Here’s What Meghan Markle Talked to Gloria Steinem About

Today marks 100 years since women were granted the right to vote in the United States with the 19th Amendment, and to honour the historic milestone, women’s empowerment organization Makers invited two trailblazing women to sit down in conversation: Meghan Markle and Gloria Steinem.

Filmed outdoors, with six feet between them, Markle and Steinem had a wide-ranging conversation about women’s rights, voter suppression, feminism and more. Of course the two discussed Kamala Harris, who recently made history as the first woman of colour to run on a major party Presidential ticket. “That’s exciting,” said Steinem, in a sentiment echoed by Markle as well:

“I’m so excited to see that kind of representation. You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity. As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see. And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world?”

The Duke and Duchess’ choice to step back from royal life has afforded Markle the opportunity to speak out about issues close to her heart. Over the past few months, she has given numerous speeches about racial justice, women’s equality, and her own decision to cast a vote in the upcoming US election.

“If you don’t vote you don’t exist,” said Steinem. “It’s the only place where we are all equal: in the voting booth.”

The two also touched upon the importance of not just women but also men identifying as feminists. “Like my husband,” said Markle. “I love that when he just came in he said, ‘You know that I’m a feminist too, right Gloria?! It’s really important to me that you know that.’… And I look at our son and what a beautiful example that he gets to grow up with a father who is so comfortable owning that as part of his own self-identification. That there’s no shame in being someone who advocates for fundamental human rights for everyone, which of course includes women.”

Can You Gain Weight From Eating Too Little?

There’s a risk you might read only one sentence and then leave this page, but it’s worth the risk to make sure this point is clear: you will not gain weight from eating too few calories.

If there’s nothing else you learn from this post, let it be that. But, there’s so much more that explains why (and how) under-eating can seemingly lead to weight gain. 

One of the hardest parts of dieting — which happens to almost everyone — is that moment where you get frustrated with weight loss and you try to reduce calories, even more, to make the scale drop lower again.

And what happens? You appear to be gaining weight.

It’s incredibly frustrating and you insist your body must be broken, or maybe it’s the gluten…or dairy…or artificial sweeteners that are making you fat. But, artificial sweeteners are not to blame, and your body isn’t broken.

3 Reasons You Gain Weight (When You Least Expect It)

So what’s going on? Precision Nutrition outlined many reasons why it seems like under-eating can lead to weight gain, even though it’s not the case.

In our experience with online coaching clients, we’ve seen everything. But, when it comes to weight loss, there are three common reasons you might continue to struggle with weight loss, even if it seems like you’re doing everything right. 

All of them, ultimately, deal with the ways that it’s easy to misunderstand calories. As we already mentioned, you can’t under-eat your way to weight gain. But, you can appear to be under-eating and still gaining weight.

We want to make sure you can easily identify all of the sneaky ways you can be tricked into following a diet that only leads to added frustration (and a scale that won’t move).

Foods With Hidden Calories

Whether you’re a dieting pro or don’t know the difference between a carbohydrate and protein, hidden calories suck and they are everywhere. The Precision Nutrition article shared the following example, which we’ve witnessed hundreds of times:

I once had a client discover he was using ten tablespoons of olive oil — 1200 calories — rather than the two tablespoons — 240 calories — he thought he was using in his stir-fry. Oops.

It’s frustratingly simple for hidden calories to pile up quickly day-over-day, and week-over-week, and that’s all it takes to keep you in a plateau or even gain weight, despite your best efforts. 

Rather than worrying about counting calories, it’s important to easily recognize where most hidden calories are typically found. 

See the graphic below, so you can think twice when you eat. What makes all of these hidden-calorie foods so difficult is that they are calorically dense. That means, even if they are healthy for you (which several of them are), just a small serving packs a big punch of calories, which is why it’s so simple to eat much more than you thought.

How Much Is A 2,000-Calorie Diet

Because very few of us spend our time measuring and weighing food (and rightfully so), it can be shocking to learn just how much we underestimate the number of calories we consume a day.

And the research backs it up. On average, people will underestimate their caloric intake by 30 percent, and sometimes they can estimate by as much as 45 percent. That makes a big difference.

And, to be fair, a lot of people will make it seem like this is an education issue, but even pros can’t tell how much food is in a meal. Case-in-point:

A few years ago Dr. Berardi (JB, as he’s known around here) went out to eat with some friends at a well-known restaurant chain. He ordered one of their “healthier” meals that emphasized protein, veggies, and “clean” carbs. Then he finished off dinner with cheesecake. Curious about how much energy he’d consumed, he looked it up.

Five. Thousand. Calories.

I’ve had the same issue. And it can be minor things. Like how my “1 spoonful” of Justin’s Maple Almond Nut Butter is closer to eating half a jar, but I could count 1 spoonful. You might not keep track, but your body does.

Calories-In, Calories-Out Is Confusing 

Yes, this law of thermodynamics is still the #1 determinant of weight loss or gain. But what counts as “calories in” or “calories out” is not that simple.

