I Tried a Dermatological Anti-Aging Correcting Serum for a Week

Antonia Fifi applying the serum

I’d never been concerned about aging. Getting older somehow made me feel more sophisticated rather than outdated, in part because I’d grown accustomed to everyone guessing I was 5-10 years younger than my age. That is, until my best friend turned 40—a year before me—and someone was surprised she was my senior. I was in denial, when I took a closer look and realized the wrinkles on my forehead and deep laugh lines were telling a different story than the one in my mind. Where had they come from all of sudden?

The last three years have been tough, leaving behind my life, business and family in Trinidad and Tobago for a new country, which was quickly followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The stress manifested emotionally and physically, in fairly severe adult acne. Determined to return to a reflection of clear skin, I was a bit heavy-handed on the acids, burning some sensitive areas more than once (my laugh lines in particular). The acne eventually cleared, but the harsh treatments left a legacy of new and more prominent wrinkles and fine lines.

I can admit I’m not always great at following routines, with my consistency falling off as soon as I see improvement. However, in the last year, determined to reverse some damage, I’ve made it a custom to cleanse, tone and moisturize every morning and evening: using a minimum of SPF25 moisturizer in the mornings, double cleansing on evenings, and experimenting with different eye creams. The skin around my eyes is quite thin, especially after the damaging effects of trying to get rid of my acne.

If hydration and plumping are a priority for you, you’ve likely heard about hyaluronic acid, which I now consider a must-have in my skincare routine. I’ve been through a handful of brands and Hyalu B5 Serum by La Roche-Posay—the #1 Dermatologist recommended brand in Canada*—is by far the most effective I’ve tried. I’ve been using it for about a year now, twice a day. Don’t be led astray by the term “acid”. This ingredient, produced by your body naturally, delivers intense hydration, repairs the skin’s moisture barrier and boost elasticity. In fact, like its namesake, Hyalu is packed with two types of hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5. The result? My skin is glowing and fine lines are plumped almost immediately upon application, most visibly in areas around my eyes.

The Hyalu B5 Serum is tested on all skin types, of all ages, but for me, having combination skin, I look for products that offer oil-free hydration. The light gel consistency means it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave residue, leaving my skin primed for moisturizer or makeup. During the hot summer months, when my skin gets oilier, I can even skip the step of an added moisturizer. Plus, a little goes a long way. The dropper makes dispensing small amounts easy, and at an already competitive price, the longevity of the 30ml bottle really surprised me.

I highly recommend the La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum for all skin types and believe it’s lightweight enough to use twice a day during all seasons.

Law Roach Is the Moment

Nowadays, it’s unlikely to come across a best-dressed list that doesn’t feature a look styled by Law Roach. The self-proclaimed “image architect” has racked up an extensive roster of high-profile clients, who, thanks to him, are consistently on point in fashion masterpieces. As a result, Roach’s name has become a staple at large-scale celebrity events, where his eye for style is highly favoured. As Zendaya’s longtime stylist, we have Roach to credit for the star’s consistently daring ensembles, like her 2021 BET Awards archival Versace look that paid tribute to none other than Beyoncé. Most recently, Roach styled Kerry Washington in a sleek silver custom Etro dress for the 2021 Emmy awards. He’s also responsible for Anya Taylor-Joy’s vintage-inspired Dior gown for the Emmys that was accentuated with $800,000 worth of Tiffany & Co. jewellery — NBD.

Roach’s far-reaching influence also manifested itself at the 2021 Met Gala, where he doled out his expertise for a total of 10 (!) red carpet looks. He was the genius behind several of our favourite outfits, like Hunter Schafer’s sci-fi-inspired Prada set and Kehlani’s sparkling crystal-embellished Aliétte suit. With these looks in his back pocket, it only makes sense for Roach to be on everyone’s radar.

Before working as a stylist, Roach ran his own vintage boutique, which led to an introduction to a 13-year-old (Disney-era) Zendaya, his first major client. The pair have been a powerful duo ever since and maintain one of the most in-sync celebrity-stylist relationships of all time. At the 2021 Venice Film Festival, for instance, Roach put Zendaya in a slew of show-stopping outfits, like her “wet” Balmain look and her brown balloon-like birthday dress from Madison Valentino. He was lauded for single-handedly creating the best looks at the festival — with other clients including Taylor-Joy and Tiffany Haddish generating buzz in their Roach-styled ensembles.

