The Birds Papaya and Knix Are Back Again With Their Third Exclusive Papaya Box

The wait is (nearly) over. Knix, the beloved Canadian intimate brand, is back again with their third coveted Papaya Box, made in collaboration with Sarah Nicole Landry of The Birds Papaya.

From a shiny faux-leather bodysuit to the brand’s first pair of leggings, Landry has helped the brand curate and bundle some of its most unique and sought-after pieces.

After their first box sold out in just 27 minutes back in October 2020, the brand quickly re-stocked and decided to start planning for a second edition, which came out this past June. Now, they’re nearly ready to launch their third this Sunday, October 3rd—so get your refresh button ready.

“We had a 30,000 person waitlist, and we sold out in less than half an hour,” says Landry. “It was incredible. Little did everyone know, we were already in the works on box number three.”

This latest box, priced at $150, will feature the brand’s first-ever dress, a classic black satin slip, a versatile white mock neck bodysuit, and a vibrant satin knotted headband with sizes ranging from XS to XXXXL. The classic satin slip dress perfectly skims your silhouette for all-season style that can be easily dressed up or down; the bodysuit features a soft ribbed cotton blend loaded with stylish details like a high neck and thong back for seamless versatility; and the patterned headband adds a stylish pop of flair to any look.

“Slip dresses are kind of iconic, but the problem is that most of them aren’t designed with different body shapes in mind. We wanted to change that,” says Landry. “When we first talked about a slip dress, we loved its versatility. You could wear it casually by throwing a sweater over top, or you could layer it with a bodysuit. We wanted to help people (of all sizes) dial-up their existing looks with these pieces, not just offer single articles of clothing.”

This past month, Landry, Knix and the FASHION team joined forces to visually showcase the bundle’s versatility:

If you’re looking for a more elevated look, throw on your new favourite slip with a pair of heels and add a glitzy belt. In the mood for something more laid back? Pair the dress with a comfy sweater and your go-to booties. The bodysuit is just as versatile. You can layer it or make it the centrepiece of your look. For Landry, the key is to make it your own, which is what she was most excited to spotlight during the shoot.

“I’ve never done an edgy shoot like this before,” says Landry. “As a mom, I think it’s fun to finally get a chance to really glam up and represent these articles of clothing in such a cool way, I hope it inspires others to also make these looks their own and bring out the edge in them.”

Landry’s relationship with the coveted brand dates back to 2017. The digital content creator and mom of four first piqued the brand’s interest with an Instagram post of her wearing one of their pieces. Joanna Griffiths, founder and CEO, spotted Landry’s post and instantly reached out saying she wanted to include her in their next shoot.

“During that shoot, it was the first time I ever wore low-rise underwear,” says Landry. “I felt pretty vulnerable because it showed all my stretch marks—which was what made it go viral. I had never seen them presented in such an artistic way, and the positive response I got from that campaign made me realize there were so many other people like me.”

From that moment on, a friendship and partnership were born.

For Landry, a big focus when helping curate this latest box was ensuring that it was not only versatile but was suitable and flattering for every body shape.

“Our bodies are just a distraction to us,” says Landry. “If you’re constantly fidgeting with your clothes or adjusting them because they’re not comfortable or fit right, it becomes a distraction. When we’re distracted we’re not focused on what’s in front of us, the actually important parts of our lives. Clothing should always make us feel good and comfortable in our bodies, which is why it’s important to design inclusively.”

Landry says she was grateful to get the opportunity to trust and work with Knix’s designer to bring this vision to life, and they made sure to work with a variety of models, of all shapes and sizes, to ensure that the two pieces were flattering and comfortable on diverse bodies.
Finally, as a mom of four, Landry also says it’s important to offer a variety of styles for busy caregivers constantly on the go. While function and fit are incredibly important, it’s also vital for customers to feel confident and put together with minimal fuss.

“I think moms are resigned to this leggings-and-sweatshirts combo, which I live in and love, but that shouldn’t be it for us—that shouldn’t be the end of the line,” she says. “We should be able to wear whatever our hearts desire, not be steered away from certain looks or garments because we feel we can’t pull them off or comfortably wear them because we’re moms. It’s nice to have the option. Whether it’s for a date night out or lunch with girlfriends, these pieces will easily fit into anyone’s wardrobe and they can hang onto them forever.”

Why Sex Education Is The Internet’s Favourite Show

I shed actual tears when watching the most recent season of Sex Education. As someone who received a not-so-comprehensive sex ed in school, it feels life changing to see mainstream media embrace open dialogue with courage, honesty and humour. And I’m not alone — thanks to the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the British hit show’s newly released season 3, it has already been renewed for a fourth season. Sex Education has an unapologetic devotion to pushing back on the embarrassment that’s often wrapped up in sex, and it has grown to be internet famous because of it.

