Classic Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes are extremely popular sliced and fried crunchy bites of tangy green tomatoes. They are totally addictive and easy to make at home!

Classic Fried Green Tomatoes

Green tomatoes are a great sign that fall is on its way. The cooler weather delivers an abundance of these unripe tomatoes. They are a more firm tomato with a tangy flavor that changes things up from the red tomatoes that filled the summertime menus. The juicy sweet and sour red tomatoes give way to the less moist green tomato.  Although it is not a great tomato to eat raw, it is the perfect texture to cook or pickle.  Load them up with flavorful batter and fry them for a warm and crisp bite that doesn’t collapse in the process.

Frying green tomatoes is the most common way to cook them. That’s no surprise because they are easy to make at home and taste amazing every time. Simply slice them in even sized slices, dredge through savory batter, then fry them to a crispy perfection.  Every bite is filled with an explosion of firm, sour tomato on the inside and the crunch of a perfectly seasoned crust.  Add these to your must try fall recipes, because your family will go crazy over them!

Ingredients For Green Tomatoes:

Green tomatoes start this short list of simple ingredients that make up this family favorite appetizer.  They are firm enough to hold up to the flavorful fried batter that creates a light and crispy crust.  These will be the best fried tomatoes you have ever had!

  • Green tomatoes: Firm and acidic slightly sour unripe tomatoes.
  • Oil: Canola or vegetable oil is used for frying the tomatoes.
  • Eggs: Adds a golden color and crispy texture.
  • Milk: Helps the batter stick to the tomato.
  • Flour: Adds to the crispiness of the batter and keeps it from soaking up too much oil.
  • Salt and pepper: To taste.
  • Cornmeal: Adds to the golden coating.
  • Breadcrumbs: Adds crunch and flavor to the breading.
  • Parmesan: Grated cheese will add nutty flavor to the crust.
  • Italian seasoning: A fantastic blend of seasonings. If you want to make your own use a combination of basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, garlic powder, sage, or coriander.

How to Fry Green Tomatoes:

These amazing bites of crispy fried green tomato are super easy to make from scratch at home.  No doubt, they are the most satisfying snack or appetizer you will make this fall!

  1. Heat oil: In a medium size saucepan add the oil until it is about 1/2 inch up the sides of the pan. Heat to medium high heat. Slice the tomatoes 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Prepare batter: In a small bowl add the eggs and whisk. Gradually add in the milk. In another small bowl add the flour, salt and pepper. In another small bowl add the cornmeal, bread crumbs, and Parmesan cheese.
  3. Dredge: Dip each tomato slice first in the eggs, then coat in the flour, and lastly the cornmeal mix. Add the tomatoes to the pan of oil and cook for 2-3 minutes until crispy and golden brown. Finally, remove with a slotted spoon and let cool.

Tips for Classic Fried Green Tomatoes:

Fried Green Tomatoes are a delicious start or side to any meal.  They are tried and true crowd-favorites that are bursting with vibrant flavor.

  • Green Tomatoes: Since the star of this recipe is the green tomato, be sure to choose tomatoes that are all green. Any red on the tomato means they have started to ripen. Red tomatoes are more moist and will interfere with the crispy crust you are trying to achieve.
  • Reheat: Warm up leftovers in a toaster or oven at a low temperature (below 350 degrees) until they are heated throughout. For best results, do not microwave or the fried tomatoes will be chewy, not crisp.
  • Cold batter and hot oil: Keep your batter cold and your oil hot to make the most crispy and light fried green tomatoes.  If the oil is too cool, the tomatoes will soak up too much oil.  However, if the oil is too hot they will burn.  To be sure your oil is just right, use a thermometer to make sure the oil stays around 350 degrees or medium-high heat.

What to Serve:

Classic fried green tomatoes are so satisfying just the way they are.  It is hard not to eat them all right out of the skillet! However, they do not have to be served alone.  Actually, they pair well with many dishes.  Here are a few ideas on ways to serve these insanely delicious tomato bites.

