Two layers of decadent bliss make up this delicious dump cake recipe that is filled with sweet fall pumpkin spice flavor. Pumpkin Dump Cake is super simple to prepare. It has a crushed pecan filled cake-like top layer and a smooth and rich bottom pumpkin layer that tastes similar to pumpkin pie.

Easy Pumpkin Dump Cake

Though the name “dump cake” isn’t the most appealing, the dessert is extremely decadent with a bold flavor. The name just describes the process of dumping the ingredients into a bowl and mixing before then dumping it into a baking dish, or just dumping all the ingredients together in one dish. For this easy pumpkin dump cake, you’ll have two mixing bowls for the two layers. Then you’ll dump those mixtures straight into your baking dish and bake it. It’s really that easy.

I absolutely love sweet pumpkin recipes, especially easy ones like pumpkin monkey bread and pumpkin French toast casserole. Pumpkin pie will always be my favorite Thanksgiving desserts so this cake has quickly become one I make every year. This easy pumpkin dump cake makes a delicious dessert alternative to pumpkin pie.

How to Make Pumpkin Dump Cake:

With a slightly fluffy top layer made of yellow cake mix covered with melted butter and chopped pecans and a smooth bottom layer remnant of pumpkin pie, you won’t be able to stop eating this cake. Best of all it’s fit for a crowd (if you feel like sharing).

  1. Prep: preheat the oven to 350ºF and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Make the Pumpkin Layer: beat the pumpkin pie mix, eggs, evaporated milk, sugar, salt, and pumpkin pie spice together until smooth. Pour into the prepared dish.
  3. Prepare the Cake Layer: in a large bowl combine the cake mix, flour, sugar, and pecans with a whisk and spread on top of the pumpkin layer. Sprinkle with additional pecans if desired.
  4. Butter: Melt the butter in a small bowl and pour on top of the cake.
  5. Bake: Place the cake in the oven to bake for 60 to 70 minutes or until the center is firm and the top a golden brown. Let cool for 20 minutes before cutting to serve.

How to Serve Dump Cake:

How you serve this pumpkin dump cake is entirely up to you. It can be served warm or chilled and adding additional toppings is always a good idea. Some additional topping ideas are vanilla ice cream, caramel syrup, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, or cool whip. Load it up for the ultimate indulgence.

How to Store Pumpkin Dump Cake:

This cake is best kept in the baking dish fitted with a top or covered in plastic wrap and kept in the refrigerator. Because this cake is made with pumpkin is slightly more gooey than and fruit dump cake and stays together best when stored in the refrigerator. To serve it warm just heat it in the oven set to 250ºF or the microwave.

Can you freeze dump cake?

Unfortunately, no. Dump cakes do not freeze well because they’re so gooey. Once the cake is defrosted it becomes a gooey mess that’s also watery.

Can I use a different boxed cake mix?

Absolutely! This recipe calls for a yellow cake mix, however, you could easily use chocolate, pumpkin, or even vanilla. This recipe is pretty versatile.

Can I use pumpkin puree instead of pumpkin pie mix?

Of course! The pumpkin pie mix already has spices and sugar mixed in, which makes it extra sweet. The pureed pumpkin will cut down on some of the sweetness and have a slightly less spicy flavor. Either version will work well.

Ingredients

Pumpkin Filling

  • 1 30 ounce can Pumpkin Pie mix not puree
  • 3 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Evaporated Milk or Heavy Cream
  • 2/3 cup Sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Pumpkin Pie Spice

Cake Topping

  • 1 15.25 ounce Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1/2 cup Flour
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 cup Chopped Pecans plus more for top
  • 1 cup Butter

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350ºF and lightly grease or spray a 9x13 baking dish or cake pan.
  • In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or using a large bowl and a handheld mixer, combine the pumpkin pie mix, eggs, evaporated milk, sugar, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat until well combined.
  • Pour the pumpkin mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  • Dump the yellow cake mix, flour, sugar, and pecans into a medium-sized mixing bowl and whisk until mixed evenly. Sprinkle on top of the pumpkin mixture.
  • Add additional pecans to the top of the batter if desired.
  • In a small bowl melt the butter and pour over the top of the cake as evenly as possible (It won't completely cover the top).
  • Bake at 350ºF for 60 to 70 minutes or until the center is firm and a golden brown. Let cool for 20 minutes before slicing and serving.

This Tik Tok Video About Vagina Discharge Went Viral and Well, the More You Know . . .

