All the Top Trending Searches on Google Canada in 2020

SO MUCH happened in 2020 that the Oxford English Dictionary couldn’t even pick a single Word of the Year this year. Instead, they picked a whole list to best represent a year that “left [them] speechless.” Which means 2020 was also a very busy year over at Google Canada, with top trending searches that spanned everything from the US election to COVID-19 to Tiger King to Black Lives Matter to bread recipes.

Prince William, Kate Middleton and Their Kids Make A Rare Family Appearance

Compared to previous years, we didn’t see much of the royal family in 2020 due to the cancellation of public events necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic. So it was a rare occasion to see the entire Cambridge fam – the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge alongside their three children – photographed together at an event today.

Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2, attended a special performance of The National Lottery’s Pantoland at The Palladium in honour of frontline workers and their families. The event, which had socially distant seating, marked their first official royal engagement together as a family of five.

According to the Kensington Royal Instagram account: “Before the performance, The Duke delivered a short speech to thank those across the country for the sacrifices they have made to keep the country operating and to support their communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. During the interval, The Duke and Duchess also met a small number of key worker families to hear more about their experiences over the past year, before popping backstage to thank the cast and crew.”

It’s been a busy week for Kate and William, who just returned from a cross-country train tour of the U.K., where they met with frontline workers and their families. (Check out Kate Middleton’s excellent choice of outwear for the occasion.)

This is likely to be one of the last times we see the Cambridges in 2020. The royal family won’t be spending Christmas at Sandringham House as they have done in past years, so there won’t be the annual (and much photographed) family walk to church.

Nominations Are Now Open for the 2021 L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Awards

The nomination period for the fifth annual L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Awards is now open. The awards honour the extraordinary efforts of Canadian women making a difference in the lives of others. Do you know a Canadian woman who fits the bill? Nominate her now.

“Each and every year, we are inspired, humbled and enlightened by the stories of women who devote their lives to making impactful changes for others,” said Ali Fakih, general manager for L’Oréal Paris Canada in a press release. “Our mandate is to provide these women with another platform in which they can raise awareness for their causes and continue the important work they are doing to bring even more positive change to this world. While this year has not been without its challenges, we’ve seen exceptional women stand up and continue to pioneer change.”

This year, honourees for the L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Awards will be selected based on the following criteria: addressing a crucial need in the community, the impact their inspiring contributions have made, their innovation on developing solutions and their passion to evoke change and inspire future generations.

Each honouree will receive a $10,000 donation to their non-profit cause. Traditionally, honourees are flown to Toronto on International Women’s Day (March 8) for a gala event with an A-list host (Aja Naomi King, Blake Lively and Helen Mirren have previously hosted the event). However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event will be reimagined this year.

The Ultimate Winter Skincare Routine For A Glass Skin Glow

Cold winter months call for extra skincare precautions—even for those of us blessed with magically low-maintenance skin throughout the year! Dry outdoor air, harsh windburn and blasting furnaces all conspire to leave our faces feeling dull, flaky and generally cranky.

Fortunately, a good skincare routine can combat that: “Achieving a hydrated, glass-skin glow isn’t the easiest in winter, but it is 100 percent possible,” says Samantha Mae Henderson, National District Trainer for belif, a skincare brand inspired by both apothecary herbal traditions and K-beauty innovation. The basic rules: You want to retain as much moisture as possible, replenish what’s been lost, and then seal it all in. These simple at-home steps will help keep your skin happy, healthy—and dare we say dewy—all season long.

Cleanse super gently. For starters, swap your usual foamy face wash for a more nourishing cleansing balm. The belif Aqua Bomb Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm, for example, melts from a sherbet-like texture to a cream to an oil, erasing makeup and impurities without leaving your face tight and parched. To protect your skin’s moisture barrier, rinse off with lukewarm (not hot) water, and avoid any friction. That means instead of rubbing with a washcloth, “opt for gently massaging your makeup-removing balm using your hands,” Henderson advises.

Add hydration before your moisturizer. Applying lotion or cream right onto a bare, totally dry face may be common practice, but it’s not the most effective. “In winter, it’s all about layering—not just your clothes, but also your skincare,” says Henderson, who suggests using a toner designed to add moisture, like the belif Aqua Bomb Hydrating Toner, followed by a replenishing serum. Then, lock in both with your favourite moisturizer. “In North America, toners are often misconstrued as part of cleansing, but in K-beauty they’re used as an additional layer of hydration.” To apply the hydrating toner, skip cotton pads, Henderson says. Instead, pour the liquid into your hands and softly press into skin.

