Organic September

Organic September is a month-long celebration of organic farming, food, drink, beauty products and clothes. In the face of climate change, diet related ill-health and widespread decline in wildlife, the need to change our food systems has never been greater. As more of us are seeking to make choices to minimise our impact on the planet, organic can offer a simple, trusted way to be more sustainable in our daily lives.

There are many ways people can be involved with the organic movement this Organic September, from learning more about organic and agroecological ways of producing food and sharing this knowledge with friends and family, to supporting organic farmers in local communities and learning to grow your own at home.

The Soil Association has put together a list of other small things you can try, one for each day of the September – together, when working with nature, our small changes all add up make a world of difference. 30 Ways to Join the Organic Movement

Covid-19 has shaken our complacency about where our food comes from to the core. But more than ever, citizens are appreciating the world we live in and the fragility of our existence in it.  All the research shows that people do not want to just let things return to how they were, and citizens want to make choices that will support people, animals and our environment.  The Soil Association is the UK’s leading membership charity campaigning for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use.

What is organic?

There is lots of details on the  What Is Organic and Why Organic pages on the Soil Association website.  ‘Organic’ is a farming system and method of food production built on the principles of ecology, fairness, health and care. Organic farmers take a ‘whole system’, or holistic approach, to farming, that considers the entire food system, from soils and farm animals to the health of people, nature and the planet.

Choosing organic means:

  • Supporting wildlife
  • Helping to combat climate change
  • Supporting high animal welfare
  • Enjoying food as it should be
  • Reduced exposure to pesticides

Organic Means

Supporting wildlife
  • Organic farms are havens for wildlife and provide homes for bees, birds and butterflies. On average, plant, insect and bird life is 50% more abundant on organic farms.
  • Organic farming is better for bees, there are around 75% more wild bees on organic farms
  • Organic farms are more ecologically diverse, organic farms are home to 30% more species of wildlife on average
Helping to combat climate change
  • On average, organic vegetable farms, dairy farms, and mixed farming systems use less energy than their non-organic counterparts
  • Organic farming tends to reduce energy use due to the avoidance of synthetic fertilisers
  • If Europe’s farmland all followed organic principles, agricultural emissions could drop by 40-50% by 2050, with plenty to feed the growing population healthy diets
  • Adopting nature-friendly farming along with other key changes to our food system could help keep global warming below 2°C
  • Organic soils store up to twice as much water – this makes them more resilient in a changing climate
Supporting high animal welfare
  • The Soil Association has the highest standards for animal welfare in the UK Organic standards mean that farm animals:
    1. Must have access to pasture (when weather and ground conditions permit) and are truly free-range
    2. Must have plenty of space (indoors and outdoors) – which helps to reduce stress and disease
    3. Are fed a diet that is as natural as possible
    4. Graze and forage naturally on organic pasture (grasses and other crops) where only natural fertilisers are used, and pesticides are severely restricted
    5. Must not routinely be given antibiotics.
  • Organic animals are fed a natural, organic and completely GM-free diet
  • Organic farmers always provide enough light, space and comfort to allow farm animals freedom to move and express their natural behaviours
  • Organic animals enjoy plenty of fresh air and have space to graze and roam, satisfying their natural instincts
Enjoying food as it should be
  • Organic food must be certified by law, so you can be assured that the product and ingredients come from verified sources
  • Soil Association Certification certifies over 70% of organic food in the UK, and all organic farmers and processors are inspected at least once a year. The organic logo can only be used on products that have been certified as organic by an authorised certification body. This means that the product fulfils strict conditions on how it was produced, processed and handled at every stage., This means the organic label is the best way of assuring that the food you eat has been produced to a standard you can trust
  • Wherever you see the organic symbol, you can be sure that the food has been produced to the highest standards
  • Choosing organic means that you are supporting farming practices with a more traceable production process and you’ll always know what’s in your food
Reduced exposure to pesticides
  • In organic farming, all weed killers are banned – a very limited number of naturally occurring fungicides and insecticides are permitted and their use is severely restricted
  • Soil Association organic farmers are able to use a very limited number of naturally derived pesticides like citronella and clove oil, as a last resort, under very restricted circumstances
  • Choosing organic is an easy way to limit your exposure to pesticides, herbicides (weed killers) and many additives and preservatives
  • The best way to reduce your exposure to pesticides in food is to buy organic; certified organic food, including fruit and vegetables, processed food and dairy and meat products, will, overall contain less pesticides
  • One way to reduce your exposure to pesticides is to eat more organic food

All these points are referenced here.

