Amazon Australia Black Friday 2020: What’s in Store

The Christmas shopping season is just about to start. And if you still have no idea what gifts to get for your family and friends, then worry no more. With Amazon Australia’s Black Friday 2020 set this coming 27 November, there is more than enough deals to complete any gift list. You might even score some nifty fitness gear and wearables for yourself! Read on to learn more about this much-awaited deals bonanza.

What is Black Friday 2020?

Black Friday is a big sales event for shoppers to buy items for less, mainly for Christmas gifts. During this time, offline and online retailers offer a wide range of products with massive discounts, up to 70% off. This year, Black Friday falls on 27 November 2020, and the sale period will run until 30 November for the Cyber Monday sale.

The Black Friday sale happens annually every last Friday of November, right after Thanksgiving Day in the United States. However, for Amazon, great offers are already up for grabs at least two days prior. And that means almost an entire week’s worth of huge discounts and more happy shopping for us!

Is It a Big Sales Event in Australia?

The Black Friday event started as an American tradition that global retailers eventually embraced. In Australia, Black Friday has slowly gained momentum for the past years since it began in the country. Amazon Australia, for instance, stated that Black Friday 2019 was its biggest shopping day ever. And this news only goes to show that Aussie shoppers are just as keen when it comes to bargain hunting.

Amazon Australia shared further that the event gave them their much-needed online foot traffic. And with social distancing and health protocols still in place to this day, there’s a high chance that shoppers will prefer online shopping over retail stores for Black Friday 2020. With fingers crossed, we expect far more exciting online offers this year, too!

What Are the Deals to Expect?

Black Friday 2020 is still a few days away, and knowing Amazon, the retail giant won’t be revealing its major offers until much later. However, based on previous years, our safe bets include:

  • Amazon devices. Amazon regularly offers discounts on its smart home devices, so we’re looking forward to more bargain prices for Black Friday 2020. Last year, Echo Dot, Echo Show 5, Kindle Paperwhite and Fire TV Stick were among the in-demand Amazon-branded products.
  • Laptops and consoles. Savvy shoppers would typically wait for big sales to score massive discounts on consumer electronics like computers and gaming products. Prominent brands like Apple, Dell and HP are likely to offer great deals on Amazon as well as in their websites.
  • Smart TVs and soundbars. If you’re planning to upgrade your home entertainment system, Black Friday is the perfect time to do so. Multiple brands for TVs and smart speakers are sure to join this event with massive price drops.

For the fitness enthusiasts, Black Friday is likely to have so much in store for you, too. Noise-cancelling headphones, shoes, activewear, supplements and wearables like smartwatches are some items to keep an eye on. We’ll be making a list of updated Amazon deals in another post. Does Cyber Monday Offer Better Deals?

When this sale event started, Black Friday is more on physical stores, whereas Cyber Monday sale is all about online shopping, hence the name. Currently, there’s no significant difference between the two, and items on sale during both times are available in brick-and-mortar and online stores.

However, some foreign and Australian retailers prefer to hold their best deals until the last day of the event. It’s up to you to wait for better discounts, but there’s always a risk for popular products to sell out fast.

I suggest buying the items you want right then and there, while stocks are still available. Black Friday in Australia is the biggest sale event of the year, and you probably won’t enjoy huge savings, particularly on expensive items, other than this time.

Dry Martini: Run a Fast Mile

Every few years, it appears that I need to relearn the “you never know what you can do until you try” lesson. This may be the one true constant in my life. Well, that and never being able to pluck every last chin hair. 

The last two times I really pushed myself was training for and finishing the New York City marathon in 2016, then setting a half-marathon PR at Wineglass in 2018. Ever since I checked "sheer endurance" and "speed+endurance" off of my Can I Do It list, my only real goal has been to run 13.1 miles in every state in the U.S. 