  • Caprese Twist: These tomatoes are a fantastic way to liven up those summer Caprese recipes and transition them to fall.  For example, try a tangy twist on a Caprese salad, Farro Caprese Salad, or Chicken Caprese Macaroni and Cheese.
  • Dipping Sauce: Dip in tabasco sauce, Tzatziki Sauce or remoulade sauce for a creamy burst of flavor.
  • Serve with: While at first glance this recipe may seem like a perfect appetizer or afternoon snack, they also pair well with Eggs Benedict for breakfast or Lobster Mac and Cheese at dinnertime.
  • Buttermilk: Leave out the egg and soak tomatoes in buttermilk instead of regular milk.  Additionally, let them soak in the buttermilk for a couple of minutes before dredging them through the batter mixture.

Can You Make Ahead Fried Green Tomatoes?

These bite size appetizers are easy to make ahead. Simply dip them in the breadcrumb mixture and freeze until you are ready to fry them. The best way to freeze them is to place them on a baking sheet in a single layer for about 15 minutes. Then, they can be easily transferred to a Ziploc bag to continue freezing. They do not need to be thawed before frying.

Charlie Boyd is a Sound healing practitioner and Embodiment Facilitator. She founded Firm Feet® in 2016. “My focus for Firm Feet® is on balancing everyday mental wellbeing through movement and sound. Being creative with the tools that I have learnt along the way that aided me to have a better relationship with my body.” Having had eating disorders and mental health issues from a young age she wanted to share with people what has helped her accept her body and mind. Charlie has overcome some chronic health issues such as cyclical migraines, Amenorrhea and chronic anxiety through using movement and sound.

Born out of hedonism and the love for dancing, Charlie created a more conscious approach to dance movement meditation called Dance in the dark® which is a tasty concoction of her qualifications and experiences. She is foremost a singer for Hamartia and The Inside, digger and DJ and wanted to share her passion for rare house, deep experimental, groove and music from all over the globe in the sessions. While facilitating a space for people to move through and get in touch with their bodies while breaking through mental stagnation.

During lockdown she created an online subscription for £10 a month releasing a weekly brand new session that participants can shut the curtains and practice in their own home, enabling them to drop out of their thinking minds and into their bodies.

She holds 1:1 online immersive sound healing sessions. Working with the client to connect with and expose stagnation of the mind, body and spirit then deliver the appropriate treatment with her voice, resonance, vibration and other instruments.

Charlie recently moved to Edinburgh with her partner. In London she ran ‘Love your body’ sessions at the Hackney Recovery college. Working with people with addiction and mental health issues aiding them to discuss, break the stigma and provide tools to overcome body image issues. She co-founded social prescribing initiative Conscious Care Community in Waltham Forest providing free and alternative therapies to people in the community.

Exercise Slows Down Aging: Know the Truths Behind

You can slather on all the anti-ageing essentials but bear in mind that the secret to staying young is by leading a healthy lifestyle. A healthy and balanced diet, adequate sleep, and exercise are the key factors for ageing gracefully.

If you enjoy good health, you already know how exercise plays a vital role in maintaining an active and healthy body as you grow older. Let’s take a look at how exercise assists the body through ageing. We will also enumerate some of the effective workouts that slow down the ageing process.

Ageing is Inevitable

Nobody can stop the clock, but the good news is that we can slow its tick. Based on research studies, a significant contributing factor to ageing is disuse. Exercise, not expensive skincare products and surgical procedures, is the key to reversing ageing signs.

According to studies, individuals in their golden years who exercise regularly are 39% less likely to suffer from heart attacks than those who lead sedentary lifestyles.

The incidence and prevalence of stroke are lower among active older adults compared to their inactive peers. In one study, mild exercise is linked to a 24% risk reduction of stroke attacks. Older adults who engage in moderate to intensive workout programs have reduced their risk of suffering from stroke by 46%.

Cancer development is a rather complicated condition, but regular exercise aids in fighting one of Australia’s leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Older men and women who include exercise as part of their wellness plan are 47% less likely to develop certain types of cancers than their sedentary peers.

Truth #2 – Apart from effectively preventing the onset of many diseases, exercising also cures and alleviates certain illnesses, hence boosting the quality of life.

Male and female cyclists in the 55 to 70 age group report ease and efficiency when performing daily tasks as their body and its parts are in excellent condition. Also, exercise helps in improving one’s mental agility, cognition, and health, among many others.

An ageing individual’s cardiovascular fitness, aerobic capacity, and strength level contribute to his or her longevity. Even insurance companies assess disability and survival based on the level of activity of its prospective policyholders.

