Katherine Ryan Talks Fashion, Meghan Markle and Her New Netflix Show, The Duchess

After two standup comedy specials on Netflix, Canadian comedian Katherine Ryan is back on the platform but this time with a scripted series titled The Duchess. The show centres around a “fashionably disruptive” single mom in London, toying with the idea of having a second child with her estranged ex, a troubled former boy bander.

The six episode series sees the lead character, also named Katherine, navigating co-parenting, dealing with the other moms at her daughter’s school, and managing her own business, all in fabulous, flamboyant outfits—think jewel toned coats, silk separates and statement accessories. The Duchess begins streaming on Netflix on September 11; watch the trailer below and read on for our interview with Katherine Ryan.

Tell us about the character and why fashion was an important narrative tool for this story.
I explore a lot of eccentric fashion and a lot of British designers in my standup. Partly because when I started out as a standup comedian I was told that I should dress to be invisible. There was this idea that women couldn’t be funny if we looked distracting. So it was just really rebellious. I started working with my stylist Jennifer Michalski-Bray about eight years ago and really built that high glam stage persona in the UK. So with The Duchess it was important to me that that character be cohesive with my stage persona. I also thought it was powerful and meaningful, and showed intention and self-care for this woman to be fashionable. So many single moms that I see represented on screen are a mess. And I didn’t want this woman to be a mess.

Her style is very vibrant and luxe, with feathered pyjamas, silk robes, embellished headbands. What did you want the clothing to say about the character?
She’s very high status. She’s a bit of a narcissist. She takes no notice of society or what is acceptable behaviour. So I wanted her fashion to be high status. We used a lot of Victoria Percival headbands, big chunky headbands, because I thought it was the next best thing to a crown. I think headbands are beautiful, and you don’t have to take them off. You have to take hats off sometimes if you go into a restaurant but headbands are the hat you can leave on all day. We went with a lot of different socks, pops of colour with a Gucci sock and a heel. We played with colour a lot too because I wanted Katherine to pop out a bit against the grey backdrop of London. And I did write a few fashion elements into the script and tried to make punchlines with them. The “world’s smallest pussy” sweater [in the first episode], that’s mine, and it’s a Rachel Antonoff subversive, feminist piece. It actually means the opposite of what it looks like it means; it’s a shoutout to the patriarchy, like ‘is this what you want?’ So we played with humour and fashion because a lot of people think they can’t go together but fashion should be fun.

Tell us about the line between life and art when it comes to this series.
I thought it was important to stretch out my stage persona a little bit and to take a couple jokes from my standup specials and illustrate them in the sitcom just to keep it cohesive and to give people who watch my standup specials a little acknowledgement. My real life is a lot more subdued. The Katherine character in The Duchess is a fantasy. She says all the things that I wouldn’t actually say, she defends her child in an unapologetic tigress sense, she has no middle ground; she’s all in. That’s how we’re different. But we’re also similar in that my relationship with my daughter is the central relationship in my life. I’ve never prioritized men, and I do believe in sacrifice for your children.

When it comes to women in comedy or just women in entertainment playing someone with shades of grey, there’s always a lot of talk about them playing an “unlikable” character. Is that something you thought about at all?
I was not interested in making her the traditional sense of likable. I’m aware that there are certain people who will be very angry by a woman who doesn’t need men, who is unfiltered, who is kind of a bad person and still wins. I think they’re okay with a woman being bad if she loses or she’s damaged but I think what angers some people most about my character, whether that be on stage or The Duchess, is that she does bad things and she wins. First and foremost women are expected to be nice, they’re valued on that above all else. I wasn’t really thinking about backlash from that or trying to rile anyone, I just always make work for younger people and likeminded people and women like me. I just want to empower young women or older women or single moms or anyone in a position where society tells them to be quiet. I think as long as you have good intentions and you try to be kind and your heart is in the right place, then you can be unlikable here and there if you want.

katherine ryan duchess netflix
Photograph by Simon Ridgway/NETFLIX

Tell us about the title of the show, The Duchess. What is that a nod to?
I love Meghan Markle, but we didn’t call it The Duchess for Meghan Markle. We just thought it was a beautiful way to announce to people that this was a British show and a high status woman. But the more I think about it, it’s interesting because Meghan Markle is so smart and so disruptive in the right way, and really thinks outside the box and pushes boundaries. But we now see that those are not the ingredients to make you a Duchess; what you have to do to be a Duchess is be quiet and go with the flow. So Katherine is really the opposite of what it takes to be a Duchess, and that’s cool too.

