Virgil Abloh Announced a New Mentorship Series for Fashion Designers Today

In an effort to help a new generation of creatives gain the insights and skills need to thrive in the fashion world, Off-White founder and chief creative director, Virgil Abloh, has launched an online offering called Free-Game.

Described as a “resource center for brands in their earliest phases”, the video-driven content boasts advice ranging from tips on how to name a brand and obtain a trademark to guidance on shooting look books and for making a website. There’s also a catalogue of interviews by Abloh’s heroes like renowned graphic designer Peter Saville (whom Abloh describes as his “personal mentor”) and Japanese fashion creative Yohji Yamamoto, as well as inspirational moments from hip hop artist’s such as Jay-Z and Pharrell Williams.

“As part of my long-standing initiative to see design, art, and culture more inclusive to young Black designers and those coming from non-traditional backgrounds, I wanted to assist in providing the means for them to advance on the road to ownership of their ideas and brands,” Abloh, who is also the men’s artistic director at Louis Vuitton, said in a press release. “I am launching this organic platform for widespread access to information and mentorship. The exact notions and tools that I used to formulate my career open to all. For free. I will continuously be updating this page with the aim of the betterment of all-access knowledge.”

The release of Free-Game follows the unveiling of Abloh’s Post Modern Scholarship Fund, which was announced earlier this year; the fund’s mission statement is based around supplying Black students “an education in fashion via fundraising and mentorship in partnership with the Fashion Scholarship Fund.” Abloh’s partners in the endeavour include Evian, Farfetch, Louis Vuitton and Nike.

Donald Trump Said 85 Percent of People Who Wear Masks Get COVID-19. He's Wrong.

In a town hall-style event littered with his characteristic half-truths, exaggerations, and blatant lies, President Donald Trump delivered perhaps one of the most dangerous misrepresentations of scientific data to date, when he falsely claimed that 85 percent of people who wear masks contract COVID-19. Though wildly misinterpreted, the number stems from a report from the Centres For Disease Control (CDC), in which researchers assessed the community exposures that were most likely to predict someone testing positive for COVID-19. As moderator Savannah Guthrie pointed out during the NBC town hall, the findings were actually "mask neutral."

Among the 154 patients who tested positive for COVID-19, 85 percent reported wearing a mask always or often. By comparison, 89 percent of people who tested negative, despite having COVID-like symptoms, reported doing the same. While the study wasn't designed to draw any conclusions on mask wearing, it's worth noting that this data was self-reported, which can be unreliable. Wearing a mask is the socially acceptable thing to do, and it's possible that the numbers reflect that. The CDC has also never claimed that a mask will shield the wearer from the virus. Masks prevent respiratory droplets from escaping into the air, which can help reduce the spread in the event that the person wearing the mask has COVID-19.

More importantly, the study found that, in the two weeks prior to developing symptoms, the most likely predictors of COVID-19 infection were close contact with someone who had tested positive and dining at a restaurant. In fact, those with COVID-19 were more than twice as likely to report dining out than those who tested negative. Restaurants have long been considered a risk, because masks can't be worn while eating. When releasing the findings of the study, the CDC encouraged people to choose pick-up and delivery if possible.

It's unclear if Trump purposely mischaracterized the research, or if he simply didn't take the time to understand it - but coming from a White House that has consistently flouted CDC guidelines on mask wearing and social distancing, it's alarming at best. At worst, it's yet another setback in any attempts to mount an effective national response to a pandemic that has claimed more than 218,000 American lives.

Charlotte Cardin Takes Us Inside The New Gabrielle Chanel, Fashion Manifesto Exhibition

On September 30, I was invited to the opening of the remarkable Gabrielle Chanel, Fashion Manifesto exhibition at the Palais Galliera in Paris. The exhibit, laid out mainly in chronological order, had me traveling through decades of female empowerment characterized by Chanel’s creative revolutions.