Tik Tok is a wild, wonderful place filled with all the content we so desperately need and deserve to get us through 2020. One of our favourite things about the social media platform is the viral moments it gives us. Case in point: the video of Alyssa Cochran-Caggiano asking what anyone with a vagina has always secretly wondered - Why does vaginal discharge bleach your underwear?

In a video that's been viewed over four million times, Alyssa decides to pose the question and show anyone without a vagina exactly what she's talking about. "Is no one else completely terrified by the bleaching properties of a vagina?" she asks, "Like, how does she do that?". Alyssa then goes on to show the panty line of a few pairs of her clean underwear, and whaddya know, the crotches on all of them were discoloured.

Anyone with a vagina and wifi access immediately felt seen and could relate with the comments section being flooded with praise for normalising vaginal discharge. As someone with a vagina, who has always looked at her undies post-wash and thought WTF happened here? GIRL CAN RELATE.

After her video went viral, Alyssa decided to do a follow-up video explaining why exactly discharge bleaches underwear, "The bleaching of the underwear from vaginal discharge is entirely normal. Vaginal discharge can be pretty acidic and therefore interacts with the dye in your underwear and bleaches it."

She goes on to note that if you don't experience this "it's also ok, what you do need to be wary of, is changes in your body, so if you're experiencing one thing for a while and then suddenly experience something else, maybe you should go get checked out," explains Alyssa.

Tips and Variations for the Absolutely Perfect Bread:

  • Pumpkin: Make sure you buy canned pumpkin puree and don’t confuse it with canned pumpkin pie filling. They are two very different things. The pie filling will have sugar and spices already added, you just want plain pumpkin so make sure you double check your can.
  • Add-ins: Make variations to this recipe by adding a half of cup of chopped pecans, or walnuts. Chocolate chips, cranberries or raisins.
  • Muffins: You can easily turn these into muffins, just pour into greased muffin tin filling each about 3/4 full. Bake for 20 minutes or till an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Should make roughly 24 muffins.
  • Double: This is simple to double and make two loaves. One to eat right away and one to save for later.

Make Homemade Pumpkin Puree:

Super simple and fun to do, fresh puree will make these Pumpkin Pie Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Whipped Cream that much more amazing.

  1. Prep: Take a small 4-6 pound pumpkin, often called a sugar or pie pumpkin and cut off the stem with a sharp knife. Cut the pumpkin in half and scoop out the seeds and strings. Keep the seeds if you want to roast them later.
  2. Roast: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lay the pumpkin cut side down on a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper. Roast until a knife can easily be inserted and the flesh feels soft. Should take about 35-45 minutes depending on the size.
  3. Scrape: Once the pumpkin has cooled scrape the insides from the shell and place in a food processor.
  4. Puree: Blend until smooth and creamy. The puree can then be stored in your fridge for a few days or in the freezer for a few months.

Storing Pumpkin Bread:

Everyone will love this so much, there may not be leftovers but if there are, it’s easy to store:

  • Storage: Pumpkin bread does not need to be refrigerated. Make sure it’s cooled completely and store tightly wrapped in a cool dry place for up to 4 days. If it lasts longer than that, put in the fridge for up to 7 days.
  • Freeze: This freezes beautifully. Once the loaf is completely cooled wrap in plastic wrap, at least two layers to prevent freezer burn. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw on the counter top overnight.

Texture Talk: Viola Davis Dives Into the Complicated Politics of Black Women’s Hair

“Subversion and protest can be very loud or very quiet,” said Cityline’s Tracy Moore on Monday afternoon. The daytime talk show host is leading a virtual chat with acclaimed actress, producer and L’Oréal Paris ambassador Viola Davis during the Toronto International Film Festival, and a handful of beauty industry insiders are glued to their WFH screens carefully listing in. “Talk a bit about the courage it takes for a Black woman to move through the world with her natural hair—the way it grows out of [her] head—because it’s a statement in itself to wear [natural] hair. It’s a big deal,” continued Tracy.

Her question throws to Viola’s 2012 Oscars red carpet look, when the actress was up for Best Actress for her role in The Help, and chose to de-wig and debut her natural texture. Prior to that head-turning moment, the now Emmy, Oscar and Tony Award-winning performer had donned an array of wigs and hairpieces on red carpets to compliment her outfits. Viola’s glowing look was a teachable moment, giving the world a crash course in the ever-complicated politics of Black hair.

“It goes back to hiding. It goes into erasure and invisibility and that has its birthplace in systemic racism,” answered the How to Get Away with Murder star into her computer screen. “It was projected in culture that [the Black woman] wasn’t pretty, and the darker you were, the uglier you were. And we carry that mentality [as Black women]. We just carry it, even in unforeseen ways,” she continued about the long-standing hang-ups that still remain around Black beauty at large. “That’s why I wore my natural hair.”

