5 Layering Hacks That Prove Fall Is the Best Fashion Season

We all know how the story goes—as the summer season begins to wind down and the leaves change to signify fall, we struggle to dress for up-and-down weather. We dress for the cool morning air, only to find ourselves searing under the midday sun. The key to surviving a Canadian change in season comes down to a simple trick: layering.

‘Tis the season of layers, layers and more layers, but it’s not as easy as just throwing on a bunch of different items. It’s a formula that takes some practice, knowledge of your own fashion sense and a few strategic wardrobe pieces, that all together will make your new life of layering a total breeze.

Not sure where to start? Nordstrom Rack has you covered. With every brand, style and all price points under one roof, it’s your ideal one-stop destination to shop for new fall layering fashionable pieces at a fraction.

Finally, here are our top tips for layering your favourite pieces while transitioning into fall.

Master the basics

Layering is king during the fall season. Besides being a helpful tool when combatting fluctuating temps throughout the day, it also makes styling outfits a lot more fun and creative. From mixing and matching silhouettes and textures to investing in high-quality faux leather or suede pieces (think biker jackets or booties), to having fun with your accessories—there’s a ton of room to play when it comes to layering looks and there’s no better time for it than autumn.

Mix styles and textures

Fall is all about mixing silhouettes and textures to give outfits dimension, and it’s easier than ever when you’re tasked with layering your clothes. Let your inner Gen Z E-girl out with a turtleneck worn underneath your favourite band tee. Pair a chiffon blouse beneath a cotton crewneck, lean into your patriotic side with a chic Canadian tuxedo (and have fun switching up the washes) or add elements of pleather to softer textiles like silk for an outfit that says expensive without trying too hard.

Invest in the perfect faux leather jacket

A faux leather jacket is the ultimate transitional piece that will never go out of style and elevates any outfit to take it from day to night. Pair it with a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt or throw it over a dress to give it an edge for an evening event. If you get too warm, let your inner chic Parisian out and throw or drape your biker jacket over your shoulders. It adds a certain je ne sais quoi, non?

If smooth, black leather isn’t your thing, opt for a denim jacket. Jean jackets are truly a fall wardrobe staple and can add an edge to any look. From dark wash to light wash, and coloured to embellished, the amount of versatility in the denim jacket category makes it incredibly easy to find your perfect piece that suits your original style.

Whether your heart’s calling for leather or denim, Nordstrom Rack’s wide selection of jackets and outerwear has you covered.

Complete your outfit with the perfect pair of boots

Sweaters, jackets and long-sleeve blouses are just the beginning of the layering technique. Boots and booties provide fashionistas with the perfect opportunity to both be chic and stay warm. So, don’t put away those adorable dresses and skirts just yet! Pair them with tights and your new favourite knee-high boots—in smooth faux leather or suede—to keep your legs warm on those chillier fall evenings. More of a jeans gal? Layering your chic booties with a pair of skinny jeans is an easy way to level up your daytime look. Or do you crave that extra bit of edge? Don’t shy away from a bolder combat boot. Pair them with a distressed pair of jeans or even a flirty dress for a more daring contrast.

Make sure to visit your local Nordstrom Rack and peep through their extensive footwear section—you’re bound to find your sole-mate there.

Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize

It’s 2021 and officially time we all stop shying away from incorporating hats into our looks. It’s the ultimate, versatile accessory that can instantly take a look from drab to fab, and is also a simple fix to a bad hair day. If your taste is on the preppier side, consider a wide-brimmed felt hat. Is your style more classic? Dabble with the elegant beret. Either way, have fun with it and make it your own. Finally, don’t forget that final touch of jewelry. Whether it’s a dainty gold necklace or bolder statement earrings, that extra hint of shine is another way to express your personal style and tie your whole fall outfit together.

Ready for fall yet? Visit your local Nordstrom Rack location and start browsing for fashionable and functional pieces at a fraction of the cost.