The series, created by Laurie Dunn, follows the students at fictional Moordale Secondary School as they navigate their sexualities. The show starts with Otis Milburn (played by Asa Butterfield) opening a “sex clinic” at school with his friend Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey). Otis’s mother, Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson), is a sex therapist, and it quickly becomes apparent that Otis has inherited his mom’s talent. With their clinic, Otis and Maeve help their teenage peers navigate the inherently enigmatic concept that is sex. But season 3 presents unique challenges for the students when a new headteacher, Hope Haddon (Jemima Kirke), seeks to build a more controlled and strict school environment, thus creating a culture of shame around sexuality.

At its core, Sex Education show is an ode to therapy. Gone are the days of stigmatized mental health accommodations and notions that going to therapy somehow makes you weak — talking through your problems is in! With new characters and complex storylines, the show addresses parts of sex that are often seen as taboo. It’s safe to say we all wish we had this kind of transparency around sex growing up.

There’s so much to love about Sex Education — but here are some of our favourite unexpected things about the show. (Spoilers ahead!)

The way wardrobe informs identity

Sex Education characters have unique wardrobes that don’t follow any current trends but speak to their individual storylines. Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa) is a prime example of this. Eric is gay and uses his personal style and knack for fashion as a way to express himself. In an interview with Off Colour, costume designer Rosa Dias says, “With Eric, I just wanted to create a person who had such confidence in himself.” He wears bright colours, mixes loud patterns, sports glittery makeup, and has a contagious aura of self-love. But when Eric goes through a traumatic experience in season 1, his style dramatically changes. He begins wearing muted tones and basics like T-shirts and zip-up sweaters in lieu of his signature colourful statement pieces. When he regains his confidence, Eric channels his Ghanaian-Nigerian background and queer identity, showing up to prom in a kente suit from Ghana and gele (head tie) from Nigeria.

When headteacher Hope implements school uniforms in season 3, individuality is harder to express and this impacts queer students differently. Because uniforms are historically gendered — with distinct sets made for boys and girls — the new rules consequently force students into gender identity boxes. A newly introduced character, Cal Bowman (played by American artist Dua Saleh) runs into problems because of this. Cal is non-binary, and Hope (who perceives them as a girl) tells them they are in the wrong uniform when they show up wearing the loosely fitted boys’ attire. Hope then tells them they must wear a smaller, more fitted size, and Cal refuses because as a gender-nonconforming person, they don’t wear clothes that hug their body. This stance is not taken seriously by Hope, who labels Cal as a problem student and continues to disregard their identity. Cal’s uniform choice remains a topic of contention throughout the season — representing a small but meaningful form of resistance.

Displays of male emotional vulnerability

The show’s most constant on-screen relationship is that of best friends Eric and Otis, who share a platonic male intimacy that is scarcely shown on-screen. They hug, cuddle, and willingly open up to each other — it’s a refreshing display of platonic love between two male characters.

The series also highlights the all-too-common reality of repressed emotions in men. Season 3 gives two of the shows’ former antagonists, Adam Groffe (Connor Swindell) and his father Micheal (Alistair Petrie), a complex backstory. Both characters were at times bullies on the show, but instead of painting them as inherently bad, Sex Education shows how they are both carrying the trauma of toxic masculinity. As a child, Micheal’s father instilled in him the dangerous notion that “boys don’t cry,” leading him to continue this cycle of stifled emotions with his son. Viewers are shown how this messaging leads men and boys to be unhappy and emotionally stunted later in life. Even still, the series leaves room for growth — displaying how both characters can end the cycle by learning to express themselves.

The realness of it all

Sex Education is about dismantling shame. There are many queer characters who are all different from each other and have distinct styles, flaws and preferences. Because queerness is so normalized, the show avoids tokenizing these characters. Fetishes, role-play and masturbation are all included as normal parts of sex, instead of othered concepts. The show also brings to light the less glamorous parts of sexuality, like insecurities about penis size or vulva shape, and learning how to bind your chest as a non-binary person. Disabled sex is also represented in the show, with a scene between Maeve and her neighbour Isaac Goodwin (George Robinson), who uses a wheelchair. They talk through their intimate moment, using verbal check-ins as a way of ensuring the other person is enjoying themselves. A+!

