Princess Diana’s Iconic Short Hairstyle Was a Spontaneous Decision

Princess Diana graced us with many iconic looks, but perhaps none more lasting than the trademark short hairstyle she sported during the final years of her life. It turns out, the signature look was the result of an impulsive haircut.

In a new video for British Vogue, legendary Scottish hairstylist Sam McKnight opened up about his relationship with the late royal and how that iconic look came to be. The pair met for the first time on a shoot for British Vogue, during which they had a “really lovely day.” While playing around with her hair, McKnight recalls making it look short under the tiara she was wearing. “I faked it a bit,” he says.

But Princess Diana surprised McKnight — who has also worked with the likes of Lady Gaga and Kate Moss — at the end of the shoot when she asked him what he would do with her hair if he could do anything he wanted.

A post shared by Sam McKnight Personal (@sammcknight1)

“I said, ‘I would cut it all off and just start again,'” McKnight explains. “It was the beginning of the ’90s and it was at the time that I was doing lots of shows and covers and a lot of the girls had short hair. We were moving on from the big frou-frou ’80s into the sharp, more androgynous, business-chic of the ’90s.”

Princess Diana’s reply? According to McKnight: “She said, ‘Well, why don’t you just cut it off now?’ So I cut it off and then we never looked back.”

McKnight also recalls some of his other favourite memories working with Princess Diana, including one Vogue cover she was particularly proud of that showed off her nails, which she had recently stopped biting, and the moment she even met his mom near her Scottish village.

“One of my mum’s friends shouted out, ‘This is Sam’s mum,'” he says. “And for some reason the Princess knew exactly who she was talking about and went over and spoke to her and that made my mum’s day. I think for me that was probably the most pride I’ve ever felt in my job.”

At another point in the video, McKnight also talks about working on another Vogue cover with Emma Corrin, who, of course, played Princess Diana in the most recent season of The Crown.

“From one Princess Diana to another,” he says with a chuckle, remembering that the shoot was actually his first job after the U.K.’s first lockdown ended last summer. “I remember when the job came in I wasn’t quite sure that I was the right person to do this… It felt weird.”

But, obviously, he got over that feeling and went on to do the shoot with Corrin. “Actually it was a pleasure, and Emma was a pleasure,” McKnight explains. “I was quite taken by how alike Emma was to Princess Diana in her looks. And she was such a lovely girl that any doubts and fears were laid.”

Corrin isn’t the only actor to recently portray the beloved royal on screen. Tenet star Elizabeth Debicki is set to take over the role in the next season of The Crown (though we haven’t actually gotten a look at her in action yet), while Kristen Stewart is currently filming the upcoming biopic Spencer. We have gotten a couple of sneak peaks of Stewart in the film — which reportedly takes place over a weekend in December 1991, when Princess Diana is with the rest of the royal family for Christmas at Sandringham and decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles — in which she’s sporting the famous bob and looks eerily similar to the late royal.

Celeb Hairstylist Kirsten Klontz On the One Hot Tool You Need to Achieve These 3 Trendy Looks From Home

With warm weather on the horizon, hot girl season is quickly approaching and that’s the perfect time to try out all the latest hair trends—from glassy bobs to curtain bangs, to beach waves. Celebrity Hairstylist and Hot Tools® Professional Black Gold Ambassador Kirsten Klontz say you only need one tool to achieve these looks and it’s the same one she uses on her a-list clients such as Kristin Cavallari, Jessie Reyez and Brooke Lynn Hytes. And since we still can’t get to our own salon (thank you, pandemic), we sat down with Klontz *virtually* to find out her secrets to achieving salon-level styling results at home along with all the details on the #FashionForAll Beauty Award-winning flat iron that’s always in her pro kit. (Full disclosure: I was a member of the judging panel for the awards).

You’ve probably used a ton of flat irons in your career. Which one is your favourite?