Dominican Beans (Habichuelas Guisadas)

These creamy Dominican beans, flavored with garlic, onion, cubanelle pepper, and adobo seasoning, cooked in the Instant Pot or pressure cooker, make the perfect vegetarian side or meatless main dish.

Dominican Beans over rice with aji picante on top and steak on the side.
Dominican Beans

You guys are in for a treat! When my cousins visited me a few weeks ago from the Dominican Republic, they showed me how to make these delicious Dominican beans made from scratch with dry red kidney beans. In DR, these beans are served daily in most homes. There’s no meat in these beans, so they are great for vegetarians. Of course, if you want to serve them along side some pork chops, steak or Pollo Sabroso that’s great too! For some other Latin-inspired bean recipes, try my Mexican Pinto Beans, Quick Cuban Style Black Beans, and Quick Puerto Rican Style Beans.

Is a Simple Skincare Routine Better For You (And Your Skin)?

When Into the Gloss launched in 2010, the beauty site inadvertently developed a formula for every stylized medicine cabinet photo (lovingly referred to as a “top shelfie”) that has graced Instagram since then. Each snap must include serums (at least one for each day of the week—bonus points if you know what they all do), a handful of jars of moisturizer lined up in a row and enough facial cleansers to remove the makeup of a small village each night. Maximalism took hold, and in 2019, skincare sales surpassed makeup sales for the very first time in Canada, according to market research firm NPD Group. This was to be expected, given the massive popularity of the Korean beauty multi-step routine (which encourages the use of everything from multiple cleansers to serums, creams and oils) that hit North America six years ago. Today, a quick Google search for “10-step skincare routine” yields a staggering 31 million results.

However, for every hour-long skincare regimen devotee, there’s a Marie Kondo-esque brand founder urging consumers to choose just a few high-quality products instead of amassing a vast collection—the same way one should, if possible, invest in a well-made shirt rather than fast-fashion items that will soon unravel. Due to a combination of savvier-than-ever skincare consumers, growing concerns over the environmental impact of beauty consumption and global economic instability, the once-alluring glow of shelves jammed with jars is starting to dim.

Jennifer Brodeur, the Montreal-based founder of JB Skin Guru (and facialist to Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey, among others), has always been a skincare minimalist. Brodeur worked and taught in the beauty-aesthetics industry for over 20 years before launching her brand in 2016. To keep skin healthy, she stresses the importance of just three things: sleep, proper cleansing and the use of soothing ingredients to bring down inflammation. One of the main culprits of inflamed skin? Using too many products, particularly overly aggressive exfoliants. “I was incessantly criticized for my philosophy,” says Brodeur. “When I was working at a skincare clinic, I was told by the owner that I would never succeed because I wasn’t selling enough.” But Brodeur had no interest in promoting a multi-step regimen that she wouldn’t use herself. “I’m a two-step- or three-step-max kind of gal.” Four years after its launch, JB Skin Guru has nine products in its lineup and two more in the works. “That’ll probably be it for quite some time,” she says.

The minimalist approach adopted by Madison and Matthew Ruggieri, the sibling duo behind the recently launched unisex brand OneKind, is a result of their background in men’s skincare. After launching two product lines for men, the siblings realized that those brands were also attracting a female clientele. “I think women appreciated that our collections were curated and we were only selling exactly what the consumer needed,” says Matthew. “If a male consumer doesn’t understand a product or need it on a daily basis, he’s not going to buy it.” They applied these learnings to OneKind, which launched in the fall of 2019 and currently has three products in its lineup: a retinol serum, an exfoliating mask and a nighttime moisturizer. “Every product has to have a clear place in someone’s routine; we’re never going to be a brand that has an endless scroll of products on our site,” says Madison.

