A Product Elimination Diet Could Solve Your Dry, Irritated Skin Issues

When I recently woke up with sore, swollen, dry, red eyelids (the whole gamut of skin discomfort symptoms), I did what any millennial would do: ask for help on social media. The following is an edited list of the recommendations I received: take vitamin D, don’t drink wine, eat non-inflammatory foods, try acupuncture, get more sleep, go vegetarian, stop wearing makeup, use Aveeno, IS Clinical Sheald, Province Apothecary Balm, Cetaphil, vitamin E, La Roche Posay Lipikar line, La Roche Posay Toleriane line, etc., etc., etc. Then I did what I should have done in the first place: contacted Dr. Sandy Skotnicki. (This is not to say that any of those recos weren’t good, it was just a lot.) 

The Toronto-based dermatologist is the foremost skin allergy expert in Canada. When doctors have a patient with an allergic skin condition they can’t crack, they send them to Skotnicki. She literally wrote the book on managing sensitive and reactive skin and eczema. “So many people have these issues and they’re like, well, I didn’t do anything different. Why do I have this now? Where is it coming from?” says Skotnicki of her motivation for writing the tome on reactive skin. Read on for some of her recommendations.

Understand what you’re dealing with.

“There’s a continuum between dryness, eczema and dermatitis,” says Skotnicki. While the terms are often used interchangeably, eczema is something you’re born with or genetically predisposed to having and dermatitis is something that you can cause from external measures, like over washing or being allergic to something you come in contact with. The difference between regular ol’ dry, flaky skin and dermatitis is usually itchiness and persistence, i.e. how often you are experiencing it. If it’s itchy and persistent, “that’s when you can say there’s actually inflammation, which is the dermatitis,” says Skotnicki.

Start by protecting your skin barrier.

Let’s go back to the fundamentals: skin is a barrier. When you overdo it with washing, are in lower humidity environments and are exposed to dry air, like from indoor heating, you decrease that barrier. “Change how often you wash and what you wash with,” recommends Skotnicki. Skin is acidic, so avoid high pH products like true soaps. (Some better options are CeraVe and Cetaphil.) Don’t use excessively hot water and keep showers short – and no soaking in the bath.

Try the product elimination diet.

Skotnicki’s product elimination diet is exactly like doing Whole30, but for beauty products. “I have people round up all their products,” says Skotnicki, and she doesn’t mean just makeup and skincare. Get your face products, body products, hair products and laundry detergents together, and then stop using them. Yes, all of them. Swap them out for products Skotnicki has pre-approved and use those, and only those, for two or three weeks. After two weeks, start re-introducing products one at a time and watch for any signs of irritation. The people who don’t respond to this product overhaul are the ones who really need to see a dermatologist. (For example if you have a condition like eczema or rosacea, says Skotnicki, you often need to still treat that to decrease the inflammation.)

“The waiting list for patch testing, or to see somebody like me, is months in Canada,” she says. The product elimination diet helps weed out people without true allergies or skin conditions that are just over-using products. Even if you do have a true skin condition, try the product diet anyway. “When you get to see us and you have already done this product elimination it’s helpful to us,” she adds. “Then we know you may be allergic to something and we need to patch test.”

If your eyelids, neck and ears are affected, look at your shampoo.

“Those three areas are classic shampoo distributions,” says Skotnicki. It’s common to see irritant dermatitis from shampoo in those areas, she says, because that’s where it washes off, and because the eyelids and neck are some of the thinnest skin on the body, which means the skin barrier is lower, and thus skin is more reactive.

“A lot of recalcitrant scaly eyelids are from shampoo,” she says. “I see a lot of people from other dermatologists that say they’ve changed everything [product wise], and I ask, well, did you change your shampoo? And as soon as they do they go, oh my god, my eyelids just cleared up.”

She points to a large study published last year in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology that looked at contact dermatitis in men and women between 1996 and 2006. The study found that contact dermatitis caused by personal care products is increasing in both men and women, albeit in different spots on the body. “In women, the increase is facial and it’s often haircare driven and the increase in men is on the legs and trunk caused by over-washing.”

Reconsider your diffuser.

“We’re seeing eyelid dermatitis as a result of essential oils and diffusers,” says Skotnicki. “If you put essential oil into a diffuser and it collects in the air, especially if it’s a smaller room, it can potentially irritate your eyelids.” Another big factor is fragrance.  “There’s a lot of Instagram debate between chemists and perfumers that fragrance isn’t so bad,” says Skotnicki. “Fragrance is an irritant, which can lead to dry, flaky patches.”

