Texture Talk: 10 Summer Hairstyles That Will Withstand Heat and Humidity

Before we dive in, let’s get one thing straight: frizz is definitely not the enemy. If you have curly or coiled hair, frizziness is an unavoidable part of its beautiful package, and should be embraced. However, there are instances where frizz and flyaways can turn a sleek and stylish hairdo into something that more resembles what your crown looks like after you’ve rolled out of bed. And in the summer months, humidity makes frizz that much more inevitable. For the days when you’re going for a sleeker finish, we rounded up some of the best summer hairstyles that will minimize frizz and are easy enough to DIY from the comfort of your home.

Sleek, low bun

A low bun is a go-to style for many naturalistas. Not only is it pretty easy to achieve, for the most part, but it’s the perfect style for just about any occasion. To keep flyaways at bay, try spraying hair with an anti-humidity spray, like The Shield Anti-Humidity Spray by Amika ($33). This spray will help to prolong the life of your bun and keep it looking sleeker for longer.

Jumbo box braids

Thick braids are an excellent protective style because they prevent the hair from being overly manipulated, which can be a major cause of frizz. Jumbo box braids are the perfect solution if you’re low on time and want to give your hair a break from styling for a few weeks.

Space buns

Space buns are fun, easy to do, and work on a variety of hair lengths. Make sure your hair has been fully detangled before parting it down the middle and using a scrunchie to secure each section. Try applying a holding gel, like Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Quinoa Frizz Control Gel ($26), to keep your hair in place and prevent it from frizzing up.

High puff with a head wrap

A high ponytail will always be a holy grail summer hairstyle for natural hair. Bonus points if you use a brightly coloured head wrap to spice things up. A pop of colour will instantly elevate the entire look while keeping flyaways at bay.

Braided Bantu knots

Bantu knots are a great style choice if you want your hair tucked away for a period of time without having to worry about maintenance. Begin by parting into multiple sections (how many will depend on how big you want your Bantu knots to be and how thick your hair is), braiding hair and then twisting it into a knot.

High braid

The braided high ponytail is probably one of the easiest styles on this list to replicate. Start by using a hard-bristled brush to gather hair at the top of your head, using whatever styling gel is part of your usual routine. You then braid the hair in that ponytail or for added length, try braiding in extensions similar to your natural texture for a seamless blend.

Halo braid

Notice a pattern yet? The more hair that’s tucked away in your summer hairdo, the less room for frizz. With this look, you can elevate your braid game even further. Begin by gathering your locks into one long braid and then wrapping that braid around your head, using bobby pins to secure your hair and keep it in place.

Wash and go with a barrette

If there’s one hairstyle that is notorious for being prone to frizz, it’s the wash and go. However, sometimes when you’re in a bit of a time crunch, that’s all you really have time to do. Help to control frizz by pinning the sides of your hair with a fun barrette, like this pair of Clear Crystal Clips by Duplantis Hair ($19). If and when your hair does begin to puff slightly, the frizz will only add volume while the barrettes keep your edges looking polished.

Faux hawk

A faux hawk or “frohawk” is a great style for everyone, but particularly for those with shorter hair. Create it after taking down a twist-out or braid-out for more defined curls, or after washing and applying a leave-in conditioner if you’d like to display your curls in their most natural state. If you’re opting for a more defined look, try using a product like the Curl Anti-Humidity Gel Oil by Bumble and Bumble ($39), which not only helps to define and moisturize curls but also helps to protect against humidity.

Banded topknot

Everyone loves a classic topknot, but have you tried this banded method for a chic, updated version? The bands will help elongate your hair while keeping it in place. For a super sleek and smooth finish, use an at-home keratin treatment like the Goldwell Kerasilk Reconstruct Intensive Repair Mask ($57) prior to creating your topknot.

Can I Dress Like Olivia Rodrigo, Please?