While I remain totally on-board with that scheme — only 38 states left! — the pandemic is harshing that buzz. My coach floated the idea of using this time to focus on mile time trial. To which I said: sure. Why not?

Given how we've all been safer at home for quite some time now, my neighbors have really upped their sidewalk art game.

Initially, the plan was to built up some speed and run it in September. But with dropping my oldest off at college and other life stuff, my enthusiasm and mental capacity for intervals and strides was non-existent. Fortunately, by the end of the month, my get-up-and-go was back.

I spent most of October mixing speed-work into my running routine and hit the track on Mondays. And while the paces were hard, they weren’t so hard as to be demoralizing. I can run a 9:30 lap or two but it takes a good mantra that I borrowed from Oiselle (Head Up, Wings Out) to remind me to pick up my cadence rather than rely on a longer stride. 

It also takes a lot of Beyonce. 

After four weeks of light, fast feet, the morning of my fast mile came. With it came high wind warnings, blowing snow, and an achy hip. Late October in these parts can be fickle and my body continues to age. This is another lesson I need to keep learning.

Rather than stop thinking about all of it and just go, I started to bargain. I could wait and do it tomorrow, when weather conditions would be even worse. Or I could put it off until the afternoon, which would really just give myself more time to find better excuses. Another option was to just run easy, you know, because of the weather and the hip and the wind. 

Or I could just suck it up and do the thing, just like I’d done for all of my speedier runs, each one of which I tried to talk myself out of and each one of which I conquered. So I dug out my gloves and went.

Just before I put the pedal to the metal.

My warm-up was the three-quarters-of-a-mile to the high school track. I took one lap of the track — roughly a quarter mile — to do some high knees and strides. All of my aches left the building once I was warmed up. Then I took a deep breath, blinked some snowflakes out of my eyes, and hit the lap button. 

I started my first lap way too fast. While I can run a 9:15 pace, I can’t actually sustain it for more than 400 meters. I held a few of my horses and shot for a 10:30-10:45 pace, which seemed to be about what I could do this day.

That’s where I stayed for laps two and three. They were hard, mind, but I wasn’t dying. Plus, Lizzo had my back.

When I started lap four, I picked it up a little. For the last 200 meters, I ran as fast as I could, which at that point wasn’t super fast but just a itty-bit faster than before. 

I looked at my Garmin after it beeped: 10:21. This, my friends, is the fastest I have ever run a mile. And I did it despite the wind and the snow and the hip. I did it even though I didn’t think I could.

So maybe this is the time for you, too, to find a way to surprise yourself by trying something that is just outside of your comfort zone. Make it hard, but not impossible. And don’t let yourself be distracted by all of your own excuses.

Fashion Entrepreneur Inder Bedi Launches New Sustainability-Focused Brand, 457 Anew

Inder Bedi, founder of vegan accessory label Matt & Nat, has returned to the fashion space with a new vision based in part around things that are old. Upon leaving the brand he founded 25 years ago, Bedi says many people urged him to focus on the types of product he was known for introducing to the mainstream market – items that used vegan leather fabrications and had a decidedly contemporary feel. Instead, he came to the conclusion that he wanted to conceive of a line that would focus on a more holistic approach to ethical fashion from start to finish. Enter 457 Anew, Bedi’s Montreal-based venture that offers elevated everyday wares including bags, knits and outerwear crafted from textiles like Econyl (fabricated from nylon waste such as fishing nets), scrapped seatbelts from the automotive and aviation industries, and Desserto’s innovative leather made from cactus leaves.

“I thought, how can we produce products that will last a very long time in terms of the durability and the aesthetic, and where can I focus in terms of reusing materials that, if we don’t use them, will end up in a landfill,” says Bedi of the assortment of goods, which in addition to being available on the brand’s website have also found an exclusive home with Canadian retail icon, Simons.