As for me, I’ve swapped all of my products out for the below, which were all recommended on Skotnicki’s website. (I chose them based on what was available to overnight with Amazon Prime and things I already had in my personal beauty closet). It’s only been a week, but so far, so good.

EXCLUSIVE: Sephora Canada Launches Lunar New Year Campaign With Canadian Influencers

This year, Lunar New Year welcomes The Year of The Ox and Sephora Canada is getting the festivities started early with the release of its fifth annual Lunar New Year campaign.

Beginning today, Sephora fans can shop an assortment of limited-edition beauty goods as well as custom Lunar New Year gift cards and promo offers. What is most noteworthy, however, is the campaign’s much-welcomed push past the commercial by featuring meaningful moments of cross-cultural exchange that highlight different values and traditions behind the holiday. (Lunar New Year is an annual 15-day festival that’s celebrated by multiple East Asian cultures around the world. It officially kicks off on February 12th.)

The Lunar New Year campaign is the latest extension of Sephora Canada’s We Belong To Something Beautiful series, a platform that’s been championing diversity and inclusion since its inception in 2019. To bring the campaign to life, the beauty retailer has brought on Canadian influencers Brigitte Truong and Angel Zheng.

Through videos and images shared across Sephora Canada’s social media platforms, both women will be seen highlighting the significance that the holiday holds to them. Truong will also be featured in campaign imagery, alongside her mother, both online and in select stores.

“On the first day of Lunar New Year, which is the busiest day, my parents and I always visit the Buddhist temple around the corner from their home. This is an opportunity for us to pray to deities for good luck, blessings and prosperity in the coming year,” explains Truong who’s based in Toronto and describes herself as first-generation Chinese Canadian. “We also enjoy other festivities that are held throughout the afternoon, like a celebratory lunch, a traditional dragon dance, unique holiday treats and festive music.”

“The holiday is an important time for our immediate and extended family to come together to enjoy food, love and the exchange of red envelopes,” she adds. “More importantly, it’s a time for us to really pay homage to our loved ones who have passed on: Family gatherings allow us to honour the blessings they gave us when they were still with us.”

For Vancouver-based Zheng, celebrating family ties rings true, too. “Since my parents and I moved to Canada from China when I was four, we’ve never really been able to celebrate Lunar New Year in its entirety, however we always like to host a family dinner and celebrate with traditional Lunar New Year food, like rice cakes, noodles, glutinous rice balls and dumplings,” she says.

The world of beauty is also very closely linked. “I look forward to this time of the year because the family gets bolder with the colour red: red lipstick, eyeshadow, jewelry, and clothing. Red represents joy, happiness and good luck — three things we all strive for,” reveals Truong. “My mom still gives me lucky money in traditional gold and red envelopes and, in recent years, I’ve been gifting her red lipstick.”

It’s this very connection that makes participating in the Sephora campaign even more special for Zheng. “Ever since Sephora started to showcase Lunar New Year, another tradition that my mom added to our celebrations was shopping for Lunar New Year-inspired beauty products. Since my sister and I receive hong baos (lucky red pockets that are filled with money) from our aunties and uncles, my mom would take us to Sephora to shop for beauty and skincare products” she says. “This is not a cultural tradition at all, but it’s something unique to my family that I enjoy every year.”

Could MDMA-Assisted Therapy Help Treat Anorexia?

Can MDMA-assisted therapy help treat eating disorders, like anorexia? That’s what a new study, funded by the U.S.-based non-profit Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), is looking to find out.

While the safety and efficacy of MDMA-assisted therapy is still being investigated (and it is not approved by Health Canada for treatment of any mental health conditions), Ronan Levy, founder of Canadian mental wellness company Field Trip Health – the Toronto location of which has been selected as one of the trial sites for the study – points to previous trials that showed promise in the treatment for those diagnosed with PTSD: In a phase two trial conducted by MAPS, 54 percent of trial participants in the active treatment group no longer qualified for a diagnosis of PTSD after completing treatment.

It’s important to note that this is MDMA-assisted therapy, i.e. using the psychedelic molecule to enhance the work of traditional therapeutic techniques. Patients in the trial will work with therapists before, during and after the treatment.