Twenty minutes before I sat down for dinner last night, I found myself personally attacked. A seemingly harmless Instagram DM, my best friend and fellow pink enthusiast shared a photo of Gen Z superstar Olivia Rodrigo at the White House. Dressed in a vintage Chanel tweed ensemble, the message that followed from my friend was one of few words:” Swoooooon!!”

I may have audibly gasped.

Among the people that know me best, I’m known for a few things: My height (buying mini dresses for a 5’11” frame is a challenge); my endless enthusiasm (I was once told I’m the personification of an animated Disney movie which may or may not have been a compliment); a very loud laugh (which I have no control over); and my love of both Clueless and mod fashion. Essentially what I’m getting at is Olivia Rodrigo stole my dream look.

A post shared by President Joe Biden (@potus)

On Wednesday, Rodrigo met with U.S. President Joe Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci to film videos promoting youth vaccination in the country. As teenagers remain some of the least vaccinated in America, it was actually Rodrigo’s idea to collaborate with the Biden Administration. According to CNN, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters, “I will say, not every 18-year-old uses their time to come do this, so we appreciate her willingness to.”

Moving on from the politics of Rodrigo’s appearance, for those who haven’t yet dissected the outfit, let me do so for you. The “Driver’s License” singer wore a polished yet trendy pink, black, and white Chanel tweed skirt suit, accessorized with white Giuseppe Zanotti platforms, Justine Clenquet earrings, and a tiny black Amina Muaddi purse. The 1995 vintage ensemble was a nod to not only the fashion of historic First Ladies (hello, Jacqueline Kennedy!) but also iconic heroines Elle Woods from Legally Blonde and Cher Horowitz from Clueless.

A post shared by Bella 🦋 (@bellahadid)

The fashion choice felt especially serendipitous given Legally Blonde’s 20th anniversary just the day before and Burberry’s ode to Cher’s infamous plaid look, recently seen on Bella Hadid at the Cannes Film Festival.

A post shared by Reese Witherspoon (@reesewitherspoon)

Both film characters are cemented in pop culture herstory (a RuPaul-ism that plays on the word history, of course) for their fashion: In the case of Elle Woods, her pink wardrobe was more than just an emblem of the prevalent Malibu Barbie stereotype. It was a feminist reclamation of exaggerated femininity — symbolized by her love of pink fashion — as society has traditionally discounted pretty women who enjoy “girly” things.

In Cher Horowitz’s case, the film itself is beloved for its female friendships, female empowerment and the costumes that sparked a thousand trends (including matching co-ords, plaid skirts, slip dresses and Mary Janes, just to name a few).

While it has yet to be revealed if Olivia Rodrigo chose her pink Chanel ensemble as an ode to iconic feminist fashion figures or to unleash my inner green-eyed monster, her look remains the perfect inspiration for 2021 power dressing. Now all I have to do is find another pink vintage Chanel suit. In the immortal words of Elle Woods: “What, like it’s hard?”

Finally — Britney Spears Has Been Granted the Right to Choose Her Own Lawyer

In a major win for the #FreeBritney movement, a judge granted Britney Spears’s request to hire her own attorney in the ongoing battle concerning her 13-year conservatorship. The decision was made on July 14, in a Los Angeles hearing where Spears addressed the court by phone. The 39-year-old pop star said wants her father and co-conservator, Jamie Spears, not only removed from the conservatorship but also charged with conservatorship abuse.

This hearing was the first since her viral court appearance on June 23, where Spears made a 20-minute statement calling the conservatorship “abusive,” and accusing her family and members of her team of using it to control and exploit her. Following the internet’s reaction to her explosive testimony, many who were suspected of involvement in the conservatorship have sought to distance themselves from it. Among recent resignations are Bessemer Trust, a wealth and investment management firm that was appointed as co-conservator in August 2020; Larry Rudolph, Spears’s long-time manager; and Samuel Ingham III, the star’s court-appointed lawyer.