Three seems to be the magic number for up-and-coming tightly curated brands. After years of suffering from cystic-acne breakouts, Neada Deters, a former communications associate at Vice and former editor at Doré, launched Lesse in 2018 once she moved from Australia to New York. During her time as an editor, she found herself interviewing dermatologists and aestheticians who spoke highly of a simple skincare regimen. Those learnings, combined with her confusing (and ultimately failed) search for good organic skincare products, led Deters to start mixing ingredients in her kitchen before she partnered with the Canadian farm that now grows and manufactures all of her products. Today, the brand sells only a serum, a mask and a cleanser, although Deters has plans to add more to the lineup, albeit slowly and steadily. Now based in L.A., Deters says she never wants “to undermine all of the amazing things our skin naturally knows how to do, like exfoliating or healing itself; instead, we’re asking how we can support it so it thrives every day.”

Jordan Samuel Pacitti, a ballet dancer turned aesthetician turned founder of the Instagram-famous brand Jordan Samuel Skin, says he often sees customers disappear for six months to a year before returning to his brand to embark on a scaled-down skin journey. “They’ll come back and say ‘I started adding in all these products and doing all these steps and now I need to reset my skin,’” he explains. To Pacitti, this is evidence that his products work: “They get tempted by other things, whether it’s a new trend or an influencer talking about a new product, and all of a sudden one new product becomes two, which becomes three.”

When it comes to elaborate multi-step routines, Pacitti believes that “inevitably, something’s going to mess up your skin.” When that happens, he welcomes his customers back with open arms. Pacitti compares his brand to that friend who’s always there for you, even when you may deserve the cold shoulder: “Whenever you’re ready to come back, Jordan Samuel Skin is here for you.” As diligent as he is reliable, Pacitti will always try to improve upon the existing 11 products in his line before creating new ones. “A lot of brands launch things that are almost redundant,” he says. “I just go back to the drawing board and reformulate.”

Camilla Hansson on the benefits of CBD Oil for menstrual cramps

It’s always exciting to speak to people who are passionate about health & wellbeing, so today’s interview with Camilla Hansson was especially exciting.

As a model and former Miss Sweden, she understands the importance of health, wellness and beauty. And the discovery that she also studied at CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine), gave Camilla a credible background as founder of Europe’s first CBD product specifically formulated for women, Camilla Organics.

Having studied nutrition from a naturopathic medicine viewpoint, she naturally turned to natural remedies to cope with her painful menstrual cramps. Visits to A&E, tests and a diagnosis of endometriosis Camilla tried various therapies but without much success.  Until a friend introduced her to CBD Oil.

CBD Oil for menstrual cramps

At the time there was little information about the product but was mainly being used for anxiety, sleep and pain.  Camilla explained “ I kept the bottle in the fridge & the next time I experienced pain I took a pipette of the CBD oil and was surprised that within 20 minutes the pain had subsided.”

Camilla wasn’t sure if it was the CBD Oil or if the pain had just passed. The next time it happened she was at College, and again within 20 minutes of taking CBD oil the pain had subsided.

She started researching the oil and decided that there was a need for a product specifically for women suffering the same painful menstrual cramps. Using her knowledge and understanding of herbs she partnered up with a leading CBD specialist to create Camilla Organics’ first product Women’s Relief. Her blend contains 15% CBD, Dong Quai, Wild Yam and a unique blend of Terpenes.

She uses THC-free Broad Spectrum CBD oil that is from organically grown hemp of the highest quality and they use third party lab testing to ensure both purity and potency.

It can be really confusing then choosing a CBD Oil, and Camilla explains “It is important to do your research and buy a product from a company that has lab reports. There are many companies offering poor quality products with little or no CBD oil, so it is important to make sure you have a high strength product from a reputable source”

Camilla Hansson CBD Oil- Jonathan Markström, Streetchic Media

How to Use Women’s Relief CBD Oil

Like most natural remedies and therapies there is an element to testing and adapting to the needs of your own body, but as a starting point for period relief use half to a full dropper of Women’s Relief under the tongue, hold for a minute then swallow.

