Bella Hadid in 3.Paradis + More Canadian Fashion Moments This Week

2020 might be winding down (*finally*) but our favourite fashionistas are still serving the style inspo we need – nay, deserve – as we head closer to 2021. If you’re in the mood for a diversion from this year’s stressors, take a pause to enjoy our favourite Canadian fashion moments this week: Three looks featuring Canadian brands sure to get your winter wardrobe juices flowing, whether it’s for a stroll outside or a WFH vibe.

Bella Hadid in 3.Paradis

The brunette beauty made a statement while taking to the streets of New York City in a decidedly classic look composed of a preppy v-neck sweater, ankle-length jeans and loafers, topping it off with a twist thanks to her artful Dollar Blazer by Montreal-founded label 3.Paradis. Bella’s clearly taking Carrie Bradshaw’s statement of, “I like my money right where I can see it – hanging in my closet” to a whole new level.

Olivia Palermo in Smythe

In more New York minutes, Olivia Palermo snapped a sweet pic of her and her husband, Johannes Huebl, while taking in the pre-snowstorm weather earlier this week. Palermo looked every bit the uptown girl in a roll-neck sweater and classic hair bun, and pulled everything together with Toronto-based brand Smythe‘s elegant – and sadly, sold out – Birkin coat.

Sasha Exeter in Tkees & Roots

More casual outfit inspo came our way courtesy of influencer Sasha Exeter, who paired a classic grey sweatsuit by Tkees with Roots‘s iconic cabin socks; she added a bit of oomph to the outfit via a tried-and-true styling trick, the half-tucked top. The monochromatic, laidback look mirrored Sasha’s statement about self-care and what she wishes her younger self knew about boundary setting, the importance of rest, and saying “no”.

16 Simple But Cute Christmas and Holiday Nail Art Designs

In a regular year, wearing amazingly detailed holiday nail designs would be as simple as booking an appointment at your local nail salon. Alas, it is 2020. Not being able to see nail artists in person complicates things, but we have solutions.

First, simplify! You don’t need a Meredith Grey-level steady hand to DIY some festival nail art. Think solid colours: a wash of red, silver, gold or any sort of glitter-y polish. (Or perhaps a solid colour topped with some glitter? Layer away!)

Second, press-on nails. The old-school technique is having a major renaissance right now and there are more size, shape and colour options than ever. Check out designs from Canadian nail experts at TIPS Nail Bar, Naked Beauty Bar and Rebecca Ramsdale. If you don’t think you’re a press-on person, think again.

See below for 16 holiday nail design ideas to try now.

Red

It doesn’t get more classic than a red manicure – and the design options are endless.

Skittles Nails

“Skittle” nail art is, simply put, the trendy name for wearing a different colour on each nail. Get extra fancy and do a gradient ombre with a single colour, going from dark reds to light reds, for example.

Sephora

From December  20 to January 1, Sephora Rouge, VIB and Insiders will receive an extra 20 percent off on sale items with code MAJORSALE.

Fitness Trainer Emma Lovewell Gives the Lowdown on Peloton’s New Pilates Classes

After launching Barre on its platform earlier this year, Peloton is now offering yet another oft-demanded fitness discipline on its platform: Pilates. Contrary to popular belief that Pilates requires a reformer or other complicated equipment, Peloton is offering a prop-free take on the low-impact workout known for strengthening and toning the body.

“We use our own bodyweight, we focus on incorporating our breath into our movements, holding positions, as well as coordination to make things challenging,” Peloton instructor Emma Lovewell tells FASHION. In addition to Lovewell, the 20-class collection will be taught by instructors Kristin McGee, Aditi Shah, Hannah Corbin and Sam Yo, and features intro, unlevelled, beginner, intermediate and advanced classes ranging from 10 to 45 minutes.

“When I was a professional dancer I would take Pilates classes every week and I loved it,” says Lovewell. “It made me feel longer, and stronger, and even more flexible. I saw a difference when I was in dance class or auditions; it gave me a sense of confidence and body awareness that has helped me in every career since then.”

Read on for our chat with the Peloton trainer about what makes Pilates a great workout, tips for beginners, and how to motivate oneself to work out at home during lockdown.

Pilates is known to be an incredible strength workout, great for toning the body and strengthening the core. What makes it such an effective workout?

Pilates really encourages body awareness. When you are more aware of what muscles and joints you are using, the more effective your movements and workouts can be. The fact that there is such an emphasis on strengthening the core makes it such a great workout alone and also as a supplemental workout. Having a strong core will help alleviate back pain, it will make you a better athlete: cyclist, yogi, golfer, dancer, you name it. Many of our movements are initiated at the core, or largely involve the core, so having strength there is crucial. Also think about your core as a protector of your spine, and we always want to prioritize good spine health.

What are a few things people must keep in mind when doing Pilates, whether at home or in a studio?

We spend a lot of time on the mat, so for comfort, some people like to layer two mats on top of each other. Take your time, especially if you’re new to Pilates. It might take a few times to catch on to the lingo, but remember not to take yourself too seriously. The emphasis is body-mind connection and body awareness, so pay attention to what you feel and where you feel it. And remember: progress, not perfection!

One of your favourite sayings is “Work out because you love your body, not because you hate it.” Any tips to help people working out at home find motivation and love their bodies during this challenging time?

What you focus on is what you get. So similar to dieting, when someone says “I can’t eat pizza anymore,” then all they think about is pizza. What if you talked more about what you DO want? Want to focus on eating more vegetables and greens? You’ll have an easier time eliminating what you don’t want, once you figure out what you do want. If you focus on how much you hate your body, or some part of your body, it will consume you. Change your way of thinking to highlight what you do like and what you’re grateful for. Your body allows you to walk, run, pick up your children, dance to your favourite song, etc. Especially now, in a world that seems very difficult for so many people we have to find the silver lining, and we have to find gratitude in our every day to make it through.