The Hot Tools Professional® Black Gold Evolve 1” Flat Iron is the one in my kit because it’s the most versatile for a wide range of clients. It’s got curved edges so I can straighten or curl with it, the size is easy to handle, and it has a soft, non-slip grip. The plates are infused with a ceramic micro shine so it gives a really nice, glossy shine, and it won’t catch on the cuticle, so you won’t get any “drag” as it flows through the hair. Plus, the titanium plates won’t chip, which is important when I’ve got them on for 10-hour shoots, and I’m constantly dropping them on cement floors!

There’s been a lot of talk about the return of Y2K fashion, channelling pop princesses such as Christina Aguilera. What is your #1 tip for achieving that iconic, stick-straight hair?

That was me in my early twenties! Don’t try to straighten it all at once—it’s important to section your hair. I like to start at the bottom and work my way up, working in one-inch pieces. That’s what will produce that root-to-end look with a glossy finish.

Evolve with Hot Tools A Shag Styling video inspired by the one and only Miley Cyrus using the award winning Evolve Flat Iron

What if you have wavy or curly hair?

Start building in smoothing products while it’s still wet. Blow it out first, using heat and tension to help stretch the hair. I love the one-step hair dryer with a round brush from Hot Tools® Professional Black Gold Series—you can take big sections of hair and actually get through it really fast. And then go over it with your flat iron overtop, to get that high-shine finish.

What temperature would you recommend for fine hair versus coarse hair, so that you’re not frying it?

Prep with a heat-protective spray to help avoid damage. I would start at around 325 degrees for fine hair, while coarser hair can accommodate higher heat. If you see steam coming off of your hair, turn it down until you don’t see that anymore.

What’s a pro hack for flyaways?

If I’m working on a cover shoot and it has to be super sharp around the part line, I’ll use a little hairspray and then take a curling iron and hold the flyaways down, as close to the root as possible, so they set lying flat.

Another popular pandemic style has been curtain bangs. Would you use a flat iron for that?

Yes! The key to curtain bangs is that they kind of come forward and then kick back around your temple area to frame the eyes. Starting at the root, you just bend the hair to where you want it to go, and then tap the flat iron down, then bend the section the other way and tap, to lock in an “S” shape. Repeat on both sides of your face, and then brush it out.

And you can use a flat iron to achieve beach waves as well?

People are always surprised by how easy it actually is. Grab a wide section, then starting at the root and holding the flat iron horizontally, run the flat iron down a few inches and flick your wrists upwards; hold; go down a few inches and flick your wrists downwards; hold, and repeat that pattern until you reach the bottom. Finish with beach spray. There’s so much you can do with a hot iron, you just need to know the techniques.

Klontz’s beloved Hot Tools Professional Black Gold Evolve 1” Flat Iron was a winner in FASHION’s 20th annual #BeautyForAll Awards. Out of hundreds of entries, 72 winning products were selected between six gender-neutral categories: hair care, body care, skincare, fragrance, clean and cosmetics. The winners were selected by a panel of judges led by FASHION’s Beauty Director Natasha Boateng.

Nordstrom Beautycycle Has Officially Launched in Canada

It’s about to get a lot easier to recycle your beauty products in Canada thanks to the Nordstrom Beautycycle program.

Starting today, the retailer will accept empty beauty product packaging, regardless of brand, at any Nordstrom Canada store. The goal is make sure that hard-to-recycle packaging isn’t sent straight to landfill. (Of 120 billion units of plastic packaging produced globally by the beauty industry, less than a mere nine percent is actually recycled.)

The move makes Nordstrom — which first launched the program stateside last year — the first major retailer in Canada to offer a catch-all beauty-focused recycling program.

So how does it work?

In Nordstrom beauty departments nation wide, customers will find TerraCycle Zero Waste boxes where you can simply drop off your empties. Once full, the contents will be sent off to the the recycling company to properly be cleaned, sorted and recycled.

Most packaging is accepted by the Nordstrom Beautycycle initiative, but there are some limitations. Shampoo and conditioner bottles and caps, lip balm tubes, lotion bottles and dispensers, and mascara tubes, for example, are all okay, while items like aerosol cans, perfume bottles and nail polish packaging cannot be recycled through the program.

