My Story: Ashley Callingbull on Smashing Stereotypes and Finding Strength in Her Indigenous Culture

Born in Enoch Cree Nation in Alberta, Ashley Callingbull became a household name after becoming the first Indigenous woman — and Canadian — to win the Mrs. Universe title in 2015. The historic victory marked so much more than a beauty pageant win for Callingbull: Her moment in the spotlight turned into a prime opportunity to shed a light on causes that hit close to home. During her time with the crown, Callingbull used her Mrs. Universe platform and budding social media following to bring much-needed attention to human rights issues affecting Indigenous communities, including raising awareness around the inquiry into the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Canada. She’s also been very vocal about the domestic violence crisis, something she endured as a child, along with her mother.

Since emerging from the beauty pageant scene, Callingbull has never stopped using her voice to make a difference, and has gone on to become an actor, philanthropist, public speaker, model and brand ambassador for mainstream fashion brands. Here, she shares, in her own words, her role models, major life lessons, and why her big pageant victory felt hard-won.

On being a model muse for mainstream brands like RW & Co.:

“I love that I’m able to do these big campaigns for these [type of] organizations because they actually let me have a voice; they let you be an ambassador for them, and you’re an ambassador of what your platform is. RW & Co lets me donate back to the different charities that I volunteer for. Not very many organizations will do things like that. And it’s amazing what you can do with modeling if you do have a voice — it’s all about giving back. Campaigns are not just about you; they’re about who you’re impacting and what lives you’re changing. And as so long as I have a voice, I’m happy, because I don’t like to be silenced. I always like to speak my mind because I’m speaking on behalf of other people all the time. Being a face of a campaign and being an indigenous woman is rare to see; it took a long time for that to happen. I’m glad we’re finally being recognized.”

On being from Enoch Cree Nation:

“I’m really proud to be from Enoch Cree Nation — to be a Plains Cree woman. To be from the small community where I’m from, to do all the things that I’ve done — and to see more Indigenous youth coming out of my community and being successful — is a proud moment because there’s a huge stereotype on us that we’ll always fail. I love to prove myself wrong; I love to prove other people wrong. Nothing will change me, no matter where I go or what I find success in. I’m still that girl from the reserve, and I carry that pride everywhere I go.”

On her beauty icons and role models:

“The two people closest to home: my mom and grandmother. They were the ones that kept me straight. I remember growing up, a lot of people would make fun of my skin, make fun that I looked different and that I came from the reserve. People just called me out on everything that I wasn’t. And whenever I felt bad about the way that I looked or where I came from, I would talk to my grandmother and my mom. My grandmother always made me feel beautiful. She always told me that it’s beautiful to look the way that we do and to be proud of our background. It’s crazy how culture can make you feel strong and beautiful.”

On the power of being different:

“Growing up, I was pretty much a tomboy and didn’t get into makeup until I turned 18. When I did my first pageant, that was a completely different world for me in regards to fashion, makeup and hair. I never experienced anything like that before. And it became a big thing right off the bat that no one around me looked like me, which made it hard to look up to people. I told myself, ‘If this is going to happen, I’m going to be one of the first, but I’m not going to be the last.’ I basically just started doing my own thing. Now, seeing more indigenous models and designers, everything is finally being acknowledged in the right way.”

On competing for the Mrs. Universe 2015 crown and her pageant experiences at large:

“I remember right when I joined, there were no Indigenous women competing. It was rare even to see other women of colour in the pageant because pageants had this standard of beauty: tall, white, blonde. It felt like, as women of colour, you had to work harder to break that mould. I experienced racism at a whole new level: A lot of people were telling me to go home, telling me I didn’t belong here because I didn’t dress like them, look like them, or didn’t present myself in the way that they wanted. But I always thought to myself, I’m not going to change myself for anybody. I’m just going to give you the best of what I have and who I am. And if you like it, you like it. If you don’t, that’s not my problem. I’m proud of who I am. I remember when I became the first Indigenous woman to be Miss Canada in 2010, I thought, ‘Wow, this is crazy!’ I never thought I’d see that coming. And when I competed in international pageants, no one ever thought I was Indigenous. They always thought I was Latina or Filipino — they always thought I was something that I wasn’t. Now, I see a lot more Indigenous women competing. Pageants are definitely becoming more diverse and have more purpose. Like, when I was competing, there were maybe only a handful of us who were doing it for charity reasons. But today, you have to have a purpose.”