See some of the highlights from the exhibition below:

Ode to the material, not the ornament

Seeing hundreds of vintage pieces that all represented how Gabrielle Chanel broke the existing fashion codes and reinvented women’s fashion prioritizing practicality, elegance and comfort was my highlight of the exhibit. At a time when it was all about flamboyant colors, uncomfortable corsets and obnoxious embellishments, Chanel had better ambitions for female fashion. Throughout her life (and evident throughout the entire exhibition) Coco Chanel prioritized quality materials and elegant simplicity, rather than adding unnecessary ornaments. Her pieces were made with soft materials, allowing the modern woman to be comfortable and sophisticated in her busy everyday life. I was fascinated by the many tweed pieces (resistant, comfortable and borrowed directly from men’s fashion by Chanel), fringe dresses (travel-friendly and practical, as they never wrinkle in your suitcase), and versatile and tasteful creations (like her silk bolero top that can be turned into a scarf, once again prioritizing movement and practicality). Chanel would apparently ask her clients to cross their arms when she measured them for custom pieces, as she wanted the measurements to allow her clients to move freely in her creations.

One of the first patrimoine pieces of the exhibit is an ivory printed surah dress from the early 1930s. Elegant and yet casual, its main perk is the presence of two medium-sized pockets on the hips. Something we modern women may take for granted was revolutionary at the time; a small detail like a pocket was an affirmation that women could, and would, carry their own money, without needing their husband’s approval, to spend it where they wanted to.

Lucky N°5

Maybe it’s because five is also my lucky number, maybe it’s because it reminds me of my grandmothers’ hugs or maybe it’s because it was created almost a century ago and still has one of the most modern signature scents – but I certainly have a weak spot for Chanel’s most famous perfume. Created in 1921, the iconic N°5 has an entire room dedicated to its story in the exhibition. In the middle of that room, the very first model of the fragrance’s bottle sits in a glass box. The flask’s art deco design, minimal and elegant, has barely changed since its creation. Mixing flowery, woody and spicy notes, Chanel once again created new feminine codes; this time in a unique scent allowing women to add an androgynous touch to their look and defining femininity with a brand new vocabulary.

You’ll Be Able to Get a Byredo Candle for Just $7 Next Month at IKEA

IKEA is back with yet another headline-making collab, this time teaming up with Swedish fragrance and beauty company Byredo on a collection of luxury candles. And given that we’re heading into winter and will be spending plenty of time indoors (we’re pros at this now), there’s never not a reason to buy a new candle (or five) to give your home a little something extra.

Ben Gorham, the founder of Byredo, was born in Sweden and then spent a chunk of his childhood in Toronto before moving to New York and then back to his home country. He founded the brand in 2006 and it has since become a cult-favourite of editors, influencers, celebrities and luxuryphiles across the globe. The candles currently on offer in Byredo’s main line start at $60 and go up to $120 – which makes the IKEA collab all the more exciting, as prices start at just $6.99 (the most expensive candle is the range is just $27.99 for a large, four-wick design).

The Byredo x IKEA collab is called OSYNLIG, and includes 13 scented candles, designed to “provoke a wide range of emotion – from nostalgic memories, dreams of the future and, above all, heighten the experience of being at home through scent,” according to a release. The scents have been divided into three categories – floral, woody and fresh.

In a release, IKEA says the collaboration allowed the brand to highlight the importance of “invisible design” to make our living spaces even more welcoming. “Invisible design – the use of smell, sound and light – can offer new and unexpected solutions to the challenges we face in our lives at home today,” says the company. Gorham also notes the power of a signature home scent. “The way your home smells is very emotional and plays a huge part in how you feel about being there,” he says. “Smell is a very relevant part of the home, and it creates a sense of comfort and security.”

More than just smelling amazing, the candles are also beautifully packaged (no surprise given Byredo’s signature aesthetic). The candles come in small, medium and large sizes and you’ll want to keep each of the sleek, triangle-embossed containers once you’re done with the scent to stylishly update your pen holder, for example, or perhaps house your face masks?

The collection will launch in all IKEA stores across Canada, as well as online at ikea.ca, on November 1.

Chocolate Chip Pancake Recipe

This combines the two best things that make mornings worth getting out of bed for. Carbs and chocolate. Kids will eat them up, (adults too) and parents don’t have to feel guilty about it. I like to pair with something a bit savory like bacon, eggs or sausage to balance the sweet.

