Apricotton Founders Talk Taking the Trouble Out of the Tween Bra Shopping Experience

For many young female-identifying shoppers, the experience of buying a first bra is daunting. Not only is it an unfamiliar product category to explore, but the messaging around such items — either hyper-sexualized à la Victoria’s Secret, or woefully juvenile — can be a turn-off to anyone who already feels caught between the identities of adolescent and adult.

Two recent Western University grads, Chloe Beaudoin and Jessica Miao, had their own struggles as tweens while trying to find undergarments that were relevant to both their needs and tastes, and more recently, Jessica’s sister was also finding it difficult to seek out a bra that spoke to her. And it prompted them to launch Apricotton, a forward-thinking brand that puts the wants of its young customers first.

“We were discussing it one day [and realized] there hadn’t been any innovation in the bra industry in decades,” recalls Beaudoin of the ideation for the label, which launched last November. “We thought, why don’t we make that difference for those girls?”

Both Beaudoin and Miao studied business while at university, but admit that their interest in fashion motivated them to be more active in the design elements of their fledgling company. They also went straight to the source for suggestions. Jessica took her sister “shopping” to determine what bra styles she was drawn to, and found ones that were white, tan and black, didn’t have rounded cups, and had thinner straps were most appealing.

“We took all those elements to use in our designs,” Miao says. Apricotton’s current selection of three underwire-free styles boast removable padding, convertible straps, and a moisture-wicking fabric that stretches to fit; they also sell a scrunchie bundle. And they’re working on new pieces to launch later this spring. “We’re excited for what’s coming next,” Beaudoin shares.

Apricotton fans — and those new to the brand — should be equally enthused. Initially gathering information from the young women around them for feedback, the duo have been able to augment their understanding of what their customers want thanks to the connectivity afforded by the social media sphere. “We don’t want to be seen as just another bra brand,” Beaudoin notes. “We want to help girls feel confident while going through an awkward stage.”

This has spurred them on to create thoughtful content for their community, ranging from advice on handling peer pressure and bra shopping tips for transgender teens to home remedies for period pain. There’s a level of trust, empathy and awareness exuded by Apricotton’s efforts that’s undeniable. And Miao adds that they receive countless messages from customers and their parents, with one mom stating that she cried when her daughter put one of their styles on as they’d been searching for the right bra for so long.

Beaudoin and Miao’s inherent understanding of the issues around the tween and teen experience has been a boon to them on the business side as well, helping them to combat imposter syndrome and intimidation since they’ve lived the experience they’re now working to change.

“A lot of the time we’d be pitching our idea to men, which we were scared about,” Beaudoin says of the brand’s start. “Of course, men don’t understand bra shopping, and bra shopping for tweens is a taboo topic to talk about. We’d get nervous having to pitch in front of them. But we got a lot of positive feedback from them because they didn’t even understand this was an issue. Being able to explain it through a story — that we’ve gone through this, Jessica’s sister is going through this, and millions of girls are going through this right now — makes it easier for them to visualize, and the solution is easier than people think. It’s just that no one has ever thought of the tweens first. We’re putting these girls first.”

Beaudoin and Miao are also actively part of a “first” with the launch of their brand, and have this to share with anyone considering taking the plunge into entrepreneurialism. “I think the biggest thing that might stop someone from pursuing their idea is thinking they don’t have the expertise,” Miao says, addressing how vital crowdsourcing, finding mentors and connecting with fellow entrepreneurs was, and is, for building Apricotton. “We didn’t have a fashion background but we were able to do it.”

Chloe adds that it’s perhaps because of this that they have found success. “It was nerve-wracking,” she says about tailoring their brand to craft seasonless pieces that are more about function than trend. “It’s not about the ‘fashion’ of it, it’s about how it makes someone feel.”

Sandra Oh Gives Impassioned Speech at a Stop Asian Hate Protest

“I am proud to be Asian. I belong here.”