For best results Camilla suggest that you take a few drops of the product daily for about 3 months to get the most benefits. This way you will allow for the CBD to build up in your body.

Camilla is passionate about supporting women to naturally regain control of their health and menstrual cycles while spreading awareness of how to enjoy the benefits of CBD.

Instant Pot Beef Stew

Instant Pot Beef Stew is perfect for those cool fall nights, and great when you want to whip up cozy beef stew in under an hour! Sauté the beef in the bottom of the instant pot, throw in your veggies and broth, turn it on and call it a day!

Instant pot beef stew in a white bowl.

Instant Pot Beef Stew

Gosh, if there were ever a soup that depicted cozy nights and hearty fall soups, it would be Instant Pot Beef Stew. Of course we love beef stew because it’s DELICIOUS, but we also love it because it has a little bit of everything. Beef? Check! Veggies? Check! Hearty? Check! Totally delicious??? Check check check!

While most versions of beef stew take hours to cook so the meat can tenderize, using the instant pot takes this three to four hour recipe down to a mere hour – tops. We saute stew meat in the bottom of the instant pot, and once it’s brown, cover it in big pieces of carrot, celery, onion, and potatoes.

The meat and veggies get drowned in broth, and then we will the instant pot go to town!

Ingredients in Instant Pot Beef Stew

  • Olive oil. For beef stew, I like to cook the meat in a light olive oil – canola oil also works.
  • Beef. You can use a chuck roast and cut it yourself, but I find it’s easiest to just buy stew meat already cut up and trimmed at the butcher counter.
  • Veggies. For our version of Instant Pot Beef Stew, we use the classics – carrot, onion, celery, potatoes, and peas (at the end). You could also throw in some parsnips, green beans, or pearl onions if you want to up the veggie ratio.
  • Garlic. Not much to explain here! Garlic. Always lots of garlic.
  • Tomato paste. We love to use tomato paste in our beef stew because it helps to thicken the stew. It also has a really concentrated tomato flavor, so it adds a ton of flavor.
  • Tomato puree. You could use tomato puree or canned tomatoes here. My kiddos don’t really like whole tomatoes, so I sneak them in this way. If you have canned diced tomatoes on hand, that works too!
  • Seasoning. You don’ need much in terms of seasoning – we use LOTS of salt, a few bay leaves, a little bit of Worcestershire sauce, and just a pinch of sugar.
  • Broth. You’ll want low-sodium beef stock or broth. We always use low-sodium so we can control the amount of salt that goes into our dish.

A plate full of cut up vegetables.

How to Cook Beef Stew Meat:

Beef stew meat is notoriously tough, so it’s important you give it enough time to cook. Also, we want to get as much flavor out of the beef itself, so it’s also important to sear the beef before you let it cook with the veggies and the broth. Usually this takes many hours, but since we are using the instant pot today, it’s only going to take about 35-40 minutes. Wild stuff!

How to Make Instant Pot Beef Stew:

  1. Sauté the beef. Turn the instant pot to the sauté function. Season the beef with lots of salt and pepper. Add your oil to the bottom of the instant pot and then add half of the beef. Sauté until brown. Remove and sauté the rest of the beef.
  2. Stir in tomato paste. Once the beef has cooked, add the beef you already cooked back to the instant pot. Add the beef broth and use a wooden spoon to scrape up the bottom of the pan. Stir in tomato paste, tomato puree, bay leaf, Worcestershire, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add everything else. Place the veggies on top.
  4. Cook! Put the lid on, and cook on high pressure for 30 minutes. Press the instant release button. Watch out!
  5. Thicken the stew. Add a mixture of cornstarch and beef broth to the beef stew. Turn the instant pot back to saute and whisk in cornstarch mixture. Stir until thickened. Add in peas. Let the cook until thawed. Serve with lots of fresh parsley and crusty bread! Oh! And don’t forget to season with salt and pepper.