On her definition of beauty:

“Beauty to me has a lot to do with culture and just being proud about the way you were created. I wouldn’t want to ever look like anyone else because I was made this way for a reason. Beauty is about embracing who I am every time I wake up.”

On beauty rituals she’s adopted from her grandmother and mother:

“My grandmother never had wrinkles. I couldn’t believe it! She always moisturized her face every night and never wore makeup. She always told me, ‘Don’t wear makeup if you don’t have to. Give your skin a break.’ So when I’m not working or doing any events, I never wear it. I like to go to the sauna a three times a week, but when I can’t, I boil hot water in a pot, take it off the stove, rest my head at a distance over it and place a towel over my head so that the steam opens up my pores cleans out my skin. My grandmother and mom taught me that, and mom does it a lot. It’s almost like a little sauna for your face. I do that maybe twice a week when I can’t got to the sauna.”

On future goals:

“I want to create my own foundation, and I want it to be focused on women and children who are facing homelessness and have gone through domestic abuse. I do a lot for Edmonton’s WIN House, but it would be amazing to have a foundation strictly for Indigenous women and children, because that’s the highest rate. A lot of times there’s no room in shelters, and that was the problem me and my mom had when we I was growing up and we tried to escape domestic violence. There was no room for us. So I know what it’s like not to have somewhere to go, and I don’t want our women suffering like how I did. If they can get another chance at life, give it to them. That’s a big goal of mine.”

Mother Runners of the Month: Heidi Mischel + Abbie McKee

Each month, we celebrate two athletes monthly in our #motherrunnner community.
[because sports awards aren’t just for youth soccer]

One athlete participates in our Many Happy Miles program and the other one is in a Train Like a Mother Club program: nothing like vicariously living through workout specifics, training cycles, and upcoming (virtual) races, right?

More importantly, they both epitomize the traits that keep us all moving forward: perspective, diligence, badassery, flexibility, and grit.

Heidi and her husband hiking in the mountains of Park City, Utah.

HEIDI MISCHEL

Location: Milbank, South Dakota

Kids: 3 kids; William (21), Claire (19) and Marion (16). I run with our labradoodle, Luna, when it is not too hot. We also have 3 horses, 2 cats and too many chickens.

What's your running story?
I started running shortly after William was born. I was a walker before then. It was simply a matter of needing to cover my 4 mile route faster so my husband could get to work on time.

I have done several 5Ks and 10Ks, and 13 or 14 half-marathons. However, the Twins Cities 10 miler is my favorite race and distance.

Now I run because I can. My daughter asked me why I do long runs if I am not training for anything. My answer: "Because I can, plus it makes me feel BadA$$”.

Why did you join Many Happy Miles?
I joined Many Happy Miles when it first started at the end of 2018. I wasn’t on a training plan but I wanted the sense of being on one.

I like how each month has a theme and keeps things fresh.

The MHM community is an amazing group of supportive, loving and dedicated women. As Caite says, “it’s the happiest place on the internet”. I agree with her 110%. This group of women consisting of all ages, experiences, and walks of life helps to build me up and makes me stronger – both mentally and physically.

Best workout in Many Happy Miles so far:
Heather, my favorite workouts are from November 2019 when the month consisted of Hat Tips (h/t) to Many Happy Miles members' favorite workouts. I love "h/t Ash" and "h/t Dimity." These are workout I go back to when I want to work on speed or running on the treadmill.

Hardest workout in Many Happy Miles so far:
I would say h/t Ash is a tough workout. I was cursing h/t Ash the first time I did this workout. I still occasionally curse her, but in a very good way. I tend to enjoy the tough ones.

Upcoming races? I just joined Train Like a Mother Club's Love the Run You're With 2.0. I think this is a fun way to stay motivated and positive. I was hoping to do the Twin Cities 10 miler again, but it is virtual this year.

When I run, I feel: empowered. I know that I can tackle almost anything after a run.

ABBIE MCKEE

Program: Ultra 50 Mile Program

Location: Spokane, Washington

Kids: Two amazing boys – Hunter (13) and Maks (10) and two amazing dogs – BoBo (15 years!) and GiGi (5 months)

What’s your running story?
I started consistently running at about age 23 and was lucky enough to find an amazing group of other fellow #motherrunners.

