Here’s How to Get Your Celeb Fix at TIFF 2020

Every September, celebrities take over the city of Toronto to premiere, promote and talk about their latest films. This year, of course, the Toronto International Film Festival will look very different. With no red carpet events, there won’t be any celeb sightings but that doesn’t mean the festival can’t still deliver some star power. TIFF Tribute Awards
This year, TIFF is launching the inaugural Tribute Awards to raise funds to support their year-round programming as well as their commitment to transforming the way people see the world through film. The Tribute Awards will honour the film industry’s outstanding contributors and their achievements, with Kate Winslet and Sir Anthony Hopkins receiving the very first Tribute Actor Awards. Also being recognized this year are directors Chloé Zhao and Mira Nair, emerging filmmaker Tracey Deer, and musician Terence Blanchard. The awards ceremony featuring special messages from the honourees will be broadcast at 8pm EST on Tuesday, September 15 on CTV and ctv.ca, and streamed internationally by Variety. Bonus: Shawn Mendes is scheduled to perform during the event, and will also be launching a brand new Changemaker Award through his eponymous foundation, to be awarded to a TIFF film that tackles issues of social change.

In Conversation with… Halle Berry
Halle Berry is at the festival this year with her directorial debut, Bruised. In this special virtual talk moderated by CBC’s Amanda Parris, the actress, producer and now director will look back on her 30-year career, discussing both the challenges she’s faced in the industry and the work she’s most proud of. In Conversation With… Saoirse Ronan
Following Lady Bird in 2017, the four-time Oscar-nominated actress is back at the festival this year with her new film Ammonite co-starring Kate Winslet. Speaking with Canadian writer Anne T. Kim Jones is Fendi’s New Artistic Director of Women’s Collections

Fendi surprised and delighted many today with its announcement that British designer Kim Jones is its new Artistic Director of womenswear, and that he will present his first collection with the venerable Italian house during next February’s Milan Fashion Week.

Jones, who has established himself as a true force of creativity and a leader in bucking gender norms while serving as Artistic Director at Dior Homme and in his past position at Louis Vuitton, is poised to have a unique role in a tumultuous industry landscape while managing these two commitments. “Working across two such prestigious houses is a true honour as a designer and to be able to join the house of Fendi as well as continuing my work at Dior Men’s is a huge privilege,” he said in a press release that went out this morning.

Jones joins Silvia Venturini Fendi, a third-generation member of the family-run house and creator of the Baguette bag, in the top tier of Fendi’s design structure. He will oversee haute couture, ready-to-wear and fur collections, while she will continue her role in creating accessories and men’s collections.

There are certainly big shoes to fill in this new adventure as Jones is taking on the position Karl Lagerfeld held from 1977 until his death last year. We got a glimpse at his warm, encouraging welcome into the Fendi fam after Silvia posted a sweet text between the two on Instagram earlier today. And in a year devoid of major creative leadership announcements–for obvious reasons, the news heralds something to look forward to at a time when we need it most.

Toronto Brand Jewels & Aces Wants to Simplify Your Jewellery Box

In a world where we can constantly feel overwhelmed and our closets are often oversaturated with stuff, Grace Wong– founder of Toronto jewellery brand Jewels & Aces –finds comfort in the creativity that comes from working within boundaries.

“I’ve always been passionate about jewellery, and I was looking at my overflowing jewellery box and thought, I’m just wearing the same pieces all the time,” she says about how she came up with the idea for her now two-year-old line. “That planted the seed for what’s become the earring capsule.”

Inspired by the jewellery worn by her mother and grandmother, Wong–whose background is in corporate accounting–wanted to explore the idea of creating a selection of earring styles that could be mixed and matched, no fuss, no muss. From teeny freshwater pearl studs to understated cuffs, the aim with her designs is to “reinterpret the jewellery I grew up around”, including the signet rings her mother collected. One ring’s emerald-cut silhouette was reimagined as emerald-cut studs, for example.

“It started with eight essential shapes,” Wong notes of her brand’s initial offerings–which have expanded to a variety of studs, huggies and ear jackets–adding with a laugh that the first limited launch was to “see if anyone else thinks the idea is cool besides me.”

Folks have indeed decided that Wong’s approach is cool; and it’s even cooler when you consider the pieces are crafted with recycled metals. “Being a self-taught designer, I didn’t really have a basis for, ‘This is how you make jewellery,’” she says. “I had to research and work backwards, [and] I had a fresh pair of eyes on it.”