After last month’s hearing, Ingham faced backlash for having reportedly advised Spears not to speak out about the conservatorship. He is also suspected of participating in it, with The New Yorker citing a source who said Ingham was more loyal to the conservatorship and to Spears’s father than to Spears herself. Thanks to the July 14 decision, Spears is moving forward with new legal representation of her own choosing: former federal prosecutor Matthew Rosengart.

Rosengart, who has represented high-profile celebrities like Steven Spielberg and Sean Penn, said he will be “moving promptly and aggressively” to remove Jamie Spears from the conservatorship. In court, he questioned the validity of the arrangement and said he and a team of attorneys from his firm would be looking at the details and examining why it was implemented to begin with back in 2008.

“The question remains: why is he involved?” said Rosengart of Jamie Spears’s role as co-conservator. “He should step down voluntarily, as that is in the best interest of Britney Spears.”

Spears reportedly broke into tears at the end of her testimony, where she revealed more shocking details about the conservatorship. She described being denied basic requests like coffee, vitamins for her hair, and access to her driver’s licence.

The singer declared that she wants the conservatorship to end immediately without having to undergo any more “stupid” evaluations. She described feeling “extremely scared” of her father and said she felt those involved in the conservatorship were trying to kill her. “If this is not abuse, I don’t know what is,” she said. In court, Jamie Spears’s lawyer Vivian Thoreen denied these claims, saying that he has always had his daughter’s best interest in mind.

After the July 14 hearing, Spears took to social media to celebrate her victory. She posted a video of stitched-together clips showing her doing cartwheels and riding a horse. “New with real representation today … I feel GRATITUDE and BLESSED !!!!” she wrote in the post’s caption. “Thank you to my fans who are supporting me … You have no idea what it means to me be supported by such awesome fans !!!! God bless you all !!!!!”

She ended the post by writing “#FreeBritney,” which is the first time the star herself has used the hashtag dedicated to her on social media. This public acknowledgment of the movement represents a shift in Spears’s presence on social media, which has long been questioned by fans for being overly curated, fake-seeming, and at times outright bizarre. After last month’s internet-breaking hearing, Spears took to Instagram to “apologize for pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years.”

Now equipped with legal counsel of her own choosing and more liberty to speak out about her conservatorship, Spears is making a significant stride toward freedom — and hopefully justice.

Never Have I Ever’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan on Mental Health, Online Hate and Being “Team Devi”

A mere few weeks ago, Mississauga, Ont.-raised Maitreyi Ramakrishnan had never seen a billboard with her face on it IRL. When the Tamil-Canadian star burst onto the scene last year when her hit Netflix comedy, Never Have I Ever, debuted early in the pandemic, she had to navigate her sudden fame virtually. That’s all about to change — including her billboard count. Now, Ramakrishnan has seen two, one at Yonge-Dundas Square in her home province, and another in New York’s Times Square. “It was awesome to see,” the 19-year-old says from NYC, where she’s visiting for the very first time for press (and pizza, of course, which she’s already had twice). “Fans actually saw me there taking pictures in front of it and were like, ‘Can we take a picture with you?’ It was really cool.”

If the success of the first season of Never Have I Ever — which was co-created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher — is any indication, it’s safe to assume that Ramakrishnan can expect a lot more of this kind of attention headed her way. The teen quickly won over hearts as Devi Vishwakumar, the show’s hilarious and delightfully flawed protagonist — a role she beat out 15,000 applicants for after Kaling put out an open casting call on Twitter.

In season two, which drops on Netflix on July 15, Ramakrishnan shines even brighter. She’s grown as a performer, and Devi, now digging deeper into her own mental health, has grown a lot, too. The high schooler is also dealing with her fair share of teen drama, including (secretly) juggling relationships with two boys: academic rival turned pal Ben, and hot jock Paxton. FASHION caught up with Ramakrishnan to talk all things Never Have I Ever season two.

How are you feeling about season two of Never Have I Ever premiering this week?