Currently, I run every weekday at 5am with my BRF, Nancy (pictured above). Through this consistency, I quickly became hooked to running! Our mornings are joyful due to the deep meaningful conversations we have that provide therapy for my soul. Running each morning fills my cup, so I can pour that goodness to others the rest of the day. I’m "addicted" in all the best ways!

What led you to choosing the 50 mile ultra program and why do you enjoy it?
My friend from college, Kat Schjei, is a BAMbassador and is a part of the program. She has had so much ultra running success - figured this was a no-brainer proven plan to use! It also was easy to use and had a very clear plan for training. Loved the group chats too!

Why did you join the Love the Run You're With virtual race series?
I’d trained with a coach for the January Aramco Half Marathon in Houston and loved the individual attention, having someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to help push me out of my comfort zone, and someone telling me, “YOU CAN DO IT,” because she had helped me aim for reachable (challenging) time goals.

Up until that point I’d trained with an awesome running group, Gotta Run Katy, and loved the community aspect but wanted workouts tailored to my goals.

Love the Run gave me a great combo of both of those without the person-to person contact during this Covid-19-ridden time and without the price of a personal coach.

This program is a steal for four months of coaching, swag, community, yoga, strength, love, and joy.

Best workout in Love the Run You're With so far:
I vacillate between the Tuesday intervals and Thursday hills. I love me that track workout because I feel like a badass getting on the track and pushing it and reaching for short goals and then that feeling of “AHHHH” in the recovery.

The book “Endure” by Alex Hutchinson really helped me overcome a fear of the hard track workout.

The Thursday hills are fun because I run a mile and a half to a parking garage (there are four to choose from so it’s a la carte hills) and then just run up and down until twenty minutes are up. Then I run home. I like how the run is broken up so each segment feels brief yet I feel accomplished.

Most challenging workout in Love the Run You're With so far:
The twelve mile long run was the most challenging for me. Long runs are always head games. Large chunks of time at the same pace.

Now I’m focused on zone 2 for the first two miles then zone 3 for the bulk of the long run and then I finish in zone 4 - picking it up for the last two miles or so. At least that’s the goal. 😉

What goals have you set for the races in this series?
Each race I've set the goal to finish strong, feeling good about my effort. My fitness had flagged since January so coming to terms with being slower and feeling creaky took some time.

When I run, I feel: EMPOWERED.

The First Three Products in the Fenty Skin Line Have Been Revealed

Earlier this month, Rihanna announced that she would be dropping her highly anticipated Fenty Skin line on July 31 – and now, the first three products from the brand extension have been revealed.

The products are described as “multi-tasking”, “easy-to-use” and “value-packed with skincare benefits” in the official press release, and are known together as the Fenty Skin Start’rs. The first step is the Total Cleans’r Remove-It-All Cleanser which is both a cleanser and a makeup remover, followed by the Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum which works to reduce dark spots, refine pores, even skin tone and fight shine in a gentle formula, and the Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen, a refillable moisturizer/suncare hybrid that simultaneously protects the skin whilst brightening it and reducing the appearance of pores. Ingredients used in the products include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, Kalahari melon, Barbados cherry, Australian lemon myrtle and witch hazel water, cactus flower and fig. Plus, the formulas are oil-free, gluten-free and vegan and the products are all housed in eco-friendly packaging.

“These three products comprise Rihanna’s real-life routine for getting healthy, glowing skin in just a few simple steps,” according to the release. The line has been in the works for several years and has been designed to complement the cosmetics in the Fenty Beauty range. And just as with their makeup counterparts, the Fenty Skin products are made for all skin types and tones.

Rihanna drew upon her own experiences with skincare as a teen to create the line, noting an experience using a product which discoloured her skin which left her scared to try anything else for a long time afterwards. “Fenty Skin is everything I wish I had back then,” Rihanna says in the release. “I wanted it to feel approachable, easy and to take the pressure off choosing a routine, so I created one for everyone.”

Fenty Skin officially launches on July 31, but you can still sign up for early access from July 29 here.