The name 457 Anew riffs off the not only the idea of making something old new again, but also on a trio of numbers that have great significance to Bedi. “As I was researching the whole concept and looking for landfill materials and local producers – some of whom have been around for decades – this number just kept appearing,” he recalls. “Invoice numbers, an address I was going to….” Bedi says that he grew up around numerology thanks to his Hindu mother, and was intrigued to discover that when combined, the numbers “defined a spiritual path.” The numbers also represent the years that his children were born–2004, 2005, 2007. “They’re definitely a big part of my inspiration,” he adds about his new forward-looking endeavour.

As well as focusing on materials both novel and disused, Bedi says that an integral component to founding 457 Anew centered around local production. “Not a lot of people know this, but when I started Matt & Nat, I had a small factory in Montreal and we produced everything locally for the first six or seven years,” he notes.

As the brand grew, though, production was taken overseas. And after departing from that first foray into the fashion business, Bedi could look back on what wants and needs were integral to starting something different. “Let’s work with people who are artisans, who are tailors, who are sewers, to make sure that passion comes through in the product,” he notes of the craftspeople involved in bringing the 457 Anew line to life.

Bedi adds that there was a “fair amount of research involved to align myself with people who could do the type of work that was needed” – he was actually visiting scrapyards himself while in the ideation process to collect potential materials for use. And there was also a lot of trial-and-error in devising how to best use these upcycled components. “Figuring out how to properly stitch a seatbelt – this might sound ridiculous, but it took months,” he says. “[They’re] made to save people’s lives, so they’re tough.”

Given the nature of the materials being used in 457 Anew’s pieces, whether discarded or bio-fabricated, one has to wonder where Bedi sees the brand going; that is, how can building a sustainably-focused brand be scaled in a way that as many consumers who want to invest in such products can? But in talking to him, it’s clear that staying in the sphere of small-batch manufacturing actually speaks to not only his brand’s philosophy, but also where he hopes to see the fashion industry as a whole headed as well.

Highlighting that the current WFH circumstances of many people has shed light on just how much we were consuming needlessly before, Bedi says that part of the ethos of 457 Anew is about “getting [consumers] into a mindset that we don’t need so many coats, bags, knits. We just need the ones that speak to us. [It’s about] trying to get people to have that perspective.”

The brand’s timeless, minimalist vibe certainly speaks to this concept, and so does its partnership with the Montreal’s homeless and at-risk youth organization, Dans La Rue. 457 Anew’s ‘Last Beyond You’ program is set up to provide Dans La Rue with upcycled wares created from previously used pieces that consumers return after a certain timeline (and they’ll also receive a 25 per cent credit towards a new 457 Anew purchase).

Bedi says that he knows a start-up label such as his has the luxury of implementing such vanguard measures, from this give-back angle to the materials that goes into his products. But above anything else, his hopefulness that these actions will spur on more change, particularly within existing fashion brands, is palpable. And a hopeful attitude is not only key to building a business, but also for the sustenance of humanity as well.

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Opt For Black Coat Dresses to Mark Remembrance Sunday

Though on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean right now, sisters-in-law Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle both opted for a similar aesthetic to mark Remembrance Sunday over the weekend.

In London, the Duchess of Cambridge joined mother-in-law Camila, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Queen for the National Service of Remembrance at The Cenotaph in London. Camila and Kate stood on the same balcony (six feet apart) overlooking the monument which honours those who lost their lives in World War I and World War II. To mark the occasion, Kate wore a custom black Alexander McQueen coat with tassel details on the shoulders and adorned with three red poppies, paired with a Philip Treacy hat and diamond and pearl earrings reportedly borrowed from the Queen.

In Los Angeles, Meghan and Harry paid a visit to the Los Angeles National Cemetery where they laid flowers picked from their garden at the resting place of two Commonwealth soldiers – one who had served in the Royal Australian Air Force and another in the Royal Canadian Artillery. They also laid a wreath in front of an obelisk with the inscription: “In Memory of the Men Who Offered Their Lives in Defense of Their Country.” Harry wrote a personal message on the wreath which said, “To all of those who have served, and are serving. Thank you.” Meghan chose a black belted midi coat-dress from Brandon Maxwell for the outing, teamed with a single red poppy and heels by Jennifer Chamandi.

