so many variations as you can see from my site. This is such a fabulous crowd pleaser. You can take it anywhere for anything,  any party, dessert, special occasion or festivity. It’s always the first to disappear. Extra reasons you’ll love it is because it’s gluten free and you can even use different nut butters for those allergic to peanut butter. (see below)  Everyone can enjoy this crunchy, sweet addicting classic.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate are one of the most loved combinations out there, and mixed with sweet powdered sugar and a hint of vanilla it’s pure bliss. Then the sweet “bliss” is combined with crunchy goodness of cereal, absolute perfection. Hungry yet?!

Chex Mix Muddy Buddy Ingredients:

  • Chex Cereal- the holes in this cereal hold the chocolate peanut butter mixture so every bite guarantees flavor! I like to use either Rice or Corn variety.
  • Chocolate chips– you can either use milk or semi sweet chocolate chips- I prefer semi sweet though.
  • Creamy Peanut butter– avoid using natural peanut butters that make the mixture oily, or too stiff if it’s not mixed up well.
  • Butter- adds creaminess and helps it mix all together
  • Vanilla- add the little bit of extra sweetness
  • Powdered Sugar- perfectly coats the snack with sweetness.

How to Make Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies:

Super simple to throw together you can have this ready to eat in no time.

  1. Cereal- In a large bowl pour the cereal
  2. Microwave- In a medium bowl combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter and microwave 30 seconds at a time till smooth and melted. Stir in vanilla.
  3. Gently- Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal an stir gingerly till fully coated
  4. Shake- In a Gallon ziploc bag scoop the mixture then pour in the powdered sugar. Gently shake and move the bag around till fully coated in sugar.

Steps to making Muddy Buddies with cereal, peanut butter, chocolate and powdered sugar.

Variations for Muddy Buddies:

As you know from my site, I love muddy buddies, it’s so easy to customize. Here are some other ways you can mix this up.

  • Double the Chocolate- replace the powdered sugar with equal amount brownie mix.
  • Add ins: M&Ms, Reese’s Pieces, crushed candy cane, nuts, any variety of chocolate chips can be tossed in to add flavor and texture and color.
  • Sprinkles- Add in any kind of sprinkles to the powdered sugar before mixing it in the bag for pizzazz.
  • Crushed cookies- crush Oreo’s, Nutter butters, or any kind of cookie that you’d like for fun.
  • Peanut Butter Substitutions- Sub out the peanut butter for sun-butter, cashew butter, almond butter, or Nutella.

Classic muddy buddies, is cereal mixed with chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar.

Storing this Easy Snack Mix:

  • Double– Easily double the recipe or half for it for whatever kind of crowd your feeding.
  • For storing: Store in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. The sooner it’s eaten the better.
  • Fridge- Try keeping it in the fridge for extra crunch and that little bit chill is just yummy.
  • Freeze- You can freeze this in an airtight container for up to 3 months, thaw at room temperature

Dove Cameron Opens Up About Her Struggles With Depression & Anxiety: "I Haven’t Been OK For a Long Time"

Trigger Warning: This story discusses depression and anxeity. If you aren't feeling great and you need to talk to someone, remember: you are not alone. There are people just on the other side of the phone waiting to speak to you - just call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or BeyondBlue on 1300 22 4636.

After struggling with depression for over half her life, Dove Cameron isn't one to share away from talking about her mental health. In an effort to be more honest about her feelings Dove shared a photo to Instagram where you can see her emotionally and physically suffering.

"There's something inherently dishonest feeling about photographing sad moments because we are trained to think that its performative, but in an age where we photograph everything, all the time, and only ever show the things that make us look like we are living the ideal life, where does that leave us? What is most honest?" her post began.

In her raw and revealing post, Dove went on to talk about her constant battle not to lose herself to her the depression and anxiety. "I have struggled with depression for more than half my life. My anxiety is unmanageable and never gives me a moment of rest. my trauma runs me and everything I do, and I am in a constant battle to not lose myself to it."

She continued to detail her experience feeling disconnected and like she's only going through the motions of life rather than living it, something commonly experienced by people who struggle with their mental health.

"My self-hatred runs deep. I feel so disconnected from humans and the true parts of myself that most days I am going through the motions of what I know other people want me to be and do and I don't even feel like I'm living a life."

