I, Too, Would Like Oscar Isaac to Sniff and Smooch My Arm

Over the weekend, I was reminded yet again of why I could never be an actor: I would simply fall in love with all of my co-stars. This is especially true if my colleague was Oscar Isaac, the internet heartthrob who seems to have chemistry with every person on Earth. When gracing the Venice Film Festival red carpet on September 4, Isaac and co-star Jessica Chastain sent the internet into an absolute froth with some very sensual sniffing action that will be forever etched into pop culture’s collective memory.

The flirty incident, which was of course captured on video, starts innocently enough: Chastain has her arm around Isaac’s shoulders as any co-star hamming it up on the red carpet would. And then there’s a moment — a pivotal moment — when he turns to her, stares down at her bicep and begins to stroke it as if he’s realizing for the first time that she has an arm. When they make eye contact, his eyes are filled with pure adoration, and then, he sticks his face into her arm, seemingly inhaling her scent while planting a kiss very close to her underarm. Chastain, looking understandably flustered, playfully pushes him away and returns to hold his face. Isaac, then, does a chef’s kiss hand gesture and looks up to the sky, as if to say, “Thank you, God.” If I was a part of that moment, I would be thanking a higher power as well.

Chastain, wearing a strapless red Atelier Versace gown and a statement diamond necklace, walked alongside her co-star Isaac, in a black tux, for the Venice Film Festival premiere of Scenes From a Marriage, an HBO television series debuting on September 12. The series, which is based on the 1973 miniseries written by Ingmar Bergman, gives an intimate look into the collapsing relationship of Mira (played by Chastain) and Jonathan (played by Isaac).

We’ve seen displays of this palpable Chastain-Isaac chemistry before, with fans referencing a scene where Chastain similarly held Isaac’s face when they played a couple in the 2014 film A Most Violent Year. The two have a long-standing friendship, dating back to their days as students at The Juilliard School in Manhattan. They are both also married — Isaac to screenwriter Elvira Lind (who was standing next to them during their red carpet show of affection) and Chastain to fashion exec Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo. But still, the moment fuelled countless jokes about how their respective spouses must have felt seeing that go down.

The arm sniff was reminiscent of a scene in The Addams Family wherein patriarch Gomez Addams lustfully smells his wife Morticia’s arm. Isaac previously voiced Gomez in an animated The Addams Family project, so these comparisons are truly spot on. Chastain gave a nod to the observation, tweeting a snap of the Gomez arm sniff scene, captioning it with “Sept 12th” — the release date of Scenes From a Marriage.

 

This is not the first time that perfectly paired co-stars used their undeniable chemistry to promote upcoming projects. Who can forget the love fest that came from Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga when promoting A Star Is Born? Their affectionate artistic relationship came with countless flirtatious red carpet moments, mutual gushes of adoration over one another in interviews, and most notably, their viral performance at the 2019 Oscars — complete with hand-holding and longing stares into each other’s eyes.

Was this steamy Isaac-Chastain moment likely staged to generate press for their upcoming show? Of course. Did it work? Here I am writing about it. Even still, I believe that that level of chemistry simply can’t be faked. And I’m here for the genius promotional tactic that has the internet hot and bothered.

What Exactly *Is* a Celebrity Creative Director?

Kendall Jenner has yet another role to add to her ever-growing resume. On September 1, the supermodel was named creative director for luxury fashion e-retailer FWRD. The online brand, which is owned by parent company Revolve Group, said it will be using Jenner’s guidance to “deliver a next-level fashion experience for shoppers.”

Jenner is no stranger to a side project — along with being the world’s highest-paid model, she co-runs the Kendall + Kylie apparel line, is a collaborator with oral care brand Moon and even has her own tequila brand, called 818 — but what kind of responsibility would a role like this actually entail?

As creative director of FWRD, Jenner will be in charge of “the look and feel of the site,” according to a press release from the brand. It added that she will be responsible for the curation of brands sold on FWRD, along with monthly trend and style edits. She will also take on “marketing ideas, brand partnerships and brand activations.” That alone sounds like a full-time job.

Jenner is just one of many celebs who have been appointed this kind of major-sounding role. Take, for instance, Emily Ratajkowski, who was named creative director of the face mask brand Loops in October 2020. Jennifer Aniston was given a similar title when she was named creative director and spokesperson for Vital Proteins in December 2020.

For brands, the benefit of this kind of partnership is clear: with the formal involvement of a celebrity as a creative director, fans associate the brand with the star who reps it, thus driving up sales and increasing brand awareness. In exchange, celebs are often compensated with some sort of equity in the brand, as reported by Glossy.

