My Story: Jenn Harper is On a Mission to Empower Indigenous Youth, One Power Lip at a Time

Meet Jenn Harper, the founder of Cheekbone Beauty, a made-in-Canada cosmetics line of colourful lipsticks and lip glosses, plus complexion products, focused on low waste and sustainability: think biodegradable packaging and sustainably sourced ingredients. What’s more, 10 per cent of Cheekbone Beauty’s profits are donated to the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, a non-profit organization providing reconciliation-based public education, research and support to promote the safety and wellbeing of First Nations children and their families. Formerly a sales professional, the idea for Cheekbone Beauty – which was established in 2016 and puts Indigenous youth at its centre – came to Jenn in a life-changing dream. Here, the entrepreneur shares, in her own words, her brand’s ethos and how she turned past trauma and struggle into do-good triumph.

On the dream that sparked it all:

“I was a serious alcoholic for many, many years and got sober in 2014. Then, in January of 2015, I literally had a dream about making lip gloss — and I don’t dream very often. The highlight of that dream was little Indigenous girls with the rosiest little cheeks, and they were laughing and just so happy. So I jumped out of bed that night, grabbed my laptop and typed up what I now know is called a business plan (I did not know that’s what it was called back then). That was the beginning of it. I took 2015 and 2016 to learn as much as I could about entrepreneurship and the beauty business, from product development to supply chain, market research and marketing. I didn’t go to business school. I just literally read over a hundred books between those two years.

Going through this insane experience of getting sober and getting my own life together, I thought about the ways I wanted the world to work: How could I be a real force for good and for positive change? How could I take money and put it towards good causes? How can I rethink how to operate? It was an opportunity to build a business that I did not yet see in the world and incorporating all of those ideas right into the business plan. I always talk about how I wouldn’t be where I am today without all the trauma and pain in my life. I had to go through that in order to get here now. I’m a grateful, recovered addict who wants to be a good role model for Indigenous youth, for my own family, for my own children. And I want to show that you can use business as a force for good.”

On learning and growing from one’s traumatic past:

“[That dream] came after me having my own struggles and searching for a long time on why it is that my community constantly struggles. And when I learned in 2015 about the residential school system and the impact that it had, which is called transgenerational trauma, it all started to make sense. Many Indigenous families are still impacted by the residential school system — a system that tried to eradicate Indigenous people of their language and practices. Learning that was really humbling because I used to just think there was something wrong with me and something wrong with my family. It gave me a true understanding of how big of a role that played into the person I had become because of my family history, but also the opportunity to realize that change is possible for so many of us.

I want to share with Indigenous youth that, yes our lives are imperfect, yes we can make mistakes along the way, but we can overcome a lot of those traumatic experiences and turn out on the good side of it as better people. We can be better citizens, better community leaders. We can be better parents and families. That’s all possible. I want to represent Indigenous views and stories, and I realize how important it is to be vulnerable and share that part of myself because somebody who is struggling may hear your story and take something away from it. And the truth is, when I was struggling, I would listen to other people’s stories and find empowerment in them by thinking, ‘Well, if they could do that, then maybe I could too?’ That’s the whole hope with my entire brand. Like The Warrior Woman collection is ultimately this platform of incredibly inspiring, strong Indigenous women that we want our Indigenous kids to see and think: if you can see it, you can be it.”

On the importance of being able to tell your own origin stories:

“In mainstream industries, I don’t think Indigenous people have ever truly been highlighted, unless it’s an appropriated version. We see this in sports teams, in Land O’Lakes butter, even in stories like Pocahontas where nobody even got the story correct. And there is this Hollywood version of what it means to be a native person in North America. It’s unfortunate that our stories have never really been told from us, by us — the true stories. So, I’m just glad that Cheekbone Beauty gets to be a part of the storytelling.”

On helping Indigenous youth:

“We aren’t just building a brand that’s about selling lipsticks. The real power of our brand is truly about creating this space for representation for Indigenous kids and creating awareness around the unequal funding for Indigenous kids. We’re doing our part by doing what we can financially and, to date, we’ve donated just over $8,000 to The First Nations Child & Family Caring Society. And altogether we’ve donated well over $25,000 worth of products and cash to organizations as a whole that exist to improve and enhance the lives of Indigenous youth. For us, it’s really important that these kids’ education is taken care of and that people understand that they deserve an equal education, just like the rest of the Canadian kids.”