Top these with your favorite toppings, we have some ideas listed below or just some butter. They are so good you don’t need too much. These will turn an ordinary day into a special occasion just because. Stirring the chocolate chips into the batter keeps them from burning yet allows them to get melty and sweet. You are going to love these!

Pancake Ingredients

Simple ingredients for a quick morning meal! Pantry staples that will help make these pancakes come together easily.

  • Egg: Use extra large eggs
  • Oil: Canola oil gives you the fat you need without the flavor other oils can add.
  • Milk: Feel free to substitute with buttermilk if you wish
  • Vanilla: Adds a touch sweetness
  • Flour: All purpose, unbleached are both good.
  • Salt: Balances the sweet.
  • Sugar: Adds just enough of sweetness but too much.
  • Baking Powder:This is your rising agent for fluffy pancakes.
  • Chocolate Chips: The star of the recipe

How to Make Chocolate Chip Pancakes

Mix it up and you are good to go! These are light and fluffy pancakes that are a family favorite!

  1. Wet: In a medium bowl whisk the egg, oil, milk, and vanilla together.
  2. Dry: In a separate bowl combine the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder.
  3. Mix: Fold the dry into the wet and mix just till combined. Gently mix in the chocolate chips
  4. Cook: Grease a skillet preheated on medium, spoon the batter into the skillet, once bubbles form on top, flip them and cook till golden brown.

Tips and Variations For The Best Chocolate Chip Pancake

It’s hard to get much better than they already are but here are some ways.

  • Rest:  Let your mix rest for about 5 min before cooking. Preheat your skillet during this time to allow the mix to rest.
  • Chocolate: You can use any kind of chocolate for these. Try mini chocolate chips, milk, dark, or even white chocolate chips.
  • Flour: You can use whole wheat flour for these, use 3/4 cup of whole wheat flour for every 1 cup of reg flour and add 2 more tablespoons of liquid
  • Double: Need to cook for a small army or just hungry teenager. This is easy to double, or even triple.
  • Freeze: Double or triple the batch and cook all the extras. Once completely cooled store in a freezer safe ziploc bag for quick breakfasts in the morning. Take out your desired amount and heat in the microwave or toaster. A nice way to have pancakes on those busy mornings.
  • Syrup: Be sure to heat your syrup so it doesn’t cool off your pancakes.

Toppings for Homemade Pancakes

Besides just eating these plain with a pat of butter, you can really go wild with toppings.

  • Strawberries: Chocolate covered strawberries anyone?
  • Raspberries: Fresh is best but thawed frozen is still amazing.
  • Whip cream: Because everything is better with whip cream
  • Syrup: Real Maple Syrup is divine.
  • Peanut Butter: Haven’t tried it? It’s so good especially with maple syrup drizzled over the peanut butter.
  • Powdered Sugar: A kid favorite.
  • Coconut: Chocolate and coconut just go together.
  • Jam: Any flavor works.

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 Tablespoons oil I used canola oil
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

Dehydration Nation: Are YOU Drinking Enough?

Good hydration is essential for our bodies to run properly. The average person can last for up to eight to twelve weeks without food – but only three to five days without fluids.

But we are not hitting our targets; the Recommended Daily Allowance for water is 2.5 litres for males and 2 litres for females, but the average person consumes just 1.7 litres daily.

So Why Is Water So Important?

Water is essential for a number of bodily functions, including homeostatic functions like moderating electrolyte balance and body temperature. It is also crucial for effective digestion, in that it works with the fibre from your diet to keep your bowels moving, helping to remove waste.

Of course, water makes up over 60% of the human body, so it also constitutes a large part of our bodily fluids; it is essential for creating saliva, which helps to digest our food as we chew it, and it also makes up a large amount of your blood plasma, which keeps your heart healthy and enables your body to disperse oxygen more effectively.

Therefore, drinking enough water (alongside other factors such as eating well, exercising regularly, and keeping a healthy home environment) is essential to maintaining good overall wellbeing.

What Are The Side Effects Of Not Drinking Enough?