For instance, all of the following factors can influence your “calories in” equation: the composition of your meals (protein, carbs, fats), your body type, the amount of muscle/amount of body fat, hormones, genetics, your environment, how you slept last night, levels of stress, and much more.

Let’s just take one small example. When you eat a meal, each type of food has a different “thermic effect of food” or TEF. This is the rate at which your body metabolizes a meal. Or, in other words, it’s how many additional calories you’ll burn when you eat a specific food.

Protein has the highest TEF, which ranges from 25 to 35 percent.

Comparatively, carbs are only 6 to 8 percent, and fats are the least metabolically active with a TEF of about 3-5 percent.  

That means if two people each eat a 500-calorie meal, but one person has more protein and the other person has more fat, the “calories-in” model will look different for each individual, even if they are having the exact same number of calories.

All of which is to say, many factors matter in determining how your body stores (and burns) calories. So, when frustration kicks in, don’t give up on yourself, don’t try to be perfect, and remember that there’s no use in trying to outsmart the system. 

It’s not that we’re lying (though we can sometimes deceive ourselves, and others, about our intake). More than anything, it’s that we struggle to estimate portion sizes and calorie counts. This is especially difficult today when plates and portions are bigger than ever. And energy-dense, incredible tasting, and highly brain-rewarding “foods” are ubiquitous, cheap, and socially encouraged.

Instead, search for a diet you think you can follow. And when you start following it, add checks and balances to keep you accountable, and support to remove the need for “perfection.” And then other systems that ensure you won’t be overeating without your own knowledge.

Bella Hadid Fronts Burberry’s First Ever Bag Campaign

Today, Riccardo Tisci has unveiled the first ever bag campaign for the house of Burberry, showcasing the brand’s newest signature handbag, the Pocket Bag. The new campaign – shot before COVID-19 social distancing measures were in place – highlights the new silhouette in a series of snaps featuring Bella Hadid and shot by Inez and Vinoodh.

The campaign was inspired by the Burberry Animal Kingdom and in the images, Hadid can be seen posing alongside various big cat figures. On choosing her for this campaign, Tisci said, “Animals have always been a creative obsession and signature of mine, and it was so amazing to see Bella bring this to life as the panther. She has this fierce power and raw femininity that perfectly embodies the animal spirit.”

Speaking of the shoot, Hadid – for whom this shoot marked the second time she has fronted a campaign for the brand – said in a release, “I absolutely loved shooting this campaign, letting my inner animal spirit run free. I felt we were really capturing that feline energy and power.” Inez and Vinoodh echoed the sentiments, remarking that “Bella translated the feline qualities beautifully” and that animalistic movements “are always inspiring as a starting point for a photograph [because] it gives a very unusual body language to the shot.” Global beauty director Isamaya Ffrench says Inez showing Bella “how to walk like a panther” was a “highlight” of the “fun” shoot.

The Pocket Bag was first introduced as part of Tisci’s A/W19 collection for the brand and its design was inspired by an archival Burberry handbag. The updated version of the bag has a front pocket and leather taping, and is finished with contrast topstitching and hand-painted edges. The structured tote, which features a reinforced top handle, as well as a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap, is available in various colourways (including canvas and leather in reference to the brand’s equestrian heritage) and three sizes (mini, medium and large). Prices start at $1,350.

The campaign comes just weeks ahead of the brand’s planned Spring 2021 show in London. Back in June, Tisci confirmed Burberry would hold a physical runway presentation but that there would be no public audience present.

Are you thinking about a sea change? Whether you’re relocating from abroad or another part of Thailand, Hua Hin makes good sense. Why? Because this charming seaside city has a lot of wonderful things going for it. Before you jump in and purchase a new luxury condo for sale in Hua Hin, let’s discuss some of the finer points associated with this popular vacation and retirement spot.

Backstory

Once a quiet fishing village, Hua Hin has gone from strength to strength over the past few decades. The area first gained notice as a beach getaway spot when the Royal Family built their summer palace there in the 1920s. As it’s located within a few hours’ driving distance of Bangkok, boasts year-round tropical temperatures and is surrounded by lush national parks, it quickly became a popular destination for Bangkokians. 


As it only boasts a ‘permanent’ population of 90,000, this sleepy seaside town has managed to maintain its laid back and casual air, unlike other more notorious beach destinations in the Land of Smiles (yes, we’re talking about you Pattaya and Phuket!).

Although small in scale, Hua Hin is still a cosmopolitan city in terms of look and feel, boasting an array of Western-style services and amenities. From its mega shopping malls and outdoor markets to movie theatres, vineyards, water parks, gourmet supermarkets, international hospitals, global restaurants and golf courses, the city has pretty much any and everything you could desire. Having said that, it’s still easy to find a quiet beach hideaway all to yourself.

Interested? Let’s look at the last three pieces of the puzzle: Climate, Transport, Living.