While highlighting consent and healthy self-discovery, the show displays the dangers of inadequate sex education. With Hope’s reign at Moordale, students are subjected to watching outdated, heteronormative pre-recorded tapes as their means of sex ed. Like a lot of traditional sex education, the tapes use fear-mongering as a way to preach abstinence. Armed with harmful misinformation, students begin to freak out, with one gay student wrongly believing he has contracted HIV. The show addresses this with a scene from a nurse explaining that despite ongoing HIV stigma, HIV/AIDS is preventable and treatable.

The moral of the story? Communication works and open dialogues around sex are necessary! Sex Education is a gift to us all.

What Is “Fendace” and Why Is It Taking Over Social Media?

Let’s be clear: “Fendace” is not a collaboration. At least, not according to the creative minds behind Fendi and Versace.

For the finale of Milan’s Spring 2022 fashion week, the two luxury fashion houses joined forces to create “Fendace.” Not to be confused with a new celebrity couple à la Bennifer or Brangelina, the collections saw Fendi directors Kim Jones and Silvia Venturini Fendi design 25 Versace looks while Donatella Versace reciprocated with 25 Fendi ensembles.

Despite swirling rumours of a potential partnership, the mashup still came as a complete shock to many. Invitations provided no hint about what to expect as Versace’s summons ominously read, “Please join me for an intimate creative experience.” In fact, it wasn’t until the designers revealed themselves at the end of each other’s show that the audience fully comprehended what they had just experienced.

First to take the proverbial stage were the Fendi designers, as the Versace show opened with two icons— supermodel Kristen McMenamy in an ode to Elizabeth Hurley’s infamous all-black safety-pinned look. Gold and black garments were as far as the eye could see, as were Fendi’s geometric double F logo and Versace’s Grecian motif in the form of flashy patterns and jewellery.

Next was Fendi by Versace, which took a more colourful approach for the upcoming spring/summer season but continued with the logo-mania theme that has become synonymous with luxury house collaborations. Midriffs were the ultimate accessory as models strutted in crop tops and low-rise bottoms, and Versace insignia caps were the cherry on top.

For such an iconic moment in fashion history, the model lineup was possibly even more legendary. Both old and new faces returned to the runway in what felt like the best Fendi and Versace birthday party ever. Paloma Elsesser, Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski and Naomi Campbell added undeniable glamour and caché to the event (like it needed it!), and it was, to borrow the words of front row attendee Dua Lipa, “hotter than hell.”

While “Fendace” marks the first occasion that two major fashion houses owned by different conglomerates have swapped roles, they are by no means the first luxury designer pairing. Prada and Raf Simons ushered in this new era of fashion friendships back in February 2020. Then in April of 2021, Gucci and Balenciaga “hacked” one another for the Italian brand’s 100th anniversary.

Is this new addition to the collaboration hall of fame extremely entertaining? Absolutely, yes. But is this marketing exercise  losing a bit of its lustre — also, yes. What makes these collections so enjoyable is their rarity: Their appeal lies in the surprise factor and overarching sense of rebellion. These team-ups, partnerships, “hackings” — call them what you will — play with conventional fashion rules and bring a sense of humour to an industry that has historically been resistant to making fun of itself. It is possible, after all, to have too much of a good thing.

To mark the 40th anniversary of Emporio Armani, Toronto-based artist Maxwell N. Burnstein was tapped to interpret the storied fashion brand’s history and future. Burnstein, who is self-taught, has done so in a series of collages that illustrate how the Italian fashion house has stayed true to its heritage while simultaneously adapting to metropolitan living. The masterful collages are set to be displayed on the W1 Screens along Oxford Street in London, England, as a site-specific installation. Yet another instance of Canadian talent being carried across the world.

 

 

GOGO Sweaters collaborates with Jordana’s Rainbows to raise funds for children’s cancer research

Canadian-made, luxury hand-knit label GOGO Sweaters is known for its chic, celeb-approved knits. This week, the brand announced a new partnership with local charity Jordana’s Rainbows, a non-profit committed to raising research funds and awareness for DIPG, a rare form of cancer in children. Starting on October 1, the selection of limited-edition wool sweaters will be available on gogosweaters.com, and 30 percent of proceeds will go to Jordana’s Rainbows.

Life After Birth: Portraits of Love and the Beauty of Parenthood is the newest coffee-table book in town, and it’s particularly meaningful because it features imagery and personal stories surrounding every stage of parenthood and postpartum. Created by intimates brand Knix in collaboration with Carriage House Birth, this truthful tome aims to tackle misconceptions and taboos surrounding birthing experiences. Volvo Cars Canada and Casca footwear collaborate on a sustainable sneaker

Volvo Cars Canada has partnered with Vancouver-based Casca footwear to launch a limited-edition sneaker, inspired by the pure electric Volvo XC40 Recharge. This is a collab that highlights two brands’ shared vision for a carbon-neutral future. The launch, which was on World Car Free Day on September 22, unveiled the shoe’s long-term, sustainable and circular approach to design: 10 percent of the sole on each shoe is made from recycled car tires, and seven recycled plastic water bottles are used to make yarn for the breathable, flexible knit upper. This is all wrapped up in a minimalist, Scandinavian design.