What’s motivated you to stay active and healthy during the pandemic?

I remember how good I feel after I have moved my body or sweat a little bit. I never regret moving my body — a walk, a stretch, a cycling class, yoga class, anything. Movement is medicine and it is such a mood booster. I also love to remind people that commitment shows up when motivation is lacking. Can you commit to something because you know it’s good for you? Can you show up because you said you would? The hardest part is sometimes just starting, a few minutes in and you’re feeling good!

Get to Know Viral Canadian Fashion Sensation Tika The Iggy

Last week, a TikTok of an incredibly fashionable Italian greyhound lamenting the lack of occasions to wear any of her good outfits this year went viral. (Haven’t watched it yet? Please stop reading this article and do so immediately.) The dog behind the video was Montreal-based Tika the Iggy. “She is very much a diva in real life and I try to convey that online with her online persona,” says Thomas, one of Tika’s two dads. “I’m not really making much up.” We spoke to Thomas to get the story behind Tika the Iggy’s incredibly chic outfits, her rise to social media fame and how she’s using her status as a self-proclaimed gay icon to give back to the LGBTQ+ community.

Okay, so tell me about Tika.

She’s going to be ten years old in July, so she’s my nine and a half at this point. Her [social media] accounts have pretty much become fashion accounts [Laughs]. We live in Montreal and Italian greyhounds are desert dogs. So obviously, this is not the appropriate climate for them. Living in a country like Canada, they need to have a lot of clothes for practical reasons, because pretty much from October until the beginning of May, it’s too cold for them to be outside naked. She needs the clothes to stay warm, but like human fashion, we can have fun with it. We’ve incorporated anything from faux fur to sequins – anything that’s colourful and bright and will pop in a photo – but we also make sure that it’s functional, that she can actually walk around in it and be comfortable and, most importantly, warm.

Where do you get her outfits from?

We work with a lot of small vendors, like Dogs Wardrobe, Hound Around and Loko Pet Apparel. Italian greyhounds have an oddly shaped body – they have really long backs, big rib cages and tiny waists – so it’s hard to get something for them at a generic pet store because it will be too short or too baggy.

Does Tika have a favourite outfit?

Hmm, I think the most recent outfit we got, she was wearing it in the video. It’s very colourful. It’s very on brand with her personality.

What’s her personality like?

It’s very much her way or the highway. She’s a really sweet dog. She loves to be around people, but also, she won’t do it if there’s nothing in it for her. So, you know, she’s a bit of a diva. She’s sleeps anywhere from 22 to 23 hours a day and when she’s awake she’s pretty much just looking for food.

Sorry, she sleeps 22 hours a day?

Italian greyhounds sleep a lot in general, but as they get older, like most senior dogs, they just sleep more and more and more.

How long has Tika been on social media?

It’ll be five years in February. We started her account in 2016. The intention wasn’t to become this [big]. I started it because I thought I had a very cute dog and I wanted to share her outfits online. And my friends were saying I was posting too much of her on my personal account.

Was this her first viral video?

She’s had other moments, but this is by far the biggest.

Does Tika know she’s famous?

Absolutely not. My partner and I joke about it because right now she’s going quite viral – she’s gained over 70,000 followers this week on Instagram and about 350,000 on TikTok. [Her followers] are skyrocketing right now and we keep looking over at her and she’s passed out on her bed with her tongue out.

A post shared by tika the iggy (@tikatheiggy)

Did she get an extra treat or something for her recent success?

She does get well-paid during her photo shoots and video shoots.

Who are her style icons?

Judy Garland, Lady Gaga. Celine Dion, of course. Tika’s a self-proclaimed gay icon because she has two dads – me and my partner – and because she’s always dressed fabulously like other gay icons. The bigger Tika’s become [on social], the more we tried to work with charities. One charity we work with is Rainbow Railroad. They’re based in Toronto. They help people seeking asylum from countries where they can be prosecuted for being gay to come to Canada and start a better, safer life. We try to promote visibility of LGBTQ+ people online. I’ve had people reach out to me saying my son came out to me because he saw how comfortable I was watching this dog with two dads. It’s been really cool to see [the response].

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Get Into the Podcast Game with Archewell Audio

Following in the footsteps of Barack and Michelle Obama, whose production company Higher Ground announced a partnership with Spotify last year, the Sussexes have announced the launch of their own media empire. Archewell Audio, an audio-first production company founded by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, aims to bring “different voices and perspectives” to listeners in an exclusive multi-year podcast partnership with Spotify.

“One of the things my husband and I have always talked about is our passion for meeting people and hearing their stories,” says Meghan in a teaser clip announcing the partnership. “And no matter what their story, they offer you an understanding of where someone else is coming from, and at the same time remind you in some way about a story about yourself.”

“And that’s what this project is all about,” adds Harry.

“What we love about podcasting is that it reminds all of us to take a moment and to really listen, to connect to one another without distraction,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a joint statement. “With the challenges of 2020, there has never been a more important time to do so, because when we hear each other, and hear each other’s stories, we are reminded of how interconnected we all are.”

The first complete series from Archewell Audio and Spotify is expected next year and will be available to stream for free on Spotify. But in the meantime, the Sussexes plan to release a holiday special featuring inspirational guests reflecting on the events of 2020. “We’re talking to some amazing people,” Meghan said in the teaser clip released today. “They’re going to share their memories that really shape this past year, which has been, as we know, a difficult one for everyone.” The special is slated to drop later this month, so watch this space for details.
