Toronto-based Brand Zvelle is Opening a New Store Space Next Week

After five years in business, footwear and accessory company Zvelle continues to grow. In addition to launching three new shoe styles over the summer, the label that was founded by Elle AyoubZadeh–the Toronto-based entrepreneur who formerly worked in the world of finance–will open the doors of its new, permanent store/studio/event space next week.

“The more you appreciate your craft, the more you put your sweat, blood and tears into it,” says AyoubZadeh. As we spoke, she was anxiously awaiting a shipment of Zvelle’s most recent design, a go-anywhere unisex sandal named “Firenze” (the Italian name is a tribute to the craftspeople Zvelle works with to create its products). “Even before the pandemic hit, I was thinking of diversifying the choices we offer our customers, and looking at [our] habits. Where are we going [and] what are we wearing,” she says.

These questions led AyoubZadeh towards the ideation of two other styles that were launched in recent months–a glam high-heeled satin sandal and metallic slip-on flat, both priced in consideration of the current economic climate. “It was a good time for us to go full-force into things that we believe in,” says AyoubZadeh. “[They’re] priced to be respectful to the environment we’re in.”

Added value is given to each Zvelle purchase by way of a ‘Walk How You Want’ reusable shopping bag (it’s the brand’s motto); you’ll also receive one after making a purchase at the soon-to-be-opened Zvelle boutique located in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood. “It’s not just going to be your typical shoe store,” AyoubZadeh, who designed the interior herself, notes. “I see it as a place of culture for our customers and community.”

She hopes that once quarantine restrictions ease that in-store speaking events can commence, adding to the intimate and unique storytelling that Zvelle currently offers online. One of its most recent ‘In Conversation’ posts features teenage ballerinas Kennedy George & Ava Holloway; the pair’s protest moment went viral as they were photographed in front of a Confederate statue in Richmond, Virginia wearing their tutus and pointe shoes.

“They are our youngest ever subjects,” says AyoubZadeh, who came by images of the pair as they were shared across social media. “I looked up the photographer, Marcus Ingram, who had started to sell the prints. I bought a couple for my own personal collection because it’s such a historic moment…. The beauty these two young leaders [introduced] by bringing their art form to a protest. They’re only 14, but they projected such maturity.”

It’s these kinds of impactful subjects that interest AyoubZadeh when it comes to branded content. “As a company, our mission is to modernize the way women and their stories are portrayed in fashion,” she says. “We want to share stories that people perhaps don’t expect from a fashion brand.”

AyoubZadeh likely gravitates towards compelling perspectives because she possess one herself. From deriving the inspiration to make each day count from her developmentally disabled brother to Zvelle’s donation of shoes to frontline workers during COVID-19 crisis, she exemplifies a new kind of entrepreneurialism; one that unifies soul with success.

“What is it that drives me, and why am I building Zvelle,” she says of what she asks herself while continuing to evolve her brand. “To me, it’s always been about more than putting beauty into the world. I want to have some impact and relevance [and] I want that positive change to outlast me when I’m not here.”

In addition to understanding the potency of philanthropy and the amplification of unique stories, AyoubZadeh is also keenly aware of the impact her work has on those who make Zvelle’s pieces. “It’s a very personal business,” she says. “I look into the eyes of the craftspeople who are making my products, and they look into my eyes.” The close relationship she has with her factories means that she was determined to start producing product as soon as she was able to. “We decided to honour our commitments because our factories were waiting for us to pay the bills and support their families,” she explains. And she adds that now more than ever, it’s crucial for consumers to “vote with [their] dollars and [their] voice”, because makers depend on it.

Though COVID-19 continues to present challenges to every brand–and, determined as she is, AyoubZadeh notes that she’s not unaffected by the pressures the fashion world faces–the uncertainty seems to spur her on even more resolutely. “The main thing this global crisis taught me is how fortunate we are to have our health,” she says. “I’m a person that just goes twenty-four seven. I’ve always been like that all my life. I don’t think I can change that…. People are counting on me to do my job so they can live their lives. But it also made me think that we’re trying to do something–we’re here to challenge the way women are portrayed. Maybe some days we sell shoes, and maybe some days we don’t.” No matter the case, with this ethos in mind, AyoubZadeh will always be on the right path forward.