Organic Market

Recent data shows since January 2020, organic sales in supermarkets have seen the highest growth since December 2016. Nielsen data shows organic food & drink sales year on year growth of 6.1% – almost double the growth of non-organic food and drink products (3.2%) for the 52 weeks ending 30th May 2020. Nielsen data shows an 18.7% increase in organic sales in the 12 weeks ending 30th May, which includes 10 weeks of lockdown, compared to 14.2% increase in non-organic food and drink*

This comes at a time when external events have fast-tracked already changing shopper behaviours towards personal health, transparency and integrity. A YouGov survey commissioned by the Food Farming and Countryside Commission & The Food Foundation revealed 42% people feel the crisis has made them value food more.

These changing behaviours seem set to support the organic sector in exceeding the end of 2020 market value of £2.5billiion projected by Soil Association Certification, with the sector now on track to hit the £2.6billion mark.

Key spokesperson: Louisa Pharoah of the Soil Association said;Organic September is a brilliant opportunity for us to talk to people about the Soil Association and all the work we are doing to restore nature, health and a safe climate.  Organic farming is a whole system approach that nurtures the soil, biodiversity and our planet. The Covid-19 pandemic has meant more people appreciate where food comes from, and with the increased interest in growing veg in our gardens and home baking, there’s never been a better time to talk to people about the benefits of organic farming.”

Louisa has worked at the Soil Association since 2018 and is passionate about getting more people to choose organic to support a movement that is better for the environment

In fact, we certify almost 19 million hectares of forest around the world – that’s almost the same size as Spain!

Keep an eye out for the FSC logo on paper and wood products this FSC Friday  – it’s the hallmark of responsible forest management.

  1. Find out more about agroforestry – Our love for trees extends beyond the forests -agroforestry (combining agriculture and trees) has some amazing benefits, and it’s a common practice on organic farms! Learn why agroforestry is one vital element of sustainable farmingthat everyone’s talking about this September.

Burberry Launches Animal Kingdom Pop-Up in Vancouver

Today, Burberry is opening the first of its Animal Kingdom pop-up stores in Canada at Holt Renfrew in Vancouver.

Punctuated by large-scale sculptures of monkeys and birds of paradise, the pop-up aims to welcome customers in to the world of Burberry and its long-standing connection to the animal kingdom. Since its birth, the brand has been represented by the emblem of a knight on a horse (a choice made by founder Thomas Burberry) – a code which current chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci has built upon since joining the house back in March of 2018.

Photograph courtesy of Burberry

Most recently, Tisci brought the Animal Kingdom theme to life in the brand’s first ever bag campaign featuring Bella Hadid who transformed into a panther for the shoot. In a release, the designer said, “Animals have always been a creative obsession and signature of mine,” so it’s fitting that he would bring this vision to life in-store.

The pop-ups will house some of the brand’s signature products, including limited edition styles of each. The brand’s newest handbag silhouette, the Pocket Bag, will be on offer in the medium size in canvas with black, navy and dark green leather trims, in the mini size in canvas with orange and pink accents and in monogram-flocked colour pairings including yellow and blue, red and blue, yellow and orange and green and charcoal. The TB Bag, which was inspired by Thomas Burberry, will also be available in a variety of exclusive new colourways including smooth navy leather (in medium) and crimson and pecan (in small). There will also be exclusive colourways in the bag’s textural varieties (like quilted monogram leather, woven leather and two-tone canvas).

In addition to its bag offering (which also includes The Robin and its bucket bags), the pop-ups will also be home to a line-up of exclusive silk scarves, jewellery, leather AirPods cases, crossbody leather phone cases and compact card cases.

The Burberry Animal Kingdom pop-up officially opens in Canada today at Holt Renfrew in Vancouver, and will then travel to Holt Renfrew Ogilvy in Montreal on September 5 before landing in the brand’s standalone store on Bloor Street in Toronto on October 26, followed by its store in Toronto’s Yorkdale shopping mall on November 26.

Panzanella Salad

Panzanella Salad is a perfect marriage of summer sun ripened tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and spinach tossed together with toasted bread and a light but flavorful dressing. This light but flavor packed salad is SO GOOD, and perfect for your next BBQ, potluck or dinner tonight.