She finishes off the post explain how she's sharing her struggles in the hopes of making those who suffer with "depression, trauma, anxiety, pain, or loneliness" feel less alone and free from judgement.

Kelsey Wells is by far one of our favourite people to follow on Instagram, not only does she share workouts that make us strong and recipes that make us hungry, but she's also all about empowering women.

"Take a moment a send a thank you handwritten or even just a text to someone for something today. Find the time, carve out five minutes and focus on something you're grateful for and let someone know, thank them."

Your body is the biggest blessing. when you can train your mind to think about exercise as a gift to yourself and as a gratitude practice for your body and the way that it sustains you every single day and night your whole life it's a game-changer."

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Truffles

Combine cream cheese with pumpkin and a few amazing ingredients to get a delicious truffle. Creamy melt in your mouth richness with all the flavors of fall, it’s the perfect decadent dessert!

I love the spice that comes from the gingersnaps in this recipe. Ginger is such a great flavor to bake with, try these other ginger rich recipes.  Perfect Gingerbread Cookies, Best Ever Molasses Cookies, or Gingerdoodles.

Cream cheese, pumpkin and gingersnaps combine to make amazing pumpkin truffles.

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Truffles

These Pumpkin Cream Cheese Truffles are the perfect dessert when you want something sweet and full of those sweet fall flavors but you don’t want a whole piece of pie. Pumpkin and cream cheese are a match made in heaven and the richness of these truffles is irresistible.

These are perfect for a quick but impressive dessert and although they take a little time, they are quite simple to make. Rolling the truffles in the white chocolate and waiting for them to set is the hardest part. They are going to be the hit of table, whether it’s at your office party, a family gathering or a festive holiday. They are sure to impress.

White Chocolate Truffle Ingredients:

Combining the flavors of graham crackers and gingersnaps in the truffles adds a little bit of crunch and texture with flavor that will have you coming back for more. Luscious white chocolate is melted to perfection coats the delicate balance of sweetness and spice. We call it a bit of fall Heaven.

  • Gingersnap Cookie: You want to buy ones that are crunchy not soft
  • Graham Cracker: Blend these with the cookies so they’re all the same consistency
  • Cream cheese: You can use low fat cream cheese
  • Confectioners’ Sugar:  Other wise known as powdered sugar
  • Pumpkin Puree: You don’t need a whole can, save the rest in the fridge for another pumpkin recipe
  • Cinnamon: Blends beautifully with the ginger
  • Salt: Helps to balance the sweet
  • White Chocolate Chips: You’ll divide the white chocolate chips to use in two different times. Almond Bark will also work for the coating.

Making Pumpkin Truffles:

  • Crumbs: In a food processor place the cookies and crackers and pulse till fine crumbs. You can also place them in a gallon freezer bag and crush with a heavy rolling pin.
  • Mix: In a large bowl combine the crumbs, cream cheese, sugar, pumpkin puree, cinnamon and salt and beat till smooth.
  • Melt:  Melt 1/2 cup chocolate chips in the microwave in 30 second increments stirring between each one till melted. Watch carefully so you don’t burn it. Add the melted chocolate to the truffle mixture and chill for about 2 hours till solid enough to roll into balls.
  • Form: On a lined baking sheet with parchment paper, roll a heaping teaspoons of the mixture into balls. Melt the remaining chocolate and drop the balls in the chocolate using a spoon to coat.  Place the truffle on the parchment paper and garnish with extra crumbs if desired.
  • Chill:  Refrigerate the truffles for at least 30 min or till chocolate has set. Refrigerate any leftovers.

Making pumpkin cream cheese truffles with gingersnaps and graham crackers.

Why this Truffle Works and Tips:

  • Gingersnaps and Graham Crackers: Truffles need a soft mold-able center so you can roll them into that iconic truffle shape. The gingersnap and graham cracker crumbs provide the stability and intense added flavor to the pumpkin mixture. Pumpkin puree is borderline runny. Combined with the cream cheese and white chocolate you have a perfectly soft delicate flavored middle.
  • Crumb Tip: The finer the crumb the easier the filling will be to shape and roll and mix together.
  • White Chocolate: White chocolate chips are made to hold their shape when melted so it can be tricky to get it the right consistency. That’s why you want to melt it in increments, and stirring often to help break it down and not burn it. Using the White chocolate chips in the batter will help it hold it’s shape when it cools.
  • White Chocolate Tip: If you have trouble melting the chocolate to the right consistency for the outer coating, use the almond bark or a high quality white chocolate that will melt easier.
  • Melting:  Moisture is the enemy of melting chocolate. Be careful not let water get into your chocolate especially if you use a double boiler to melt it.