We also have Roach to thank for transforming Canadian singer Celine Dion’s style back in 2016. But widespread acclaim for the stylist has particularly grown over the past year, during a pandemic, no less. It’s what led him to be named The Hollywood Reporter’s Top Stylist of the Year in May 2021. He was photographed for the issue alongside clients Zendaya and Taylor-Joy.

Roach’s distinctive looks have become a fixture of red carpet glamour — he is responsible for one of last year’s first headline-making ensembles: the explosion of tulle Ariana Grande donned on the 2020 Grammys red carpet. But Roach’s reach goes even beyond events: he has styled a dozen magazine covers this year alone, reports  PopSugar, and has also been the costume designer for motion pictures like Malcolm & Marie — the Zendaya film shot entirely under pandemic restrictions.

Roach merges classic chic with modernity and never shies away from trying something new. He’s able to put his clients in fresh off-the-runway finery, like the two-piece set from Alaïa’s winter/spring 2022 collection Zendaya wore at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, which fans noted would have been a highly competitive catch among stylists. Thanks to his love for vintage, Roach also regularly pulls in rare archived pieces. When he recently styled Halsey for their visual album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, he dressed the singer in an array of vintage looks, from archived Vivienne Westwood to Christian Lacroix.

We have yet to be disappointed in an ensemble styled by Law Roach. His fearlessness and ability to understand what works best on his clients have resulted in elevated red carpet glamour, and have rightfully placed Roach as a coveted name in fashion. We thank him for his services.

There’s a New Royal Baby!

Congratulations are in order for the British royals, who have a new addition to their family tree. Princess Beatrice, granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, welcomed a baby girl with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on September 18. The happy news was shared on the royal family’s Instagram account alongside a photo of the couple at their intimate wedding ceremony in July 2020.

The baby, who arrived at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital weighing in at six pounds and two ounces, is the Queen’s 12th great-grandchild and 11th in line to the throne. “The new baby’s grandparents and great-grandparents have all been informed and are delighted with the news,” said the release. “The family would like to thank all the staff at the hospital for their wonderful care.”

This is Princess Beatrice’s first child, and second for her husband, a property developer who has a five-year-old boy named Christopher Woolf (“Wolfie” for short). “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well, and the couple are looking forward to introducing their daughter to her big brother Christopher Woolf,” the family said statement.

The baby’s name has yet to be announced, but Hello! Canada reports that “Sarah” — a nod to Beatrice’s mother Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York — is a popular prediction.

The past year is proving to be fruitful for the royal family. In June, Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcomed their second child, daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. (That’s Lili for short.) And in March, the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Tindall (née Phillips) and her husband, former English rugby union player Mike Tindall, welcomed their third child, Lucas Philip. In early February, Beatrice’s younger sister Princess Eugenie also gave birth to a son named August Philip Hawke, with her husband Jack Brooksbank (who is a brand ambassador for George Clooney‘s tequila company.) One thing’s for sure, the royals’ family gatherings are sure to be a lot more lively.

Sending our best wishes to the happy couple!

Canadian Talent Tops the Emmys Best-Dressed List

One year after Schitt’s Creek’s historic award show sweep, Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy and Catherine O’Hara reunited on the 2021 Emmys red carpet, and the internet (understandably) lost its mind to see the beloved Rose family together again.

With an outpouring of Tweets and happy tears, the iconic cast once again got to shine — and this year they weren’t the only Canadians to do so.

Devery Jacobs, star of the Indigenous-led comedy Reservation Dogs and an Emmys presenter, wore not one but three Canadian designers to the event. Channelling her inner ethereal goddess, Indigenous-Canadian designer Lesley Hampton created a custom sheer gown for the occasion. The actress paired it with a Knix bodysuit and earrings by Indi City.

Canadian fashion label Greta Constantine also made a statement on the 2021 Emmys red carpet as American powerhouse Angela Bassett appeared in their ruffled black and pink ensemble and presented the final award of the night (which went to The Queen’s Gambit).

The Toronto-based design duo behind Greta Constantine — Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong — have also dressed Schitt’s Creek cast members such as Catherine O’Hara and Emily Hampshire at previous award ceremonies, prompting celebrity stylists to add them to their couture lineups. Notable names who have worn the Canadian brand include Tiffany Haddish, Kerry Washington, Demi Lovato,  Viola Davis and Amanda Gorman, among others.

As 2021’s award season is well on its way, we can’t wait to see what other Canadian names will crop up. Until then, here are a few of our other picks for best dressed on the 2021 Emmys red carpet.