Make sure you get these ingredients. “When shopping for winter skincare, some ingredients to look out for are hyaluronic acid, ceramides and squalane,” explains Henderson. “These ingredients, or forms of them, naturally occur in our skin and are responsible for plumping up our skin with water and locking it in.” Hyaluronic acid is especially skilled at holding onto water, while ceramides can create a barrier so moisture won’t evaporate. Similarly, skin-soothing squalane can hang onto moisture, without feeling greasy, she adds. You can find both ceramides and squalane in the belif True Cream Aqua Bomb, a lightweight gel-cream that feels like giving your skin a tall glass of water.

Try a daily facial massage. Not only does this feel relaxing, but it can also help increase the absorption of your skincare, says Henderson. Pay particular attention to the delicate zone around your eyes, which is among the first places to show telltale signs of dryness. Her how-to: Apply a nourishing eye cream on your ring finger or use a massage tool, and very gently massage it around your eye area in a circular motion, following your orbital and brow bone. Lightly press on the six pressure points around the eye socket to help revitalize the area.

Help your skin recover if you’ve been outside a lot. If you’ve been facing the frosty elements for hours, make sure you devote a little time to helping your skin bounce back. “It could be as simple as applying the belif Aqua Bomb Sleeping Mask before your outing as an extra protection layer on top of your cream, or afterwards while you sip your cocoa by the fire.” Unlike traditionally goopy masks, this one has a unique jelly-pudding texture that doesn’t feel sticky. Of course, you can also use it as an overnight treatment, which is ideal anytime you want to wake up extra refreshed and radiant.

Canadian Outerwear Designer Natasha Patten on the Importance of Shopping Local

Natasha Patten, founder and creative director of Toronto-based outerwear label mycoatisblue, has adopted many modern ideas into her business since launching it in 2016, like direct-to-consumer sales and virtual appointments for her out-of-town customers. But Patten’s interest in crafting clothing goes back – way back – to her elementary school days.

“In grade seven Home Ec class, I made a pair of shorts and I got an A+,” Patten recalls. “I thought, I’m good at this. I started sewing from there, using store-bought patterns.” She also had a home advantage, literally, when it came to the skill, thanks to a seamstress aunt and a New York-based uncle who worked as a tailor at the department store Lord & Taylor.

“He was the epitome of excellence in fashion,” Patten says, adding that he taught her a valuable lesson when it came to friends and family asking her for discounted prices on her creations. “He told me never to cheapen my work for anyone, because somebody will love what you do and pay the full price. I learned a lot about sewing from him, but also about business.”

Patten says she never strayed from her dream of being a fashion designer, taking a placement in the studio of local forward-thinking designer Izzy Camilleri while in high school. “She’s amazing,” Patten says of her time working with Camilleri, whose label Iz Adaptive was at the forefront of accessible design when it launched over a decade ago. “She really taught me the fundamentals and the importance of making things of quality and not cutting corners.”

Going on to train in the fashion program at Ryerson University, Patten eventually decided to take the leap and launch mycoatisblue four years ago. Her latest collection includes trim, elongated silhouettes and contrast collar details for men’s pieces, and a knit scarf-neckline style on the women’s side. Patton says anyone could wear any of her styles: “I don’t judge.”

At first glance of mycoatisblue’s array of pieces, a striking sculptural quality is noticeable in how hemlines are seductively curved, and sleeves descend into graceful bell-shapes. “I get my inspiration from architecture,” Patten divulges. “For a brief time when I was younger, I wanted to be an architect.” Now, she studies buildings wherever she is, and also looks to books about modern architecture for new aspects of influence.

“Architecture and fashion are really closely related,” she notes. “A pattern is just a blue print that you see in 3D when it’s finished. I love the way angles and shapes and lines coexist. Every piece I [design] is the combination of those things, to make a person feel something when they put it on…. They feel more confident, more powerful–whatever that feeling is, it’s like how you feel when you walk into a large space that’s sparse. You might feel small and insignificant, or you might also feel like you can breathe. And when you walk into a space that’s small and crowded, some people might feel claustrophobic while others feel safe and comfortable. It’s a feeling you get in a space that I try to create in my garments.”