Men and women between the ages of 40 and 50 with an established good health and who exercise regularly are perceived to be low-risk policyholders as they are less likely to suffer from disability or dependency once they reach old age.

With all the benefits of exercise, we can go through the ageing process at a slower pace while enjoying a healthier life. Life expectancy is extended about two hours for each hour of working out.

Throughout a lifetime, older men and women can expect about two additional years if they start integrating exercise as part of their health and wellness habits. And for those sedentary or inactive, it’s not too late. Start exercising today and see how physical activity enhances your health and gives you the gift of long life.

Spending a run (or a car trip or just a few minutes of downtime) hanging out with some stories in our ears is just what we need to reset our brains and take on the day's next challenge. So much has the potential to bring us down right now that this month is a good time to focus on the pods that have brought us joy.

My joy is sparked by a host who clearly loves the story she's telling you, which is why I was thrilled that a new season of Lauren Ober's Spectacular Failures just dropped. Rather than dryly recount all of the mistakes that went into the ultimate failure of, say, Schlitz or Kodak, Ober talks to you like she's your best girlfriend telling a dishy story. The new season even includes a cooking segment -- Ober is talking about Blue Apron -- and you feel like you are at the table with her, eating pasta and reveling in her delight about the story she wants to tell you. —Adrienne

Here two well-done podcasts fit the bill: Wind of Change, which explores a rumor (or fact?!) about whether the CIA wrote The Scorpions' anthem, "Wind of Change," in order to help bring down Communist regimes. (Honestly: It's intriguing, and I dare you to not play the song 100x during the course of enjoying the podcast!) The other is American Skyjacker, the intriguing tale of a daring man during America's "Golden Age of Hijacking."—Sarah

Here’s Why Meghan Markle is Asking, Instead of Answering, Questions in Her Next Interview

2020 marks the centennial of women’s right to vote in the United States and in honour of the milestone—as well as in acknowledgement of the work still left to do—nonprofit newsroom The 19th* is hosting a virtual summit this week, which will close with an interview with Meghan Markle.

In this case, however, the Duchess of Sussex will be the one asking the questions. On August 14, she will be interviewing Emily Ramshaw, cofounder and CEO of the news platform (named for the 19th amendment that granted American women suffrage) that focuses on the intersection of gender and politics.

“The 19th*’s commitment to reporting and storytelling that lifts up those who are too often underrepresented in the media has never been more important,” the Duchess said in a statement to Glamour. “I’m looking forward to asking the cofounder what it means to build a media outlet with gender equity, diversity, and community at its core.”

Ramshaw says it was the Duchess who first reached out to them to discuss involvement after learning about the 19th*’s mission. “She told us that our vision for The 19th*—building a truly diverse and representative newsroom that covers women with nuance—spoke to her immediately.”

This is the second virtual summit the Duchess will be participating in this summer, the first being the Girl Up Global Leadership Summit last month. This latest summit, titled The 19th* Represents, kicked off today and consists of a series of live-streamed conversations between prominent women in politics, civics, journalism, and the arts. Participants lined up for the event include Senator Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, Madame Gandhi, Zoe Saldana and Meryl Streep.

The 19th* Represents is free to attend online with registration, and the session led by Meghan Markle will stream at approximately 4.30pm EST on Friday, August 14.

How Lockdown Has Impacted Our Shopping Habits

There’s no denying that the COVID-19 pandemic has had an incredible impact on all of our lives, and the changes we’re experiencing as a result have had a huge effect on our spending, too. Online fashion aggregator Lyst recently released its Q2 report, which detailed the hottest brands over the past three months, as well as different trends in shopping habits during lockdown – and the results paint an interesting picture of our new “normal”. Here are the top six takeaways from the report:

1. A non-luxury brand snagged the top brand spot for the first time in the report’s history

Nike has emerged victorious, according to the Lyst report, snagging the coveted number one spot on the ‘Hottest Brands’ round-up. It is the first time a non-luxury brand has taken out the top spot since the report began, and marks a two spot rise for the sportswear giant. The report notes that Nike’s ascension was “propelled by a 106 per cent increase in demand for loungewear and activewear, as consumers sought comfortable clothes to wear at home, as well as attire for exercise and outdoor activities.” It also had various online successes, including the Air Jordan x Dior sneaker raffle and its anti-racism video on Instagram which racked up more than five million likes.