The Disappointment Over Olivia Rodrigo’s Merch Isn’t That Surprising

Merch is an important part of any music fandom. This is particularly true in the COVID age of streaming and digital performances, where artists can’t connect with fans in physical spaces like they used to. Buying an artist’s merchandise is a way to directly support them while feeling a sort of kinship with other fans, and the collective experience of their music. It’s also important for the artist, who can make a substantial profit through merchandise sales.

When pop music’s current it-girl Olivia Rodrigo debuted her merch online back in May, there was much anticipation from fans. For starters, Rodrigo’s website was carefully curated with a colour scheme and tone to match her newly released album, Sour. The online shop featured pieces inspired by Rodrigo’s signature Y2K style beloved by her largely Gen Z fan base, like bucket hats and chunky jewellery — modelled by the 18-year-old star herself. But months after the merch drop, fans are not happy with the products they’re finally receiving.

Despite the website’s promising look, the apparel itself has arrived with an array of problems. On TikTok, one fan shared that the word “sour” in the earrings they receiving was misspelled. Another fan pointed out the discrepancy between the crewneck T-shirt advertised on the site versus what they received — noting the completely different shade of purple and the missing cuffs on the sleeves. Many fans have also posted about how a cropped white graphic tank top from the collection arrives un-cropped — and honestly much longer than the average tank top.

On TikTok, the hashtag #OliviaRodrigoMerch — which has garnered over 30 million views — is filled with videos of fans sharing their disappointing experiences. At the time of publication, Rodrigo and her team had not responded publicly to the criticism surrounding the merch, but fans have noticed that some of the problem items have been removed from the website entirely.

This isn’t the first time celebrity merchandise has been a letdown to fans. On her Sweetener album tour, Ariana Grande’s concert T-shirts were criticized for lacking in quality and creativity. Most notable among this particular line of merch was a white shirt that had a weird blue blotch — accidentally resembling an NSFW design. Harry Styles’s Fine Line album merch has also became known across TikTok for its generic, unimaginative designs — so much so that some fans have begun redesigning and selling their own merch inspired by the singer. More recently, on July 24, Doja Cat took to Twitter to respond to people who were criticizing the designs and price point of the merchandise from her new album, Planet Her. “[The] merch is bad. i’m aware,” she wrote. When a fan asked, “who is designing this batch of merchandise?” Doja Cat responded that she didn’t know.

This is the case for most artists, as it turns out. Though their names and faces are on it, artists often aren’t in charge of manufacturing or doing quality control before merch is shipped out to fans — this is usually handled by merchandising companies who work with an array of artists. But despite this, some artists’ merch has been well-received by fans. Billie Eilish, for example, is known for her sustainable and unique merchandise; she even recently included a vegan pearl necklace in the merch for her sophomore album, Happier Than Ever. Megan Thee Stallion’s merch has also redefined typical artist-sold clothing by giving fans the option to personalize their designs, allowing them to pick from various cutout images of her to paste in a graphic T-shirt before ordering.

For artists like Rodrigo, with young fans who have limited budgets, they likely struggle to produce merch that is both good quality and inexpensive. And with celebrity merch frequently disappointing buyers, some fans have become critical of celebs selling their merch at increasingly higher price points.

Artist merch is the intersection of fashion and pop culture — and it is more valuable than ever as it becomes a key way for fans to have a physical connection to an artist they love. For merch to be successful in the eyes of fans, it seemingly comes down to striking a balance between creativity and affordability. Correct spelling is always good, too.

Texture Talk: The Best Combs and Brushes for Curly Hair

If you have curly or coily hair, a thorough and effective detangling process is an essential part of maintaining hair health. To prevent tangles and single strand knots that can eventually lead to breakage, it’s important to detangle hair at every step of the washing and styling process — especially after taking hair out of a protective style. While it might be easy to remember to detangle hair, finding the right tools for your hair type, skill level and budget can be a task of its own. We’ve rounded up some of the best detangling brushes for curly hair, plus multipurpose combs and the perfect brush for slicking down edges, to make sure the only labour-intensive job you undertake is getting those tangles out of your hair.