Crossbody Bags Were the Accessory of Choice for Men at Copenhagen Fashion Week

Copenhagen Fashion Week wrapped for the SS21 season last week – but not before bringing a healthy serving of seasonal style inspo via the streets. From floaty dresses to leather separates that welcome in fall, statement T-shirts, chic looks that paired well with bicycles and more, there was no shortage of Pinterest board-worthy style. Accessories were key, too – particularly for men, with many of the attendees opting for cool crossbody bags to complement their patterned tees across the three-day event.

Crossbody bags are at once practical and stylish – plus, in the COVID-era world we’re living in right now, they free up your hands to navigate remote door openings and secure your mask quickly when you’re heading indoors. Plus, they work for all occasions. Opt for a technical fabric for daytime or sporting activities, or take a more fashion-forward approach with a boxy metallic shape. Looking to dress things up slightly? A grained leather variety will add a level of polished ease to any look.

Apple Bread

Full of fall flavor this deliciously sweet Apple Bread with hints of seasonal spices is a perfectly tender bread. Each bite is packed with chunks of apple with hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Make this your new fall favorite indulgence.

Apples are in season and so delicious during the fall season. Try this Cinnamon Apple Bread, Caramel Apple Slab Pie or Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls for more delicious apple recipes.

The Best Apple Bread Recipe

Fall baking is one of my absolute favorite times to be in the kitchen. It’s Aimee Mars and preparing all the seasonal baked goods that fill my kitchen with warm and spicy scents are some of the most heartwarming. Just when the apples come into season I always have to prepare a batch of this delicious apple bread.

This really is the best apple bread recipe with its simplicity and super soft texture. Spread some creamy butter over a slice of warmed bread and you’ll be in fall heaven.

What Are the Best Apples for Making Apple Bread?

When baking it’s best to choose a tart and crisp apple version instead of a sweet one. This helps to balance the flavor so the apple bread isn’t overly sweet. The best options are Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. These apples can be found year-round too if you’re looking to make this bread outside of the fall season.

Can You Freeze Apple Bread?

Yes. In order to freeze the bread let it cool completely before wrapping it in plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or a freezer bag. If using foil or plastic wrap double wrap it to ensure no air gets in.

Do the Apples Have to be Peeled?

Yes. Unfortunately, the peel will begin to separate from the apple during the baking process that will not only create air pockets but also an unappetizing texture. To peel the apples quickly I prefer to use a potato peeler and then just slice them into chunks using a knife.

Slices of apple bread next to loaf.

Ingredients in Apple Bread:

The simple ingredients in this apple bread recipe are all pantry staples and ones you likely already have on hand. I recommend stocking up on all of them because they’re common ingredients in many delicious fall recipes.

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Spices: cinnamon and nutmeg
  • Baking Soda
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Eggs
  • Oil
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Apples

How to Make Apple Bread:

This deliciously decadent bread is super simple to prepare and will make your kitchen smell like fall. Follow these simple steps to prepare 2 loaves.

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 350ºF and grease a 9×13 loaf pan and cover with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl whisk the flour, sugar, spices, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together until well combined.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients: Whisk the eggs, oil, and vanilla together in a large bowl until smooth. Pour the dry mixture into the wet and use a spoon to combine (the mixture will be thick). Fold the chopped apples into the batter.
  4. Cook: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and place in the oven to bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Tips For Making the Best Apple Bread:

  • Once you’ve prepared the batter place it immediately in the prepared pan and then bake it. Letting the batter stand for a bit can sometimes cause the cooked bread to not rise all the way.
  • Don’t overmix the wet ingredients. Once the ingredients appear to be combined stop whisking them and move on to the next step. Over mixing can cause the bread to be too dense and heavy.
  • Be careful to not underbake your bread. Each oven has it’s own temperature settings so make sure to test the center with a toothpick. If it comes out clean then it’s ready, if not place it back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Try to avoid opening the oven until you’re sure it’s fully baked. Sometimes a draft can cause the bread to fall if it’s not close to being done.

Options For Adding a Topping:

  • Vanilla Glaze: In a small bowl whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 1 to 2 tablespoons (depending on how thick you want it) of heavy cream. Pour over the bread once it’s cooled.
  • Cream Cheese Frosting: Place 1/2 cup (1 stick) of unsalted butter at room temperature, 8 ounces of softened cream cheese, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 4 cups of powdered sugar into a mixer and combine until smooth. Spread a thick layer over the bread after it’s cooled completely.
  • Cinnamon Sugar: Place 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon in a small bowl and stir to combine. Sprinkle the mixture over the top of the bread before placing it into the oven.
  • Cinnamon Apple Butter: This simple spread will take this bread to the next level!

