This Is the Mobility Exercise I Do Daily For Tight Hips, and It's Drastically Reduced My Tightness

A year ago I had surgery on my hip, and I've religiously been going to physical therapy ever since to regain my mobility and return to sport. I do a variety of mobility exercises, but the one that has arguably made the greatest impact on my recovery is the 90/90 exercise. It's improved my hip mobility and has helped me regain full function of my hip, which is important for overall health and for those who partake in physical activity.

You don't have to have had surgery to benefit from this exercise. Trainers and fitness professionals are beginning to focus on and implement mobility work into their programming, and this is arguably one of the most popular and accessible exercises for people to do. If you have tight hips and you're unable to perform squat and hinge movements with a full range of motion, this exercise is for you. Not to mention, it can help prevent injury, lower back pain, and knee pain.

It looks easy to do, but I'm warning you now that it is challenging. To reap the benefits of this exercise, you're going to have to perform it consistently (I'm talking at least three times a week), be patient, and make sure you're moving with intent.

How to Do the 90/90 Hip Mobility Exercise

  • Start seated on a yoga mat or on a comfortable surface. Make sure that your upper body is in a tall, neutral position. There shouldn't be any rounding or arching of the spine.
  • From here, bring your right leg in front of you, creating a 90-degree angle at your knee and hip joints so that your shin is perpendicular to your body. If you are unable to bring your leg into a 90-degree angle, bend your right knee so that your shin is closer to your thigh. Make sure to maintain an upright position and not to shift your bodyweight to the right.
  • Next, bend your left leg behind you, making 90-degree angles at your knee and hip joints. If you do not have the mobility to maintain this position, bend your left knee, bringing your shin closer to the midline of your body. Be sure to maintain an upright position with your upper body and to not shift your bodyweight to the left side.
  • If this is too advanced, you can also sit on top of a yoga block or a blanket to get into the position easier.
  • From here, lean forward with your upper body until you reach your end range. Be sure to maintain a neutral spine and not to shift your weight to the right or left sides of your body. Extend your arms out in front of you with your fingertips lightly touching the ground. You should feel a stretch in your right hip; be sure to keep your entire leg in contact with the ground. Hold this position for two minutes.
  • From here, start to lift your left knee up off of the ground and begin to open it to the left. Try to keep the right leg on the ground for as long as possible. Next, begin to peel your right knee off the ground. Continue to lower your left knee down to the ground followed by the right as you simultaneously rotate your torso to the left. If done correctly, you should be sitting upright in the starting position, leading with your left leg.
  • From here, lean forward with your upper body until you reach your end range. Be sure to maintain a neutral spine and not to shift your weight to the right or left sides of your body. Extend your arms out in front of your with your fingertips lightly touching the ground. You should feel a stretch in your left hip; be sure to keep your leg in contact with the ground. Hold this position for two minutes.
  • You can also make this move more dynamic by holding for two minutes, and then beginning to "flow" between performing 90/90, leading with each leg and completing 10 rotations in total.

Amazing Cranberry Relish

This is the easiest, most zingy, colorful and flavorful Cranberry Relish. Make your next turkey sing with this fresh relish. It’s super easy, full of fresh flavors and tops just about anything!

Add some color to your Thanksgiving this year! This will go with so many dishes but I do love it with Juicy Butter Herb Turkey or Cast Iron Skillet Pork Chops.

Sweet and zingy Cranberry Relish.

Cranberry Orange Recipe

Cranberry relish is absolutely divine. It’s fresh and uncooked, giving the cranberry an entirely different flavor. It’s so easy to make that you don’t have to stress. Because you throw it all in the food processor you don’t have to worry about it taking up space on the stove on a busy holiday baking day.

The zing, sweet and tart flavors are a match made in heaven and liven up any meal you serve it with. It will transform your holidays or your every day meal. You’ll want to put this on your to do list this holiday season!

Fresh Cranberry Relish Ingredients

  • Fresh Cranberries: These are usually found in the produce section of your local store when in season.
  • Orange: Cut it up but leave the peel on
  • Green Apple: Chop for best results
  • Pecans: Adds crunch and flavor
  • Sugar: You need the sugar to combat the bitter and tartness of the cranberries
  • Orange Juice:  Adds enough flavor and a bit of liquid to create the right consistency.

Making the Relish!

Place all of the ingredients in a food processor and pulse till coarsely ground. It is simple and will make a sweet and tangy relish that is to die for!

Making easy sweet and zingy Cranberry Relish.