What to Serve with Instant Pot Beef Stew:

  • Beef Stew is nothing without a little crusty bread. Try out this Miracle No Knead Bread – so delicious!
  • If you’re looking for something green and refreshing, try out this easy Greek Salad.
  • Looking for something indulgent? This Garlic Bread will hit the spot!

Cut vegetables in an instant pot.

Can I Make Beef Stew In Advance?

Yes! Instant Pot Beef Stew is a great dish to make in advance. Just make from start to finish (don’t add peas). Cool completely and store in an airtight container. When you’re ready to serve, pour the beef stew in a pot and bring to a boil. Add in peas. Cook until thawed.

You can also heat the soup individually in microwave-safe bowls. Add the peas before you microwave.

There are different styles and patterns in various colors available when you look for designer Kaftan online. If you have lighter skin, you can go for something vibrant and sprightly. If you have a dusky complexion, take up more reserved and modest colors with monochromatic prints. Large and expressive designs may look good if you have a glowing tenor and radiant tone of the skin.

Right Choice of Fabric

When you are choosing your Kaftan, you should look for the fabric that suits your skin and you are comfortable wearing. Kaftans are available in various qualities and types of fabric materials like cotton, silk, wool, and cashmere. While you buy a Kaftan dress, try it and feel the material on your skin. Check the texture and the finish of the fabric to assure yourself the piece of clothing that matches your trait of clothing like breezy, breathable, soft, dense, or lightweight.

The occasion to wear for

Kaftan can be worn in different styles and feature various couture crafts. It is no more restricted to be worn as a beach or comfort wear as over the years it has profusely blended with different styles of clothing and fashion trends. Thus, a Kaftan can be picked for different occasions and events. This gets you a wide range of attire selection that features different embroidery arts, embellishment work, elaborations, prints, vesture crafts, styles, and fusions. So, you can have clear options to discern evening parties, traditional festivities and family get-togethers.

5 ways to save time cooking (with whole foods)

One of the best predictors of long term good health is to cook as much of what you eat as possible, from scratch. The fast food and food processing industries have conveniently led us to believe that cooking is hard, time consuming and messy and that we’d be so much better off letting them cook for us or create shortcuts.

However, research has demonstrated that the less time we, as a society, spend cooking, the higher the rates of diet related illness.

Why? Because they don’t cook like we do.

Plus cooking really doesn’t have to be hard, or time consuming. Certainly the benefits of improving your health and that of your family, makes every minute you spend nourishing your family with home cooked meals worthwhile. Think of the time you spend cooking as saving you time and money with less day’s off because you or the kids are sick.

I’ve really noticed in my own family just how important cooking is for health. With my now teenage daughter becoming more autonomous, she’s gone through phases of being out with friends all the time and eating more junk and take-away then ever before. As much as she hates to admit it, even she recognises that she isn’t able to maintain the same level of health when she eats fast food (and she even picks the ‘healthy’ options generally) rather than eating at homemade meals.

She hasn’t been terribly sick, just a few unproductive or sick days from school when in the past, this was rare. She can now recognise how eating crappy food affects her short term health.

I wanted to share with you 5 ways to save time cooking with whole foods so you can get dinner on the table, week after week, and stay energised and engaged with the act of cooking at home!

Because we know, it is the best way to maintain your whole families health!

Plan your meals

Having a plan that suits your family and lifestyle is really important. There is no one fits all way to plan so find a system that suits you. You can go all out and plan all meals and snacks. However even a plan for just a few meals a week will help you to eat well much more consistently and alleviate a lot of meal time stress.

Also use your plan to shop once a week. Less time ducking down to the shops for forgotten items means more time for cooking a lovely meal.

The Well Nourished Family membership provides you with done for you and customisable meal plans to suit every families size and tastes. And best of all, every plan generates both printable and digital shopping lists to really minimise your time in the kitchen. CLICK HERE to watch me demonstrate this amazing technology.

Choose recipes you know are well tested and work

Choose recipes you know are well tested and work and don’t use unusual one off ingredients that take up space in your pantry and you’ll never use again. I take pride in all of my recipes here at Well Nourished being made from readily available ingredients, being easy to follow and always delicious.