Pattern Beauty Shower Brush

Pattern Beauty Shower Brush, $21, pattern.com

Tracee Ellis Ross is just as well known for her gorgeous toothy grin as she is for her voluminous curls. So creating a haircare line dedicated to curls and coils of all textures was a natural step for the Black-ish star. The Shower Brush is a standout product from her Pattern Beauty line. Made with several rows of thick rubber bristles and a comfortable, lightweight handle, this shower brush is perfect for getting tangles out while your hair is sopping wet. Not only does the brush help to define curls, but a portion of all Pattern Beauty sales go towards organizations and programs that help empower women and people of colour.

Christophe Robin Boar Bristle Detangling Paddle Hairbrush

Christophe Robin Boar Bristle Detangling Paddle Hairbrush, $135, sephora.ca

Yes, this brush comes with a pretty hefty price tag, but you know what else it comes with? Amazing detangling capabilities! Each natural boar bristle is actually a different length to make latching onto each strand of hair a breeze, thus preventing breakage. The boar bristles, which are well known for adding tons of shine to hair, will leave your hair tangle-free, imparting looser curls with a more defined and bouncy look.

Ibiza Hair Round Brush

Ibiza Hair Round Brush, $68, amazon.ca

It’s no secret that the key to an amazing blowout is blow-drying your hair using a round brush. That said, the majority of round brushes on the market are made of ceramic which can be damaging on textured hair. For those of us with curly hair, to get the bounciest, glossiest blowout, a boar bristle round brush, like this one, is your best bet. Not only does this brush help keep hair soft and shiny, but it’s also great for distributing oils throughout the hair and improving overall hair health.

Denman Brush

Denman Brush, $42, walmart.ca

Small but mighty, the Denman Brush is an absolute classic for many folks with naturally curly hair. The long bristles help you get close to the scalp and rid your hair of any tangles that might be at the root. Their length makes this a great option for people with shorter hair as well — use it to rake through conditioner or as a last step before pulling hair into a twist out with seriously defined curls.

Wetbrush Pro Detangling Comb

Wetbrush Pro Detangling Comb, $11, chatters.ca

The wide-tooth comb is an oft-forgotten gem of the beauty world and a total staple in any curly hair toolkit. Not only is it perfect for distributing product throughout the hair, but it can be used to comb through already styled curls without separating them and creating frizz. Bonus: the Pro Detangling Comb from WetBrush has a grip on the handle ease the styling process.

DANNYCO WTZ Wood Teasing Brush With Boar Bristles

Is Men’s Hosiery the Future of Gender-Fluid Fashion?

Men in tights are having a moment. Don’t believe me? Take, for instance, fashion-forward celebrities like Harry Styles and Lil Nas X, who have worn pantyhose under dresses on red carpets, press events and magazine covers. For Prada’s Fall 2021 menswear collection, the combined genius of Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons resulted in models strutting in skin-tight leggings and onesies (see look 22).  The impact of men’s hosiery can also be seen on our screens: RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Witcher, and Marvel’s Avengers have all become phenomenons and hey, if I can see the outline of “America’s Ass” — the title (fittingly) given to Chris Evans’ Captain America — then it counts as tights!

Besides caped crusaders and obvious Robin Hood references, pantyhose is gaining popularity as a unisex accessory. Enter the new line Threads for Men, a collection of Italian-made hosiery, designed by Toronto-based Threads to fit male anatomy better and end the stigma surrounding men in tights.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Threads (@threads.co)

Founder Xenia Chen started conceptualizing the idea after learning through Facebook ads that 50 percent (yes, you read that right) of their existing customer base identified as male, with ages ranging from 20 to 75.

“I thought these guys must be buying them for their wives or their girlfriends or moms,” shares Chen on our call. “I soon realized that these men were actually just buying for themselves.”

As Chen and her team began diving deeper into research, unexpected groups emerged.

“We have a lot of customers who do drag, so they’re more open about it. And then there’s another group that is more secretive, wearing [hosiery] for comfort and warmth. We actually have a review on our website of this guy who works out in the bushes — where there are many bugs and mosquitoes — and he says that he wears tights because it prevents insects from biting him.”