Tips for the Best Cranberry Relish

  • Difference: This is called a relish because it uses fresh cranberries and fresh ingredients. Cranberry sauce is cooked.
  • Pick your Cranberries: Wash and pick through your cranberries and take out any bad ones. You can do this easily by putting them in a bowl of water. The good cranberries will float, any bad ones will sink. Just skim off the top and through the bad ones out.
  • Make A-Head: This is a great recipe to make ahead, up to 3 days in advance actually. I recommend allowing the relish to sit in the fridge for at least an hour or more to let the sugar break down the bitterness of the cranberries. And let the flavors meld together.
  • Customize: Make this to your liking. Add pear or pineapple instead of apple, cinnamon or ginger for extra spice.  For extra crunch add in celery or more nuts.
  • Fridge: You can keep this relish in an air tight container for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freezer: It can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Let thaw in the fridge before use.

Blended Cranberry Relish.

Uses for Homemade Relish

Besides eating it straight from the jar, there are lots of uses for this cranberry relish.

  • Meat: Cranberry is a shoe-in for Turkey but you can use it with chicken, pork or even beef with success
  • Dip: Pour over cream cheese and serve with crackers or chips.
  • Brie: Serve over baked brie
  • Dessert: Serve on top of cake, ice cream, or cheese cake. Divine!
  • Top it: This is yummy as a topping for waffles, pancakes, yogurt or toast.
  • Spread it: Use instead of mayo on your next sandwich.

All the Times Abbie Chatfiled Has Empowered Us to Love Our Ourselves

If you're anything like us, you haven't been able to get enough of Abbie "I'm a Gemini" Chatfield since her very first moment on the red carpet of The Bachelor Australia earlier this year. Of course, it's been quite a journey since then. We watched her romance with Bachelor Matt Agnew take off like a shooting star (get it? 'Coz he's an astrophysicist?!), but later fizzle out in the finale, when he chose Chelsie McLeod to be his love (their relationship as since fizzled too).

Throughout the season, and many times since then, Abbie has found herself on the receiving end of some pretty nasty comments about everything from her sex-positive attitude to her body, but like the absolute boss she is, she's continued to be true to herself, responding to her haters with empowering messages for everyone to learn from. Here are some of our favourites.

Plus, they help prevent scar-inducing picking habits. After two years spent in Health Canada’s regulatory process, Peace Out Skincare’s OTC Hydrocolloid Acne Patches are finally landing at local Sephora near you, making these zit stickers the first hydrocolloid patches this side of the border to be infused with additional pimple-fighting active ingredients, like salicylic acid, vitamin A and soothing aloe vera.

5 Nutrients to Boost Your Immune System

Anyone else feel like everyone around them has been coming down with the flu, viruses and other illnesses lately? Often, a change in season can compromise your immune system (particularly when we start to enter warmer months!), so today I’m sharing five foods and herbs to naturally support your immune system and keep you healthy!

1. Greens

Green vegetables – think broccoli, spinach, bok choy – are so important for your immune system! Not only are they an excellent source of important nutrients like iron, fibre, calcium and vitamins C and K, they also provide a chemical signal which encourages the immune cells in your gut and skin (both very important players in your immune system!) to function properly.

2. Garlic

Garlic has strong antiviral and antimicrobial properties, making it a weapon against illnesses! It is also a prebiotic, meaning it contains nutrients which nourish the bacteria in your gut. Since the gut contains 70% of the immune system, it’s an important thing to nourish!

3. Brazil nuts

Brazil nuts are a great source of selenium, an antioxidant that has been shown to support immune function and inflammation. Aim for a couple every day to support your immunity!

4. Echinacea

This herb supports your immune system by helping white blood cells to fight infection. I love it so much, I even included it in my Immune + formula, designed to provide amazing support to the immune system.

5. Citrus

Citrus fruits like lemon and orange are excellent for immunity! They contain heaps of Vitamin C, which increases the production of white blood cells which, as we’ve just discussed, help fight infections. Not to mention citrus also reduces inflammation, improves gastrointestinal health, and plays a role in preventing diseases like diabetes and cancer.

Sound in a New Light

Teno is a new kind of speaker, a new kind of light, a new way of relating to technology.

On its surface, Teno is a beautifully crafted bowl sculpture made from natural sand. When cracked open, it comes alive; revealing soft, warm light that you can adjust with a simple tap. When fully open, it’s a powerful speaker, releasing a rich sound that you control through touch.

This project began with a walk in the forest. On this day a few years ago, I found myself surrounded by the sounds of nature, birds chirping and water streaming in the distance — without seeing where they were coming from. It felt magical. I went home and got to work.

I set about creating a speaker that employed a similar magic, hiding the source of its sound. I found myself inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese art of piecing together broken parts rather than throwing them away. The technology is unexpectedly revealed as you break the object and piece it back together.