And freeing her natural coils was not only a symbol of silent protest against Eurocentric beauty standards, but of finally finding harmony within herself. “By that point, I was exhausted. Every time I was on a red carpet, it felt like a strange sort of mixture of ‘I belonged on a red carpet [because] I was dressed appropriately’, but also that I was trying to be myself, and I could never find the balance,” she said. “When I took the wig off, I found the balance. And I have to tell you, I felt really good. I felt surprised with how good I felt. I wrote my own headline [that night]: ‘Viola stuns with her natural hair.’”

After Tracy and Viola’s spine-tingling conversation, we had the chance to snag a couple of minutes with the actress and ask her more about her public hair journey. Here’s what she shared:

How would you describe your relationship with your hair throughout your professional acting career and how has it evolved?

“It’s a complete journey. Whenever you get a role as an actress, the first thing is: How can you transform? Of course, your hair is the number one thing that you feel like can transform you into a character. But, I never felt like my own hair was an option for a character. The big step for me was the movie Widows with director Steve McQueen. When we were talking about hair, I gave him this huge monologue about what hair I should wear, then hung up. He called back and said, ‘Why can’t you wear your hair?’ And there was just silence. I think part of that was because I was the lead in the movie, and just felt like my hair wasn’t an option. There’s something about connecting natural hair that’s kinky to ‘what’s not beautiful’. And not only to what’s not beautiful, but that natural hair isn’t even in the conversation of beauty.

I always quote Steve McQueen on this because, whether Steve McQueen realized it or not, it was such a powerful statement. He said, ‘I see this Black woman all the time, Viola. I see her in airports, on the streets in Paris and she’s beautiful and she’s with her boyfriend. So it’s about time that we introduced her on screen.’ That’s what my [hair] journey has been. It’s almost like a journey into self-acceptance, and my hair was neck-and-neck with that. My hair has reflected that journey in the past, and certainly in How To Get Away With Murder, my hair went through every incarnation. It’s not that I don’t wear wigs anymore, but my big thing now is: At least I see [my hair] as an option, and not just if I’m playing, say, someone who would be considered of a certain income bracket, or someone who would be considered not attractive. I consider my hair to be an option in the broad spectrum of whatever I do as an actress.”

Canadian Designer Tanya Taylor Enlists Celebrity Friends for NYFW Video That Has Nothing to do With Fashion

Canadian designer Tanya Taylor opted out of showing her new collection at New York Fashion Week today – a first for the brand. Instead, Taylor, whose brand is based in the city, opted to use her time slot to promote an important message for her US customers: voter registration.

Bringing together a whole host of friends of the brand, the purpose of the video was simple: Taylor wanted to show her followers everything that took longer than registering to vote (which takes just two minutes, in case you were wondering). Opening the 1:52 long video, Taylor said, “How we spend our time right now is something really important to consider, and we got to thinking that watching a fashion show actually takes more time than registering to vote.”

The clever clip then cuts to various celebrities doing everyday activities that take longer than two minutes, like Mindy Kaling watering her plants, Hillary Clinton playing with her dog, Stephanie Beatriz putting in contacts, Canadian designer Aurora James making a cup of coffee, Sasheer Zamata hula hooping and more.

The brand has adopted a new approach to showcasing its collections, opting instead for a direct-to-consumer model which will see the Spring 2021 collection debut to press and consumers in January, just a few weeks ahead of when it will land in retail stores. In light of this, Taylor explained in a press release how she didn’t want to give up her NYFW slot when she could use it as an opportunity to make change. “There are a lot of eyes on us during NYFW and I feel it is my responsibility to use the platform I have within the industry to speak up and encourage positive change at such an important time in our lives,” the designer said in a press release. “Our community of strong, empowered women are the heart of our brand, and as always, we aim to empower them and lift up their voices, this time through civic action and voting.”

Given that she is a Canadian citizen, Taylor is ineligible to vote in the upcoming election however that doesn’t mean she wanted to take a seat on the sideline. “My business is a New York City business, our employees are American and leadership affects our livelihood,” she told WWD. “This is an important election and I feel a responsibility to my team and to my community to use the platform that I have to advocate for what I believe in. It’s important to still be a cheerleader even if you can’t play the game.”

Good News, People: Savage x Fenty Vol. 2 Will Stream on Amazon Next Month

In news we all needed this week as the weather starts to cool down and lockdown looms once again – Rihanna is bringing the second round of her Savage x Fenty show to Amazon next month.