Patten strives to add even more power to how her customers feel in her coats by offering customization options on her pieces, like hem lengthening or shortening; and she will interact with clients about sizing to ensure a perfect fit. She says that operating as an online business has been beneficial during the COVID crisis, adding that a recent virtual presentation of her new pieces was a great chance for clients across the country to learn more about her brand. “When you’re small, you can do these kinds of things,” she says, going on to highlight the importance of supporting local labels whenever possible.

“I pay my taxes, and that helps everyone,” she notes. “When we shop local, it helps us all.” Patten adds that she was inspired to make masks earlier in the pandemic as she had a roll of breathable Italian scuba fabric at her studio. “I gave some to my family and to front-line workers that I know. A lot of people have asked me if they’ll go online, so I might do that soon.” Mycoatisblue also offers a selection of bold graphic shirts, hinting that there’s always room for the brand to expand as time goes on.

In addition to Canadians sporting her creations, Patten says there are a few fashionable State-side celebs she’d love to dress if ever the opportunity arose. “Tracee Ellis Ross – she’s my style icon. I’m not very quirky as a person or designer [but] she does classic tailoring and she can mix it with quirky. And honestly, Barack Obama. He’s the quintessential cool guy now. I even know which one I’d give him – the Justi style, with the two-tone colourway. He’s conservative but he’s cool, and it’s a blend of the two.”

When the idea is floated that Obama will need something to wear to the upcoming inauguration, Patten doesn’t miss a beat. “If COVID wasn’t happening, I would fly to Washington to try and make this happen. I’m not even joking.” Luckily, you don’t have to travel to get a piece of that quintessential cool for yourself.

You Can Now Shop Canadian Brands Via Livestream

The Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) has announced a new way to shop Canadian brands this holiday season: livestream shopping.

The organization partnered with Montreal-based live shopping service Livescale to offer the service, which will live on its recently launched Shop Local Labels platform. Consider it a marriage between old school TV shopping channels and IG livestreams – you get the best of both worlds: direct shopping and the ability to interact with your hosts.

“Now more than ever we need to support all of our local brands and businesses or they will disappear,” says Vicky Milner, president of CAFA, in a statement. “Shop Local Labels, gives Canadians a single and convenient platform to discover a multitude of incredible businesses, brands and talented designers. Partnering with Livescale to add live shopping events to the experience is another timely and effective way to help ensure these brands are recognized and celebrated. It’s important for us to not only be able to showcase who we have in this country but to also highlight who is behind the brands and tell their stories.”

Shop Local Labels currently houses a selection of 360+ fashion, beauty, home and kids products from over 90 local Canadian brands curated by CAFA. Allbirds and Jeff Staple Partner on an Inside-Out Sneaker

Very sustainable and very, very comfortable shoe/apparel brand Allbirds has partnered with creative sneaker legend Jeff Staple to design an “inside-out version” of the Tree Dasher. The carbon footprint number, normally found on the bottom of all Allbirds shoes, is featured prominently on the side of the Staple sneaker.

“In this urgent climate crisis, the need to make environmentally sound choices is more important than ever,” said Staple in a statement. “This design decision was made to not only educate the consumers on sustainable practices, but also encourage them to seek out this information in every aspect of their lives and make more responsible decisions that will inevitably affect our planet. And PS: It looks dope!”

In case you need a refresher: a carbon footprint is the measurement of all the greenhouse gases, like methane and carbon dioxide, emitted to create a product, converting into CO2. 

The average carbon footprint for an Allbirds shoe is 7.6 carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, which is equivalent to the emissions emitted by charing 967 smartphones, drying five loads of laundry or driving 30 kilometres. The footprint for this shoe is 9.2 kg CO2e.

The Allbirds x Jeff Staple collection will also include his take on the Trino tube socks. Both the socks and the Tree Dashers will feature Staple’s trademark Pigeon design. See the collection below.

The 2021 Pantone Colours of the Year Are Here – And They’re Very Wearable

The 2021 Pantone Colours of the Year are here. Two colours, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, were selected for their “enduring and uplifting” vibe. It’s not the first time Pantone has selected two shades as colour of the year: in 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity shared the title. In 2020, the colour of the year was Classic Blue.