I want to break the cycle of yearly upgrades and obsolescence. I want to focus instead on delight, beauty, and quiet joy — that feeling that I get when I drink my morning coffee from an old ceramic cup that’s only gotten more beautiful over time. Teno is very much inspired by this idea of hanging on to the few precious pieces that we have at home. Max Gunawan, founder.

Abigail Spencer Talks Frames and Shaping the ‘Florista’ Culture

“As with all good things, it started with two women getting together,” Abigail Spencer tells us with a laugh of how her new collaboration with Montreal eyewear company BonLook came about. The former Suits actress met The Brand is Female’s Eva Hartling (who looks after the brand’s PR in the country) at a workshop earlier this year and the pair talked all things Canada and creativity. “I have a lot of strong connections to Canada, I’ve shot there a lot, and I’ve spent a lot of time in Canada. I also like to be creatively involved when I partner with brands,” she says adding that she really wants “to support female-owned companies.” Plus, there’s also the fact that she’s “secretly French. I mean I’m not at all but I think I am and so with the Canada relationship and being secretly French and wearing glasses all the time and that being a really integral part of my style, [Eva] introduced me to BonLook and here we go!”

Spencer is a self-confessed eyewear addict. “When you walk into my house, I have 20 pairs of sunglasses at the front door because I’m always experimenting,” she tells us, adding that her childhood and family’s connection to surfing played a large part in developing her addiction to the accessory. “I grew up surfing, my family are all professional surfers, I grew up in a surf shop [her family owns a surf shop on the Gulf Coast of Florida] so sunglasses aren’t just style, they’re a way of life, you actually need them.” Her mother’s style was also a big influence – “My mother really does look like if Donna Reid and Jackie O had a baby, and she was always wearing large frames, all black styles” – as well as Audrey Hepburn movies, like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Funny Face.

Photograph courtesy of BonLook.

BonLook approached Spencer to name the collection – she chose Betty, a nod to her family as it’s a surf term for a beautiful woman. It also happens to be the name of the vintage VW truck she’s using for her new business (more on that later). Due to COVID, Spencer also art directed the campaign shoot in Los Angeles. “BonLook really trusted me. Looking back I’m like, should they have trusted me that much? But it definitely worked out. I do produce and I also style myself a lot, I’m very involved,” she explains, adding that her favourite style in the collection is the Indio, the white version of which caught her eye during the shoot. “I’m pretty simple, I like a tortoise, I like black, but I really do like the white, they just look so good.” Plus, the style ends her hunt for a pair with a smaller frame. “I’m always looking for the perfect pair of sunglasses and I had been looking for something smaller, with a little bit more edge, and these are perfect.”

With one sunglass hunt over and the pandemic having settled in and suspended shooting across the States, Spencer found herself with “space to tend to other things because I’ve been very fortunate and very lucky as an actor to have been on sets for 20 years. This is really the first time that I’ve had a moment to tend to some other dreams,” she says. Spencer’s language is peppered with references to her passions, like florals (as seen above when she talks about tending) and surfing – she describes her new business, a floral delivery service called County Line Florals as having “caught the wave” on more than one occasion. It’s refreshing, and also reflects the genuine passion she has for the business – which she started to homage her late father, who died of a heart attack whilst surfing at Malibu’s County Line on Valentine’s Day in 2011. “It radically changed my life in every single possible way,” she recalls of the moment. “I’d always wanted to do something with Valentine’s Day and County Line – my dad is buried at Gulf Breeze, Florida, where I’m from but he lives on at County Line and it just followed me around.”

It was when she was shooting in North Carolina earlier this year that the idea was cemented. “I wanted to get an old surf truck, like a 1965 VW Transporter and turn it into a mobile flower shop because it didn’t exist in LA. I was like, I’ll call it County Line Florals, and it will homage my dad, bring elevated surf culture with design and florals and now I can have control over the florals I send people,” she says with a laugh.

What started out as a side business has now, as a result of the pandemic, become something more full-time and Spencer has big plans for the business, which will open its first storefront in LA later this month. “My dream is to do what coffee culture and ice cream culture has become – daily, artisanal practice. We’re trained now, we need our coffee and I want the same thing for florals, I want people to have the same accessibility and ease.” That’s why she and her team refer to themselves as ‘floristas’. “We’re not florists, we’re making up the daily brew,” she explains of the brand’s bouquets, which are named after women she knows or is inspired by. “This company is a love letter, not only to my dad who was my inspiration [but also] all of the incredible women in my life.” Plus, there’s a similarity between fashion and florals, given that they too are creating collections. “Just like BonLook does with their sunglasses, with the name, each bouquet is like a [piece of] fashion. We do custom, we can do a one-off, and we have seasonal collections.” And this is just the beginning. “It’s fun and it’s exciting to see how it will develop – it’s caught such wind and there’s more to come,” she says.  We bet(ty) there is.