High fashion house Balenciaga has collaborated with video game Fortnite on a capsule of in-game character clothes and limited-edition wearable garments. The four new gaming skins, available for purchase in the video game to customize your player, feature a piece from Balenciaga’s Fall 2021 futuristic-looking line as well as a Spring 2020 animal striped look. The game’s weaponry has also been given a Balenciaga touch, with some of the brand’s quintessential accessories reimagined as pixellated ammo. A run of physical garments labelled with ‘Fortnite’ are available for purchase at Balenciaga, though they’ve already nearly sold out.

The Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) and The Shopping Channel (TSC) have launched a new initiative to showcase an inspiring and diverse group of Canadian fashion brands. A dedicated “CAFA Shop” has been introduced on the TSC e-commerce platform, and will offer the goods of curated Canadian designers, including ai Toronto Seoul, Biko, Kaela Kay, Brass & Unity, Judith and Charles, to name a few, with plans to add even more throughout the fall. GP sat down with her assistant Kevin on Goop’s Instagram this week to dish on some of her most notable hair looks, including that his-and-hers haircut she shared with Brad Pitt. And yes, they did go to the same hairstylist. And yes, it was celebrity hair mastermind Chris MacMillan (who just happened to also cut Jennifer Aniston’s fame-making layered look on Friends right before she met Pitt. Hmm.) Lise Watier creates business training and funding for Toronto women with YWCA

The Lise Watier Foundation announced this week that it’s bringing its Let’s Start Up Program to Toronto, in partnership with the YWCA. The program has already been up-and-running in Quebec since 2017, where it provides personalized 18-week business training, personal coaching and loan resources to women affected by poverty (34 per cent of working Canadian women earn less than $20,000 a year) and other social or professional vulnerabilities. The program is tailored to those who are either interested in going back to school, entering the job market or entrepreneurship. Lona Accessories, co-founded by program graduate Valérie Lachance is one such success story. Marie-Lise Andrade, president of the Lise Watier Foundation, says that one out of five entrepreneur-driven participants this year were interested in either beauty, fashion or wellness projects, including accessories, styling services, and natural cosmetics. “Our role is to provide women the tools and support they need to gain confidence in their ability to lead their business to success. This new trio of perfumes from Aesop will transport us all  

Othertopias is a new collection of three gender-neutral fragrances developed by ultra-chic French perfumer Barnabé Fillion for Melbourne-based brand Aesop.  Joining their four existing scents, these three eaux de parfums, titled Miraceti, Karst and Erémia, are unique to say the least, and were designed to take you on adventure sequentially from “the boat, to the shore and the wasteland.” But, not to worry, the latter is actually a lovely citrus-floral with notes of yuzu and iris, while Miraceti is a spicy, woodsy scent, and Karst is fresh and herby with notes of juniper and cumin. Consider us swept away.

What Exactly Is CoolSculpting, Anyway?

This week, supermodel Linda Evangelista made waves on her Instagram when she announced she was suing a company named Zeltiq after a CoolSculpting procedure left her “brutally disfigured,” sending her into a cycle of depression and out of the public eye for more than five years. The non-surgical procedure is licensed to medical spas and dermatologists across Canada, as well as in over 74 other countries. While the fat-zapping treatment has been name-dropped by celebs in the past (Molly SimsKhloe Kardashian and Deborah Messing have been open about using it), the very nature of the treatment being a body-slimming method means it’s usually discussed behind closed doors. The story has a lot of people wondering what is CoolSculpting to begin with.

So, what exactly does the CoolSculpting procedure entail? The treatments are designed to target stubborn fat cells that seem to want to stay put regardless of diet or exercise. Common places to target the treatment include abs, love handles, thighs, and even the chin. (As a rule of thumb, CoolSculpting is suggested more for body “contouring” rather than general weight loss.)

During the treatment, a cooling gel pad (which is very cold) is applied to an area of your body. At the same time, an applicator cup applied to the surface of your skin will suck up fatty tissue, creating a tugging and pinching sensation. The targeted fat literally becomes frozen, and will quickly feel numb—a feeling that can last for weeks to follow. In those weeks, your body is meant to process the now dead, frozen fat cells and eliminate them without any further effort, as if you had burned them off naturally.