This delicate Panzanella Salad won’t weigh you down. For more light and refreshing salads like this one try Mouthwatering Watermelon Salad with Feta, Caprese Salad or Chilled Cucumber Tomato Salad.

A Panzanella Salad in a white dish with mint leaves around it and tomatoes.

What is Panzanella Salad?

Panzanella Salad a traditional Italian bread salad.  Customarily it was made with chopped stale bread, onions, cucumbers and tomatoes soaked in a flavorful vinaigrette.  Garden fresh basil added a splash of color and zest, creating the colors of the Italian flag, red, green and white.  This Panzanella Recipe is wonderful nod to the traditional salad with a little bit of a fresh twist.

Panzanella Salad is so easy and fresh you’ll wonder why you haven’t tried it before. A step away from your typical green salads it’s a bright and unique addition to any meal. Pair with a protein and fresh fruit for a filling, yet healthy meal.

Panzanella Salad Ingredients:

  • Italian Loaf: No sandwich bread here. Look for sturdy, crusty Italian or French bread, with lots of holes inside. Day old bread is perfect.
  • Olive oil: Olive oil is the oil of choice for this Italian staple
  • Italian seasoning: Look for this blend in spice isle
  • Mixed Tomatoes: Mixed tomatoes make for a more colorful and unique taste. Sub with regular tomatoes if you can’t find mixed tomatoes.
  • Red Onion: Red onions have nice kick that makes the salad irresistible.
  • Spinach: Can use basil here if you prefer
  • Cucumber: English cucumbers are a favorite in this salad
  • Red wine vinegar: Balances with the tomatoes for perfection
  • Salt and Pepper: To taste.
  • Balsamic glaze: This is optional but I love the extra zing.

How to Make a Panzanella Salad:

  1. Toast: Spread bread cubes on a baking sheet and toss with olive oil and Italian seasoning, bake at 400 for 12-15 min till nice golden brown.
  2. Combine: In a medium bowl toss the tomatoes, onion, spinach, cucumber and bread together.
  3. Whisk: In a separate bowl whisk together olive oil, red wine vinegar, and salt and pepper.
  4. Toss: Gently toss all the ingredients together and let sit for at least 20 min to meld the flavors.

The process of making a Panzanella Salad.

Salad Variations:

Panzanella Salad is very flexible, so make it to your liking.

  • Peppers: Add red, yellow or orange peppers, roast them first for extra pizzazz.
  • Tomatoes: Use cherry tomatoes or romas if you can’t find mixed tomatoes.
  • Cheese: You can add freshly grated Parmesan or add in fresh mozzarella balls.
  • More Ideas: Stir in capers or pepperoncini for zin or for a lighter onion flavor use shallots.

What to Serve with Panzanella Salad:

This is such an amazing salad it can easily be served on it’s own or as a side dish. With veggies and bread all in one dish, pairing it with a simple protein is all you need.

  • Grilled or roasted Chicken
  • Any kind of Fish or Shrimp
  • Your favorite pasta dish (especially tasty with a nice pesto or lemon garlic pasta)
  • Grilled steak

Health and Nutrition FAQs with Jess

Hi angels,

Today I’m answering some of the most common questions I get asked as a nutritionist! Hope these answers clear things up and help you on your health journey!

What are your thoughts on fasting?

There is some great research behind the 5:2 diet, or fasting in general, when it comes to longevity, blood sugar control and overall health. However, from my experience as a nutritionist, fasting is just NOT sustainable long-term.

Deprivation and restriction around food in any form always seems to backfire, leading to overeating or promoting an unhealthy relationship with food. The JSHealth philosophy focuses on nourishing your relationship with food, as the foundation of a healthy and balanced life, instead of needing fasting or other fad diets to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What do you eat every day?

This is so individual, it changes every day, and everyone will have different tastes and requirements in their daily diet. JSHealth is all about helping you to connect to your body and figure out what foods make you feel your best!

I usually make a recipe from my App each day – there are more than 600 to choose from so there’s always plenty of variety! Other than that, my diet changes each day!

The JSHealth App and my 8-Week Program gently teach you how to nourish your body in the best way for YOU.

What are your thoughts on collagen?

At JSHealth, we believe in ingredients backed by science.