Nordstrom set a sustainable goal of its own through the program. By 2025, the brand aims to take back 100 tons of beauty packaging. This is on top of the retailer’s previous sustainability objectives, including committing to, among other things, reducing single-use plastic by 50 percent and ensure that 15 percent of all of its products are sustainable.

Catherine O’Hara Has Been Winning Awards Season

Another awards show has come and gone and the cast of Schitt’s Creek has once again found themselves on the winning side of things. This time, the gang took their winning streak to the 2021 SAG Awards.

The beloved Canadian sitcom picked up the top prize for best comedy ensemble at yesterday’s pre-recorded Zoom ceremony. But it was a big night, in particular, for Catherine O’Hara, who won best female actor in a comedy series for her turn as Moira Rose in the show’s final season (beating out, among others, her co-star Annie Murphy). And, if nothing else, the Canadian icon’s win cemented a certain truth: She’s been totally winning awards season. Here’s how.

A record-setting win

With her latest win, O’Hara joins a very exclusive club. She’s now only the fourth person in history to win all five major TV acting awards in a single season. The SAG completed her the record awards run, but, of course, she had already won the Emmy, Critics Choice Award and Golden Globe earlier this year for her work on Schitt’s Creek final season. O’Hara’s path to the impressive sweep started last year when she won the Television Critics Association Award for Individual Achievement in Comedy — which, we should note, isn’t divided into gendered categories like most major awards ceremonies.

And more wins may be in the cards for the Toronto-born actor. O’Hara picked up yet another nod last week when the Canadian Screen Awards nominees were announced.

Red carpet-worthy fashion

Celebs have not let this mostly virtual awards season impact their fashion game — O’Hara included. For the 2021 SAG Awards, the star wore a sequinned Thom Browne skirt and jacket, with a silk corset vest, white tuxedo shirt, a black bow tie and Chopard jewellery.

It was just the latest in a long line of great O’Hara looks. At the most recent Golden Globes, she sported a custom Vera Wang suit in a Moira Rose-esque print — a tribute to her character — while she went full glam for last year’s Emmys in a black strapless Valentino dress worn over a sequinned turtleneck, which she gave a little edge by pairing with combat boots.

And, naturally, O’Hara’s Schitt’s Creek co-stars also dressed to impress last night. The Levy family was able to be together for the pre-recorded show, with Eugene wearing a dapper Prada suit and Sarah (who played Twyla) in a pretty blush Monique Lhuillier gown. And Dan Levy came with not one but two covetable looks. He started the evening in a chic custom cream suit by The Row and Cartier jewels (including a stunning brooch) before changing into a burgundy Dries Van Noten outfit.

Memorable speeches

Of course, we’d be remiss to neglect O’Hara’s trail of heartfelt speeches she’s given while accepting each award. We’ll never forget the sweet shoutout she gave to her hair and makeup and styling teams on Schitt’s Creek at the Emmys using vocabulary only Moira Rose could pull off, and while her Golden Globes bit (aided by her husband) was impeded by some technical difficulties, it was still LOL-inducing.

But there’s one moment from O’Hara’s SAGs speech, during which she also thanked Dan and Eugene Levy, that we’ll always remember fondly. “I share this with Annie Murphy,” she said, honouring her co-star who was competing in the same category. “I’m flattered anyone might believe I could be her mother. She is a beautiful soul.” A fitting reminder that after all the accolades, there’s still so much love between the cast.

Regé-Jean Page Is Not Returning for Season 2 of Bridgerton

This article was originally published in February 2021.

If you’re anything like us, you recently spent a solid eight hours living in Lady Whistledown’s world, enraptured by actor Regé-Jean Page’s spoon-licking and imagining what life would be like as a Bridgerton duchess.