But with their jam-packed schedules, how could celebs like Jenner and Aniston possibly fulfill all of the responsibilities that come with the executive-level appointment, on top of the many jobs they already have? Creative directors have the power to completely shift a brand’s image (think Karl Lagerfeld with Chanel or Phoebe Philo with Celine) and no doubt take on a huge amount of responsibility when accepting such gigs. So, are these vanity titles? Or is the celebrity creative director more of an occasional consultant than a full-time employee? That remains to be seen (although we do love the idea of Kenny making herself a morning Nespresso in the FWRD office kitchen).

“Kendall is the epitome of luxury fashion, and there isn’t a better fit for this position,” said Raissa Gerona, Chief Brand Officer of Revolve Group, in the release. “As leaders in the industry and innovators in marketing, we are always looking for fresh ideas, staying ahead of the curve, and being at the forefront of style trends. The world looks at Kendall to lead the industry, and we are beyond excited to have her vision for FWRD come to life.”

With her established SoCal aesthetic and high-fashion allure, Jenner fits in well with the ethos of the California-based brand. She also meets parent company Revolve’s influencer-focused standard — the brand famously takes social media influencers on highly documented trips as a part of their advertising.

“I grew up loving fashion and have been incredibly fortunate to work with some of the most brilliant people in this business,” said Jenner in the brand’s release. “As FWRD’s Creative Director, I am excited to help curate the site’s offering with emerging designers and brands.”

The model will start in her new position during New York Fashion Week, which begins September 8. With Jenner in this type of role, we wonder if the trend of celebrities as creative directors will continue to rise even more.

The Far-Reaching Effects of Texas’s New Abortion Law

On September 1, the American state of Texas effectively banned abortions. The state enacted a new law, called Senate Bill 8, that prohibits abortions once a heartbeat is detected in a fetus. This can happen as early as six weeks — often before people even know that they are pregnant. According to Planned Parenthood, approximately 85 to 90 percent of people who obtain abortions in Texas are at least six weeks into pregnancy. Prior to this law, abortions in Texas were accessible for up to 20 weeks, so this is a drastic reduction in access. This decision, which makes no exceptions for cases of rape or incest, is the most restrictive abortion law in the United States. It serves as a jarring reminder of how reproductive rights are still not regarded as human rights, and its impacts are far-reaching.

Texas Senate Bill 8 is particularly cruel and unusual in that it will be enforced by private citizens, not government officials. It essentially rewards people for reporting those who they suspect have gotten abortions or performed abortions, allowing anyone — including someone living outside of Texas with no connection to the patient — to sue an abortion provider or anyone who helped someone get an abortion. If they are successful, they can be rewarded up to $10,000 (as well as legal fees) for every abortion they report. The person getting the abortion doesn’t face criminal penalties or direct government action (something a law typically enforces), it’s the provider or anyone who helps them obtain the abortion who will instead face a private lawsuit. Because of this, providers will likely be unwilling to risk the financial threat. The law stands in contrast to Roe v. Wade — the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that protects a pregnant person’s freedom to choose to have an abortion without government restriction. It sidesteps the historic legislation, though, by having individuals enforce the law instead of state officials, says Britt Neron, health promotion officer at Action Canada, a pro-choice charitable organization that works to uphold sexual and reproductive rights.

“It creates a system, basically, where vigilante-type individuals could report people for accessing abortion care or anyone who helps them get that care,” Neron says. “There’s often a whole network of people required to help someone access abortion care — from abortion doulas to clinical staff, folks providing referrals, supportive friends and family, drivers, abortion funds.” This law attempts to ban the aforementioned network, thus creating immediate barriers for the person seeking the abortion, they add.

On September 1, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to block the law by a 5-4 vote, denying an emergency request by abortion and women’s health providers. One of the four dissenting judges, Liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor, wrote of the decision, “The court’s order is stunning,” adding that “a majority of justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand.”

The effects of this law are already being seen, with abortion clinics turning away patients. All 11 abortion-providing Planned Parenthood clinics in the state of Texas have stopped scheduling abortions visits after six weeks of pregnancy, according to The 19th. And this decision will disproportionately impact those most marginalized. In the United States, unintended pregnancy rates are highest among people who are low-income, those aged 18-24, those cohabiting, and those who are racialized. Lack of access to abortion consequently grows the number of disenfranchised people, forcing people to have children despite unwanted pregnancies, thus making it harder for them to escape the cyclical nature of poverty.

The law won’t reduce the need for or even stop abortions, it will simply make them less safe, says Neron. “Whether or not you make abortion legal, or create legal barriers to it, the need for abortion remains fairly consistent,” they explain. As a result, people are either forced to carry out pregnancies that they don’t want, or they try to end the pregnancy on their own. “In many cases, people are resorting to unsafe means to try to procure an abortion for themselves. And that’s incredibly concerning since it can be fatal, it can be ineffective, [or] it can cause side effects. [With a] law such as this one, those are the likely outcomes.”

