The 2021 CAFA Awards Virtual Red Carpet Is a Canadian Fashion Dream

The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA) gala looks different this year, and so does its CAFA 2021 red carpet. Ahead of tonight’s virtual ceremony celebrating Canadian excellence in the fashion industry, the style set got glammed up for remote close-ups in ensembles by their favourite Canadian designers in lieu of a live red carpet. Photographers George Pimentel and Jimmy Hamelin darted around Toronto and Montreal capturing the local looks and it’s a completely unique spin on a virtual red carpet.

From new mother Deborah Lau-Yu donning jewellery by J.Y. GAO, to Narces designer Nikki Wirthensohn Yassemi balancing tulle and sequins on a steep staircase, Canadian fashion’s finest spared no glamour. Anishinaabe activist and stylist Sarain Fox evinces bird-like energy in a lush forest, while Myles Sexton serves up a *moment* in an extravagant David Dunkley headpiece and Montreal-made Denis Gagnon dress. Each is an exhibit of its own.

FASHION Magazine’s very own editor-in-chief Bernadette Morra graces us in a Greta Constantine dress that is equivalent to sunshine, while creative & fashion director George Antonopoulos wears Toronto treasure U3. With much more to see, browse the gallery below for a nation-wide parade of fashion-forward moments worn by some of the biggest supporters of Canadian fashion on the virtual CAFA 2021 red carpet.

Meet Tina Chen Craig (a.k.a. Bag Snob), an OG Fashion Blogger Turned Skincare Brand Founder

When Tina Chen Craig launched her blog Bag Snob with Kelly Cook back in September 2005, she set the wheels in motion to become one of the original fashion bloggers. The bags and accessories blog, of course, took off and later transformed into a multifaceted business that includes advertising, consulting, e-commerce and a handbag line. Today, Craig is the proud founder of another venture that pivots away from fashion — a new luxury skincare line called U Beauty that counts Chiara Ferragni, Nicky Hilton and Joanna Czech as fans.

As part of our series of profiles in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we caught up with U Beauty founder Tina Chen Craig to chat all things beauty, including how her grandmother shaped her appreciation for skincare.

On her lifelong relationship with beauty

“Beauty was [always] a huge part of my life. My first memories are of my grandmother shoving chicken feet, bone broth, bitter melon and snow fungus in my face for good skin. With Chinese people, it’s all about having good, healthy skin so I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until I was 17. I would sneak my makeup out of the house, of course. But I was taught beauty starts from the inside — what we ate. My grandmother also taught me about sunscreen, which I rejected as a teenager in the ’80s in California. I was like ‘No, I want baby oil.’ Overall, though, growing up, my relationship with beauty was not about hiding my face or hiding my skin; it was about showing it off. As a college kid, I couldn’t afford the La Prairie eye serums but I’d hang out at Neiman Marcus to get the free samples. I befriended all the people working behind the skincare counters. And then I would watch them eat a grapefruit and put the peel on their face afterward and I always thought that was so embarrassing. My mom would also ferment rice water to make this fermented rice wine dessert with little mochi balls, and then the other half she’d put on her face and her hair. It was with these things that I learned about acids. They were doing an alpha-hydroxy peel with their grapefruits, and getting enzymes from the rice.”

On the influence of her grandmother’s home remedies

“I took the lessons I learned about simplicity with me. My grandmother and my mom didn’t use 50 things. They had a few favourites, like Clinique and Estée Lauder, and that was it. They were very simple.”

On appreciation vs. appropriation in the beauty industry

“There are appropriate ways of highlighting the source of certain practices in the beauty industry, like gua sha and 12-step routines, and that’s by crediting Asian cultures. If you’re not a person of Asian descent and you don’t credit our culture, you’re whitewashing these old traditions and essentially saying ‘We can do it better.’ That’s when it becomes offensive. Another example is cupping. I used to be embarrassed and cover up my [cupping marks] and when I see people [recommending but not mentioning the history of the practice of] cupping now it’s like, ‘Oh my god, that was once my source of shame.”

On launching her new beauty brand, U Beauty

“I never thought I’d launch my own brand. There are so many skincare brands and I was working with some of the top brands in the world like Clé de Peau, Charlotte Tilbury, Augustinus Bader. I’ve always had a deep obsession with skin, which was fuelled by my Chinese grandmother. I was boasting about my 13-step skincare routine before Instagram was even a thing. But after about a decade and a half of doing that, I was like, ‘Holy shit I have cosmetic confusion and so does everybody else.’ I was like ‘Why do I have to put on retinol at night on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, then lactic acid on Tuesdays and Thursdays…and then my face blows up anyway with a rosacea flare-up.’ So I started working with skincare brands that were more minimal, but the next thing you know, they’ve come out with 50 different products they wanted to hire me to talk about. So I set out to really simplify my routine. I only used Aquaphor for two weeks.