Those were the words Sandra Oh chanted during a surprise appearance at a Stop Asian Hate protest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 20. The Korean-Canadian actress spoke to the crowd at the rally, giving an impassioned speech about supporting Asian Americans.

The event was held in response to rising violence against Asian Americans, and took place just days after a deadly shooting spree in Altanta, Georgia that killed six Asian women.

“Thank you to all the organizers for organizing this just to give us an opportunity to be together and to stand together and to feel each other,” Oh said. “For many of us in our community, this is the first time we are even able to voice our fear and our anger and I really am so grateful to everyone willing to listen.”

The Killing Eve star continued: “I’m going to be very brief, but one thing that I know is many of us in our community are very scared, and I understand that. And one way to kind of go through and get through our fear is to reach out to our communities. I will challenge everyone here, if you see something, will you help me? If you see one of our sisters or brothers in need, will you help us?”

Oh’s speech was captured on video by CBS Pittsburgh, which you can watch in full below.

Over the weekend, the Ottawa-born actress also shared a post about the Atlanta killings on Instagram, as well as links to support Asian American communities. Despite authorities’ refusal to label the murders a hate crime, there is widespread belief that they were racially motivated. “I send loving kindness and support to the families of the eight souls murdered in Georgina on March 16. And to all victims of racist violence,” Oh wrote. “I am devastated and profoundly angry. I know many of you are scared but let us not be afraid.”

She also included the hashtag #rememberitsanhonorjusttobeasian; Oh first said those same words at the 2018 Emmys when she was the first Asian woman to be nominated for a best lead actress in a drama category.

What’s the Difference Between Maskne and Maskitis?

If we’d told you a year ago that the word maskne would soon become a regular part of your skincare vocabulary, you probably wouldn’t have believed us. But as it turns out, a staggering 12 months later, the very 2020 skincare condition remains a common concern for many of us. Now that face masks have become a normal part of our lives, so has maskne (i.e. acne lesions that pop up in the areas that masks cover, due to inflammation, friction, irritation and/or trapped sweat and heat). And as such, we’ve learned to properly treat it.

Maskne

Or have we?

Dr. Dennis Gross, New York City board-certified dermatologist, celebrity go-to and founder of the beloved skincare brand of the same name, says he’s seen a massive spike in patients coming into his office thinking they have maskne when they actually have something else: maskitis.

Maskitis

We caught up with Dr. Gross to learn the difference between the two, and most importantly, how to diagnose and treat maskne and maskitis.

What are some of the ways someone can identify whether they’re dealing with maskne or maskitis?

“You can identify each condition visually: maskne is acne that forms around the mouth and nose caused by COVID-19 protection such as face masks or shields, while maskitis appears as small bumps — but not acneic — and can also appear on skin that is not under the mask,” explains Dr. Gross. “I have seen countless patients come into my practice thinking they have maskne when they actually have maskitis. For treatment, they are reaching for acne products which is causing further irritation and inflammation. Instead, they need a product that is soothing, decreases inflammation and rebalances skin.”

What exactly is maskitis and how is it treated?

“Maskitis is a skin rash, marked by small bumps, redness, inflammation and dry, flaky skin caused by COVID-19 facial coverings. Niacinamide is the perfect ingredient to treat maskitis because it’s incredibly soothing. It reduces redness and inflammation and improves lipid barrier function which helps restore moisture.”

Is there a genetic component to these skin conditions?

There sure is! “Those who suffer maskitis typically have a gene variation for dry, reactive skin and are likely prone to dermatitis and eczema,” according to Dr. Gross. “Similarly, those who experience maskne typically have oily, acne-prone skin.”

Are acne treatments still the best method of treatment for maskne? Are there any ingredients in particular to look for?