I am very excited for everyone to see it, but I’m just as equally anxious knowing that people are going to watch all of it. There are a lot of emotions, for sure.

How does this feeling compare to how you were feeling when the first season of Never Have I Ever premiered?

In some ways, I’m feeling less [anxious], and in other ways, I’m feeling more. For season one, I had no idea what to expect — it was like my first rodeo. And I never understood how lame [hate] comments can be, and how they can actually be really upsetting. I didn’t think they’d be as bad as people talked about. When [I started getting them], I was like, “Oh, damn. This sucks.” But this time I sort of know what to expect. I think I’m going to be better this time around, because I know that they’re coming. I’ve grown to learn that you have to focus on the positives — as easy as that is to say, and as hard as that it is to actually do.

It’s terrible that internet hate is something you’ve had to basically just accept and live with. How have you learned to manage it?

Instead of complaining about what’s going on, I ask, “Okay, how can we fix this? What’s the plan?” That’s my mentality for a lot of things. But then you realize that you can’t — this is a problem the other party won’t fix. So it’s sort of on you, unfortunately, to grow up and get over it. It’s really unfair, but it’s the truth. So with that logic, I just have to take it one day at a time and surround myself with the people and things I love and actually make me feel good.

Outside of that, did you feel more equipped to tackle a second season of Never Have I Ever after doing the first?

I mean, during season one, I knew nothing. I had no idea what a mark was, when you started acting, all these technical things. Because I knew [that side of] things more [going into filming season two], this time I was like, “We’re going to be better. You have no excuse. You’re not a newcomer anymore.” That, of course, still comes with its own pressures of wanting to be perfect, which essentially doesn’t exist.

It sounds like, in the context of work, you are harder on yourself than most other people probably would be.

Oh my god, yes. It’s really bad, I know. Lots of people call me out on it and tell me that I don’t appreciate my accomplishments. Earlier today, someone listed them all out in an interview and I was like, “Oh yeah. I forgot about that.” I tend to just say, “Okay, cool, thank you. What’s next?” I think that I’ve got to keep working, I’ve got to do more, I’ve got to do it all. So yeah, I’m slightly harder on myself.

What were you excited to explore with Devi in season two of Never Have I Ever?

When we got renewed for season two, I was so excited because I wanted to know what happens to Devi next. I had no idea where we were going to go, or what new characters were going to come in. But my favourite thing that we tackled in season two is Devi’s journey with mental health. Last season, it was all about her grief and mourning the loss of her father, specifically. This season it’s about how we feel in our own heads about ourselves.

What have you learned from Devi on this journey so far?

The biggest thing I’ve learned from her is that you actually can’t be perfect. You can’t. This girl isn’t perfect and she’s trying real hard. Sometimes, when she messes up, it’s not in her control, but she thinks it is and she takes all of it onto her own shoulders. Of course, it’s something I’m working on, but it’s a nice, gentle reminder, like, “Hey, Maitreyi, maybe you shouldn’t do the same thing either.”

You’re just a couple of years older than Devi. What’s one thing you’d tell her if you could?

Devi needs a good, solid hug. That kid does not like herself at all. When I was younger, I was in that same spot where I’d be like, “Man, I’d rather be anybody else.” She wants to be a good person, but she doesn’t think she is. I’d tell her: “You’re okay. You are a good person. You’re not as bad as you think you are.”

As a viewer, what are your thoughts on the Ben vs. Paxton debate?

Oh, I’m on the obvious team: Team Devi. It’s the pretty cool team, we have refreshments and snacks. Before I said “Team Devi,” no one else was saying it, so now I take full credit for the existence of the term, baby. I’m saying it right here, right now.

Timothée Chalamet and Tilda Swinton Are Fashion’s Favourite New Friendship

The internet loves nothing more than an affectionate and platonic duo — it’s what feeds the incessant chatter on Twitter, the carousels of Instagram and the many, many interview montages scattered across YouTube. Previous additions to the “Internet Obsession Hall of Fame” include Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, and Zendaya and Tom Holland (who are now reportedly dating). The July 12 premiere of Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival marked the induction of social media’s new favourite non-couple: Timothée Chalamet and Tilda Swinton.