Bulk prep meals

Make the time and space to cook and then make it count. When you are in the kitchen, consider doubling up or bulk preparing meals so that you cook once, and eat twice (or even three times). You can use your freezer for storage (so you don’t eat the same meal night after night). Check out the assortment of Freezable Meals and also Make-ahead Meal inspiration here.

In the Well Nourished Family membership we provide you with done for you Meal Prep Plans so you can cook a group of meals in a really time efficient way and head into a busy week with peace of mind that dinner is done for the week. CLICK HERE for a video example of one of our Meal Prep Plans.

Choose one pan or one pot meals

Choose one pan or one pot meals. The easiest meals to cook have simple methods NOT necessarily less ingredients. The ingredients in a meal not only build flavour, but they add a whole lot of nutritional variety. I find it really hard to design nutritionally balanced meals using say just 5 ingredients. But by keeping the method of the recipe really simple, you save time cooking, whilst still nourishing yourself and your family. My one pot slow cooked meals and the many tray bake recipes are great examples of the simplest meals about.

Try a 30 minute meal

If you haven’t planned a meal or are caught short on time, 30 minute meals (yes in the real world) are a saviour. Having a selection of really quick and easy to make meals is a must for any busy households.

I hope these tips help you to find your way into the kitchen more to nourish yourself and your family well.

These Pictures of Married at First Sight Alum Martha Kalifatidis Are Straight-Up Fire

Martha Kalifatidis, who rose to fame starring on Married at First Sight last year, where she met her partner Michael Brunelli, is not one to shy away from a tasteful nude. The influencer and presenter appears totally unashamed of showing off her body, inadvertently encouraging other women to be confident in themselves.

Her latest picture this week, of herself and Michael presumably naked and enjoying McDonald's soft-serves in bed, has received negative attention. But Martha's definitely versed in ignoring the haters, with her cheeky caption, "Life's short eat the ice cream. 🤷🏻‍♀️," summing up her subtle brand of body positivity.

In July, when #ChallengeAccepted trended globally as women posted black and white pictures of themselves celebrating women's empowerment, Martha shared her own message, along with a photo of herself in just a cardigan.

"I genuinely love lifting up women and empowering them," she wrote. "I have always strived to do so . . . even if that may be with an eyebrow pencil or a lipliner. I feel truly content and rewarded when I can make another women feel confident."

Martha spoke candidly on Instagram in June about being criticised about her weight. While she would usually be able to let go of that kind of negative feedback, another woman calling her "chubby" led her to feeling "stress, self-hatred and unhappiness" for two weeks. ⁣⁣

"So here's a 'Fuck You' to that comment," she captioned a photo of herself sitting on her bed in her undies. "A photo of me today, unfiltered, unedited and a few kilo's heavier. Knowing that a few long walks and a few salads will get me back on track. ⁣

"My message to you, and the purpose of this post, is that if you're feeling bad about the snacks you've eaten, the workouts you haven't done and the number on the scale . . . self loathing won't fix shit, trust me! ⁣

"I want you to know that putting on weight is not the end of the world, and if you have ppl in your life or on social media that have something to say about your weight they best have a set of abs or they can fuck right off!" ⁣

Martha told body+soul about her approach to people body-shaming her online in December last year: "Unless you look like Bella f*cking Hadid, then you shouldn't be commenting on other people."

She grew up when the super thin Mischa Barton and Paris Hilton were the models of attractiveness, knowing she could never meet those standards of beauty. "There is no diet to turn a 5/2 voluptuous little Greek Girl into a 5'11 waif thin supermodel.

"The advice I'd give my [younger] self is the quicker you can accept the body you've been given, the more you'll have with it."

While she admitted she wanted to make a "tweak" to her breasts, she also said she "wouldn't change a thing about [her] body now": "Sure I'd love to tone the back of my thighs, but regardless of whether I do or don't, I'll still me wearing a teeny tiny bikini all summer."

Yes, Martha! Let's celebrate her teeny tiny bikini - and even more revealing - moments!