“Acne treatments are the best way to treat maskne, however not all acne treatments are created equal. To tackle maskne, look for products that use a combination of strong, fast-acting ingredients with soothing and hydrating ones,” advises Dr. Gross. “For example, salicylic acid is great to decongest pores, azaleic acid to regulate oil chemistry, farnesol to kills acne-causing bacteria, and soothing ingredients like green tea and aloe to sooth inflammation and redness. Stay away from products that have benzoyl peroxide — it can be harsh on the skin and cause further irritation.”

Are there ways to prevent maskitis and maskne? Are the methods of prevention different?

“Unfortunately, as long as we’re required to wear face coverings, there is no real way to fully prevent maskne and maskitis,” says Dr. Gross. “However, you can treat both conditions and take steps to alleviate inflammation and irritation. For example, in the morning, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Afterwards, apply the remainder of your skincare routine — serum, eye cream, moisturizer and SPF — but only to the areas of the skin uncovered by a mask. It’s important that there’s no product or makeup under the mask because this will cause further irritation. Once you take off the mask, again wash your face with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water and then use your acne treatment for maskne or niacinamide serum for maskitis.”

Of course, if you’re still unsure if you’re dealing with maskne or maskitis, it’s always a good idea to book a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist near you.

Dyson & Mane Addicts Team Up to Support Salon Heroes + More Beauty News This Week

Diptyque’s latest fragrance is here

Meet Orphéon, the latest fragrance release from Diptyque. Launched on March 15, the eau de parfum is inspired by jazz clubs in Paris in the early 1960s. Notes of juniper berry, cedar, tonka bean and jasmine come together to create something that’s warm, joyful and celebratory. And isn’t that what we could all use right about now? Its name, Orphéon, was one of the bars where the three founders of the nearby Diptyque boutique liked to meet for a drink.

Dyson and Mane Addicts team up to support salon heroes affected by this challenging year

Mane Addicts, the hair trends brand founded by celebrity stylist Jen Atkin, has teamed up with Dyson to celebrate salon heroes impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic this past year. Starting this week, salon owners and stylists can submit their stories, and 20 to 25 will be chosen to receive Dyson products and be able to create content to live across Mane Addicts and Dyson platforms. Mane Addicts will also be choosing five to eight winners who will be invited to two Zoom education panels hosted by A-list stylists Jen Atkin, Pekela Riley and Matthew Collins. We caught up with Atkin and Collins to chat about the initiative.

“Our goal is to inspire the industry to keep pushing forward,” says Atkin. “Mane Addicts and Dyson want stylists to feel empowered and motivated after taking a hit this past year.” It’s certainly been a year unlike any other for everyone, and these stylists have come together to inspire their community to keep fighting. “It’s been a really rough year for so many hairstylists,” says Collins. “They’ve had their entire livelihoods taken away, which has caused morale to drop drastically, especially as creatives who thrive on daily interactions with clients. We wanted to highlight the heroes who made an effort to spread positivity and encouragement to others in such a dark time.” The main takeaway? Positivity is key. “As with so many industries, the salon industry was hit hard by COVID-19,” says Atkin. “But with 2020 behind us, the industry is looking ahead to a full rebound and recovery. Of course, salons will rebuild and come back strong but this isn’t something that will happen overnight. Just know that [the industry] will bounce back.”

Kaitlyn Bristowe Wants You to Chill About Body Odour

Kaitlyn Bristowe knows what it’s like to be in situations that would make anyone sweat. Take competing in the finale of Dancing with the Stars with some 60 million people watching (she won the mirrorball trophy, by the way) or dating a couple dozen men on national television as you search for a potential life partner as The Bachelorette. The Alberta-born Bristowe, who is returning to Bachelor nation as co-host of the upcoming seasons of The Bachelorette alongside fellow alum, Tayshia Adams, has been in some high-stress public scenarios. And yet, the host of the popular Off the Vine podcast decided to make the switch to natural deodorant a couple of years ago after crowd-sourcing suggestions about brands to try on Instagram. She says she hasn’t looked back.