No Bake Cheesecake

No Bake Cheesecake is so creamy, luxurious, and surprisingly easy to make from scratch at home.  Top it with whipped cream and fresh fruit and it will be a huge hit that everyone will obsess over!

Simple variations of this no bake cheesecake can make a big impact when entertaining.  Try 2 Ingredient Cheesecake Dip or Cheesecake Stuffed Strawberries for quick and easy twists on no-bake cheesecake that can be served as delicious starters.

Finished no bake cheese cake topped with whipped cream strawberry syrup and strawberries.

Easy No Bake Cheesecake

No Bake cheesecake is the best no bake cheesecake you will make!  The rich flavors are easy to achieve and effortless to create.  It is an amazing dessert that your family will request over and over.  The good news is you can make simple swaps to the crust and switch up toppings for an entirely different feel so you will never get tired of it!

Every bite of the filling is bursting with tangy cream cheese, smooth vanilla, and bright lemon flavors that are irresistible together!  The crunch of the crumbly graham cracker crust is a perfect contrast to the soft and sweet filling.  Your family and friends will go crazy over how incredibly delicious it is!  Make more than one at a time, because this no bake cheesecake gets devoured quickly!

No Bake Cheesecake Ingredients:

A short list of no-fuss ingredients come together to make the most decadent cheesecake.  For the best results, make sure all the ingredients are at room temperature before you begin the recipe.   This will prevent the cheesecake from cracking, and give you a perfectly smooth and creamy filling.

  • Graham crackers: Crush in food processor or with a rolling pin over a bag of crackers.
  • Brown sugar: Mix together with butter and graham crackers to make a sweet and buttery crust.
  • Butter: Binding agent to hold together the crust.
  • Cream cheese: Mild and tangy flavor and smooth texture for the filling.
  • Lemon juice: A hint of vibrant citrus flavor.
  • Vanilla: Brings out all the flavors in the filling.
  • Sugar: Adds sweetness!
  • Heavy whipping cream: Makes the filling even more smooth and sweet.
  • Optional Topping: Strawberry sauce

How to Make Cheesecake:

No-bake cheesecake is a luxurious dessert that is no longer only reserved for a restaurant on date night.  Now, you can make this any day of the week because it is so easy to put together from scratch at home!

  1. Mix crust: In a medium sized bowl add the crushed graham cracker, brown sugar, and butter and mix until incorporated.
  2. Form crust: In a springform pan add the graham crackers and press firmly into the bottom and sides. Place in the refrigerator.
  3. Combine filling: In a large bowl combine the cream cheese, lemon juice, vanilla and sugar. Beat until smooth and creamy.  Add in the heavy whipping cream and continue to beat until stiff peaks form.
  4. Layer filling over crust: Spread filling evenly along the crust.
  5. Chill and Serve: Place in refrigerator to chill for 3 hours or overnight and serve with strawberry topping if desired.

Steps to make no bake cheesecake.

Variations for Homemade Cheesecake:

No Bake cheesecake is less dense and heavy than baked cheesecakes.  It is incredibly delicious, light and tasty!  Here are my ideas for how to create a variety of inspired twists on this one amazing recipe!

  • Design: Prepare the cheesecake in a parchment paper lined 8×8 dish.  Then, after chilling in the refrigerator lift the cheesecake out with the parchment paper and cut the cheesecake into small squares for bite sized treats.  Even dip them in chocolate for a smooth outer shell and professional looking presentation.  Or prepare them in small cups or a mini muffin pan for smaller servings you don’t have to slice.
  • Toppings: Add whipped cream and fresh fruit for extra sweetness and color. Strawberries are a favorite, but raspberries, blueberries, or any fruit that’s in season make great toppings.  Also try sauces like lemon curd, freezer jam, homemade salted caramel sauce, or chocolate syrup.
  • Filling: Add a bit of sour cream for even more tangy flavor and creaminess. Or for a small crunch try adding in some crushed oreos, sprinkles (a hit with kids) or chocolate shavings.
  • Crust: To change up the flavor try using chocolate or cinnamon sugar graham crackers or crushed oreos in the crust.

Close up on finished no bake cheesecake decorated with whipped cream and strawberries.

Can you Freeze Strawberry Cheesecake?

Yes!  Before decorating, wrap your no bake cheesecake in heavy duty aluminum foil, plastic wrap, or place in a shallow airtight container.  Then store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.  Thaw it in the refrigerator and add toppings before serving.  It will remain good for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.