“One night I had dinner with an old friend who’s a seasoned beauty brand developer and she said she’d been thinking the same things. She later introduced me to this clinical lab in Italy she’d partnered with. We met and I spent hours talking about my dreams. Instead of saying no, they said ‘Yes, it’s possible, but nobody has wanted to do that because it’s expensive.’ Every brand wants to sell consumers 30 different products, obviously. Like, why would you combine everything? There’s no business plan for that. But we formulated a sample anyway, and that became our proprietary technology. It’s engineered to interact with skin as if it’s an actual skin molecule. So the capsule mimics a healthy skin cell and lures free radicals, which materialize as vulnerable damaged areas in our skin. So when you apply the product, it releases the active ingredients only onto the damaged parts of your face. It interacts with the skin as if it’s an actual healthy skin cell.”

On beauty advice for her younger self

“Lay off the blue eyeshadow and hairspray.”

Demi Lovato Comes Out As Non-Binary

Singer Demi Lovato announced today that they are non-binary and will be using the pronouns they/them moving forward. The musician shared the news in a video shared on Twitter, followed by a series of tweets explaining their decision.

“I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson,” they said. “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones.”

Lovato — who came out as pansexual in March, meaning they can be attracted to anyone regardless of gender — called this new discovery a “revelation” and said it has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work.

Lovato elaborated on the topic on the first episode of their new podcast, 4D With Demi Lovato, engaging in a discussion with non-binary artist Alok Vaid-Menon about what it means to be non-binary and debunking stereotypes and misconceptions associated with the LGBTQ+ community.

In the episode, Lovato said that they were living inauthentically and feeling uncomfortable for years before reckoning with their identity. They recently opened up about their struggles with mental health and addiction in the YouTube docuseries Dancing with the Devil, which followed the events surrounding Lovato’s near-fatal overdose in 2018.

Vaid-Menon raised the point that because they are in the public eye, some people may accuse Lovato of coming out for attention, or to further their career in some way. To that, Lovato said they understand, but they can’t afford to care. “For the first time in my life, I’m putting my wellbeing over my career. And that’s the difference in somebody doing something for attention, versus speaking your truth,” they said.

“I know that not everybody is going to love that this is me… [but] I can’t shove it down or suppress it any longer, or I’ll end up where I did a few years ago. And I never want to end up there again.”

Lovato recalled their overdose in 2018 as a result of them suppressing their true self to please those who wanted them to be “the sexy, feminine pop star in the leotard.”

During the podcast episode, Lovato and Vaid-Menon also touched on the fluidity of gender expression, noting that gender identity doesn’t necessarily translate to the way we present.

“There might be a time when I want to wear a full wig, there might be a time when I want to dress completely femme-presenting. And that doesn’t mean that in that moment I’m identifying as a woman, it just means that that’s what I want to wear in that moment,” Lovato said. “I want people to understand that just because I’m non-binary doesn’t mean I’m not going to dress the way I want.”

Living outside the gender binary is nothing new. For thousands of years, Indigenous cultures around the world have embraced gender and sexual diversity, but its common acceptance was largely repressed with the onset of colonization in the Western world.

With a growing number of people now coming out as queer, transgender and non-binary, the existence and validity of these identities is being reinforced. “It’s not that we are new, it’s that we’ve been so thoroughly erased that the only response is to be visible,” said Vaid-Menon.

In recent years, other big names in the entertainment industry have come out as non-binary and gender nonconforming. In December, Canadian actor Elliot Page announced they are transgender and non-binary, saying, “I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”

Coming out is without a doubt a daunting experience. When celebrities — who are subject to constant scrutiny from the public — do so, they shape the entertainment industry to be more inclusive, while expanding the scope of representation for gender-diverse people.

For Lovato, coming out is a liberating experience. “There’s nothing more freeing for me than to be unattached to a role that society wants me to play.”

Canadian Designer Tanya Taylor Is Just Getting Started

Watching Tanya Taylor grow her fashion label into a lifestyle brand has been like witnessing a flower bloom. Since launching her label in 2012, the New York-based Canadian designer has carved her own path in the industry, taking a stance on matters like offering extended sizing (Taylor expanded her regular size offering to include 0 to 22 in 2017), fostering human connection by hosting luncheons with women leaders, and encouraging political engagement by adding a voter registration Action Button to her website. Recently, she launched Tanya Taylor Mini, a children’s capsule collection of looks that match mom’s.

Just shy of her company’s 10th anniversary, Taylor is being honoured in her hometown of Toronto, where she will receive the CAFA 2021 International Canadian Designer Award. Ahead of the virtual ceremony this evening, we caught up with the designer to talk about growth, finding confidence and fashion post-COVID-19.

How she grew her community

“When I started the brand, I knew I wanted it to be a contemporary price point and I wanted it to have a lot of versatility. Our turning point was really when Michelle Obama started wearing us. It was really interesting because it was at the same time that Beyoncé was wearing us, and Taylor Swift. We started to feel like the brand could speak to a wide range of women and ages, body types, sensibilities about fashion. As the community aspects of the brand have grown, so has the collection. And those two things have really inspired each other. There’s a lot more depth and range now.”