Variations of Pumpkin Truffles:

  • Chocolate: Try using dark, semi-sweet or milk chocolate for your outside coating.
  • Garnish: Sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice or course salt for a different flavor.
  • Filling: Add in finely chopped walnuts or pecans for a little extra crunch.
  • Substitute: You can substitute pumpkin pie spice for the cinnamon or add nutmeg with the cinnamon for a bit for zing.

10 Effective Calisthenics Workout for Beginners

Not all exercises that target the big muscle group involve spending time in the gym while working out using sophisticated equipment. If you prefer a simple yet effective way of strengthening the muscles on your chest or your hamstrings, try calisthenics.

These exercises use bodyweight for resistance and include running, jumping, skipping rope, pulling, and pushing that are just some of the calisthenics exercises that any beginner can do.

Here are 10 effective calisthenics workouts for beginners that you must try.

1. Jump Squat

As the name implies, this calisthenics exercise is a combination of a squat and a jump. First, stand with your feet parallel to each other and slightly apart with the toes pointing to the outside direction.

Make sure that your feet align with your shoulders. Keeping your chest upright and your head and face facing forward, execute a deep squat.

Then, pop yourself up in a jump. Do this 25 times. Remember to keep your knees in line with your toes when squatting to prevent knee joint injury.

2. Chin-ups

You need an calisthenics for this routine. Stand facing the exercise bar. Grasp the bar from below using both hands. Pull your body upward until your chin is higher than the bar. Repeat this 10 times.

3. Dips

You can use a dip bar, an exercise ball, or a bench for this exercise. Using your hands and feet, lift yourself off the ground. Use your triceps muscles or the muscles in your arms to move your body up and down. Repeat 20 times.

4. Pull-ups

To perform this calisthenics exercise, you need an exercise bar. Grasp it from above with your hands not more than shoulder-length apart.

Pull your body up until your head is over the bar. This is a great workout for the muscles on your shoulders. Repeat 10 times.

5. Crunches

Crunches target the core muscles of the body. To perform a crunch, lie with your back flat on the floor. Bend the knees into a 90-degree angle and the feet flat on the floor.

With your hands crossed beneath your head, pull yourself up using the core muscles. Sit up and try to touch your knees with your chest or elbows. Repeat 50 times.

6. Pushups

Start this calisthenics exercises by taking the plank position. This is executed by getting on your knees and placing your head underneath.

Make sure that your body is aligned from head to foot. Raise your body up and make sure to keep your back straight. Then, move your body downward until your chest almost meets the floor.

Pause for a short time and raise your body again. Keep your core tight as you perform this exercise. Repeat 20 times.

7. Jump Rope

Hold the rope with both hands. The distance of your hands from the centre of your body must be the same. When rotating the rope, use your wrists, not your elbows.

Jump off the ground while rotating the rope and make sure to clear it. When you jump, your toes must be pointed downward and your knees slightly bent. Do this for 30 seconds.

8. Jumping Jack

To do this exercise, start by standing with your feet together and your hands at your sides. Then, jump to the air while parting your feet and raising your hands over your head.

You can clap your hands if you want. Jump again and close your feet and bring your hands to the sides. Repeat 30 to 50 times.

9. Front and Back Lunge

This workout conditions the muscles in the thighs and butt. Start by standing straight with your feet apart. Step forward with your left foot and bend your right knee to make a lunge.

Return to the original position. Move your right foot backward and make a lunge by bending your left knee. Continue alternating the lunges.

10. Bicycle Crunches

When doing this exercise, you tighten your abs. Start by lying down flat on your back with your head aligned with your feet. Place your hands beneath your head.

Your elbows must be pointing outward. Move a leg up and at the same time bending your knees. Crunch your abs as you raise your head so that it touches the bent knees.

Do this with the right and left leg alternately. Raise your legs and bend your knees. Repeat 30 to 50 times.

Keep your big muscle group in top condition without visiting the gym. Perform these calisthenics exercises every day to keep your body fit.