Debunking Five Stereotypes of Yoga and Yogis

There are several stereotypical ideas floating around about what it means to be a yoga lover, and these can often discourage people from getting involved! So, let’s look at five ideas that have been unfairly connected to yoga and yogis, and debunk the stereotypes!

Yoga Is A Stretching Class For Girls

“I’m not flexible enough for yoga!”, is an excuse you may have used in the past to brush off an invite to practice, but strength is what you’ll need to see a session through to the end. Being able to stretch won’t save you when you must call upon your own body strength to move through the asanas. Even staying in a simple Downward Dog for more than a few moments will get your muscles in motion – whether you’re a girl or not!

Yoga Is For Hippies And Spiritual People

You don’t need to have long hair, tattoos and believe in chakras to practice yoga. There are many yoga practices out there but most of them will not require any chanting nor any chakra visualization nor any prayer. Most yoga classes in studios today are focused on the physical aspect of yoga (aka Asanas) to give you a good sweat.

It is then up to you to choose your yoga path, there are as many paths to take than there are yoga styles or teachers out there.

All Yogis Are Lefties

Not everyone who is into yoga votes on the left side of the political spectrum! Having an interest in yoga and spirituality doesn’t necessarily mean you should get a lifetime membership to the Green Party or pin a poster of Blair above your bed.

Similarly, you don’t have to stop wearing suits and start hugging trees to be welcomed into the yoga world. Yoga teaches us to be who we are and to accept each other as we come.

You Must Wear Mala Beads And Drink Green Juice

The fashions and trends that are enjoyed by those who practice yoga aren’t essential to the practice itself! Sipping a bottle of something green may not be your cup of tea, and that’s totally fine. Many of the yogis that I know would opt for a cappuccino over a kale juice any day!

Also, let’s face it – we all know that whatever you’re wearing to class isn’t going to magically make you a pro. All you need for that is dedication, so don’t worry too much about finding the time to go bead shopping.

All Yogis Are Vegan

Being a yogi and being a vegan does not have to go hand in hand! Many people who practice yoga also practice the idea of ahimsa, which essentially translates to living a life free from violence – but as with all things yogic this is open to interpretation and you should always do what feels right for you.

You can absolutely love yoga and still love a burger too…or a cheese-loaded pizza – even that second serving of ice cream is never off limits!!

Simple Ways to Achieve Glowing Skin You Need to Know

Achieving glowing skin is the dream of many people. Because it makes you look great and irresistibly turn people’s heads as you pass by. That’s a big beauty goal achievement. But to achieve this, you must put in an extra effort by routinely practicing several best practices to turn your dull skin to radiance.

You have to combine skin safety measures with great products and know how to use them excellently.

So, if you are suffering from dull skin, here are secrets to a glowing skin unveiled for you:

  1. Routinely Exfoliate Your Skin

You must gently exfoliate your skin routinely, either once or twice a week through scrubs. Scrubs with sugar are best if you have sensitive skin. Because sugar scrubs are mild on your skin and won’t damage it or cause side effects. However, the grainy scrubs are okay with insensitive skin. And these may contain pulverized nutshells. These scrubs help to remove dead skin cells through the help of alpha and beta hydroxy acids.

For the best results, you should look for formulas containing soothing ingredients. For example, green tea and aloe because these minimize irritation.

  1. Wash Your Face at Night

There is a lot of pollution in the environment and this causes inflammation of the skin. Worst of all, polluted air has tiny particles like Sulphur dioxide and dirt. These create free radicals on your skin that damage collagen. And support pigment production. This also causes an uneven tone and texture which diffuses your skin light and makes it look dull. So, it’s safe to wash your face thoroughly well every night because the dirt damages your skin as you sleep. And it’s advisable to use soap and a cleansing brush to remove the pollution nanoparticles than manual cleansing.

Moreover, in the morning you can apply serums and lotions that are rich in antioxidants like vitamin c.

Washing your face is supplemented by using the best in makeup, skincare, hair & beauty products for the best results.

  1. Wear Sun Screen

Direct sun contact has great damage to your skin. Wondering how? It weakens your collagen which causes slack in your skin and turns it dull.

Think about it; can you get excited at seeing a new sunspot on your face? No.