On her brand’s social media visuals:

“They are all of our community. We repost anyone who has purchased our product. We repost pictures along with community members’ thoughts around products. You’ll notice that we’ll make a comment in the caption about what shades they’re wearing, but then we let people express themselves in their own words. Our entire social media strategy is about letting people have this space to share their stories with the rest of the world.”

On the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement:

“Business has just skyrocketed. It’s become super overwhelming, and I honestly believe that the Black Lives Matter movement has played a giant role in our success. I will forever be grateful to the community members that have really propelled this and made the entire world stop and pay attention to something that should have been paid attention to far, far, far earlier. These movements also help us to make better business decisions as well, like who’s going to be working here? What does our board look like? Things that are super important. Even as an ‘awakened’ brand, we also can be learning and listening, because there’s so much more awakening to do.”

What you need to know: Atoderm is the dermatological term that refers to very dry, sensitive skin and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley-loved skincare brand Bioderma is releasing a new eye cream this month to speak specifically to the issue. Daily use of the product helps to reinforce the skin barrier on the eyes, which in turns helps to prevent skin flare-ups. The clinically tested, 3-in-1 formula works as a soothing eye contour care product, a restorative gel and a no-rinse makeup remover.

Gucci Bloom Profumo di Fiori

What you need to know: Master Perfumer Alberto Morillas has created another new scent to join the Gucci Bloom family. Gucci Bloom Profumo di Fiori uses a range of floral notes including Tuberose essence, jasmine sambac closed buds and jasmine sambac absolute, as well as ylang ylang, sandalwood and sun drenched woody notes. The result is a scent that is “like a spell,” says creative director Alessandro Michele.

L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Collection Re-Launch

What you need to know: L’Occitane is relaunching its Immortelle Divine collection this month with a new formula that contains a 30 per cent higher concentration of Immortelle (a flower from Corsica that the brand has been researching for over 20 years) to help fight the five main visible signs of aging. The collection includes the best-selling Immortelle Divine Cream and the Immortelle Divine Serum, both of which contain the breakthrough discovery that is the Immortelle Super Extract, a naturally-derived alternative to retinol that helps to enhance the structure and look of the skin.

This New Book Looks Back at the History of Statement-Making Dior Hats

The House of Dior has produced many unique and unusual hats over the years—from the first millinery of the New Look to Yves Saint Laurent’s Venetian masks to the romantic designs by Maria Grazia Chiuri—and now, a new book is cataloguing them all. Published by Rizzoli, the illustrated book titled Dior Hats: From Christian Dior to Stephen Jones features an exclusive series of photographs and text by Stephen Jones, the milliner behind the house’s hats since 1996.

Opening with a focus on hats designed by Christian Dior, the book explores the different kinds of headdresses produced by the brand under its various creative directors over the past several decades, including Gianfranco Ferrรฉ, John Galliano and Raf Simons. Jones’s texts are accompanied by drawings and images from Dior’s archives as well as exclusive new images by photographer Sรธlve Sundsbรธ.

The book was compiled for the exhibition “Chapeaux Dior! The Art of the Hat, from Christian Dior to Stephen Jones,” which was to be held at the Musรฉe Christian Dior in Granville, France, this year but was postponed due to Covid. In addition to text written by Jones, who is the artistic director of the Dior Hats exhibition, the book features contributions from the exhibition’s curator, Florence Mรผller; journalists Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni, Alexander Fury and Dean Rhys Morgan; as well as Vincent Leret, patrimony project manager at Christian Dior Parfums.

As Christian Dior himself wrote in The Little Dictionary of Fashion: “A hat is essential to any outfit. It completes it. In a way, a hat is the best way to express your personality.”

Everything You Need to Know About Selena Gomez’s Beauty Line, Rare Beauty

Update: We’re just days away from the launch of Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty line and the anticipation is reaching fever pitch – especially now that we know what products the singer-turned-beauty businesswoman will offer in said line.