There is some good research supporting the use of marine collagen, in particular:

Marine sources of collagen are far better absorbed than other forms of collagen, in particular hydrolysed marine collagen, which provides the cleanest, most easily absorbed source of collagen we could! Hydrolysed collagen has undergone hydrolysis, making it easier for your body to absorb, and therefore maximising its potential benefits! It’s the most effective way to boost collagen production.

Marine collagen is also the more ethical, sustainable alternative to bovine collagen (extracted from beef processing). It has a smaller particle size, making it even more readily absorbed by your body, and therefore more powerful!

What does your exercise routine look like?

I exercise 4-5 times per week in a very balanced way. I work out in ways that I LOVE. Exercise for me is about my mental health and nourishing my body, so I’ll decide on what movement I feel like doing when I wake up, based on my energy levels and how I’m feeling. I often follow the Movement guide in the JSHealth App, and also love taking rest days each week – rest days are just as important as exercise days!

What vitamins do you take?

I swap it up depending on what my body needs! I always take my JSHealth Foundations vitamins: our Gut Health + Immunity probiotic, Magnesium , AM + PM multivitamin and Fish Oil. I am also currently taking Detox + Debloat after indulging more than usual lately. This helps me feel comfortable and supports my liver detoxification processes.

Do you prefer juicing or smoothies?

I like both for different reasons.

I make smoothies as a way to get all my macronutrients in each morning. I find smoothies also energise me and keep me full. I’ve been loving the Cinnamon Scroll smoothie found on the back of my Cinnamon Scroll Protein + Probiotics tub!

Juices are also a great way to boost your nutrient intake, and I aim to have one veggie juice per day!

Do you drink alcohol?

Absolutely, in moderation. I love wine! I drink natural, preservative-free wine without added sulfates. I limit myself to 2-3 drinks at a time, so I’m not overdoing it.

How can you heal your gut?

This takes time and patience!

Focusing on a diet rich in whole foods, and limiting your intake of processed foods, sugar and artificial sweeteners is a great starting point. If it helps you, you could also look at reducing gluten, if it seems it doesn’t agree with your gut.

Taking a daily probiotic and reducing stress can also make a huge difference to your gut, as can adding some gut-loving vitamins to your daily routine. I love the JSHealth Skin + Digestion and Detox + Debloat formulas.

Removing chewing gum and soda from your diet is also important for looking after your gut.

Rosalía Wears Mikhael Kale in First MAC Cosmetics Lipstick Campaign

Grammy Award-winning artist Rosalía has been named as the newest Viva Glam Ambassador for MAC Cosmetics today, launching her own lipstick as part of the collaboration. And in the striking campaign imagery, the singer can be seen wearing a red dress by Canadian designer Mikhael Kale.

Speaking with FASHION about dressing Rosalía for the campaign, Kale said it was “a dream come true to work this team.” As for the inspiration, he said, “It was inspired by Rosalía, of course, the Viva Glam shade and volume. Volume and texture were the themes.” The designer, who was approached by stylist Patti Wilson to build out the looks for the campaign, is also a “massive fan” of the singer, making it all a very natural fit. “Rosalía is incredibly rare – her music is so steeped in tradition yet it’s relevantly modern. She has taken traditional Catalan flamenco to pop mainstream which is not an easy thing to do,” he tells us.

The 27 year-old Spanish singer joins the likes of Winnie Harlow, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus in the role, which she describes as “an honour.” She adds, “I feel very grateful and honoured to be a part of a campaign that is helping the world we are living in. It is also my goal and very important to me to help MAC spread awareness about the health and rights for women and girls. My team is made up of women, and I feel like it’s very important that we always try to empower more women.”

In her first-ever beauty partnership, Rosalía worked with MAC to create a brand new vibrant orangey-red shade, called VG26, inspired by one of the brand’s most iconic colours. “I have always been very excited about red, it’s one of my favorite colours. It represents strength and flamenco culture. Flamenco has always been connected to red and I have always loved Ruby Woo,” she says.

MAC’s director of makeup artistry Baltasar González Pinel is equally enamoured with the shade, saying in a release, “The incredible charisma, energy, and strength of Rosalía is the perfect incarnation of this vibrant, saturated red. Taking its roots in flamenco, Rosalía’s art mixes genres and emotions — it takes risks, it is full of generosity, it is pure brilliance.”

As with all Viva Glam shades, 100 per cent of the sales from the lipstick go to the MAC Viva Glam Fund. It will be available for purchase from September 24 at MAC counters and online.