And remember no skin treatment can be effective as long as you keep your skin exposed to direct sunlight. So, wear sunscreen and protect your existing collagen from break down. This plays a golden role in making your skin glow when the collagen is intact.

Win at Achieving a Glowing Skin

Achieving a glowing skin shouldn’t be uphill. You only have to routinely practice the best safety measures for your skin.

And use the best in makeup, skincare, hair and beauty products that match with your skin type.

It doesn’t matter whether your target is a simple home solution or a professional touch from a skin specialist. These simple ways will help you out.

The Struggle Is Real: A Mother Runner Moment in Glacier National Park

You might think this post is about hiking, swimming, bear sighting during our family vacation to Glacier National Park.

It is not, although we did hike, swim and sight a bear at a safe distance.

Or you might think this post is about biking the stunning Going to the Sun Road.

It is not, but I did conquer that beauty, and actually wished the 21-mile climb were longer just so I could soak up views like this.

You might think this post is about pushing my limits.

It is not, although I did take deep breath and launch myself off the Old Belton Bridge with my kiddos. (And yes, getting a picture was my main motivation for the leap.)

Instead, picture yourself at a campsite with four grills and picnic tables, already generously socially distanced before social distancing was a thing. Your posse (kids + husband + family of four you are traveling with) at one table at the end of the line. Another family of four, with what looks like two young teenage boys, at the other end. Two tables separate you.

You have two teenagers: one fourteen, one seventeen. The older bought a portable hammock with some birthday money, and the younger one is constantly pecking, asking to put it up/lie in it if it is up. The frequency with which the hammock conversation occurs is, quite frankly, unnecessary and annoying. But you have been able to ignore it; you’re on vacation.

Two hammocks. The orange pattered one belongs to Amelia. The blue one belongs to Isabel, her friend. Neither belongs to Ben.

But now? Now you’re hangry. You’re hot and have a sunburn on your neck and dirt under your fingernails and bug bites on your leg. Plus, you got your period unexpectedly, and are mentally rallying to drive the 15 minutes you need for Super Plus tampons. Your daughter’s pencil thin ones don’t cut it.

The tangerine LaCroix you guzzled wasn’t as refreshing as you wanted it to be, and there’s no room for you to sit down at the picnic table. And you’ve got to chop a bunch of veggies so your (picky) kids can have a few vitamins this trip.

The hammock banter begins again.

“I am going to go get it out of our tent and put it up,” says Ben.

“No you’re not,” says Amelia, “It belongs to me!”

“But you haven’t used it on this part of the trip,” he says.

“I don’t care. It’s mine!”

And then, out of nowhere, you yell. At a volume you reserve for those special FIRST MIDDLE LAST NAME: GET DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW occasions at home.

“Quiet! I am SO SICK OF HEARING ABOUT THE HAMMOCK! Stop it now. Don’t SAY ANOTHER WORD ABOUT IT. Enough! EITHER ONE OF YOU!”

Silence at the campground.

Embarrassment at the campground.

The parents with whom you’re traveling likely get it; they’ve been around for a couple of days and are as sick of it as you are. But the parents at the other table? They seem so quiet, such a happy, cooperative family.

You don’t really know how, but your table’s chatter returns to what’s on the docket for tomorrow. You eat an excellent meal—chicken and steak and grilled veggie skewers—and wash it down with a refreshing lager, and you feel much better. Even your bug bites seemed to have shrunk.

Tossing a bag of garbage, you pass the mom from the other table on the grass, and think about saying something like, “Sorry for the eruption. Long day.” But you decide against it. It feels like hours ago.

That happy family of four finish their dinner, and start playing a game of cornhole. As you walk towards your car to head into town, the mom says, “Dimity? The Mother Runner?”

Embarrassment at the campground.

“Um, yes. Hi! What’s your name?”

“Brigitte. From Portland.”

Immediately, the dad chimes in. “We were so relieved to hear you yell at your kids; now we know we’re not the only ones.”

Phew. Connection at the campground.

You chat for a bit with Brigitte and her husband, and laugh about how travel is great, but you’re still with the same people you’ve quarantined with for five straight months. This COVID thing? Hard for everyone, even when you’re grilling steak skewers and planning a glorious hike through Glacier National Park tomorrow.