Co-stars Timothée Chalamet and Tilda Swinton arrived at Cannes in a series of complimentary outfits that shone individually but positively dazzled together. At the film’s screening, Chalamet’s silver Tom Ford suit punctuated by white accents was a nod to the decadence of ’80s glamour. Swinton chose a cropped, pink satin bolero blazer and top with an orange floor-length skirt by frequent collaborator Haider Ackermann. Never one to miss an opportunity for theatrical flair, Swinton added green sequin sleeves.

Yes, the fashion was fabulous. Yes, we love all the androgynous fashion moments Chalamet and Swinton have given us over the years. But what made this Cannes red carpet so special was the photos that came out of it. These two are so clearly fans of each other that it’s hard not to be charmed by their mutual adoration. And the handholding, head resting and swoon-worthy smiles just kept coming as the festival progressed.

At a Cannes photo call for The French Dispatch a day later, Chalamet and Swinton once again showcased their A+ style and proved that opposites really do attract. In his trademark effortlessly cool aesthetic, the actor wore slouchy pants tucked into chunky boots and a blush T-shirt from cult brand Elara. Swinton took a very different approach and wore a striking blue suit, again by Haider Ackermann, further cementing her status as a fashion icon.

As for the rest of The French Dispatch crew, filmmaker Wes Anderson and crowd favourite Bill Murray also had their own delightful red carpet moments (minus the handholding). While Anderson opted for a seersucker pastel suit, Murray looked like he was ready for a Hawaiian vacation. Between the chaotically printed short-sleeved button-down, baby blue shorts, and Fedora, these co-stars were quite the eclectic bunch.

As seen with the fashion from the stars of The French Dispatch, the film festival’s red carpet has gotten a bit of a refresh this year. The Cannes aesthetic is typically characterized by its timeless glamour and couture showpieces (think Amal Clooney wearing Atelier Versace in 2016). As new and renowned stars come to debut their latest films, glitzy gowns and luxe tuxedos reign supreme in a display of opulence and old-timey Hollywood. But just as we saw in Balenciaga’s Fall 2021 couture collection, the future of glamour is being redefined as decidedly more relaxed. Celebs are clearly on board as denim has been a favourite in recent red carpet looks. Most recently, Marion Cotillard wore a floor-length jean dress by Chanel to the De Son Vivant premiere, and both Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin wore jeans to the film call for Jane Par Charlotte. While it’s unclear if a casual dress code will continue to work its way through Cannes and the upcoming award season, red carpets have never featured so many diverse looks, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.

The 2021 Emmy Nominations You Need to Know About

Over the past 16 months, good television has been one of our only saving graces, offering us a welcome distraction during trying times. The Emmy Awards are when we hope to see our favourite shows get the recognition they deserve, and given TV’s increased presence in our lives throughout the pandemic, that feels more important than ever. On July 13, the nominations for the 73rd annual Emmy Awards were released, and social media was quickly taken over by fans’ mixed reactions. Though this isn’t a comprehensive list of the Emmy nominations 2021, here’s our take on this year’s most notable Emmy nods, from delightful surprises to the saddest snubs.

Biggest surprises

Emily in Paris

The show, starring Lily Collins, earned a nomination for Best Comedy Series, and we’re truly confused. Despite being renewed for a second season, Emily in Paris has been on the receiving end of continuous backlash for depicting an ultra-Americanized version of France, filled with tired clichés about French people while following the main character Emily, who is a little too girlboss-y for her own good. Twitter’s reaction to this nomination feels like a collective virtual head shake, with viewers questioning how and why the flawed show has been nominated over more deserving comedies. (FWIW, the show was no doubt a welcome escape for many during the pandemic and while we can appreciate the froth of it all, it feels a bit… out of its league up against shows like Hacks and Black-ish.)