Function versus fashion has been at the heart of the tight-aissance since the 13th century. Initially worn by men during Medieval times (and later abandoned for trousers around the 1800s), early leggings were constructed from woven stockings joined together with a cod-piece, a pouch that protected men’s crotches. While there are many theories behind the invention of tights — for additional warmth, to protect men’s skin while riding horseback, and/or to cover their legs as tunics got shorter — the intended purpose was one of practicality.

A post shared by Tynomi Banks (@tynomibanks)

For Canadian drag superstar Tynomi Banks, hosiery serves a pragmatic purpose: giving her shape and adding to the overall transformation. Wearing six (!) pairs of pantyhose at one time, Banks says tights are the key to “melting” everything together by hiding pad lines, further cinching her waist, and covering leg hair. “It’s like the skeleton or the blueprint before you build the house,” Banks says with a laugh on our call.

A seasoned queen, it took her until Canada’s Drag Race to consistently wear hosiery and padding, as many of her costumes required it. While Banks says both “really elevate the look,” when I ask her what it feels like to wear so many layers, she describes it as a sensation of “blood loss” and like being in “a coma.”

“Drag is uncomfortable. We look fabulous, and we love it, but it is uncomfortable. [Wearing those tights and pads] you feel like a couch. Why don’t you just call Leons and buy us? I could be your couch!”

The obsession with compression isn’t just popular amongst drag queens. Balancing the fine line between hosiery and leggings — the difference is in the thickness and material — athletes have been crucial to rebranding and recoding men in tights as “masculine.” The shift was immediate as NBA all-stars like LeBron James could be seen wearing them on and off the court, often under their b-ball shorts, citing better circulation and warmth as the reason for adoption. Under Armour, Nike and Adidas quickly followed suit, marketing tights as “compression” garments, and men’s athleisure — tights included — flourished.

Influencer and creator Christian Thompson of @christianconfidential started wearing athletic tights in high school, as running was a big part of his adolescence. Always around the track and with a background in modelling, seeing men in tights “never felt weird.”

“When you look at your favourite superheroes, they’re all wearing tights. Men in tights have been around forever, and you saw them on actors in the theatre or sports. So to me, it’s not even new. It just feels like it’s been there [all along].”

It wasn’t until Thompson started experimenting more with fashion that he considered adding pantyhose to his repertoire. However, he understands that for many men, it can seem daunting.

“For the everyday guy, I would say that there is [a stigma attached to wearing tights]. And I understand. It’s been very hard for men — we’re just starting to allow them to embrace taking care of themselves and [the thought that] they want to look good. We still have a long way to go, but the more we see it in fashion, on TV or just people wearing them in general, I think that will help alleviate the stigma,” says Thompson.

Threads for Men was founded for that exact purpose: to fight toxic masculinity and provide a safe space for men to express themselves.

A post shared by Threads (@threads.co)

“For decades, men have been expected to dress a certain way, and with [this new line], we saw an opportunity to break gender barriers we’ve set in the past as a society,” said Chen in a press release.

At the core of this barrier is the public’s issue with gender binaries within fashion. Genders have been segregated physically, with men’s and women’s collections on opposite sides of stores, and mentally, with masculinity and dresses being deemed mutually exclusive, almost since the beginning of retail. Gender-fluid fashion has had many ups and downs in the 20th century. Just as WWII saw women wearing pants and adopting more “masculine” silhouettes, the 1950s ushered in a time of rigid gender stereotyping. Then the 1960’s came and disrupted the entire fashion system with the help of YSL’s infamous Le Smoking suit (the first woman’s suit ever to be designed by a man) and David Bowie‘s androgynous style. More recently though, gender-fluid fashion has come back with a vengeance. Think: Alessandro Michele’s first menswear collection for Gucci in 2015, Billie Porter wearing a Christian Siriano ballgown at the 2019 Oscars and pretty much Lil Nas X’s entire wardrobe.

Despite WWD reporting 56 percent of Gen Z consumers have shopped in both male and female sections of the store, older generations haven’t been as quick to adopt this new perspective.