While Texas might feel far away, the decision will likely have a ripple effect on abortion and reproductive rights across the United States — and possibly beyond. Lawmakers in Florida are already considering similar legislation, with many expecting states including South Carolina, Arizona and Ohio to follow suit.

Abortion is legal in Canada, but access varies widely due to financial and geographical limitations. In New Brunswick, for instance, there is only one clinic that provides abortions, and it is not funded by Medicare. There are geographic barriers all throughout Atlantic Canada, notably in Newfoundland and Labrador, which only has one clinic in St. John’s. And Canada is not a united front when it comes to abortion viewpoints. Campaign Life Coalition — a large anti-abortion group — has previously backed Conservative politicians. Former Conservative party leader Andrew Scheer was known for his track record of voting for anti-abortion legislation, with him saying in 2017, “I have always voted in favour of pro-life legislation.” Though the Conservative’s current leader Erin O’Toole has stated he is pro-choice, the possibility of a politician coming into power and acting on anti-abortion sentiments is not far out of reach — and with the new Texas law, it feels even more plausible.

Despite a 2014 study finding that in Canada, one in three people who can become pregnant will have an abortion in their lifetime, the shame and stigma around needing to access the procedure remains, says Neron. “This stigma has real impacts on people who are trying to access that [abortion] care,” they say. “It contributes to less favourable outcomes if you’re feeling an incredible amount of guilt because of laws like this, that make you feel responsible for having to access this care, when we know there are all kinds of reasons why someone would need to access abortion care.”

Texture Talk: Expert Tips for Growing Longer, Healthier Curls

We’re always wondering how to get long, healthy hair (at the quickest rate possible!) — and the methods and products to get us there. While there’s no shortcut to growing hair faster (hair grows about half an inch a month), you can increase the amount of hair follicles that are growing and prevent breakage so that when it does grow, you retain the length. For those of us with 4C hair, growth is often hard to track because of factors like shrinkage and fragile strands. The good news is that it 4C curls grow at the same rate as any other texture.

We tapped celebrity hairstylist Glenna Sandy (who has styled Issa Rae’s famous curls) and Salon Académie owner Nancy Falaise, and Amika global artistic director Naeemah Lafond for tips on how to achieve the inches we’ve been vying for, plus product recommendations to help us along the way.

Don’t skip wash day

Since textured hair is thick, oils don’t travel down the hair shaft as easily, which is why you may not get that telltale greasy look when it’s in need of a wash. While you might be convinced that you can go weeks or even months without washing your hair, Falaise stresses that anything beyond the two-week mark will cause product build-up, sweat, dirt and oils to accumulate and prevent actual hair growth. Sandy suggests establishing a wash day routine with a shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner and a styler.

Embrace the scissors

It might seem counterintuitive, but in order to retain length, getting your hair trimmed is key. Since dead and split ends stunt the growth of your hair, getting rid of what’s no longer healthy will actually give strength to the root of the hair to encourage growth, says Falaise. If you regularly wear your hair curly, regular trims will also give the appearance of bouncier, more defined curls.

Heat is not your friend

Heat can definitely make life with curly and coily hair a lot easier. It can help elevate certain styles, assist in identifying growth and cut your drying time in half. However, be wary of potential heat damage. Lafond suggests using a heat protectant like the Amika Blockade Heat Protectant Serum to ensure there’s a barrier between your hair and your heat tool of choice to prevent heat damage and maintain your true curl pattern.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Make daily hydration a top priority, says Sandy. Incorporate products that have humectants (like glycerin) to attract and retain moisture. Honey and aloe vera are excellent natural humectants — add them to your deep conditioning masks for an extra boost of hydration. And, use a nourishing oil to lock in any moisture that you add to the hair, says Lafond. Since curly and kinky hair need plenty of moisture to thrive, we often compensate with hydrating hair products. Staying quenched is a great way to ensure you’re providing moisture to the hair from the inside out.

Handle with care

Hair is delicate but curly hair is especially fragile. Since each strand is unique and has a slightly lifted cuticle, it allows for the internal structure of the hair to become exposed making the hair more prone to damage. Ditch the towel (the smallest tugs from the fibres can cause knots and snags) and wrap your hair in a cotton t-shirt or a microfibre towel like this one from Pattern Beauty. When detangling hair and styling, use a leave-in conditioner that contains a lot of slip or a specialized detangling product. Since over-manipulating your hair can also lead to breakage, embrace the wide range of protective styles that are available for textured hair.