Where she finds creative inspiration

“Over quarantine, our design team really turned to new techniques. We were collaging, we were doing weird DIY ice cube melting, we were just getting really creative with the materials around us. Outside of that, female fine artists are always inspirational to me. I’ve tried to always immerse myself in being able to see new artists and then falling in love with Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, older artists that have really relevant stories of trying to be inspirational women in times that maybe were less celebratory of female artists.”

Her proudest career moments

“I was able to bring my mom to the White House to meet Michelle Obama which was so cool. It was for the final party that they had in January [2016] before leaving and it was just epic. You had to check your phone at the door, it was a raging dance party and I got to have the time of my life with my mom. It was special. And then moving into our new office a year and a half ago felt like a real steppingstone of being able to build a showroom and have a home for us that I was really proud of.”

The advice she has for her younger self

“I was really nervous, starting out, and really, really anxious and insecure. Jumping into an industry that is scary to start with and where I didn’t know anyone was all of my worst nightmares coming crashing [in]. I’ve had to overcome a lot of social fears. Finding people that bring out your confidence and finding ways to boost yourself is really important in the beginning.”

On receiving the CAFA 2021 International Canadian Designer Award

“This recognition really pushes our team to feel like they can keep building. It’s a nice moment for us after a lot of hard work. My favourite part of this is what it opens in terms of mentorship and helping support younger designers. I really like talking to younger designers who are thinking of entering the industry and explaining my story of not knowing anyone in New York and not knowing anyone in the industry and what it takes, in terms of a lot of hard work and curiosity, to keep going.”

Where she thinks the fashion industry will go post-COVID

“There’s a lot more attention to responsible manufacturing and responsible development, and more attention to the customer and making things that will actually be produced and loved. And that doesn’t take away the art of it. I’m really happy that people took a second to stop making things for things’ sake and really stepped back to make sure their brands look like what they love. And I think that will make the market less duplicative and more signature to the personalities of each brand.”

On Canada’s fashion strengths

“I have a passion for what Canadian manufacturing could look like in the future. There’s such an opportunity for the talent here to have access to creating what they want to create in their backyard. I think that that’s something that down the road should exist and should be supported by the government in some ways. That’s a barrier I hear from a lot of younger designers in Ontario is that they can design something but to produce that outside of Canada is so expensive and they don’t necessarily have the contacts to take that step and hold that amount of investment. I think there’s something there, and that’s a project I’m working on. Canadians have really unique voices. If we can pair that with retail support and manufacturing support, there’s a lot of opportunity.”

April 2021: Grande and Gomez reportedly start planning their wedding

Grande and Gomez reportedly start planning their big day. Though most details are kept private, the couple is reportedly planning a small, COVID-safe wedding to be held in early summer.

May 17, 2021: We now pronounce you husband and wife!

And just like that, Grande and Gomez are married. The intimate wedding took place at their home in Montecito, California, with a guest list of less than 20 people. Since the news broke, the internet has been in a frenzy. Keeping with her ongoing pursuit of privacy, Ari has still not acknowledged the wedding on her social media, but a rep for the singer confirmed it to People, saying, “The room was so happy and full of love. The couple and both families couldn’t be happier.”

Now, we (patiently) await wedding pictures!

Naomi Campbell Announces the Arrival of Her First Child

Naomi Campbell is a mom! The 50-year-old supermodel shared the news on Instagram on May 18 with an adorable photo of tiny baby feet, writing, “A beautiful little blessing has chosen me to be her mother, So honoured to have this gentle soul in my life there are no words to describe the lifelong bond that I now share with you my angel. There is no greater love.”

The post — which shows her hand cradling her baby’s feet — was met with love and support, with friends like fashion designer Marc Jacobs commenting, “Oh my God!!!!! Today is the day?? How absolutely incredible. How lucky she is and how lucky you are! What a wonderful Mother you will be. Blessings all around.” The model’s announcement sent shockwaves through the internet, and fans have taken to Twitter to share their excitement.

The model has never been married and has been relatively private about her relationship status in the past; she is believed to have welcomed her daughter solo.

The announcement comes just days before Campbell celebrates her 51st birthday on May 22. Since her runway debut in 1986, the legendary supermodel hasn’t stopped working — her most recent runway appearance was in Michael Kors’s 40th Anniversary fashion show this past April.

Campbell has spoken about wanting to be a mother in the past. In May 2017, she told Evening Standard magazine that even though it was something she thought about, she wasn’t in a rush to become a mom. “I think about having children all the time… But now with the way science is I think I can do it when I want,” she said at the time.

In 2019, Campbell spoke with WSJ Magazine about the possibility of becoming a mom one day, saying that she often sees herself as a mother figure to young models. She’s spent years carving out space for herself in the fashion industry through her modelling and philanthropic endeavours, notably with her annual charity gala Fashion for Relief, which raises money for environmental and humanitarian causes. Having spent so much of her career as an established icon in this industry, this is an exciting life pivot for Campbell. We have just one question… can she adopt us next?