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Oprah interview

Yes, you read that right. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s sit-down interview with Oprah earned a nomination for Best Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special. The interview, which aired in March and quickly went viral, exposed surprising details about the couple’s time as working members of the British royal family. It also served as a lesson to journalists everywhere on how to conduct The Best Interview, with Oprah quotes like, “Were you silent, or were you silenced?” now forever etched into the pop culture history books.

Hamilton

Loyalty is the prevailing theme among Hamilton fans. Almost six years after premiering on Broadway and earning 11 Tony Awards, the play-turned-Disney+ film project raked up 12 Emmy nominations. Individual members of the show received plenty of recognition, with nominations going to Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also wrote the recently released musical-turned-film In The Heights), Leslie Odom Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff and Anthony Ramos.

Most heartwarming mentions

MJ Rodriguez

MJ Rodriguez made history as the first openly transgender actor to be nominated in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress. Rodriguez earned the nod for her role in Pose, a drama series about New York City’s underground drag ball culture in the 1980s and 1990s. Pose has earned a total of 11 Emmy nominations over its first two seasons, but this is the first time a member of the series’s predominantly trans female cast has been recognized with a nod.

Regé-Jean Page

Regé-Jean Page received an Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as the Duke of Hastings in Netflix’s hit Regency drama Bridgerton. While we’re thrilled to see Page receive his first Emmy nom, this serves as a painful reminder that the fan-favourite actor won’t be returning to the show for its second season.

Most disappointing snubs

Girls5Eva

The plot: a one-hit-wonder girl group from the ’90s reunites to give their dreams another shot. The execution: an adventurous musical comedy. The cast: full of gems like Renée Elise Goldsberry and Busy Philipps. What’s not to love? Sadly, it seems the Emmys overlooked this one. While the show’s pilot was nominated in a writing category, fans were expecting more Emmy recognition, especially since the show was executive produced by Emmy-favourite Tina Fey. Luckily, Girls5Eva has a second season guaranteed, so we’re holding out hope for next year.

Beyoncé and Taylor Swift

No, Bey and Taylor didn’t low-key collab on a drama series (although that would be amazing). The artists respectively released musical streaming specials this year, Beyoncé with the Disney+ film Black Is King, and Swift with Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions. Though both releases were adored by fans, neither earned nominations for Outstanding Variety Special, or any other categories, for that matter.

Biggest “duhs”

Mare of Easttown

HBO’s Mare of Easttown not only enthralled audiences with an incredible performance by Kate Winslet, but kept us hooked with its mystery-filled plot. The seven-episode mini-series felt like an honest exploration of grief that we don’t always see onscreen and has been receiving praise since its release. Unsurprisingly, the show received 16 Emmy nominations.

I May Destroy You

Finally, some justice for Michaela Coel! After being snubbed at the most recent Golden Globes Awards, the show recently picked up two BAFTA Awards and a Peabody, and is only continuing this momentum with nine Emmy nominations. I May Destroy You, which stars and was written by Coel, forces viewers to think deeply about consent and the truly uncomfortable work that goes into dealing with trauma. The show earned these nominations almost a full year after its release — showing just how impactful and important it is.

WandaVision

Marvel fans rejoice! The sci-fi sitcom has had everyone talking since its release earlier this year, and rightfully collected 23 Emmy nominations, including lead actor nods for its stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. We’re especially jazzed to see Olsen get her flowers, as her performance in the genre-blurring series has further confirmed her dynamic acting abilities.

The 2021 Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday, September 19 beginning at 8 p.m. ET, and can be streamed by Canadians on Paramount Plus. After being held virtually last year due to COVID-19, this year’s ceremony will be held in-person (!) complete with a live audience and red carpet, and hosted by American TV personality Cedric the Entertainer. Due to COVID precautions, the audience will be limited to just the nominees and their guests, and the ceremony will be broadcast live from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.