Men’s Fall Fashion Trends: A Guide for Indian Outfits

Men’s Fall Fashion Trends: A Guide for Indian Outfits

Looking for the next hot look for you this fall? Here are some of the trending Indian-style outfits for 2020 for men, from casual to formal.

Since 2010, the Indian-American population in the US has increased by over 50%. This is an amazing thing- more people immigrating to the US means more opportunities to share rich cultural practices, beliefs, traditions, and, of course, fashion.

While there are a huge number of men’s fall fashion trends in the US, wearing Indian-inspired outfits is a great way to stand out. You can still pay homage to these American trends when you wear these outfits, but they’re perfect for expressing your individuality and love for your culture (or the appreciation of the Indian culture being shared with you).

Here, we’re going to look at some of the best ways to boast Indian-inspired outfits in 2020, so read on to ensure that you look amazing!

Bold Colors

This year, bold colors are all the rage in men’s fashion. This is the case both in the US and in India.

Whether you want to appear warm and inviting with a deep crimson or cool and aloof with ocean-blue hues, there is an outfit for you. When you order an imported Jaquard Nawabi, you make sure that you get the highest quality fabrics and the richest, most authentic colors.

You can choose to get these Nawabis in red and black as well as in blue and black. There are other outfits in green, luminescent gold, and even bright pink. You can select any color that goes best with the rest of your wardrobe, but there’s no pressure to match with outfits that are currently in your closet. Any Indian-style outfit that you select has options for ordering matching shoes, trousers, and turbans, so you’ll be covered all around.

Amazing Patterns

In addition to choosing colors that pack a punch, you also will want to express yourself through various clothing patterns. Luckily, Indian clothes are big on having loud and detailed patterns on every article of clothing. Even outfits that are made up of largely one hue feature subtle patterns. This is a result of both the designer’s vision and the quality of the textiles that the clothes are made from.

You can purchase Sherwanis and Indo-Western outfits that feature a wide variety of patterns. Dots, diamonds, coin-shaped adornments, and even masculine floral patterns are options that you have to choose from. This is a great way to show off that you have both a strong and sensitive side and to feel confident in unique and classy clothing.

Sherwani Styles

If you’re looking for an Indian-inspired outfit that will make you look handsome on both formal and casual occasions, a Sherwani is an awesome idea. These long jackets are made from a variety of high-class materials, including silk and jaquard.

Some of the best Sherwanis feature brocade patterns and silk accents. You can select a pattern that you feel best expresses your personality and favored aesthetic.

Sherwanis are associated with formal events in Indian culture, but you can also wear them casually if you want to appear classy and stylish for a first date or dinner party. If you want to look more casual, you can get a Sherwani that features one solid color silk and has accents around the cuffs and buttons that go up the body. The colors on these Sherwanis are just as bright as those on brocade styles.

When it comes to fashioning a cohesive outfit with your Sherwani, you may want to get matching shoes and other accessories when you place your order. If you’re a jewelry guy, you might also consider wearing a single string of pearls or some silver earrings with your apparel. And don’t forget the cufflinks!

Indo-Western Outfits

Indo-Western outfits blend the best things about Indian fashion with elements of western fashion. This includes styles from the UK, greater continental Europe, and the United States.

Many of these outfits are meant to look like western suit jackets, but with a twist: traditional Indian brocade patterns. These outfits are a great way to look unique when heading to an event that necessitates a suit.

Since asymmetry is one of 2020’s biggest fashion trends for both men and women, you might want to think about getting an asymmetrical Nawabi jacket. These go down much lower on the right leg than they do on the left leg, which gives you a modern and masculine look that’s sure to turn heads. You can get these asymmetrical jackets in many colors including black, blue, red, and gold, so there’s something for everyone!

Indo-Western outfits are perfect for pairing with both Indian and western-style accessories. This means that traditional Indian turbans will look great with them, but you can also boast an Englishman’s traditional top hat and look great. If you’re going for something a bit more casual, you can forgo the headwear altogether and instead wear jewelry from both continents. This is a great way to show off both the Indian and western sides of your style.

More Men’s Fall Fashion Trends

While there are lots of ways that you can be on top of 2020’s best trends, wearing an Indian-inspired outfit is one of the best. They’re classy, perfect for every occasion, and sure to turn heads and ensure that others know how unique you are.

