Why is PCOS misunderstood?

My name’s Bethan, I’m 36, I live near Nottingham and work in retail design. I love a cocktail, and good food, reading, film and rabbits. I have red hair and a feisty temperament to match! I am so lucky to be called mum by my gorgeous, very independent four-year-old girl and partner to an amazing man and… I have PCOS.

PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a hormonal and metabolic disorder causing several debilitating symptoms that women experience in varying degrees, depending on the type of PCOS they have and how severe their condition is. Symptoms such as: irregular or absent periods, ovarian cysts, insulin resistance, obesity, chronic low-level inflammation, hormone imbalance, fertility issues, thyroid dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, blood sugar issues, male pattern hair growth and loss, sleep apnea, pelvic pain and more. Left unchecked, PCOS can cause several serious conditions such as: type 2 diabetes, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, cardiovascular disease, infertility, and endometrial cancer.

Despite this, and the fact that it can affect around 15-20% of women, PCOS isn’t prioritised by the medical community, and with little research funding, women are often left feeling dismissed and unsupported because they don’t fit a formula, or like their issues are in their heads, or that their efforts to heal themselves aren’t good enough. There’s a lot of judgement and shame around it too – those with lean PCOS aren’t taken seriously because they don’t seemingly have a weight issue, those with weight problems (like myself) are simply told that the symptoms will lessen with weight loss – without addressing the fact that it’s almost impossible to lose weight with PCOS if you don’t support the underlying hormonal imbalance. And for lean women who don’t need to lose weight, their symptoms are completely disregarded. All this only contributes to the problem and can then cause further anxiety, stress, depression and eating disorders.

When diagnosed, many women are simply told that they may find it hard to conceive, without any additional information given to support the condition, this was also my experience. If you’re trying to conceive and have difficulty, fertility treatment will be offered, but if you’re not trying to conceive, there’s limited medical support. With this response, the other unbearable symptoms that women with PCOS experience are dismissed, and without identifying and supporting the hormonal imbalance at the heart of the disorder, no amount of effort on the individual’s part will make any difference. Again, this was my experience.

After a long history of worsening symptoms, (exacerbated by pregnancy) and from reaching breaking point with my weight-gain, frustrated that no amount or type of exercise I tried, or fewer calories I ate, made any difference – I decided to sack off the doctors and take control of my health myself.

Researching PCOS

So, after a LOT of research, this year I adopted a holistic and largely naturopathic approach to healing. I made significant changes to my diet and lifestyle, focussed on reducing inflammation and stress in my body and took supplements to support my symptoms. I joined a 90-day, online fitness plan with a coach who tailored my exercise regime and meal-plan to my goals and needs. He listened to all my research and adapted my plan each time we learnt something new. We ended up reducing my carbs and increasing my healthy fats and made my workouts less intense, so they didn’t cause a stress response. At the end of the 90-days I had lost 12 lbs, which was huge to me because whatever I’d tried in the past would plateau at 5 lbs and then I’d lose no more, get frustrated, give up and pile it back on again and more.

Through my continued research, I found some specialist doctors who had PCOS themselves and by taking a holistic and naturopathic approach had managed to completely reverse their PCOS diagnosis. By following their lead, I have been able to lose almost 2 stone in weight, reduce many of my PCOS symptoms, including lower androgens, fewer migraines, less stress and anxiety, better overall mood, less inflammation, aches and pains and regulated my periods into a 30-day cycle for the first time in my life! I can’t tell you how happy I am!

Due to the added complication of insulin resistance with my type of PCOS, I discovered that a low carb / high fat diet might be beneficial, so I’ve recently given vegan keto a try and am so far enjoying the progress in terms of weight-loss, although it isn’t something I plan to do long-term.

To help regulate my blood sugar I’m also intermittent fasting each day on a 16:8 pattern, so, not eating after 8pm until 12 noon the next day. I find this works well for me and I’m not hungry in the fasting periods.

At the time of writing, I’m really pleased with my success to date and have decided to share my story and track my ongoing journey to healing on my Instagram blog @healing_pcos_mama. I still have a way to go and hope to continue reducing my symptoms and eventually to reverse my diagnosis. I want to be a positive voice and example on the subject of PCOS as there are so few positive stories out there. I hope that my experience provides inspiration to other women suffering with PCOS and helps them to feel empowered to educate themselves to heal from their own PCOS symptoms.

It’s hard but it’s not impossible and if I can do it, anyone can xx

Earlier this month, Avène, a beloved French skincare brand for sensitive, intolerant and allergic skin, released a limited-edition can of its cult-favourite hydrating mist, Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray ($22), to mark the brand’s 30th anniversary. Although Avène’s roots began with mineral-rich spring water found in a small village in Southern France more than a century ago, the brand was officially established in 1990 and has kept on expanding into the skincare game ever since. What’s more, for every limited-edition hydrating mist sold, Avène will donate $1 to the Canadian Cancer Society. Be sure to pick yours up at a drugstore near you.