Based on a series of young adult books by Julia Quinn, the first season of Bridgerton revolved around the life of dashing duchess-to-be, Daphne Bridgerton, and her hard-headed, eventual husband Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. The world of 19th century England bustles around them, with the fanciest of clothing, the juiciest of gossip, the most dramatic of balls and, of course, the most fiery of romances. The first season dropped in December last year, and the word is we have more jaw-dropping Regency-era fashion, steamy sex scenes and casting diversity to look forward to in the upcoming second season.

Until it’s released on Netflix and we can commiserate with our on-screen loves once more, here’s everything we know — so far! — about season 2 of Bridgerton.

Will there be a Bridgerton season 2?

Executive producer Shonda Rhimes et al will be blessing Bridgerton lovers with a second season. While there’s no official release date as of yet, the second season will be in production by spring of this year, per a @shondaland Instagram post and an official press release from Netflix.

Season 2 of Bridgerton will focus on Anthony Bridgerton’s love life

In an interview with Today, the show’s creator Chris Van Dusen teased that eligible bachelor Anthony will be getting a lot more screen time in season 2. “Anthony is going to have a love interest and it’s going to be as sweeping and as beautiful as viewers have come to expect from the show,” he told the publication.

Fan of the books know that the next novel in the series, The Viscount Who Loved Me, focused heavily on a certain strong-willed woman, Kate, promenading into Anthony’s heart (and breeches — see image below for said breeches).

Who will join the cast for Bridgerton season 2?

Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) will have a new young woman to gossip about come season 2. British actress Simone Ashley, known for her roles in Netflix’s Sex Education and Broadchurch, will join the cast as Kate Sharma, Anthony’s love interest.

In the official description of The Viscount Who Loved Me, Kate is described as a “spirited schemer” and the “most meddlesome woman to ever grace a London ballroom.” Um, sign us up.

Is Regé-Jean Page really not coming back for the second season of Bridgerton?!

Tragically — for us, and the spoon — Page, who played the Duke of Hastings in season 1, will not be reprising the role in season 2. The official Shondaland Instagram account shared the news on April 2, writing (from the desk of Lady Whistledown, naturally): “Dear Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings.” The caption continued: “We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family. Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.” Many fans in the comments shared desperate pleas, hoping this was a late April Fool’s joke, but at the time of publication, the news appeared to be legit, with Page sharing his own farewell post on the platform.

Can we expect to see more extravagant Bridgerton dresses in season 2?

Aside from the tantalizing love scenes, forbidden romance, and rampant gossip, the costumes are the hit of the show — and we’re going to see way more where they came from.

The lush costumes featured on Bridgerton are impressive pieces of craftsmanship. The hands and heart behind the designs is 71-year-old New York native Ellen Mirojnick, also known for her work in Fatal Attraction (1987), Wall Street (1987) and Basic Instinct (1992).

Mirojnick created about 7,500 pieces making up a total of 5,000 on-screen costumes, she told Vogue last year. In 2019, Quinn shared images of Mirojnick’s moodboard for the show, heavily influenced by the Regency period in London.

Penelope Featherington might get a bit of the spotlight, too

The final scene of season 1 showed Penelope Featherington (Derry Girls‘ Nicola Coughlan) riding away in a horse-drawn carriage, implying that perhaps she knew a thing or two about the identity of the mysterious Lady Whistledown. It seems like the show’s second season will present an opportunity for Penelope to step into the spotlight.

“I’d love to go on that journey with her, to see how she’s changed,” she said in a December 2020 interview with the U.K.’s Radio Times. “I’d really love to come back because I feel like we’ve just scratched the surface.”

Lovers of Quinn’s novels know that Penelope’s time for romance is coming soon, if not in season 2 then the next.

Will we finally find out who Lady Whistledown is?

In season 1, Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) and Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) are dead-set on uncovering the true identity of Lady Whistledown. (Warning: minor season 1 spoiler ahead.)

(Photography by Liam Daniel/Netflix)

By the end of the first season, we get a hint that one Penelope Featherington might either be Lady Whistledown, or be helping her. Will the identity of the elusive Lady W ever be confirmed?