Now that you know the best men’s fall fashion trends, it’s time to get started! Contact us with any lingering questions that you might have on the styles and clothing types that we offer. Types of Occasion and What to Wear: Indian Fashion Guide

Types of Occasion and What to Wear: Indian Fashion Guide

Looking for a specific look for your next party or gathering? Here are some simple tips for picking an outfit for men to suit any occasion.

Though the ‘women love clothes shopping’ stereotype is prevalent in most societies worldwide, you gentlemen shouldn’t laugh just yet. Recent studies show that men tend to spend about $10 more each month on clothing and accessories than women do.

While this may be surprising, there’s nothing to be ashamed of! Being a man of style is a great thing for many reasons, and no one can judge you for wanting to look your best. One of the greatest ways to get the most out of your money is to look at Indian-inspired styles. They’re a great way to show off your cultural love and good taste.

Additionally, there are Indian men’s clothes for every occasion, so you’ll never be left in the dust. Here, we’re going to talk about many types of occasion and what to wear to these events, so read on to ensure that you look your best!

Casual Clothing

When you’re going out with friends or headed off on a first date, it’s important that you have some well-made casual clothing to wear. Looking overly stiff and formal will be off-putting for those around you, but you also don’t want to wear sweatpants all the time and have others believe you to be sloppy.

There are many ways that you can solve this problem. Sometimes a sweater and nice jeans will do the trick, and polo shirts are every man’s best friend. However, these outfits aren’t always the best option- you won’t stand out from others when wearing them. The mass-produced textiles are usually also pretty low-quality and the cuts are subpar.

You won’t have this problem when you buy imported Indian clothing! Not only will your outfit stand out and make you memorable, but your outfit will be of the highest quality. You can choose from knee-length jackets in bold, masculine colors like gold and red. These are perfect for wearing over a pair of black jeans and pairing with the matching shoes sold with the jacket.

Relaxing at Home

If you’re like most people, you like to kick back at home to read or watch Netflix at the end of a long day. 24% of US workers also work from home on any given day, so to say that time spent at home is critical to most men’s lifestyle is a vast understatement!

You can get extremely comfortable Kurta pajamas for men from our online shop. The soft silken materials that the nightwear is made from is sure to have you relaxing in luxury. You’ll be excited to take off your professional outfit and curl up in these pajamas, so make sure that you order a pair as soon as possible!

While they are technically pajamas, the fine materials that these outfits are made from make them okay to wear when entertaining at home. They also are fine to wear to casual restaurants and walks in the park or garden, if that’s something you enjoy. The bottom line is that they mesh fashion and comfort and are something that every man needs to own.

Wedding Fashion

Looking for something to wear to a family event, or a wedding? A traditional sherwani might be right for you. These long coat-like articles of clothing are intended to be worn at wedding events so that you can look like a fashionable and upstanding man.

Like casual outfits, you can purchase sherwani in a huge number of different brocade styles. They come in multiple materials including silk and jaquard. While raised silk accents are common and generally a good decision, you can also get sherwani in solid colors like green. These usually feature a single-colored accent around the cuffs and down the front of the coat where the buttons are.

If you’re headed to a family wedding or a large formal dinner, you also will likely want to wear a traditional turban. You can order a turban that’s made to perfectly match any sherwani that we sell in our shop. This is also the case if you want matching shoes, dupatta, and trousers.

Professional Perfection

Indian fashion is perfect for professional settings. Brocade silk is significantly nicer than the material that western suit jackets are made from, and you can get various raised-silk patterns to make your professional attire your own. Whether you want diamonds, large circles, or floral patterns, there’s an Indian-inspired suit jacket for you!

Indo-Western outfits also come in many different cuts. You can get both symmetrical and asymmetrical jackets, which lets you get in on one of the latest American fashion trends. Thes are also perfect for wearing in casual settings if you’re a fan of asymmetrical patterns and styles!

Some of our Indo-Western outfits also cut off above the waist as American suit jackets do. If this length is required by your work dress code, there’s nothing to worry about! We also offer full customization of most products so you can modify the length of your favorite Indian men’s wear.

More Types of Occasion and What to Wear Tips

While there are many ways that you can dress for all occasions, Indian outfits are the perfect blend of unique and trendy. Not only will you be boasting the finest colors and fabrics, but you also will be able to express your love for your Indian roots (or, if you aren’t Indian, the fact that you love to learn about and share other rich cultural practices).