“The number of emails we get from men that are like ‘this has been my secret for 40, 50 years, and the only person who knows is my wife’ is crazy,” Chen comments on our call. “[I hope these men] feel because a brand is speaking to them and accepting them, they can finally accept themselves. We’re all about listening to our customers and making sure that people will feel included.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tynomi Banks (@tynomibanks)

For Banks, tights make her feel strong. “There is a power in putting on tights. It should be fluid, and it doesn’t matter what gender has it on. I feel sexy. I feel empowered.”

She recognizes this isn’t the case for everyone. Despite not wearing them out of drag, Banks encourages those nervous to wear tights outside to adopt a “mind your own damn business” mentality.

“I think people are doing it behind closed doors because they’re afraid of what other people would think. [Drag and Drag Race has helped] open those doors a lot more because the show promotes self-love and openness. Do you feel amazing and sexy and happy [wearing tights]? Then who am I to shame you?”

The Internet Thinks Kylie Jenner Is Pregnant Again

Welcome to the Kardashian konspiracy theory korner of the internet. Today, we’ll be discussing the rumour currently circulating that Kylie Jenner is expecting baby number two. During her first pregnancy with daughter Stormi Webster, the beauty mogul completely removed herself from public view by halting sharing new photos on social media and mostly staying within her gated community. Three and a half years later, this has led some of Jenner’s fans to be extra suspicious of any out-of-the-ordinary activity from the celebrity influencer.

Over the past few days, some hard-hitting investigative journalism (or, internet stalking) has led a growing amount of people to believe that Jenner just might be pregnant again. Below, we examine the evidence.

There were no pictures of Kylie Jenner at her birthday party

Historically speaking, Kar-Jenner parties are no joke. They typically involve elaborate themes, extreme decor and a long list of high-profile guests. Their events are also always heavily documented on social media. (Note: even in the thick of the pandemic, the KUWTK stars celebrated Kendall Jenner’s birthday with a huge, maskless party. *Sighs.*) But Kylie’s 24th birthday celebration on August 10 was very low-key — perhaps even suspiciously so. Jenner posted photos of a brunch accompanied by an at-home painting class. While it was still remarkably expensive-looking, it wasn’t quite a Kylie-Jenner-extravagant party. Even more shocking? Not one photo of Jenner herself was posted from the gathering. Hmm.

Jenner did post a full-body pic of herself on IG for her birthday, looking trendy as ever in a custom-made Namita Khade dress. But fans suspect the picture was pre-taken. This is because the nails she’s sporting in the post look the same as the ones she was wearing a month earlier, on July 15, and don’t match the nails she had on her birthday. On her birthday evening, sister Kim Kardashian posted a snapshot of all the Kar-Jenner women raising a toast to celebrate Kylie’s big day. Included in the photo were Jenner’s nails, which sport an entirely different design than the nails pictured in her birthday post. Confusing, I know, but stay with me.

@emilycschwartzSome say I have no life. I agree. 💅🏻 #greenscreen #kyliejenner #kardashians♬ original sound – Emily

The great nail art mystery

After fans noticed the discrepancy in her nail art, the pregnancy conspiracy theory began to take off on TikTok. Jenner then posted a full-body mirror selfie on August 11, sporting her most recent nail art — seemingly to assure fans that her pictures are being taken in the present — but some of her followers still aren’t buying it. One popular TikTok theory is that Jenner has stocked up on old photos that she will share throughout her pregnancy to make it seem like they’re happening in real time. Also on August 11, Jenner posted to her pictures of food in a restaurant setting to her IG Stories, but there were no actual public fan or paparazzi sightings of the A-lister that day. This further cemented the theory that Jenner may be posting photos from the past to throw fans off.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott are likely back together

After breaking up in fall 2019, it appears Stormi’s parents are a couple again. Jenner posted a picture of the duo together in June when she visited the rapper in NYC for the 72nd annual Parsons Benefit. After the event, a source told People that the pair had *checks notes* a “different energy” between them. Scott also reportedly called Jenner his “wifey” that night. Love is clearly in the air… further pointing to the possibility that another baby is on the way.

If Jenner actually is pregnant, she is doing a great job of taking even her most dedicated sleuthing fans on a confusing ride. The Met Gala is next month, though, so fans will likely be watching closely to see if Jenner attends.