You’ll have to watch season 2 along with us to find out.

With Earth Month around the corner, we can expect to see many brands launching new sustainability-minded products and initiatives in the coming weeks. Toronto-based, hand-crafted jewellery label Oremme — which is already a member of the environmental initiative 1% for the Planet — wants your unwanted gold jewellery. Why? So it can be melted down for future use. The brand just announced its Gold Recycling Program, which asks customers to send in gold jewellery that they no longer use for a store credit (based on karat weight); Oremme will then melt the gold down to use in new pieces.

Founder Emilie Nolan notes in a press release about the program: “Gold has infinite lives, whether that’s a chain that has broken, earrings that have lost their match, or a piece you’re ready to release. In addition to our made-to-order model and 1% for the Planet commitment, recycling this material is another layer of consciousness I’m excited to offer our clientele.”

The range of pieces — which includes softly structured separates, flowy dresses and accessories — speak to an all-encompassing approach to daily life, acknowledging a new reality where our activities are more integrated and have an emphasis on ease. “Our days are becoming more condensed with different parts of our lives existing in the same place. Through comfort and simplicity, I wanted these clothes to give a sense of space and allow us to transition easily between different parts of ourselves, so we can reclaim a sense of identity.”

From Marc Jacobs to Dolly Parton, Here’s What Celebs Are Wearing to Get Vaccinated

Sure, you could wear a t-shirt and leggings to get a shot in the arm, but folks like Marc Jacobs, Dolly Parton and Jeff Goldblum are here to provide some delightful alternatives for vaccination day. Sporting everything from a blinged-out face mask to a velvet robe, these celebrities have made getting their COVID-19 vaccines a veritable style statement. (And honestly, who can blame people for wanting to make an event out of anything that gets you out of the house?)

Although adults, including politicians, celebrities and athletes, began receiving their vaccines as early as December 2020 in the U.K. and January 2021 in the U.S., each country has its own vaccination roll-out plan, including for us Canadians, with the elderly and essential workers receiving priority at the time of publication.

So while it may be some time still until we all get our moment in the chair, in the meantime we can plan what we’ll be wearing for the big day by looking to our famous neighbours to the south. And, in these continuously unprecedented times, we’ll hold on to that, thank you very much.

Here are a dozen celebrity vaccination fashion statements to inspire you.

Amy Schumer

To get a dose of the COVID vaccine, comedian Amy Schumer wore a gold sequinned gown with what look like DIY cut-outs in the upper arm. We love the enthusiasm for the special occasion!

Marc Jacobs

It’s hard to beat Marc Jacobs’s recent look, which included everything from bright pink, sequinned Comme des Garçons shorts, a matching pink Balenciaga button-up, a leopard print coat hanging off the shoulder (to accomodate the jab, of course) and white platform Rick Owens boots. All in all, he somehow topped the almost-as-glam look he sported when he went for his first dose in early March.

Dolly Parton

Parton went in sparkling when she got “a dose of her own medicine” in early March, after donating $1 million to fund Moderna research toward a vaccine in 2020. Sporting a glittery top with aptly placed cut-outs on her upper arms, Parton also had on a matching indigo face mask.

Jane Fonda

In a rare casual look, Fonda opted for a white sleeveless button-up — convenient! — along with a double face mask, what appear to be vintage tinted sunglasses and her impossibly chic natural grey locks. During a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she said, “I do [like my hair] too. I tell you, I’m so happy I let it go grey.”

He wrote, “It’s a very special day. Anyone who has lived as long as I have is alive because they have had previous vaccinations, the take up amongst the older generation will be 100 percent — it ought to be — because you’re having it not just for yourself but for people who you are close to – you’re doing your bit for society.”

Nancy Pelosi

However you feel about her politics, one thing Pelosi knows is polished style — and good posture. The U.S. Speaker of the House posed like a true politician while wearing a dark plaid shift dress with matching heels and perfectly highlighted hair. Now that’s a photo op.