According to a release, the line includes the Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation and Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer, both of which are available in a whopping 48 shades “to suit all skin tones”, as well as the Always An Optimist Illuminating Primer, Always An Optimist 4-in-1 Mist, the “first-of-its-kind” Blot & Glow Touch-Up Kit, the Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner (which was inspired by a calligrapher and contains more than 1000 individual hairs for optimal precision), the With Gratitude Dewy Lip Balm (available in eight shades), Lip Souffle Matte Lip Cream (available in 12 shades), the Positive Light Liquid Luminizer (in eight shades), the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush (in eight shades, four of which are matte and four dewy), the Brow Harmony Pencil & Gel and three tools.

Gomez was heavily involved in the creation and development of each product, and wants the line to “challenge the beauty myth of physical perfection.” Speaking of the brand, Gomez said, “These products aren’t about being someone else, it’s about being who you are, whether that’s rocking a full face of bold makeup or barely any makeup at all. Makeup is something to enjoy, it’s not something you need. I want every person to feel beautiful exactly as they are.”

As a reminder, the products officially launch in Canada on September 3, exclusively at Sephora.

Update (06/08/20): If you’ve been glued to your phones waiting for news of an official release date for Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty line, then you’re in luck because the multi-hyphenate has finally announced when the collection will be dropping. In a post shared to Instagram, Gomez wrote, “I’m SO excited to finally share that Rare Beauty will be launching September 3rd only at Sephora US, Sephora Canada, Sephora Mexico and RareBeauty.com.” She added, “I’ve had so much creating everything and can’t wait for y’all to try it all! I hope you love it as much as I do.”

The news comes a few weeks after the announcement that Gomez is launching the Rare Impact Fund, a mental health focused initiative, as part of Rare Beauty. The goal is to raise $100 million over the next 10 years, and one per cent of annual Rare Beauty sales will contribute to this amount.

Update (14/04/20): More details have come to light about Selena Gomez’s upcoming beauty line, Rare Beauty. Scheduled to launch in Sephora this summer, the line will launch with a whopping 48 shades of foundation and concealer. In a new piece for Interview magazine for which she was interviewed by friend Amy Schumer, Gomez said of the products, “It’s all very clean and easy. I wanted people to feel safe.”

She added, “I wanted to start a conversation about how you can make yourself feel great. It’s not necessarily about needing these things to make yourself feel beautiful. People of my generation have all this pressure to look a certain way, and I wanted to make a line that took away a bit of that pressure.”

Schumer then asked if the Lose You to Love Me singer could “make a mascara that doesn’t clump” to which Gomez replied, “Yes, I’ll be sure to.”

Original (05/02/20): Last year, rumours began to circulate that Selena Gomez was gearing up to launch her own beauty line after she filed trademark paperwork. Now, the pop star has confirmed they were indeed true, launching the Instagram page for her new line, called Rare Beauty, this week.

The page currently only has three posts introducing the range, however it’s message of self-acceptance and inclusivity is abundantly clear. One caption reads, “Our mission is to shape conversations around beauty, self-acceptance, and mental health. We want to help more people get access to support and services, and help people feel more authentically connected to one another and less alone in the world.”

In a video, Gomez talks about the purpose of the new line, saying, “Being rare is about being comfortable in yourself. I’ve stopped trying to be perfect. I just want to be me. I think Rare Beauty can be more than a beauty brand. I want us all to stop comparing ourselves to each other and start embrace our uniqueness. You’re not defined by a photo, a like or a comment. Rare Beauty isn’t about how other people see you, but how you see yourself.”

The singer has always been very open about her mental health. In a January interview with WSJ Magazine, Gomez said, “I had low self-esteem, and that’s something I work on continuously. But I feel so empowered because I’ve gained so much knowledge about what was going on mentally. My highs were really high, and my lows would take me out for weeks at a time. I found out I do suffer from mental health issues. And, honestly, that was such a relief. I realized that there was a way to get help and to find people that you trust. I got on the right medication, and my life has been completely changed.”

In the one minute long clip, Gomez can be seen sampling products including eyeshadow, lip colours and complexion. At one point, Gomez says, “I’m so nervous!”