According a spokesperson, the pair wanted to be able to recognize Remembrance Day “in their own way.” It is a day that is particularly meaningful to Prince Harry who served in the armed forces for 10 years, including two tours of Afghanistan. The pair’s visit coincided with the release of a new episode of military podcast Declassified which featured Prince Harry. Speaking of Remembrance Day, the Duke of Sussex said, “Remembrance Day for me is a moment for respect and for hope. Respect for those who came before us and hope for a safer world. The act of remembering, of remembrance, is a profound act of honour. It’s how we preserve the legacies of entire generations and show our gratitude for the sacrifices they made in order for us to be able to live the lives we live today.”

Here’s Why Treadmill Running Should Be Your Go-To This Winter

With gyms closed across most of Canada and temperatures dipping as we head into winter, at-home workouts are pretty much our only shot at breaking a sweat. Here to help with people’s indoor fitness routines is Peloton Tread, the fitness company’s new treadmill, which is launching in Canada in a few months on February 9.

The treadmill features a 23.8” HD touchscreen with integrated speakers and is designed to fit comfortably in most homes, thanks to a sleek design and dimensions that are smaller than most couches. Like the Peloton Bike and App, the Tread offers access to live and on-demand classes to help motivate and elevate your workouts.

While outdoor running provides many benefits, such as fresh air and a varied route, according to experts treadmill running offers the same cardio benefits for heart health. However, there are certain things to keep in mind. In order to burn as many calories on the treadmill as one would outdoors, the treadmill should be set at a 1 percent incline, according to research published in the Journal of Sports Sciences.

“Oftentimes, people forget to add resistance (incline) to their treadmill,” Becs Gentry, a Peloton Tread Instructor, tells FASHION. “This is essential to mimic the air resistance we experience running outside and without it, it can lead people to think that running inside is “easier.” Running outside of your capability is also easier to do on the treadmill as the inclination to run fast is right in front of you and the moving belt seems to assist in the ability to do so. Running faster than you are truly capable of for extended periods of time, 20 seconds or more, is in fact dangerous and can exacerbate lower back and hamstring injuries. You should never allow the treadmill belt to “pull” your legs underneath you as you run, and instead, you should always be in control of your running form.”

For beginners who might be new to running, or specifically to running on a treadmill, Gentry offers a few tips:

“Be humble and remember that with patience comes progress. You have to repeat workouts a few times a week, over a 3-4 week period to start to see or feel changes in yourself. Peloton’s Walk + Run content is a fabulous class format to segue into running for longer durations than you may have done before and they are a great reminder of efficient running form throughout.”

One common criticism of running on a treadmill vs outdoors is the pressure it can put on the knees. To avoid any injuries, says Gentry, “it’s important to run with correct form and within your limits, take time to rest and recover, and include strength training and stretching into your routine. All of these combined show that running can actually strengthen bones, including the knees. Also, ensuring you are wearing trainers which have been designed for running in is a big element people forget to address.”

Gentry recommends supplementing treadmill running with strength and core exercises, and insists that runners spend a few minutes warming up and cooling down before and after workouts. “Revving your engine up before your workout and getting it to come back to its happy place after will benefit longevity of training.”

How PHYTO Paris Used The Power of Plants to Revolutionize the Haircare Industry

Primum non nocere. The Latin phrase, , which means “first, do no harm,” has always been at the heart of botanical haircare brand, PHYTO Paris. Founded in 1969 by Patrick Alès, one of the most famous and sought-after hairdressers at that time, the brand has always prioritized caring for hair in a holistic way. “The inspiration behind PHYTO was how to respect hair in its natural form, rather than trying to change it,” says PHYTO trainer and national expert, Elisabeth Gagnon.