How to Make Perfect Instant Pot Rice

Instant pot rice is perfectly fluffy, light, tender and never sticky.  When you use your Instant pot it’s perfect EVERY SINGLE TIME! Even your tricky hard to master brown and wild rice will be perfect. It’s so easy you’ll never use a pot on the stove again.

Use your instant pot to make perfect rice for meals that are served over rice, like stir fry. Try these favorites Amazing Pepper Steak Stir Fry, Honey Garlic Chicken Stir Fry or Cashew Chicken Stir Fry.

Perfect fluffy light tender Instant pot rice.

Perfect Rice

There’s nothing worse than wanting light fluffy rice and getting sticky, mushy, watery or crunchy hard rice instead. If you are making a Risotto or a Rice Pudding then you can skip rinsing and even skip the instant pot method because you’ll want a creamy texture that will be hard to get with an instant pot. This method is just too perfect for that light individual feather like rice.

Easy White Rice Ingredients:

  • Rice: Long grain
  • Water: If you want to add flavor you can use chicken, beef, or veggie broth.
  • Butter: Adds richness but you can also leave it out.
  • Salt: Just a pinch to add flavor

How to Make White Rice:

So simple you’ll memorize this easily.

  • Rinse: Use a fine mesh strainer to thoroughly rinse the rice. I often use my hand to move the rice around and make sure it all gets rinsed.
  • Cook: Combine rice, water, butter and salt in Instant pot. Lock the lid and secure the vent and cook on high for 5 minutes
  • Release: Let the pressure release naturally. Carefully remove the lid and fluff with a fork.

Rinsing Rice before cooking.

Why You Need to Rinse Rice:

  • Starch: Rinsing your rice before cooking will help get rid of the extra starch which is found on Rice. This extra starch when cooked causes the rice to become sticky and gloopy. Rinsing will take off that extra starch and insure nice fluffy individual grains of rice.
  • Impurities: No method of preparing rice for the store shelf is perfect. Rinsing your rice will also help get rid of any impurities, such as dirt, left over pesticides and help sanitize your rice making for a healthy meal.

Rinsing and preparing the perfect rice in the Instant Pot.

Why the Instant Pot is Best for Fluffy Rice:

  • Consistent:  Cooking rice on the stove top can vary so much that it’s hard to get consistent results every time. Depending on how your lid fits, the size of the pot and your heating element you make never get the same result twice.
  • Steady Results: The instant pot is consistent because there is no water lost through evaporation. The heat source is always consistent and the time and setting is the time every time.
  • Natural release: When the rice is done cooking, leave the rice undisturbed and the pressure will naturally begin to release. After about 15 minutes you can manually release the remaining pressure before opening it.

Using and setting the Instant Pot for the perfect rice.

Brown Rice Ingredients:

  • Brown Rice: Long grain cooks nicely and can be used for anything.
  • Water: Try using a  broth for extra flavor boost
  • Butter: Adds buttery flavor, but can leave out.
  • Salt: Just a pinch will do it

Making Brown Rice in the Instant pot:

  • Rinse: Use a fine mesh strainer to thoroughly rinse the rice. I often use my hand to move the rice around and make sure it all gets rinsed.
  • Cook: Combine rice, water, butter and salt in Instant pot. Lock the lid and secure the vent and cook on high for 10 minutes
  • Release: Let the pressure release naturally. Carefully remove the lid and fluff with a fork.

Brown Rice Perfectly cooked in an Instant Pot

Wild Rice Ingredients:

  • Wild Rice: There are many varieties of wild rice. Experiment with all of them to find a favorite.
  • Water: Notice there is more water than rice for wild rice.
  • Butter: Can be omitted.
  • Salt: Helps to bring out the flavor of the wild rice.

Mastering Wild Rice in the Instant Pot:

  • Rinse: Use a fine mesh strainer to thoroughly rinse the rice. I often use my hand to move the rice around and make sure it all gets rinsed.
  • Cook: Combine rice, water, butter and salt in Instant pot. Lock the lid and secure the vent and cook on high for 15 minutes.
  • Release: Let the pressure release naturally. Carefully remove the lid and fluff with a fork.

What to Expect from Radiation Therapy for Cancer Treatment?

Radiation therapy is used to kill cancer cells through radiation. It can be used in the early stages or the later stages after spreading to various body parts. The doctors, after a thorough examination, would suggest the best one for you.

The procedures vary from persons to persons and different types of cancers. It might take several therapy sessions for you to get it done. You can read more here to know about the treatment process and its effects. You can’t predict the effects of radiotherapy, but you can expect a few things from the treatment, which are:

Goals of Radiation Therapy

Radiation treatments are usually given for five days a week for six to seven weeks. It can be used to cure cancer, make other treatments more effective such as chemotherapy, stop cancer from coming back, treat cancer if it has returned, and relieve symptoms if the cure is impossible.