Bristowe says her recent partnership with Schmidt’s, a brand beloved for its aluminum-free, Ecocert-certified natural formulas and scents derived from essential oils, not to mention 24-hour funk-fighting power, was a natural fit (no pun intended) because she was already a faithful user of the brand — she even wore it while competing on DWTS.

A post shared by Kaitlyn Bristowe (@kaitlynbristowe)

Here, FASHION chats with Bristowe about sweat-inducing situations, getting over the fear of body odour and her trick for never forgetting to apply deodorant.

When did you make the switch to natural deodorant and how did you deal with the fear that you’d be a little stinky while adjusting to it?

I made the switch around two years ago. It was really a big process for me to narrow down the best one because I did go through so many. I had heard horror story after horror story about the nasty ingredients that they were putting in the regular deodorant. So I just wanted something cleaner and more natural to put on my body.

We all cope with fear of body odour, the FOBO, if you will, and the transition period from mainstream to natural, but you have to trust the process. Schmidt’s made it pretty easy for me because it works and their products are super gentle on your skin, easily absorbed and go on really smooth. I’ve tried so many, but Schmidt’s worked for me. I really liked that they offered 24-hour protection, which gives me a lot of confidence.

How much does the scent of deodorant matter to you?

I think scent is so important. My favourite Schmidt’s one is the Lavender + Sage because it just feels like a tranquil spa relaxation [moment]. And the Charcoal Magnesium is really cool because it’s so fresh and it smells incredible.

Photography courtesy of Schmidt’s

What do you do if you forget to put deodorant?

I get FOBO and I have to deal with FOBO for the whole day! [Laughs] I should start carrying one in my purse or have an extra one just in case of that situation. But [to avoid forgetting to apply deodorant], I put it out with my skincare so I remember to put it on every morning as part of my routine.

You talk about trusting the process. Is there anything you did to cope with the fear of body odour as you transitioned to natural?

I reassured myself of the benefits because it’s really not that long of a process. At the end of the day, what is that short amount of time before switching to natural and feeling better about your decision?

A post shared by Kaitlyn Bristowe (@kaitlynbristowe)

Real talk: does natural deodorant hold up in really high-stress situations like a Dancing with the Stars finale or rose ceremony on The Bachelorette?

I can stand behind it and say that it did because I experienced it. That’s why I was so excited to partner with the brand because I have been using them for so long, so I really can stand behind the brand and say it took me through Dancing with the Stars [laughs]. Not only sweating from dancing, but from nerves as well!

What’s your approach to natural products in general?

I try to do research and look up products because I always tell myself that if I made the switch to natural deodorant two years ago, then I should really be invested in testing out other natural products. There are so many products out there, some even claim to be natural and aren’t, so it’s about doing the research and going on that journey and trying things for yourself.

Can You Buy Your Way to Better Sleep?

This article was originally published in June 2019.

Do you ever rest your head at night, toss back and forth under the covers, and think: “I have been going to bed every single night since the day I was born. Why is falling asleep still so hard?” At those moments, when counting sheep just won’t cut it, you might consider handing over all the cash in your wallet in exchange for a peaceful snooze. A full night’s rest is one of the pleasures in life that money can’t necessarily buy — though the pursuit of it has the potential to set you back thousands.

Bedtime has become a multi-billion dollar industry. As social media pushes us to achieve ultimate self-care — and as the world around us becomes increasingly chaotic — we’ve retreated to cozy, safe spaces. We surround our beds with lavish candles, Egyptian sheets, REM tracking devices, white-noise machines and gadgets that pump lavender oil into the air. Chasing flawless sleep is, ironically, exhausting.

However, there is some value to the products being pushed onto us via podcast ads, Instagram influencers and colourfully designed subway banners. Money is being pumped into research on mattress technology, snore-solving devices and ambient sleep tracks (like Headspace’s “Cat Marina”) in hopes of selling consumers a scientifically better slumber. Here are some of the modern sleep aids currently on the market, and what exactly they’re going to cost you.