“As with most psychedelic-assisted therapies, what MDMA does is enable people to look at their lives and see things from different perspectives,” explains Levy. “Very often, these mental health conditions are rooted in trauma or past experiences that people aren’t able to confront or process the emotions around. Psychedelics can enable people to more objectively revisit those moments.”

After using psychedelics, says Levy, there’s a period of neuroplasticity that allows for more cognitive flexibility to change outlooks and/or habits. He likens it to an analogy Michael Pollen makes in his book, How to Change Your Mind: “Imagine two ski tracks in snow,” says Levy. “The more you ski on those tracks, the more entrenched they become, but psychedelics come along and shake the snow globe. All of a sudden you have fresh powder on top of those ski tracks to carve new paths. In very, very simplistic terms, that’s how psychedelic therapies seem to have such profoundly positive effects on treating these mental health conditions.”

There is a particular urgency in finding treatments for Anorexia Nervosa, which has the highest mortality rate of any mental health disorder. “The trial is going to have significant impact on the quality of lives of number of people,” says Ronan. “It’s why we’re so excited to be participating.”

H&M is Teaming Up With Simone Rocha For Its Latest Designer Collab

Carrying on an impressive 17-year-long (!) tradition of designer collaborations, H&M has announced that its latest partnership is with London-based fashion designer, Simone Rocha. The collection will include womenswear, menswear and childrenswear, making it the first time the designer has delved outside the world of womenswear. Each category in the H&M x Simone Rocha collection will feature a full line-up of offerings, including special occasion pieces, tulle dresses, knits, outerwear, casual t-shirts and accessories – most notably, Rocha’s signature sparkling jewellery and pearl-embellished footwear.

The best part? You won’t have to wait long to get your hands on the collection’s pieces. The H&M x Simone Rocha collection will launch on March 11th, 2021, coinciding with the 10-year anniversary of the Simone Rocha brand. To celebrate this milestone, the designer’s H&M collaboration will feature silhouettes, fabrics and embellishments that pay homage to past collections and archival pieces, which are always a tribute to her dual-heritage, featuring nods to both Ireland and Hong Kong.

For the campaign, Rocha chose to work with a small group of friends and people who inspire her, like stylist, collaborator and close friend Robbie Spencer, model and friend Tess McMillan, Adwoa and Kesewa Aboah, and acclaimed Normal People actress Daisy Edgar-Jones.

“I am so thrilled to be working with H&M on this very special collection,” said Rocha in a statement. “It truly is a celebration of the signatures of my brand, and the influences that have shaped me. The stand-out element of Claypool’s ensemble was Sevin Kasran’s ‘Turmeric’ bomber jacket, an eye-catching piece from the Vancouver-based brand’s most recent drop.

Angel Chen Designed Canada Goose Parkas That Can Be Worn Upside Down

The latest collection from home-grown outerwear brand Canada Goose is designed by Chinese designer Angel Chen. The brand, who has become know for epic past collaborations, is joined by Chen as their first-ever guest designer.

Chen, who attended the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London and is shortlisted for the International Woolmark Prize, debuted her spring/summer 2021 runway collection this past October featuring her versions of iconic Canada Goose pieces. The Next In Fashion alum’s runway collection featured colour and volume that translates into dramatic redesigned Canada Goose pieces.

“This collection represents the transition from winter in Canada to spring in China,” says Chen, who included her version of the functional outerwear over tulle ball skirts in her finale looks on the runway.  The 13-piece collection is designed for men and women with mix-and-match layers to compliment varying weather conditions.

Styled unlike we’ve ever seen outwear before, with corset belts and fashion forward volume, Chen has reimagined the garments as sculptural and convertible pieces. The men’s and women’s Snow Mantra parkas can be worn a variety of ways including completely flipped upside down or with zip off elements removed.  Despite the high-fashion appearance, the collection doesn’t comprise on Canada Goose’s functionality.

Nonie’s Nina Kharey Has Launched a Company That Makes Eco-Conscious Scrubs

While she may be better known for creating elegant wardrobe staples worn by the likes of Meghan Markle, Canadian creative Nina Kharey is now leading the future of design in a different direction with the launch of her PPE-focused company, Folds.

With the brand’s introduction yesterday (pre-orders are currently available with an official launch scheduled for February 3rd), Kharey has pivoted part of her focus from her fashion label, Nonie, which she founded in 2008, to concentrate on providing innovative and stylish scrubs to medical professionals.