Ultimate Gray is described as a colour “emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation,” while Illuminating is a “bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power.” It’s a colour story that Pantone says encapsulated “thoughtfulness” and “the promise of something sunny and friendly.”

“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of The Pantone Color Institute in a statement. “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

A message we could all use at the end of 2020, non?

Both Pantone colours are super wearable. Watch Keke Palmer’s “Extreme Acne” Makeup Coverage Tutorial

In a refreshingly honest series of social media posts from a celebrity, Hustlers actress Keke Palmer opened up about her struggle with acne and Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Last week, Palmer shared detailed information about her acne journey, which included two rounds of Accutane and various changes to her diet. (Palmer has recently started on the Alkaline Diet, which focuses on eating vegetables and fruits, while cutting back on sugar, alcohol, meat and processed foods.)

Now, Palmer has posted what she calls an “extreme acne coverage” makeup tutorial on IGTV. “To all my people suffering with conditions and acne, ignore the misguided comments suggesting things for you,” wrote Palmer. “There are a lot of people trying to sell products, I tried to delete them all! If you want help seek it out through extensive research, don’t let people take advantage of your condition on Instagram. — y’all should be ashamed.”

Keke Palmer’s Acne Coverage Makeup Routine:

Palmer’s acne coverage routine starts with a layer of Aquaphor on her eyelids and face (to counteract dryness, she says) and a spritz of Caudalie Beauty Elixir. Next up, colour correcting: Palmer applies an orange colour corrector from the M.A.C Studio Fix Correction Palette in medium dark walnut to cancel out her acne scars. She then applies NARS Concealer in Medium 2 Ginger and M.A.C Pro Long Wear Foundation in NC 50. After that, she applies a lighter NARS concealer in the centre of her face (almost where you would place highlighter). She blends each step out with a beauty sponge.

Palmer finishes with powder formulas. “If you’re having texture problems like I do, you want to keep your skin matte,” she says. She uses M.A.C Dark Mineralizing Skin Finish Studio Fix Foundation in NW 58, Lancôme Absolute Powder in Absolute Almonds and Ben Nye Powder in 6B01.

“People have to really stop blaming acne on makeup,” she tweeted. “People actually have conditions! Lol. It’s so trivial how anyone could assume bad skin is a product of one not taking care of themselves. Esp when I’ve seen people treat their skin horribly and yet it’s completely clear lol.”

“Hey you guys, for some of you this may be TMI, but for me my platform has always been used for things much greater than me. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome has been attacking me from the inside out my entire life and I had no idea. My acne has been so bad that people in my field offered to pay for me to get it fixed. I tried EVERYTHING. I did Accutane TWICE. People say drink water, have a better diet, but I did all that, I ate all the “right” things, my blood tests were fine. But it took ME taking a personal look into my family that has a history of diabetes and obesity, to understand what was ACTUALLY happening with me. And unfortunately doctors are people and if you don’t “look the part” they may not think that’s your problem. They may not even suggest it if you “look healthy” whatever that means! I came to a doctor in tears once and all they offered was a measles vaccine… Exactly.”

“I’m posting this to say that it’s okay and we can help ourselves. My skin has made me sad many nights but I do not give up on myself. I know this is not me and my body has been looking for help. I do not have a medical degree but I did the research and took what I learned to a doctor and that led them to a proper diagnosis. I’m not saying trust web md for everything haha but what I am saying is no one can help us like we can help ourselves.”

Taylor Swift’s 2020 Christmas Card Is Very Taylor Swift

A Louisville radio host has shared a photo of the Christmas card they received from Taylor Swift and it couldn’t possibly be more on brand for the artist. “Getting a holiday card from @taylorswift13 is a great way to start the season,” tweeted Kyle Meredith. “And cats in Santa hats make it even better.”

The card features a collage of Swift’s three cats – Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button – dressed in Santa hat, a party hat and a winter-y scarf. One of the images appear to be from an Instagram post Swift shared back in April of this year.

“Wishing you a season of moments so wonderful, they become folklore,” it reads, referencing the album she made remotely during quarantine with Jack Antonoff and The National’s Aaron Dessner. “Love, Taylor Swift and everyone at 13 Management.”