The Millennial-Friendly Mattress

A sweet sleep starts with a solid (or rather, springy) foundation. Over the past few years, millennial-focused brands have reshaped the marketplace for mattresses: they’ve cut out the middleman by putting beds in a box, and have sold a generation the idea that mattresses can be cool. Casper wasn’t the first company to do it, but they’re the name you’ll likely think of first.

If you listen to podcasts or follow any sort of influencer on Instagram, you’ve come across Casper. Their clever use of content marketing has positioned them as a cultural touchstone for all things sleep and comfort. For a while, Casper — like most direct-to-consumer bed brands — only sold foam mattresses. In response to the growing customer demand for a little springier, Casper recently launched two new hybrid mattresses, which combine the embrace of foam with the support of steel coils to create a more resilient, responsive, supportive and breathable sleep surface. It’s the reimagined mattress, reimagined.

What it costs: $1775.00

The Personalized Pillow

Pluto takes the Gen X-savviness of Casper and applies it to customized pillows. By having interested customers complete an online quiz, the startup promises to identify the cushion that’s best suited for each individual’s sleep style. “Our proprietary model and pillow designs take a more scientific approach in which we create and personalize pillows to you based on your body stats, how you sleep, and your preferences,” explains founder Susana Saeliu. “This algorithm continues to improve with more orders and customer feedback.”

What it costs: $85.00

The 25-Pound Blanket

Drape a weighted blanket over your body and feel the tender comfort of a cocoon. The 10 to 20-pound sheets filled with pellets, balls, or chains and covered in fuzz trigger deep touch pressure stimulation, allowing your brain to release feel-good hormones like serotonin and oxytocin. With your stress eased, your eyes will soon shut. Plus, it’s a lot harder to reach for your phone when the weight of a toddler is holding you down.

What it costs: ~$200.00

The Smart Snoring Solution

This device is for the person who might be sleeping next to you, and for the good of your relationship. Unlike sticky nose strips and anti-snoring chin straps, Nora keeps you quiet without sacrificing your sex-appeal. The system includes a wireless mic, which sits on the snorer’s nightstand. When it hears your start to snore, Nora uses an “Expander” — which is essentially an air pump and an inflatable device that goes under your pillow — to gently shift the position of your head, stimulating your neck and throat muscles and opening your airways.

What it costs: $329.00

The Snoozy Sleepcast

Swap your nightly Netflix for something a little more mindful. Headspace, a popular meditation app, recently started producing “sleepcasts,” a nighttime audio series that promise to sweet talk listeners into a peaceful snooze. Sign up for an annual subscription, and you can fall asleep to a varied selection of ambient sounds with soothing voiceovers. The app features more than your typical campfire, rainforest and waves on the beach—though it includes those sounds too. More unique options include “Midnight Laundrette,” “Hummingbird Bungalow” and “Cat Marine.” The combination of purring and boat motors is sure to spark some fascinating dreams.

What it costs: $95.88 per year

The Lulling Lamp

Casper recently took a short jump from beds to bedside tables. Glow lights, described as the”magical light for better sleep,” slowly dim when it’s time for bed, and then gently mimic the rising sun as they turn on the next morning. The bedtime/wake-up ritual can last between 15 minutes and one and a half hours, and can be customized using a companion app. You can stop reaching for your phone when you suddenly wake at 3am in need of a glass of water, and instead, gently shake the Glow to activate a dim light that self-adjusts to the brightness of your bedroom.

What it costs: $140.00

The Sleep Tracker

You think your eight hours of shut-eye will have you well rested for the day ahead. But then, you wake up reaching for an x-large cup of caffeine. Each night, your body cycles through different sleep stages: light sleep, deep sleep and REM. Fitbit’s tracker uses sensitive motion detectors to measure your time spent in each sleep stage, to help you understand the quality of your sleep.

What it costs: $199.99