Noting that she wanted to use precious metals in order to give Jewels & Aces pieces longevity, Wong discovered the ability to recycle metals without them losing their quality and she was immediately intrigued. “I thought, how can I not use them,” she says, going on to highlight the typical environmental repercussions in jewellery design including those of mining practices.

There’s also an inherent acknowledgement of fashion’s problem with excess that’s addressed in the brand’s purposefully modest size of wares, and Wong impresses the potential in working within the parameters set out by her brand with its Style Guides; she points to the element of “delight and joy” that comes from creating combinations with her pieces. “[You’re] wearing something that’s unique to you,” she says. Wong recalls that when she launched Jewels & Aces, she wasn’t sure “how to explain the concept.” Taking to Instagram to share how her pieces could be worn in different ways, she noticed her community was asking for more info, and saving and sharing the styling advice the brand was putting forth.

The idea of passing it forward goes even more deeply than the storytelling Wong does in her work; it’s at the core of her inspiration, too. Noting that her mother “commemorates occasions with jewellery”, she adds that the women in her family have also influenced how she looks at wearing jewellery and heirlooms. “They’ve told and passed down stories through their favourite pieces,” she says. “It was never about the value of them–whether they were fine or costume. It was really the stories they hold.”

Wellness Beyond Whiteness: Q+A with Jazreena Harlow

Jazreena Harlow is a transformational life coach with a focus on self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-mastery. She is also a crystal sonic therapist (aka sound healer) and founder of The Sistaship – a membership community that helps women to step out of overwhelm, guiding them through the introspective journey of finding themselves and getting into alignment with their soul’s purpose. 

She is fiercely committed to assisting women to have deeper connections with their hearts and intuition to reclaim their inner wisdom and sovereignty.

 

Wanderlust: Since the June events, have you noticed the actual change wellness companies, platforms and businesses have made towards becoming inclusive and diverse? We all know that actions speak louder than words.

Jazreena: There has been a shift in inclusivity for sure. Whether it’s genuine or not is another conversation but I have seen far more diverse feeds and increased representation in advertising and I’m all here for it.

 

Wanderlust: Would you say that the white-centrism in the wellness industry has affected the path of healing from trauma for Black people? To put in other words, Black People are less likely to find a solution for themselves due to underrepresentation?

Jazreena: I would agree that it is much harder for Black people to find the right therapy, yes. There has been a lack of understanding in all aspects of how racial disparity in healthcare affects the lives of black people. A lot of our trauma stems from the effects of systemic racism so you can see why it can be very difficult, almost impossible sometimes to access therapy in diasporas that aren’t typically aware of or accustomed to looking out for the wellbeing of black people. You only have to look at medical statistics in how this fails people of colour. Black women are more likely to suffer from mental health

issues and more likely to die during childbirth.

 

Wanderlust: Sound Therapy is an extremely white-washed territory with a certain stereotype of how a sound healer should look like. What are the key challenges you’ve faced as you’ve been establishing yourself in this space?

Jazreena: I think with most things my personal approach is to always find a seat at the table. I’m used to being in white-centric spaces, I grew up being the only black girl in my year at primary school. I was raised in an area that was predominantly white so I have the expectation in most spaces that I may be the only black person or black woman in the room-  even throughout my career.

Key challenges are just being visible first of all and then being seen as credible amongst others. I love what I do so and am good at what I do so I try not to let this create a barrier for me.

 

Wanderlust: On your Instagram, you addressed an issue of focusing on ‘higher vibrations’ as opposed to ignoring groundwork. Is this one of the problems with the holistic and spiritual world, as one can rely on sharing the “words of wisdom” and tick the box that she or he has done their work without actually driving the change?

Jazreena: Precisely, yes. I think it’s an easier pill for people to swallow. It takes the onus off people doing the real inner work. They can use the ‘illusion’ argument to not address their own unconscious biases. I’ve seen many comments from white people who perceive conversations about race as diversive and part of a distraction agenda. I have found reading these types of comments hurtful, very dismissive and disrespectful.

 

Wanderlust: What are the key resources you’d point people to educate themselves? Books, websites, podcasts, films.

Jazreena: As I’m from the UK, my suggestions are UK centric.

The result is a scent that is “like a spell,” says creative director Alessandro Michele.