The technology, also known as “cryolipolysis,” was invented in part by Richard Anderson, a Boston-based dermatologist who received his doctorate from a joint MIT-Harvard medical program. He also completed his dermatology residency at Harvard, where he later became a professor. CoolSculpting was approved by Health Canada in the early 2010s.

In general, treatments tend to start at around $750, but again, depend on how many areas and visits you’ll require in order to potentially attain the result you’re hoping for. If you’re looking to eliminate a considerable amount of fat, your practitioner will likely recommend several visits. On her Instagram post, Evangelista speaks out about her painful personal experience, including alleging that she developed very serious side effects she was not made aware of  prior to treatment, such as developing Paradoxial Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH). Reportedly, PAH is a highly rare but previously undisclosed potential side effect, which actually causes fat cells to expand, rather than be eliminated.

Of course, it goes without saying that you should always do as much research as possible when considering any procedure, non-invasive or not, and consult your physician.

Must-See Moments from Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty Vol. 3

I think we can all agree that Rihanna can do no wrong. Case in point: the Savage x Fenty Vol. 3 show that premiered on September 24 at midnight on Amazon Prime Video.

To celebrate the launch of the multi-hyphenate’s third lingerie collection, RiRi assembled an all-star cast that could rival the Avengers, and the performances and fashion were just as over-the-top, celebratory and empowering as her first two, if not more.

When the “Shut Up and Drive” singer first debuted Savage x Fenty in 2019, it sent shockwaves across the industry for its inclusive cast and sizing. Drag queens, trans women, supermodels and women of different shapes and sizes intermingled in a revolutionary celebration of diversity and representation. Just as Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line broke boundaries when it released 50 foundation shades, her intimates are designed in a similar vein, with the size range going up to a 3X, and bras available in 42DDD and 44D.

With expectations sky-high for Savage x Fenty Vol. 3, Rihanna didn’t disappoint. The 40-minute show was packed with celebrity cameos, drop-dead gorgeous underwear, and surprise musical performances. But among all the splendour, there were a few moments you shouldn’t miss, so here’s a roundup of the very best— including Gigi Hadid’s new do.

Emerald City

To misquote Kermit the Frog, it is easy being green — at least according to Rihanna. Models strutted the runway in neon, emerald and mint monochromatic ensembles, instantly cementing green as this season’s “it” colour. Highlights included iconic supermodel Cindy Crawford looking stunning in an elegant nightie that could easily be worn on a red carpet, and Indigenous model and activist Quannah Chasinghorse rocking an avant-garde beauty look while in a lace bodysuit.

Gigi Makes a Bang

Leave it to Gigi Hadid to bring back bangs. The model sashayed the runway clad in a metallic Savage x Fenty robe and undies in a cat-eye that would make Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra jealous. While the hairstyle was only a wig (Hadid walked the Tod’s runway the same day in her goldie locks), we loved seeing this new mom as a brunette.

RuPaul Royalty

If you haven’t already jumped on the RuPaul’s Drag Race bandwagon, consider this your royal summons. Season 13 winner Symone and runner-up Gottmik slayed the house down, decked out in Savage x Fenty Vol. 3 fineries. This wasn’t the first time drag has taken over RiRi’s runway — last year’s show included RuPaul AllStars Season 5 winner Shea Couleé and Season 12 winner and finalists Jaida Essence Hall and Gigi Goode.

The Many, Many Performances

Coachella called, and they want their lineup back. In a fashion show unlike any other, Savage x Fenty Vol. 3 felt like a concert-runway hybrid. Normani performed “Wild Side” while doing the splits on top of seven male dancers. Ricky Martin sang a medley of his top hits. Jazmine Sullivan’s “Heaux Tales” provided the perfect soundtrack to model Irina Shayk’s runway walk. Daddy Yankee brought the Latin flavour days before he was inducted into the Billboard Latin Music Awards hall of fame. And R&B artist Nas kicked off the finale.

Size-Inclusivity, BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ Representation

Forget the fashion; the inclusivity itself deserves a standing ovation. While this isn’t new for Rihanna’s lingerie brand, it warrants celebrating nonetheless. Plus-size, Black, Latina, Indigenous, Asian, and transgendered models intermingled in a beautiful display of diversity and empowerment.

The host finally revealed herself in a red-hot ensemble during a montage by Busta Rhymes, who wasn’t in attendance. Still, his voice, along with Janet Jackson’s, boomed over the speakers as Rihanna danced to “What’s It Gonna Be?” and “Break Ya Neck” against a fiery backdrop.