To do this, Alès created the concept of Phytotherathrie, which translates to “haircare by plants”. While working in his salon, “he quickly noticed his assistants, who were doing the shampooing for clients, had developed dry, cracked hands,” says Gagnon. “Alès could not allow this, so he created a hand cream for them — a blend of seven plants,” including rosemary leaf extract, calendula flower extract and willow leaf extract. One day, he began using the cream in clients’ hair and noticed a major difference in hydration and protection against everyday aggressors, says Gagnon. This “Aha! Moment” planted the seeds for PHYTO Paris, which would officially launch two years later. From that point on, Alès sought out to create products that utilized the power of plants to nourish the hair and scalp, while providing the efficacy and style that consumers wanted.

More than 50 years later, PHYTO’s philosophy remains the same. In fact, the original cream (now called the PHYTO 7 Moisturizing Day Cream) is still a core part of the brand’s range of revolutionary product offerings, which includes PHYTOCOLOR, the first permanent hair colour made of five botanical pigments that are extracted from wood, flowers and shrubs, and PHYTOPOLLÉINE, the first-ever stimulating scalp treatment made with a blend of essential oils (such as rosemary, lemon, cypress and sage) to help balance the scalp, as well as treat and manage an itchy scalp or sebum issues. “A lot of people don’t know that many hair innovations were discovered by PHYTO,” says Gagnon. “Day cream for your hair, pre-shampoo scalp treatment, supplements — PHYTO did all of that first, thanks to Patrick Alès’ curiosity. He wanted to be avant-garde and think outside the box.” To this day, plants are still the way forward for PHYTO Paris’ haircare innovations.

There are so many ways to incorporate sweet potatoes into your meal besides Sweet Potato Fries. You can make Maple Sweet Potato Pancakes for breakfast, Sweet Potato Cake for dessert, or Sweet Potato Rolls to pair with soup.

Homemade Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet potato pie is a traditional Southern dessert, and usually served during the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. But between you and me, I will gladly eat this pie all year round. It is creamy with a cheesecake like quality and decadence. The filling is spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger for that holiday vibe. And let’s not forget about the buttery pie crust that encases this creamy filling.

For this particular recipe, you will need to par-bake the pie crust before adding the filling so it doesn’t get soggy since our pie filling is liquidy. I would par-bake both homemade and store bought pie crust, whichever one you decide to use.

How to Prepare the Pie Crust

The pie crust is made up of 5 ingredients if you want to count water, and is very simple to make. But you do have the option to use store bought pie crust to save some time.

  • Flour: A MUST obviously!
  • Sugar: Little more than a typical pie crust recipe because I like mine sweet.
  • Salt: To enhance the flavor.
  • Butter: For the best tasting pie crust. You could use shortening or a mixture of butter or shortening.
  • Water: Just enough for the dough to bind.

Ingredients for Southern Sweet Potato Pie

The ingredients for the sweet potato pie filling are also quite simple.

  • Sweet potatoes: This is the star of the recipe. The recipe calls for 15 oz by weight, so you can purchase about 1 pound of potato or 1 can of sweet potato. However, I highly recommend roasting your own sweet potato for that caramelized flavor from roasting.
  • Cream cheese: The key to making a cheesecake like sweet potato pie.
  • Condensed milk:  Use sweetened condensed milk for the sugar and added creaminess.
  • Eggs: This is a custard base pie filling, so we use egg to thicken.
  • Vanilla extract: For flavoring!
  • Spices: I used a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger for a traditional holiday vibe. Feel free to substitute or add other spices that you love.

How to Make the Best Sweet Potato Pie

The recipe calls for roasting the sweet potato while par-baking the pie crust. But it will take longer for the potatoes to cook, 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the size of your potatoes. If you want to cut down on waiting time while making the pie, you can roast the sweet potatoes ahead of time.