You drive to the store, relieved they have Super Plus tampons. You throw in a pack of Peanut M’n’M’s to enjoy on the drive back to the campground, and look forward to getting up and doing it all over again.

Home Air Purifying Devices – Improving Indoor Air Quality for Better Health

Air pollution has become a major environmental health hazard in recent years. According to WHO, millions of deaths across the globe are caused by air pollution that contributes to the overall poor air quality.

The COVID-19 global pandemic crisis only worsened our fears about the air that we breathe not only when we’re outdoors, but has spurred concerns over indoor air quality, too.

Even when most of us are still on lockdown, we are looking for ways and products that will help mitigate the spread of the virus and promote overall health of our family, too.

Here are some home air purifying devices worth considering if you want to establish excellent indoor air quality for health promotion and disease prevention purposes.

1. HEPA-Filter Air Purifying System

High-Efficiency Particulate Air or HEPA-type air filter technology for home use has been around for many years now. It does an excellent job of filtering microscopic particles including viruses, bacteria, and fungi to name a few.

Based on existing air quality standards, a quality HEPA filter has the ability to filter and trap at least 99.97% of particulate matter, with sizes no smaller than 0.3 microns. In essence, it can trap any particle that is invisible to the naked eye.

2. Carbon Filters

Carbon air purifying systems utilise porous-type activated carbon in powdered block or granular form to trap airborne particles. Due to its extremely porous nature, a small quantity can occupy a large surface area, ensuring the filtration and absorption of large volumes of air contaminants.

This home air purifying device uses the process of absorption to causes components to stick to carbon filters, making it an excellent choice for those who want to remove strong and unpleasant odours like smoke indoors.

3. Humidifier and Air Purification Device

Cold air is unable to retain too much moisture hence we usually suffer from cracked and dry skin during winter. To properly deal with the effects of dry skin on our health and wellness, installing a humidifier with air purification capabilities is inarguably a wise investment.

A humidifier device alone brings about challenges, including increased humidity levels. A humid environment is the perfect breeding ground for microscopic particles including bacteria, viruses, and moulds that are dangerous to health. It is then important to pick a humidifier that has air purifying features, too.

4. Ionic Air Purifier

An ionic purifier is inspired by high-technology purification system that utilises ion generators to send out a continuous stream of negatively charged ions.

When air particles such as pollutants come into contact with these ions, they become too heavy and ultimately drop down the floor, which are then swept or vacuumed away.

5. Ozone Air Purifier

Also called as an ozone generator, this device is an ideal solution if you want to eliminate nasty odours indoors. The device generates ozone that targets gas particles that compromise overall indoor quality.

In terms of removing harmful air particles, it does not offer the same high-performance filtration efficiency as leading HEPA-filter air purifying systems and ionic air purifiers.

6. UV Air Purifier

UV air purifiers are the best home air purifying device in these trying times. It has the ability to kill disease-causing air particles, ranging from bacteria to viruses that may enter and linger inside your home. These devices use the germ-killing power of ultraviolet light to enhance overall indoor air quality.

If you want to ensure your family’s health and wellness, air purifying systems that generate UV-C light is recommended. They target and eliminate the core DNA of bacteria and viruses that may pose danger to human health.

7. Antibacterial and Germicidal Air Purifying System

Air purifying devices that have antibacterial and germicidal features make use of technologies including UV light, heat sterilisation, and natural silver to eradicate the population of pathogens that compromise home indoor air quality.

This is an excellent indoor air purifying device for your home if you or a family member is suffering from respiratory conditions including colds, sore throat, and the flu. This home purifying device may have a standard filtration system or may also be combined with HEPA-type filters, too.

Now that you have a better understanding of various home air purifying devices, you can choose one that delivers optimum benefits to you and your loved ones.

Crustless Quiche Lorraine

I love making crustless quiche for weekend brunches. They are so simple to make. Plus, since there’s no crust, not only is it healthier, but it’s also quicker to prepare. You can mix all the ingredients the night before so it’s ready to bake when you wake up. This Quiche Lorraine is made with Bacon and Gruyere, but you can also try my Ham and Cheese Crustless Quiche, Crustless Broccoli and Cheese Quiche, or if you want the crust this Spinach Ricotta Tomato Quiche is delicious.