Shortly after the pandemic hit, Nonie began offering masks as part of its e-commerce offerings, with the brand’s local factory eventually making around 10,000 face coverings a week. To many, that sounds like a business doing its fair share to improve the lives of its community. Yet Kharey recalls thinking, “What more can we do?”

Understanding the wastefulness of existing PPE items, Kharey delved deeper into the idea of designing and manufacturing medical wearables. “The first thing I noticed when I got my hands on the patterns that are generally used for scrubs was how dated they were,” she says, adding that the designs also catered more to a male body’s fit. “I started talking to doctors and nurses, especially women, asking them what they wore to work and if they liked wearing [scrubs]. It was disappointing to hear their answers.”

Kharey already had an awareness of the environmental and ethical impacts of garment design–from material creation to manufacturing to the end-of-life factors of fabrics–through her fashion line; and she recognized that there was significant room for improvement when it came to the materiality, wearability and sustainability elements of scrubs.

“I genuinely felt like I could do this for them,” she says of making the decision to commit to creating a better kind of PPE. Kharey’s background is in engineering, so embarking on this challenge had context; but she notes that the process was a long one when it came to working with a European lab to develop the nanotechnology that would result in the creation of Folds’s recyclable fabric. Additionally, it’s a textile that’s made from post-consumer plastic that lasts twice as long as materials used to make traditional scrubs; it’s also odourless, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and possesses a 4-way stretch fit.

“Anyone and everyone that can contribute to help humanity can and should,” she says when asked why she wanted to put so much time and effort into making Folds a reality. And Kharey goes on to add that the project helped her explore aspects of her creativity in novel ways, at a time when optimism was likely waning for all of us.

“My inspiration has always come from books and music and movies,” she says of what she’s looked to during quarantine to keep her inspiration flowing. And while she’s spent much time ruminating on the legendary music of everyone from Rush and Led Zeppelin to Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, there was also a hyper-modern point to one of her lockdown activities which influenced her design work for Folds. “Every single day I’ve watched an episode of Star Trek,” she says. “[And] my mood board for Folds was covered in Star Fleet uniforms. I’m so fascinated by where they were as a society.”

She highlights that in the futuristic world of the Enterprise’s crew, earth had come out of a “petty and embarrassing” time (sound familiar?). And Kharey says that we’re at a point in history where we’re better informed about consumption and its consequences, and coming to an understanding of “how connected we are.” But she adds that we’ve a long way to go in terms of supporting and assisting those who have given so much in the past year.

“It’s sad to see that we expect [frontline workers] to perform such an Olympian task to protect us and help us, and fight this pandemic while putting their own lives at risk as well–and we don’t do anything to help them,” she says. “Yet we spend millions of dollars on our military to fight wars; and we spend millions of dollars on our athletes to win awards for our country. It’s shameful.”

Instead of allowing herself to be swallowed up by the shortcomings of society, however, Kharey has channelled her energy, engineering know-how and design prowess into moving us towards a better way of living–while also finding herself on a journey of self-discovery as well. “It’s a full circle moment,” she says of Folds’s founding and its ability to satisfy so many facets of her experience and background. “I feel like I know myself now.”

WATCH: To All The Boys 3 Trailer Is Here

Good news for Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo) stans: the full trailer for To All The Boys 3 has dropped. To All The Boys: Always And Forever, the third and final movie in the To All The Boys trilogy based on books written by Jenny Han, follows Lara Jean and Peter in their final year of high school.

Here’s the full synopsis, as per Netflix: “As Lara Jean Covey prepares for the end of high school and the start of adulthood, a pair of life-changing trips lead her to reimagine what life with her family, friends, and Peter will look like after graduation.”

If you haven’t seen any of the movies yet (even if you think you’re out of the target audience age group), we highly recommend them as a feel-good option. “I think people are sick and tired of being angry, and sick and tired of feeling miserable,” Condor, who is now 23 years old, told Teen Vogue in 2018 about the resurgence of rom-coms.

“Especially right now, in today’s society, there’s lots to be angry about,” she added. “There’s lots to have negative feelings about, and I think that all of a sudden people are just tired of it. And they want to feel something positive. People want to laugh, people want to feel good. And they don’t sometimes right now, because it is a weird, weird world we’re living in. That’s what movies and television are supposed to do, right? They’re supposed to take you out of your reality [and] give you some relief.”