Now that you know many types of occasion and what to wear to them, it’s time to get started. Shop for Indian-inspired men’s clothing today and find the best deals on high-quality outfits. In our online store, you’ll find fashions that you can wear to any occasion so that you can look handsome and show off the fact that you’re a man of good taste, so get shopping!

I Tried Girlfriend Collective's New Lightweight Line and It's Perfect For Hot, Sweaty Workouts

Dan Levy Wants You to Take This Online Course With Him

Dan Levy is starting a new project and he wants everyone to join in. No, it’s not a new television show. It’s a 12-week online course offered by the University of Alberta, titled Indigenous Canada.

On Instagram, Levy announced that he has enrolled in the course, which explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada, and will be starting classes this week. The 12-week online course covers topics like the fur trade, land claims and environmental impacts, and Indigenous political activism.

“If 2020 has taught us anything it’s that we actively need to relearn history, history that wasn’t taught to us in school, to better understand and contextualize our lives and how we can better support and be of service to each other,” said Levy in an Instagram video.

To encourage other people to sign up for the course and to create an environment of open dialogue, Levy will be hosting weekly discussions with the professors every Sunday for the 12-week duration. The discussions and Q&A segments will be shared on Levy’s social media page starting this Sunday, August 23 at 3pm EST.

“I thought, if I’m going to sign up and learn, maybe some other people would want to join me and we could do this as a group,” said Levy. “If you’re anything like me, I was not a good student and I need group support. I thought this could be a really great way of doing that.”

Indigenous Canada is open to people within and outside Canada, and can be completed for free. The course consists of twelve modules, each with a series of video lectures, a set of course notes and course glossary, and required and recommended readings. The commitment level estimated by the university for completion of this course is 3-5 hours per week, which, let’s face it, seems like a much better use of our time than yet another Netflix binge.

I'm a Trainer, and This Exercise Will Help Loosen Up Your Tight Shoulders, Neck, and Back

One of my favourite things about being a trainer is discussing all things training with my fellow trainer friends. I'm the type of person that always wants to learn new things, and I always come out of these conversations with new ideas for programming and how to take care of the body and improve how it functions.

I've learned a lot of new exercises to help build muscle and strengthen the core, for example, but one of the most underrated moves, in my opinion, that I've learned over the years is the thoracic spine "T-spine" opener. Your thoracic spine is located in your upper back and runs from the base of your neck down to your abdomen. It supports your neck, protects your spinal cord, and also helps anchor your rib cage. We need to take care of our thoracic spine because it helps us have good posture and allows us to move in all directions.

If you're someone who sits for a prolonged period of time, you may be experiencing tightness in your neck, shoulders, and back, and this move can help alleviate some of that tightness by increasing your T-spine mobility. There are a few variations of this exercise but I really like the lying version. I recommend doing it on both your recovery days and before your workouts as part of your warmup. Here's how to do it.

How to Do a Lying T-Spine Opener

  • Start lying in a straight line from head to toe on your left side. Keep your left leg fully extended as you bend at your right knee and place it on top of a foam roller parallel to your body. Your right knee should be perpendicular to your right hip, creating close to a 90-degree angle at the right hip. This is your starting position.
  • Keeping your right knee "glued" to the foam roller, extend your left arm straight out with your palm facing up, and then stack your right arm on top of the left. Don't let your right shoulder fall to the left, and be sure to maintain a straight line from your head to your toes.
  • With control, begin to peel your right arm off of your left, keeping it fully extended, as you rotate toward your right from the upper back. Your knee should never move off the foam roller. The only movement should be coming from your upper back/spine. As you rotate open towards the right, be sure to rotate your head, following your right hand with your eyes.
  • Moving with control, rotate open as far as you can without your knee coming off the foam roller. How far you go will be different for everyone, so it's OK if you cannot go that far. Be sure to keep your right arm completely extended from your fingers to your shoulder. Don't bend your wrist in an attempt to touch the ground. This movement is all about control; the ability to rotate further will come with repetition and consistency.
  • Once you've reached your end point (the point where you cannot go any further without sacrificing your form), slowly begin to return to the starting position with control, keeping your arm extended and your right knee on the foam roller. Be sure to follow your hand with your eyes, rotating your head back to the left.
  • Place your right arm back on top of the left arm. This counts as one rep.
  • Complete eight reps on the right side, then repeat for eight reps on the left side.