2.  Genderless products have ruled in lockdown

The report details how Birkenstock’s Arizona sandals were the hottest shoe in the world over the past quarter. Searches for the item rose 225 per cent in that time. A designer version of the slides by Brunello Cucinelli also made it into the men’s top 10 list. Unisex combat boots are also on the rise, thanks to Timothée Chalamet, Evan Mock and Soko all sporting Alexander McQueen’s Tread Slick boots.

3. Summer-ready dresses were also big

As we longed for summer days, we began to search for the ‘it’ dress of the season – and as it turns out, there’s two we all gravitated towards. Cult Gaia’s Serita cut-out dress came in at number five on the women’s hottest products list following a 22 per cent rise in searches for the piece. Plus, H&M’s puff-sleeve, fuchsia pink midi dress came in at number nine after selling out just days after it was released.

4. Basics are also key across the men’s and women’s hottest products listings

From Calvin Klein bralettes, padded shoulder tees, gold earrings and boxing shorts to a Gucci baseball cap and Yeezy cotton trousers, we’ve all been longing for good quality basics over the past few months it would seem. In fact, searches for baseball caps increased 49 per cent this quarter, with Gucci leading the pack, followed by Nike, Prada and Palm Angels.

5. Harry Styles remains a big influencer

First it was pearl necklaces, and now it’s chunky knit cardigans – Harry Styles is officially the world’s wardrobe muse. After wearing a JW Anderson, multi-coloured knit cardigan back in February, Styles sparked a viral TikTok challenge in late June, called the #HarryStylesCardigan challenge, which saw searches for the piece increase 166 per cent.

6. All of our TV bingeing has impacted our wardrobes

Just as in Q1 when our Tiger King obsession led us all to search Anine Bing’s tiger sweatshirt, our TV binges have continued to impact our quarantine (and post-quarantine) wardrobes in a big way. Within days of the release of The Last Dance on Netflix, searches for Nike Air Jordan sneakers rose 36 per cent, and the Nike Air Jordan 4 retro flyknit sneaker came in at number nine on the men’s hottest products list. Sally Rooney’s Normal People was also a big influencer, as it pushed men’s chain necklaces into the spotlight. Searches for chains increased, and men’s jewellery searches increased 75 per cent overall during this time.

Dan Levy Relaunched His Eyewear Brand and It Sold Out in Less Than 24 Hours

When it comes to his look, possibly the most coveted thing about Dan Levy—apart from his eyebrows—is his glasses. No wonder then, that the relaunch of his eyewear brand, DL Eyewear, sold out in under 24 hours.

Levy first launched the brand in 2013, based on how often he was approached by people asking where his enviable collection of glasses came from.

“I felt a little strange telling a 13-year-old kid to go spend $600 on a pair of designer eyewear,” says Levy in a video on the brand’s Instagram page. “So I thought, what about creating a line that people could afford? And the goal was to create a comprehensive collection that would suit every face.”

He put the brand on pause when he began working on Schitt’s Creek in 2015, and has taken it up again now that the show’s over, noticing that the brand continued to sell pieces online during that time even without any promotion. (The glasses worn by Johnny and Moira Rose on the show, by the way, happen to be DL Eyewear originals.)

Now, Levy has relaunched the gender-fluid eyewear brand with a collection of 23 new frames, including both sun and optical options, with an affordable price tag of USD 135 per pair. The brand’s new motto “See with love” is inscribed on the inside of each frame.

“With every pair that you put on I hope that it reminds people to live their lives with kindness and love and empathy,” says Levy. “That’s why we’ve written it in the inside of the frame—a daily reminder to live your best life and to be kind to one another.”

The brand also aims to give back with love, with a portion of profits going towards the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and its efforts to help small businesses impacted by COVID-19.

“[Our] motto is reflected through our decision to give back through our support of Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), which assists small businesses — including those owned by women, people of colour, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and entrepreneurs located in historically disadvantaged communities. Even though D.L. Eyewear is also a small business, we hope that through our support of LISC, the growth of our business ensures that others can advance too.”

The first DL Eyewear drop sold out in less than a day, but the brand promises a restock is coming soon. Stay tuned.