Once you have roasted and cooled the potatoes, making the pie filling is super easy. You don’t even need a stand mixer for this part.

  1. First, peel the potatoes and mash them in a bowl with a potato masher until creamy.
  2. Whisk together softened cream cheese and condensed milk, then the eggs, one at a time. Then beat in the mashed sweet potato, vanilla and spices until smooth.
  3. Pour the filling into the par-baked pie crust.

If you have excess batter, fill small ramekins and bake the ramekins along with the pie. Small ramekins filled half way will complete baking around 15 – 20 minutes.

Sweet Potato Pie

This Sweet Potato Pie is unlike any others you’ve eaten. The filling is made with cream cheese for a cheesecake like creaminess and texture you won’t be able to resist.

Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 1 and ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 rounded tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ¼ rounded teaspoon kosher salt
  • 5 ounce unsalted butter cold & cubed
  • 2 to 3 tablespoon cold water

Sweet Potato Pie Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese microwave 30 seconds to soften
  • 1 14 ounce can condensed milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 15 ounces sweet potato roasted & mashed, about 2 medium
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ginger

Instructions

Making the Pie Crust

  • Add flour, sugar and salt in a small mixing bowl and mix thoroughly with a whisk. Transfer flour mixture to a food processor fitted with the dough blade. Add cubed cold butter to the flour mixture, pulse several times until butter is about pea and bean size. Variations in size are okay.
  • Turn the food processor to “on” position and drizzle cold water over the dough mixture through the water hole, as soon as the dough starts to pull together turn the food processor off. You may need to stop the food processor in between and get a spatula to mix up the flour at the bottom.
  • Turn the dough out on the counter or cutting board, and shape into a disk. Wrap in plastic and rest in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
  • Take the disk of pie dough out of the fridge and roll into a circle about 2” larger than your pie dish. Use extra flour to keep the dough from sticking to the counter and roller.
  • Carefully place the dough over the pie dish, lightly press the dough into the bottom and side of the pie dish, let the excess dough hang over the side. Trim the excess dough leaving just enough to fold under and create a fluted edge.
  • Cover the pie dish with plastic wrap and keep refrigerated, or freeze (preferred), for 15 - 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  • Remove pie crust from the freezer and use a fork to poke steam vents on the bottom of the pie dough and on the sides.
  • Place a large piece of parchment paper over the frozen pie dough, place pie weights on top or pour dry beans on top to fill the whole pie crust. Make sure the parchment is large enough to cover the edges of the crust entirely.
  • Place the pie dish on a large baking sheet.
  • Pierce the sweet potatoes with the tip of a paring knife and wrap them in foil, place them next to the pie dish on the baking sheet.
  • Place the baking sheet with the pie crust and the sweet potatoes into the oven.
  • Bake pie crust for 25 minutes with pie weights or beans, then carefully remove the parchment paper along with the pie weights and bake for another 5 minutes.
  • Remove the pie crust from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.

Baking Sweet Potoates

  • Meanwhile, continue to bake the sweet potatoes for another 15 - 30 minutes until cooked through. Check the potatoes by piercing it with a paring knife or fork in the thickest part of the potato, if the knife or fork goes through easily, it is done.
  • Remove the sweet potatoes from the oven and allow to cool to the touch on a wire rack.
  • Once the potatoes are cool enough to peel, preheat the oven to 350°F and make the pie filling.

Making the Pie Filling

  • Peel the potatoes and mash it in a bowl with a potato masher.
  • In a larger bowl, whisk together softened cream cheese and condensed milk. Beat in the eggs, one at a time until smooth. Add mashed sweet potato, vanilla and spices and beat until smooth.
  • Place the pie dish with the par-baked crust on a baking sheet, pour filling into the crust. Cover the edge with a pie shield or thin strips of foil.
  • Bake for 35 - 40 minutes until the middle is still slightly jiggly.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature. Refrigerate until the filling is completely set, preferably overnight, before slicing.