Types of Radiation Therapy

There are two forms of radiation therapy – external beam and internal beam radiation therapy. External beam radiation therapy involves a special machine that emits a beam to a target area. It can also target deep within the body. Internal radiation therapy involves implants or introduces a radioactive substance into the body.

The source of radiation in this procedure is placed inside the body near the cancer cells. It can also involve drinking or injecting radioactive liquid into the body. Scientists have tried to develop treatment techniques so that one can receive effective outcomes with minimal health risk. You can read more here to get detailed information about the various types of radiation therapy and how they are administered.

How is Radiation Therapy Performed

Radiation breaks the DNA of cancer cells to disrupt their growth and function. This prevents and slows down the speed of cancerous cells in the body. The first appointment won’t include any actual therapy but a CT scan to help map and locate the treatment areas and plan your radiation therapy.

After that, the doctor would decide the right type of dosage and radiation. You may get radiation therapy before surgery to reduce the growing tumour size or after surgery to remove the remaining cancer cells present in your body.

Side Effects

The type of treatment you receive, the location of your cancer, and your health determine the side effects of radiotherapy. Radiation can damage the healthy cells along with the cancerous cells. Side effects can be short-term and long-term and may include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, diarrhoea, etc.

Long-term side effects can include heart or lung problems, thyroid problems, hormonal changes, etc. Internal beam radiation might give you some soreness or tenderness, or you may experience fatigue.

External beam radiation might give you some changes in the skin and fatigue. In most cases, patients do not face any side effects at all in the initial treatment stages. Side effects may come up after several treatments.

It is quite normal to worry or get overwhelmed while thinking of undergoing radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is the most effective treatment for cancer after surgery. You will be taken care of by a trained medical team and healthcare professionals to give you the best possible experience. Finally, it is also necessary to follow special precautions at home when you are undergoing the treatment.

5 Things to Know about Disposable Aprons and Gowns

Healthcare professionals are at the most significant risk of contracting an infection and therefore require adequate PPE (Personal Protective Gear) to protect them from the infection and prevent cross-contamination.

Gloves, aprons, and gowns are essential protective gear that must be worn by all healthcare workers when performing a procedure or surgery. However, keep some important points in mind, or they may increase the risk. You can click here for more information.

PPE – Not a Substitute for Hygiene

Please be aware the PPE is no substitute for hygiene. Please ensure proper hand hygiene before putting on and removing PPE. Ensure you wash your hands with soap and sanitiser before and after using any of the PPE gear. Most importantly, buy only HACCP-certified gowns and aprons that come with waist ties, neckties, dispenser boxes, and waterproof materials.

Single-Use and Fast Disposal

Disposable gowns and aprons are for single-use only and should not be washed for reuse. They should be disposed of immediately after removal.

Safe Material

Gowns are made of liquid-proof poly-coated material. It has long sleeves with cuffs and an adjustable neckline with neck binding ties. Cover gowns, on the other hand, are meant to cover the entire body and are made of fluid-resistant, non-woven polypropylene material.

Isolation gowns are meant to provide high protection to wearers and patients with highly contagious infections. These are made of single-ply polypropylene material with no stitches. They have glued seams to prevent the passage of fluid or bacteria.

Aprons, too, are made of poly-coated material and are generally worn over other protective apparels for added hygiene and protection because of exposure to various hazards in the hospital. Plastic aprons are used in different areas like operation theatre, patient wards, isolation wards, and ICU.

Use of Disposable Aprons

Disposable, single-use plastic aprons are recommended for general clinical use when coming in contact with patients, material, or equipment, leading to contamination of uniform and other clothing with microorganisms.

Aprons are also to be worn when coming in contact with blood, bodily fluids, or chemicals. If there is a risk of an excessive splashing of blood or bodily fluids, full-body gowns may be recommended.

Removing the Aprons

When removing the apron, roll it downwards from the chest with the outer surface going in to avoid touching the contaminated outer surface with hands. Remember to dispose of it in a hazardous waste bin only.

Disposable aprons and plastic gowns are made of Polypropylene and Polyethylene fabrics, which are comfortable and skin-friendly to be worn throughout the day and for long hours. The fabric is durable, comfortable, and tear-resistant. They are readily available online at reasonable rates. For more details, you can click here.

To conclude, while PPE or any protective gear is meant to protect the wearer and others from contracting infections, it is only effective if used, worn, and disposed of correctly. You must keep the above-mentioned points in mind while buying and using PPE.

Getting it wrong at any stage will simply defeat the whole purpose and contaminate the surface or body, leading to infections.