If you don’t drink enough from time to time, you may experience some constipation, fatigue, muscle weakness, and headaches.

But if you don’t drink enough water over an extended period of time, you may experience more severe health issues, including:

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
  • Kidney stones
  • Hypertension
  • Intestinal failure
  • And even dementia

Water is also essential for good cognition, and dehydration may have an effect your mood and concentration levels. For example, two studies by the University of Connecticut found that even mild dehydration could affect mood, and cause fatigue and headaches.

Also, there is good evidence that hydration is essential for mental health; one 2018 Iranian study published in the World Journal of Psychiatry found that among a sample of 3,327 adults, drinking five glasses of water a day was found to decrease risk of depression, while drinking just two glasses of water increased the risk of depression by as much as 73% for men and 54% for women.

Why Are So Many People Not Drinking Enough?

Research has shown that as many two thirds of us aren’t drinking enough water. But if it’s so important for our health and wellbeing, why is this the case?

  • Taste – In a study by Robinsons, over half of British people reported that they didn’t like the taste of water, with many describing it as ‘boring’.
  • Lack of awareness – While day-to-day dehydration can usually be diagnosed by headaches, constipation, fatigue and muscle weakness, chronic dehydration over an extended period of time can lead to the body attempting to subsist on a smaller amount of water. This means that if you’ve been dehydrated for a long time, you might not actually feel thirsty.
  • Water distrust – A study in the US in 2019 found that many students attended schools with taps that were not tested for lead. This Kenney study referenced another study in 2014, which found that Black and Hispanic adults were less likely to consume enough water on the grounds that they were concerned their local supply was not safe to drink.

Who Is At Risk?

For some, it is easy to tell when they are dehydrated. Others may have more difficulty.

Older adults, especially, may have difficulties with hydration for a range of reasons. Firstly, for reasons directly associated with health; age-related deterioration of kidney function may mean that fluids are adequately regulated.

Diabetes and kidney diseases may also contribute to excessive loss of water, and those who experience swallowing difficulties are likely to not drink enough. Additionally, people with cognitive impairments such as dementia, may not be as aware of their thirst.

Similarly, infants and children are particularly at risk, as they are the most likely to experience severe vomiting and diarrhoea, may not be able to tell their carers when they are thirsty, and have a higher surface area to volume ratio, meaning that they lose more water for their size than the average adult.

Like some older adults with poor mobility, young children may also be unable to get a drink for themselves.

How I Do I Tell If I Am Dehydrated?

There are a few main symptoms of dehydration to watch out for:

  • The most obvious, but not necessarily the most reliable indicator, is thirst. We only begin to feel thirsty when we are already dehydrated, so if you feel thirsty, DRINK! But even if you don’t feel thirsty, drinking should be part of your daily routine – especially if you have difficulty recognising your thirst.
  • Urine colour – One of the simplest, and least subjective, ways of recognising dehydration, is by monitoring your urine colour. If you are drinking enough, your urine should be clear or very pale yellow. If you are dehydrated, it will be a darker yellow. If your urine is brown, you are extremely dehydrated, and possibly suffering from other health conditions such as liver cirrhosis, so in this instance, you should seek medical attention.
  • Headaches – Dehydration headaches feel different to different people, but many describe dehydration headaches as a pulsing pain in the temples. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of headache, so the next time that your head is throbbing, reach for a glass of water instead of a paracetamol!

Even if you’re not a fan of drinking water, the fact is it’s crucial for survival.

There are lots of ways to include more water in your diet, so why not experiment with a new routine and see what works for you? You will notice the difference to your health, skin, focus, concentration, and mental wellbeing!

What Does Buttermilk Do?

One of the main reasons we love buttermilk is its tart flavor and creamy thickness it adds to our favorite recipes. But it is actually essential to baking and cooking. Another important part is it has acid in it.  This acid reacts to baking soda or baking powder causing your muffins, pancakes, and breads to rise. It’s not an ingredient you can just substitute with just anything. That’s why adding lemon juice and vinegar which are acids, works.

  • Milk: Use whole, 2%, 1% milk according to your desire of fat content.