The news was announced today in a video uploaded by Amazon Prime. The Savage x Fenty Vol. 2 show is to take place on October 2nd and, as per usual, looks set to be a showcase we won’t soon forget.

The short teaser showed RiRi walking around backstage in a face mask and face shield and revealed that a host of music’s top names will perform throughout the show including Travis Scott, Miguel, Rosalía (who recently starred in her first MAC campaign wearing Toronto-based designer Mikhael Kale), Bad Bunny, Roddy Rich and Ella Mai.

And if that wasn’t enough to get your excited about this year’s show, the list of confirmed names should do it. Cara Delevingne, Lizzo, Demi Moore, Bella Hadid, Irina Shayk, Big Sean, Will Smith, Normani, Paris Hilton, Paloma Elsesser, Laura Harrier, Shea Coulee, Miss 5th Ave, Jada Essence Hall, Rico Nasty, Christian Combs, Chika and Erika Jayne are among those confirmed to appear on the runway.

Vancouver-Based MUA Timothy Hung Puts The Art in Makeup Artistry

Timothy Hung was looking forward to his Grade 9 fashion studies course when his guidance counsellor called him into the office. “You will be the only boy in the class. Are you sure you want to do this?” Hung recalls the teacher asking.

But he soldiered on with the sunny demeanour that has helped him power through many moments that could have soured his spirit. Physical punishment was common when Hung was growing up in Taiwan, and a mistake during piano lessons meant getting his knuckles smacked. At age 10,  he arrived at his new school in Vancouver speaking almost zero English. He endured bullying and name-calling from his teenage peers, and later, a recurring lung issue led to a battle with anxiety and several surgeries.

Today, Hung’s conceptual makeup artistry is a testament to his strength and conviction. To him, a face is a canvas on which anything is possible—from abstract waves to metal accents. His clients include Christian Dior, Kat Von D, Shu Uemura, Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Nars and Make Up For Ever, and he teaches advanced artistry to professional makeup artists.

It was while working backstage with M.A.C at Milan Fashion Week that the “art” of makeup artistry first clicked for Hung. He was fresh out of makeup school at the Blanche Macdonald Centre in Vancouver, where he had been taught that using brushes was the only way to apply product.

“At a Ferragamo show, Tom Pecheux wanted us to do smoky eyes with just our fingers,” explains Hung. “He has a set way of layering the colour and pigments, and the makeup turned out wonderful. It started me thinking that I could experiment more.”

Hung was also moved, quite literally, by the rehearsal music that was constantly blasting while he was prepping models for the runways. “It put me in that mindset where I could use music to guide me in that creative outlet and see where it took me.”

Hung listens to cinematic scores while he creates. And there is a lyrical quality to his work, with its bold sweeps of colour and staccato sequin dots. Sometimes he uses a product as it’s meant to be used and sometimes not.

“I use a lot of liquid lipstick from Anastasia Beverly Hills as eyeshadow, liner and blush and sometimes even as mascara,” he says. “I’ll put it on the back of my hand and scoop a blob with a disposable mascara wand.” For the photo below, Hung applied eyeliner all over his face with angled brushes to achieve the fine lines and curves.

It was when he was a boy of 10, watching his mother prep his sister for her traditional Chinese dance performances, that his interest in makeup started to stir. But his artistic leanings were channelled through after-school art classes, where he worked in pencil, charcoal and watercolour and learned cartooning and portraiture.

Hung was also deep into fashion design, thanks to a teacher who recognized his skill and singled him out to make a tailored jacket in Grade 9. He went on to win regional and provincial Project Runway-style competitions run by Skills Canada.

After high school, Hung was accepted at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan, and he attacked the fashion design program with his usual zeal. “I was sleeping four to five hours a day,” he says. “I wanted to do well. It was very expensive. I wanted to make sure I got the most out of the experience. If the teacher said ‘You have to do five designs,’ I would do seven to 10. I dove right in—and then I got sick.”

Back home, recuperating after two surgeries for spontan­eous pneumothorax, a condition in which the lung collapses with no warning or provocation, Hung finally decided to enrol in makeup school.

“When I first started, I didn’t have the ambition to create master artwork,” he admits. “I just wanted to make someone look beautiful and feel happy. For me, that was very rewarding. The art came when I allowed myself to experiment and do things outside the box.”

The looks Hung created on himself and photographed for these pages took eight hours each (or more), which is typical given their extraordinary level of detail. “I want the face to be like an embellished couture dress,” he says. “I want to create work that when people see it, they feel something. I don’t want it to be just another beautiful image. I want it to tell a story.”