Climate

For many people, especially those relocating from cooler climates (aka Europe and North America), what they want to know most about Hua Hin is: what’s the weather like? Well, we can assure you it’s quite lovely.

Year-round the daytime temperature averages 29-34°C, with the sea providing a nice breeze as well. Hua Hin has a tropical climate, split between dry and rainy seasons. 

Hua Hin kicks the year off with the dry/cooler season, running from December to mid-March. The rainy season then kicks in and lasts from June through October. In truth, Hua Hin is one of the driest areas of Thailand; when the rains do come, they are usually just an afternoon storm for a few hours, coming every few days. The showers should not put you off moving here; with adequate planning and a well-stocked fridge, they are an enjoyable pastime.

Transport

Hua Hin lies just 120 miles south from Bangkok and can be reached by car, bus and train. The drive typically takes 3-4 hours depending on traffic. There is also a special express bus that goes straight to Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Onward travel by bus and train to the south is possible too, including such destinations as Phuket and Malaysia, Thailand’s nearest southern neighbour.

Hua Hin does boast a small international airport as well, but at present, it only has flights to specific cities around Central Thailand and Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia.

Getting around Hua Hin itself is relatively easy thanks to a plethora of taxis, buses (songthaews) and tuk-tuks that ply the main road. Alternatively, consider renting or buying your own care, an inexpensive and convenient option for long-term stays. If you don’t want to drive yourself, a driver can be hired for an affordable monthly fee.

Living

Many expats live very comfortably on as little as $USD 2,000 (THB 63,000) a month. This is based on an individual renting a two-bedroom house or condominium (apartment). This would cover eating out a few times a week, buying groceries, entertainment/sporting activities (aka round of golf or movies once a week), transportation and miscellaneous costs, such as medication or clothing.

Housing options run the gauntlet from luxurious beachside villas and downtown apartments. Drive a few kilometres out of town, and you’ll also find safe and spacious gated housing communities (aka ‘Moo Baan’). No matter your preference, whether you reside in a new luxury condo for sale in Hua Hin or a grand estate, you’re sure to love living in this tropical paradise.

Roasting is one of the most delicious ways to cook fresh tomatoes. It adds brightness and balance to any main dish. With a hint of garlic and cheese these juicy-sweet roasted tomatoes are endlessly versatile. You can top pizza, pasta, sandwiches, soups and wraps with these amazing little gems.

The heating  process enhances the nutritional value of tomatoes since it increases the main antioxidant, lycopene, which benefits have been linked to heart health, skin health and protection against certain kinds of cancers.

Parmesan Tomato Ingredients:

These ingredients are already in your pantry and ready to make roasted tomatoes. All ingredients are tossed together and baked. Creating a delicious side dish or add on to many more recipes to come. The possibilities are endless!

  • Roma Tomatoes: Even out of season tomatoes will roast up beautifully
  • Olive Oil: Avacado oil is another great roasting oil
  • Italian Seasoning: Different seasonings can be substituted to fit your main dish
  • Garlic: Crushing your garlic will impart the most flavor and aroma
  • Parmesan cheese: Try Romano cheese for a stronger flavor

How to Roast Tomatoes:

Simply slice, toss and roast tomatoes for the perfect blended side dish. These are so easy to make with fresh tomatoes straight from the garden.

  1. Slice: Keep tomatoes the same size for even roasting
  2. Toss: Gently toss the seasonings and cheese with the tomatoes careful to mash them
  3. Roast:  Putting them in a single layer ensures consistency in roasting

How to Use Them:

The possibilities are endless! Beside a simple side, serve them as an appetizer piled on top of toast or crostini with a drizzle of pesto and mozzarella. Blend them up to use as a quick spaghetti sauce, or soup base. Chop them up to use in salads, pastas and to had zing to roasted vegetables.

Which Kind of Tomatoes are Good for Roasting?

Just about any variety of tomatoes can be roasted; Some good candidates are:

  • Large vine tomatoes. These are a fan favorite for roasting because they are inherently sweeter, choose ones with a thin skin and similar in size.
  • Roma tomatoes: Meatier texture, and fewer seeds and water to deal with make them perfect for sauces and roasting
  • Cherry or grape tomatoes. Can be roasted whole and perfect for appetizers.

How Long do Roasted Tomatoes Last?

Another beautiful thing about roasted tomatoes is that they will keep well for a good while. Bring them to room temperature before storing. The idea of stocking up on summer tomatoes and roasting several batches to freeze to use during the winter months is one I love!

  • In the fridge: Store in a tight-lid mason jar with their juices in the fridge for 3 to 5 days.
  • In the freezer: Transfer to freezer-safe bags or freezer-safe containers and freeze.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice the tomatoes in half or about 1/2 inch in thickness. In a medium sized bowl add the tomatoes, olive oil, Italian seasoning, garlic and Parmesan Cheese. Toss to coat.
  • On a baking sheet or 9x13 inch pan, place the tomatoes in a single layer. Roast in the oven for 20-30 minutes until the skin starts to soften. Garnish with fresh chopped basil if desired.