Swift recently opened up about the process of creating the album in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It was a very do-it-yourself experience,” said Swift. “My management team, we created absolutely everything in advance — every lyric video, every individual album package. And then we called our label a week in advance and said, “Here’s what we have.”

“The photo shoot was me and the photographer walking out into a field. I’d done my hair and makeup and brought some nightgowns,” she added. “These experiences I was used to having with 100 people on set, commanding alongside other people in a very committee fashion — all of a sudden it was me and a photographer, or me and my DP. It was a new challenge, because I love collaboration. But there’s something really fun about knowing what you can do if it’s just you doing it.”

Toronto-based Brand MDG Jewellery Has Dropped a New Collection & Décor Pieces

“I’m always thinking about what’s next; that’s just how I am,” Canadian entrepreneur and designer Meg deGraaf says when speaking about her latest pieces, both wearable and décor-centric. DeGraff founded her jewellery line, MDG – which takes its inspiration from different aspects of architecture and furniture design – while living in London, U.K.; she now works out of a Toronto studio crafting each piece to order by hand, taking a minimalistic approach to creating each collection.

“I really like to have tight collections,” she notes. “I need to love every single piece and feel really good about releasing [them] because it’s such a personal thing for me. That’s what I’ve learned over the years – what my style is, what makes me feel good and what I feel proud to put out.”

MDG’s most recent jewellery pieces, comprising a collection called ‘Volute’, take their influence from “the scrolls that are found on the top of pillars in Renaissance architecture,” deGraaf says. “These scrolls were used a lot in silverware and ceramics. I started with that design idea in mind and added my take on it.” Modernistic coils and chain link motifs anchor the offering, with several pieces including the Mirror Coin Ring and Uneven Scroll Stone Earrings affording customers the opportunity to customize with birthstones and other gems.

DeGraff, who is a self-taught maker, has channeled her interest in making unique goods into the line of ceramic interior objects she just released; they join other homey elements like pillows and glassware in the MDG décor line deGraff introduced earlier this year.

“I love interior design, and I always wanted to do a home collection,” she says. “At the start of COVID when everything shut down, I was forced to slow down and take a step back.” DeGraff says that the fact that her suppliers weren’t operating gave the chance to start working on her home décor pieces in a considered way.

‘Slow and steady’ as a design ethos suits deGraff, allowing her to follow her own research and personal inclinations rather than what’s making a splash at a given moment. “I don’t put out pieces that are super trendy or just to make sales,” she says, noting that she spends much time tweaking and editing her pieces before dropping a new collection.

This measured approach is one she’s noticing from customers as well, adding that she’s pleased that this year has motivated consumers to become more conscientious about their purchases as well. DeGraff has implemented one easy way for MDG fans to be thoughtful in spending their dollars by donating 15 per cent of sales from specific products to different charities and organizations every few months.

Right now, Water First, “an amazing organization fighting the water crisis in Indigenous communities across Canada” is feeling the benefits of deGraff’s philanthropy. “I can just see how privilege and lucky I am,” deGraff says when asked why she’s incorporated a give-back component into her usual business operations. “I’ve always donated to charities and organizations that I believe in, and felt that I needed to be doing something more. I’ve seen so much hardship in my own city and during my travels, but there are so many people doing amazing things who need all the support they can get.”

DeGraaf also has a message of support for fellow makers – and the world at large – as we exit such a tumultuous and fraught year. “You can’t be overcome by the negatives or stress or struggle,” she says, noting that she’s speaking from experience. “You just have to keep going…. Everyone has had a pretty trying time this year, but you just have to keep pushing through and know nothing will ever go as planned, and that’s ok.”

For their final stop on the royal train tour, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met up with other members of the royal family – Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Anne and Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex  at Windsor Castle for an outdoor event in honour of essential workers. Middleton wasn’t the only one to don a jewel-toned coat for the occasion: the queen wore a crimson jacket and matching hat, while Camilla wore a rich purple.

Etsy is Now Carrying a Selection of Gifts Handpicked by Dan Levy

Last year, Dan Levy served as one of the judges for Etsy’s first-ever Design Awards and when we spoke to him on the phone about it, the multi-hyphenate revealed that many of the costume and set pieces we’ve seen on his Emmy-winning show Schitt’s Creek were in fact sourced from Etsy.

“For a very long time I didn’t have the financial means to just go into a store and buy stuff.
